Comedian Jerrod Carmichael got very personal in his latest HBO special on Sunday, candidly revealing during a discussion on sexuality that he has had relationships with men.

During Home Videos — the first of two specials in which Carmichael will have informal, intimate conversations with his family — Carmichael returned home to North Carolina, where he sat down for a Q&A with his mother, Cynthia. After asking his mom to reflect on the affair that Cynthia’s husband once had on her, Carmichael asked if she’s ever been attracted to women.

“I’ve hooked up with dudes before,” Carmichael revealed, after Cynthia said she’d never had those feelings for a woman. Her response? “Well, OK. That’s your option. I like men.” The conversation ended shortly after that exchange, and there was no further discussion of how Carmichael labels his sexuality. (For those keeping score at home, Carmichael is indeed the answer to our recent Blind Item about a buzzy entertainer who would potentially make a big announcement during a TV special.)

Elsewhere in the first Home Videos, Carmichael spoke candidly with family and friends about other aspects of the black experience, including politics, representation in pop culture and their individual feelings about embattled singer R. Kelly.

In a separate conversation — prior to the chat with his mother — Carmichael spoke about love and relationships with a group of female relatives, asking them how they would react if he got involved with a white woman and brought her home to meet them.

Carmichael also directed the special and served as an executive producer. An airdate for the second Home Videos has not yet been announced.

In addition to his various stand-up performances, Carmichael is best known for the NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show, which starred the comedian as a fictional version of himself. (The character dated, and later married, girlfriend Maxine for the duration of the show.) It was cancelled in June 2017 after three seasons, despite critical acclaim.

Leading out of an America’s Got Talent clip show, The Carmichael Show‘s double-episode series finale on Wednesday night started off with 3.1 million total viewers and a 0.8 rating, up a tenth in the demo week-to-week.

The second half-hour, however, slipped to 2.5 mil (its second-smallest audience ever) and a 0.7 rating. TVLine readers gave the series finale an average grade of “B.”

NBC’s numbers, as well as those for ABC and CBS, are all subject to change due to preseason NFL preemptions.

Over on CBS, Big Brother (6.6 mil/2.0) is currently up a tenth week-to-week, and tying season highs. Salvation (3.4 mil/0.6) is also currently up a tenth.

Fox’s MasterChef (3.4 mil/0.9) and The F Word (1/7 mil/0.5) slipped two and one tenth, respectively.

ABC’s Princess Diana special did 6.1 mil and a 1.0, placing second for the night in both measures.

Carmichael Show Series Finale Recap: Did the NBC Comedy Go Out on Top? https://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-series-finale-recap-did-the-nbc-comedy-go-out-on-top/ https://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-series-finale-recap-did-the-nbc-comedy-go-out-on-top/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 03:00:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-series-finale-recap-did-the-nbc-comedy-go-out-on-top/

The Carmichael Show was cancelled back in June, forcing Wednesday’s double-header to serve as a makeshift series finale for the critically acclaimed comedy.

THE BIG THREE | The hour kicks off with Jerrod and Maxine at a restaurant, celebrating their three-year anniversary. The topic of marriage comes up, and Maxine says that she doesn’t want a big wedding; she’d prefer to take a trip down to the courthouse to make things official. This, of course, becomes a reality later in the episode.

Out for drinks, Jerrod and Maxine are chatting up a woman named Jessica, who Jerrod is convinced wants the evening to culminate in a threesome. He’s right. Maxine, who’s very into the idea, compliments Jessica on her eyes, prompting their flirty new acquaintance to go in for a kiss. She then turns to Jerrod and kisses him, too. Yeah, it’s on.

Jessica goes home with Maxine and Jerrod for a little “Westworld and chill,” but fails to take the hint when Maxine wants her to leave the following morning. Jerrod then tells her to hit the bricks, and not a moment too soon. Joe, Cynthia and Bobby show up uninvited mere seconds after Jessica leaves. Unfortunately, she returns just a few minutes later, having forgotten to take her bra when she left.  The ‘rents react as you’d expect they would: Joe is chauvinistically proud of his son, while he and Cynthia both put down Maxine for engaging in group sex. (Double standard, much?) And after three years of pretending their insults don’t bother her, Maxine finally stands up for herself and tells Jerrod’s folks to leave.

