  • Staff members at the Denver International Airport are caring for a college student’s pet fish after Southwest Airlines would not let her fly with the animal prior to boarding a flight last week, USA Today has reported.
  • “The fish was found at the airport last week by an airport employee and turned in to an information booth (as is common with lost and found items),” The Denver International Airport told USA Today in a statement.
  • “We’ve been in touch with Lanice and she is making arrangements to get him back,” the statement adds.
  • Southwest’s pet policy website states that only “small vaccinated domestic cats and dogs” are allowed to be taken on board flights, and they must be placed under the seat in front of their owner.

Staff members at the Denver International Airport are caring for a college student’s pet fish after Southwest Airlines would not let the animal board one of its flights last week, USA Today reported.

As Business Insider reported last week, according to ABC 10 News San Diego, University of Colorado student Lanice Powless was traveling from Denver to San Diego on December 12 when she said that a Southwest staff member did not allow her to board the flight with her pink male beta fish, Cassie.

Kitten’d Has Players Putting Out Fires & Caring For Felines https://briefnews.eu/kittend-has-players-putting-out-fires-caring-for-felines/ https://briefnews.eu/kittend-has-players-putting-out-fires-caring-for-felines/#respond Fri, 13 Jul 2018 05:53:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kittend-has-players-putting-out-fires-caring-for-felines/ kittend_header.jpg

Most cat owners have had to deal with their fair share of chaos when taking care of their trouble-seeking furball. VR game Kitten’d wants experienced cat owners to take the ultimate test: keep a ton of cute kittens out of danger, be it from starting fires to activating lasers to just making a mess of things.

Happy kitties means a happy, clean, and ultimately disaster-free life. You’ll be tasked with cleaning up after the kittens, playing with them, and making sure they have lots of love, gaining points as you do so. Keeping dozens of cats all happy and cared for isn’t easy, but you can redeem the points you get for upgrades in your arsenal, like a PoopScoop 3000, and you’ll have an easier time taking care of your numerous, yet adorable, responsibilities.

Your points aren’t permanent though; if you aren’t careful in watching your kittens and they start on a path of destruction, you’ll lose points for each thing destroyed. These cats can get pretty creative in their destruction across the game’s environments, too, activating laser turrets or just setting the stove on fire. The longer you can keep your home from going down in flames, the better your chances of gaining the tools to take care of your kitten horde.

Not that it’s all hard work. You can get up close and personal with the 7 different breeds to interact with in this virtual experience, and also be able to watch all sorts of catty interactions, good or bad. Just don’t let their cute faces distract you from the mayhem they’re likely about to start.

You can find Kitten’d on Steam here. You can also check out the official website, Twitter, and Facebook.

World’s Largest Movie Theater Chain Essentially Admits to Not Caring About Theatrical Presentation https://briefnews.eu/worlds-largest-movie-theater-chain-essentially-admits-to-not-caring-about-theatrical-presentation/ https://briefnews.eu/worlds-largest-movie-theater-chain-essentially-admits-to-not-caring-about-theatrical-presentation/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2017 23:49:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/worlds-largest-movie-theater-chain-essentially-admits-to-not-caring-about-theatrical-presentation/ theatrical presentation

(Welcome to The Soapbox, the space where we get personal, political, and opinionated about anything and everything. In this edition: AMC Theaters admits that they don’t care about masking, and why this is bad.)

We’re aware there are terrible things happening in our country right now, and yes, complaining about movie theater screens is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. But damn it, instead of getting overwhelmed by those things, cinephiles occasionally want to lose ourselves in a terrific theatrical experience. And when the world’s largest theater chain has basically admitted that they no longer care about the way their movies are presented to audiences, that’s worth grumbling about.

Chances are pretty high that when you go see a movie, you see it in an AMC Theater. That company has the largest market share of American theaters and is the biggest movie theater chain on the planet. You may assume that because of this lofty position of power they hold in the industry, AMC might want to set a good example by exhibiting movies in the best possible quality in an attempt to lure more customers; after all, attendance is declining and while theaters make the majority of their money in concessions, humans are still a necessary component of their business model.

But as you may have gleaned from this article’s headline, that’s not the case.

Filmmaker Mike Williamson took a photo calling out AMC’s lack of masking in one of their theaters, and instead of the chain seeing that complaint and ensuring their paying customer that they’d work to correct the problem, they essentially admitted that they simply no longer care about the way their movies are exhibited.