Later, Maxine and Jerrod have a much-needed talk, where Jerrod says that he knows he’s a bad boyfriend for never standing up for her. In turn, Maxine tells Jerrod that all she wants is for him to put as much effort into caring about her feelings as he did about their threesome. The conversation proves to be an eyeopener for Jerrod, who then tells Maxine to get dressed and wear something nice. Cut to Joe and Cynthia’s house, where Jerrod and Maxine enter to share that they’ve just gotten married!

MO’ MONEY, MO’ PROBLEMS | The second half-hour plays less like a series finale. It’s been a few weeks since Jerrod and Maxine got married, and arrive at Joe and Cynthia’s place to show off her belatedly purchased wedding ring. It’s a ridiculously expensive ruby, but Joe and Cynthia can’t help but make fun of the fact that it’s not a diamond. Bobby then enters to introduce the family to his new girlfriend: a sixty-something year-old hedge fund manager named Janet. After she leaves, Bobby tells the family that he’s in love, but Jerrod isn’t buying it. Bobby’s with Janet for her money, as proven by his brand new Rolex watch. Janet’s also buying things that Nekeisha can make use of, who rolls on in with leftover brisket she made in Bobby’s brand new slow cooker.

Because of the money, Jerrod says Janet will always have control over Bobby in their relationship. This provokes Maxine to ask Jerrod if he thinks he has control over her, since he apparently makes more money than she does. (Was anyone even aware that Jerrod works?) Jerrod, never knowing when to shut up, says that’s exactly the case. In turn, Maxine informs her husband that she has a trust fund worth $ 1.5 million, which she will receive once her 93-year-old grandmother dies. Jerrod, who now believes Maxine’s grandmother is one sneeze away from making his wife a millionaire, goes out and spends tens— yes, tens of thousands of dollars on extravagant purchases, including a $ 32,000 Rolex, a box of Cuban cigars and a life-size statue of Prince. (Seriously, how much money could Jerrod possibly have in savings?)

Later, Jerrod finds out that Bobby broke up with Janet, who wanted him to stop being friends with Nekeisha. Everyone’s reaction to the breakup makes him realize what having money does not only to him, but to his family, all of whom are ticked off at Bobby for doing away with his meal ticket. Jerrod then returns home, apologizes to Maxine for his imbecilic behavior and asks that she draw up a post-nuptial agreement so he can never get his hands on her fortune.

And that’s it, folks. Just like that, The Carmichael Show is over after 32 episodes. Now, we turn it over to you: Did the NBC comedy go out on top? Grade the final episodes via our poll, then mourn amongst yourselves in the comments section below.

This time around, we’ve got a patriotic monologue on Fargo, brutal career advice from the Daytime Divas, common ground found on Orphan Black and a well-placed F-bomb courtesy of Twin Peaks‘ Diane.

Also featured in this week’s roundup: double doses of The Carmichael Show, Pretty Little Liars and Blood Drive, one of which includes our raciest quote in recent memory. (Trust us: You’ll know it when you see it.)

Carmichael Show Debates Significance of the N-Word In Buzzed-About Ep https://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-debates-significance-of-the-n-word-in-buzzed-about-ep/ https://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-debates-significance-of-the-n-word-in-buzzed-about-ep/#respond Thu, 22 Jun 2017 02:14:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-debates-significance-of-the-n-word-in-buzzed-about-ep/

Leave it to The Carmichael Show to outdo the sheer awkwardness of its Bill Cosby discussion. In Wednesday’s episode, Cynthia’s birthday is nearly ruined after Jerrod’s white friend refers to him as “my n–ga.”

The half hour begins with a conversation about things black people should and shouldn’t be allowed to say. The back-and-forth is sparked by Jerrod and Maxine’s present for Cynthia: a first edition copy of Jacqueline Kennedy’s biography. Bobby immediately calls the gift stupid, insisting that “black people don’t read like that.” Joe agrees with his son, but refers to the generalization as an “embarrassment that black people would rather sweep under the rug — like Stacey Dash.” Jerrod then encourages everyone to divulge other things they’ve been too afraid to say out loud, leading Cynthia to admit that she isn’t a Denzel Washington fan.

To steer his family away from the idea that they can only do things that other black people approve of, Jerrod takes everyone out to Florentine’s, a fancy restaurant owned by the aforementioned white friend, Drew. When they arrive, Jerrod thanks Drew for getting them in at last minute, to which Drew responds, “Anything for you, my n–ga, you know that!”

Once seated, Joe makes his discomfort known: “When a white man uses the N-word, that is a fire alarm in a burning building that you need to get out of.” Jerrod, on the other hand, couldn’t disagree more. “We don’t have to be outraged every time we hear the word, alright? That’s just another black rule that hurts us more than it helps us,” he argues. “It’s just a distraction. We should focus on things that actually matter, like voter suppression, instead of Hulk Hogan or Dog the Bounty Hunter or Justin Timberlake using the N-word.” But that’s not enough to quell the discussion.

Cynthia goes on to voice her own discontent with the current generation’s use of the word, but is willing to let this particular instance go — that is, until she learns Drew is white. In response, Jerrod defends Drew, who has had “nothing but black friends, has dated nothing but black girls,” and is currently wearing Air Jordans. Maxine, meanwhile, argues that Drew’s appropriation of black culture shouldn’t give him a free pass. Moments later, Maxine inadvertently blurts out the derogatory term for the entire restaurant to hear, giving the family the push they need to finally get up and leave.

In the end, the Carmichaels wind up back at Niecy’s, where they’ve dined every other year for Cynthia’s birthday. Both mad at Maxine and displeased with the wait service, Cynthia bookends the episode by making unexpected use of the very word that triggered a dialogue: “Got me up here on my birthday, eating with all these n–gas.” And just like that, with the perfect delivery, Loretta Devine sends the entire audience into hysterics as the scene comes to a close.

What did you think of The Carmichael Show‘s N-word debate?

Jerrod Carmichael Says NBC Did a “Disservice to All of Us” in Not Airing a Mass Shooting-Oriented Episode of ‘The Carmichael Show’ https://briefnews.eu/jerrod-carmichael-says-nbc-did-a-disservice-to-all-of-us-in-not-airing-a-mass-shooting-oriented-episode-of-the-carmichael-show/ https://briefnews.eu/jerrod-carmichael-says-nbc-did-a-disservice-to-all-of-us-in-not-airing-a-mass-shooting-oriented-episode-of-the-carmichael-show/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2017 23:34:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jerrod-carmichael-says-nbc-did-a-disservice-to-all-of-us-in-not-airing-a-mass-shooting-oriented-episode-of-the-carmichael-show/ Despite being a sitcom, The Carmichael Show isn’t afraid to tackle major and often harrowing political issues. They’ve taken on police brutality, and will soon air an episode in which the N-word is spoken, un-bleeped, six times, with a disclaimer beforehand. NBC, unfortunately and unsurprisingly, is a bit more finicky. Last night, an episode of the series that was supposed to air was switched out at the last minute. It was about gun violence, and specifically mass shootings, and followed Jerrod Carmichael’s character in the aftermath of a surviving one of these chillingly common American tragedies.

As the Hollywood Reporter notes, apparently because of the two (yes, two) shootings yesterday — the first injuring Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise and three others during a of a congressional baseball practice, the second at a San Francisco UPS, killing three — NBC subbed the episode, titled “Shoot-up-able,” out for another (“Lesbian Wedding”). The one that was set to air would’ve apparently seen Carmichael’s character being smothered with affection by his family after the event, then having difficulty recounting to a police officer trauma of what he experienced. Carmichael spoke on Chelsea — in an episode that’ll air in full on Friday on Netflix — about his political disagreements with the network’s decision (which they hadn’t finalized at the time of the interview). He said:

I thought that [the] episode would have an opportunity to talk about these tragedies in a meaningful way, to really lend itself to conversation. A lot of times when things like this happen and someone wants to talk about it in an outlet that’s not the news, people will say “too soon.” But when is it not too soon? Unfortunately, these things happen constantly and it’s a thing that breaks all of our hearts…The episode is about me, the character Jerrod, surviving a mass shooting and coming to the realization that although he wasn’t physically harmed, he is still very much so, a victim…Right now NBC wants to pull the episode. I understand a corporation making that decision, but really, to me, what it says is that you don’t think America is smart enough to handle real dialogue and something that reflects real family conversations and something that feels honest and true and still respects the victims. We handled the episode with as much love and integrity as we could. To pull that is just criminal. It does a disservice to the viewer. It does a disservice to you, it does a disservice to all of us.

At the point he did the interview on Chelsea, he was still hopeful that he and NBC would have a conversation and air the episode last night — but it obviously didn’t happen. Indeed, it must be asked: in a country where in 2015 (for example), mass shootings wounding and/or killing over four were happening an average of over once a day, what exactly would NBC deem an appropriate time to air an episode of television like this? The very frequency of it makes it perpetually inappropriate and perpetually worthy of rubbing in the faces of a country dead-set on ignoring the fact that it’s become weaponized against itself.

NBC has not yet chosen a new date for “Shoot-up-able” to air.

NBC’s The Carmichael Show opened Season 3 on Wednesday with 4.3 million total viewers and a 0.9 demo rating, matching its Season 2 average and sharply improving on the final four episodes of that run; TVLine readers gave the episode an average grade of “B+.” A second episode ticked down to 3.5 mil and a 0.8.

Opening the Peacock’s night, the relocated Little Big Shots (7.6 mil/1.2) added eyeballs but dipped a tenth versus its most recent Sunday airing, and led the night in both measures.

All NBC numbers are subject to adjustment due to MLB preemption.

Wednesday’s only other fresh broadcast fare was on Fox, where MasterChef (3.5 mil/1.0) dipped 8 and 16 percent from its previous premiere. The F Word With Gordon Ramsay (3.4 mil/1.1) built on the demo number, and together the cooking shows led Fox to a demo win for the night.

Carmichael Show Premiere Tackles Rape, Consent and President Trump https://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-premiere-tackles-rape-consent-and-president-trump/ https://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-premiere-tackles-rape-consent-and-president-trump/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2017 01:55:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/carmichael-show-premiere-tackles-rape-consent-and-president-trump/ When The Carmichael Show last aired over a year ago, Jerrod and his family were split among presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. In Wednesday’s Season 3 premiere, Trump, now president, is once again at the center of a discussion — this time about rape culture and the importance of consent.

In “Yes Means Yes,” Maxine learns that her former co-worker Sarah has written a Facebook post in which she reveals she was raped. Maxine reads the post at the dinner table; to sum up, Sarah writes that she went back to a man’s place and agreed to make out with him but never agreed to have sex. Afterward, Joe, Cynthia and Jerrod express doubt as to whether she was actually raped. Jerrod even goes so far as to say that “if we just jump to conclusions, a rape accusation can really ruin a man’s life.” Disgusted by the response, Maxine argues that verbal consent is always required, which leads to a larger discussion about rape fantasies and safe words — you know, like Nekeisha’s safe word: Mike Pence.

Bobby, attempting to absorb all of this information, suddenly stands at the far end of the table, petrified that he might have raped a one-night stand during a drunken hook-up. As he explains to the family, the sexual encounter seemed innocent enough, but he was too intoxicated to remember whether he was ever given a verbal “yes.” He doesn’t remember her ever saying “no,” either… except for before their date, when she playfully told him that they definitely weren’t having sex that night.

The Carmichaels’ conversation then transitions back to Jerrod’s earlier point. Being the contrarian that he is, Jerrod argues that being falsely accused of rape can be nearly as damaging on the psyche as the act of rape itself. Maxine quickly dismisses the idea, pointing out that those famously accused, but never convicted — such as Kobe Bryant, Roman Polanski, Julian Assange and Cee Lo Green — all have continued to find work. She then suggests that the election of President Trump — without ever mentioning him by name — is proof that the country as a whole doesn’t pay enough attention to sexual assault or its victims.

“A man that bragged about sexually assaulting women, and then dismissed it as ‘locker room talk,’ was elected president of the United States,” she says, alluding to Trump’s infamous Access Hollywood bus tape scandal. “Clearly, we don’t take it seriously enough.”

Bobby, whose fear isn’t helped by the fact that his date hasn’t responded to any of his texts, is further terrified when she posts the following tweet: “Trying to forget about last night, but I can’t. Need good energy right now.” And that’s when he decides to confront her in person, because “the only thing worse than being the type of guy that does something like this is being the kind of guy who tries to get away with it.”

The woman, whose name we learn is Natalie, ultimately assures Bobby that she wanted to have sex with him and that he did nothing wrong. As for her earlier tweet? Well, Bobby just happens to be really bad at sex, and she’d like to forget about their encounter altogether. (Needless to say, there won’t be a second date.)

PREMISE| Stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael plays a heightened version of himself in this multi-camera sitcom, which revolves around the tight-knit Carmichael family. Though now living on his own with girlfriend Maxine (Greek‘s Amber Stevens West), he frequently finds himself back at his parents’ home, where everyone gets into heated discussions about current events and contemporary issues. Among those who make up Jerrod’s family: wise-cracking older brother Bobby (Lil Rel Howery), Bobby’s ex-wife Nekeisha (Tiffany Haddish) and extremely opinionated ‘rents Cynthia and Joe (played by Grey’s Anatomy‘s Loretta Devine and In Living Color‘s David Alan Grier).

Each episode predominantly takes place in the Carmichaels’ living room, with Jerrod and Maxine coming for a visit and bringing up whatever debate they were having earlier in the episode, which gives Joe and Cynthia an opportunity to chime in. Among the vast range of topics tackled during Seasons 1 and 2: Black Lives Matter, gentrification, Islamophobia, prayer in school, porn addiction and transgenderism. Two of the show’s most buzzed about episodes featured discussions about whether it’s still OK to recognize Bill Cosby (among other controversial celebs) for his talent after he was accused of 50+ counts of sexual assault, and in an episode that aired all the way back in May 2016 (which at this point feels like a lifetime ago), whether members of the family could support Donald Trump’s run for president.

WORTH YOUR TIME IF YOU ENJOY… | Norman Lear’s brand of comedy. In other words, a well made sitcom shot in front of a live studio audience that is just as likely to make you laugh as it is to make you think. The Carmichael Show is perhaps most similar to All in the Family in that the action is typically confined to the one living room set, and that “action” is merely a discussion amongst the show’s central characters. (For what it’s worth, the show would fit perfectly in a block featuring Mom, The Ranch and Lear’s One Day at a Time remake, fellow contemporary multi-cams with distinctive points of view that are never just looking for a cheap punchline.) If you appreciate Carmichael’s stand-up comedy, you’re bound to like what you see here.

YOU SHOULD PROBABLY ALSO KNOW…| You’re not always going to agree with the direction of the conversation amongst the Carmichaels, or Jerrod’s overall opinion on any given topic. Don’t be fooled: Though the discussions at hand tend to be quite progressive, the family is almost always divided on where they stand. Jerrod’s opinions, especially, tend to be more right-of-center (at least when compared to the über-liberal Maxine), taking after his father. In other words: This isn’t just a show catering to the left.

IS IT COMING BACK?| Yes. Season 3 (which will consist of 13 episodes) premieres Wednesday, May 31, at 9/8c.