For those who don’t know anything about masking, I recommend reading this ScreenCrush article from last year. Here’s the gist: masking is the process of expanding or shrinking the borders of a screen to allow a film to fill the entire screen. Movies are most filmed in one of two different aspect ratios (“full” or “scope”), and most theaters are equipped to present either on any given screen, traditionally using motorized curtains to completely surround the image. This is a key part of the presentation because it allows the audience to have a much more immersive experience. Lately, though, some theaters haven’t been bothering to mask their movies as often, resulting in experiences like Mike Williamson’s, in which distracting gray bars are visible throughout the entire movie.

As Williamson pointed out in a subsequent tweet, letterboxing in a theater gives the appearance that you’re watching something on a television screen at home – and with the rise of digital projection, complaints about movies looking like TV have been flying around for years already. This certainly isn’t going to help, and for AMC to cop to their lack of masking and try to hide behind the “clean lines and edges” of their digital projectors is embarrassing. Are they actively trying to drive consumers away at this point?

How can a company acknowledge something that looks like complete garbage, nod and smile, openly state that they’re making it look like that on purpose, and then charge you a premium price for your ticket? Unless there’s a big enough uproar about this that AMC reverse this policy, audiences have lost yet another battle in the ongoing war of simply trying to have a high quality theatrical experience. When the world’s largest theater chain is so open about their disdain for presentation, it’s no wonder people aren’t going to the movies as much anymore.

In the age of AI, Google wants you to stop caring about specs https://briefnews.eu/in-the-age-of-ai-google-wants-you-to-stop-caring-about-specs/ https://briefnews.eu/in-the-age-of-ai-google-wants-you-to-stop-caring-about-specs/#respond Thu, 05 Oct 2017 18:23:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/in-the-age-of-ai-google-wants-you-to-stop-caring-about-specs/

Do the specs matter on a new smartphone? Google wants you to think it doesn’t matter as much anymore, and I can see some logic in that view.

To the casual user, what matters is whether the phone responds to voice commands, processes the information, and even just sits on the table and looks cool while you do other things. At the same time, we all know the specs do matter — and Google took great pains to cover the specifications on the new Google Pixel 2 phone.

But what’s really going on here? Google is not afraid to call out Apple in subtle ways, mentioning at the reveal event yesterday that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have some of the same optics, a swipe at the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus using different cameras.

“Moore’s law and Dennard scaling are ideas of the past,” said Rick Osterloh, the senior vice president of hardware at Google, asserting that the continuum for processing power improvements are not as important as they once were. “The playing field for hardware components in smartphones is leveling off. Core features are table stakes now. We’re taking a very different approach at Google. Smartphones are reaching parity on their specs.”

He’s right about one thing: The user doesn’t care that much. They walk into an AT&T store or shop online, and they see the fancy new features. The bot can give you directions and text your wife all in one step! The image recognition features can identify where you’re standing based on a photo! Of course these features depend greatly on the chipset, RAM, and operating system to work — but the part where Google has a point is the long-term strategy. The user is not as into the speeds and feeds as they once were because they now assume all phones will be fast and reliable. They don’t pay as much attention to Intel and AMD and the chipset innovations that seem to be inching forward with each passing year. They don’t want to keep track of the exact processor used on a new smartphone, since they figure it’s a little better and a little faster than the one from last year or even a few months ago.

It’s a sign of overproliferation. Someone seems to have some kind of launch event every month: faster, better, longer-lasting. But what about smarter? That’s what the user base really wants — please relieve us from the tedium of tapping on apps all day. Most of the apps we use run fast enough now, there’s no issue with storage for most of us (unless you shoot videos on 4K), and there’s plenty of RAM to keep things running smoothly for the most part.

Few of us buy a new phone and show it to friends and family and say “Look at how fast this runs for apps!” Most of us set the phone down these days and tell Google to turn the flashlight on or solve a tough math problem. That’s the cool part. That’s the part that sells phones (and tablets, and eventually laptops like the Google Pixelbook).

All that said, the AI on your phone will require a lot of processing power. It’s why Apple is using a neural engine on the new iPhone X to process things like scanning your face. The great irony is that it feels like Google is saying “it’s not about specs” while likely refocusing entire teams on how to speed up AI processing on modern chipsets. The need for speed has not changed at all. What has changed is market perception. The shift is now all about what we need to use all of that speed to do. Importantly, it’s now about cloud processing and using the vast storehouse of data from other users to make AI to work effectively.

And, by the way, that’s all incredibly dependent on chipsets, RAM, and storage.

When Will the Economy Start Caring About Home-Care Work? https://briefnews.eu/when-will-the-economy-start-caring-about-home-care-work/ https://briefnews.eu/when-will-the-economy-start-caring-about-home-care-work/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2017 19:02:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/when-will-the-economy-start-caring-about-home-care-work/ For six weeks, LaTanya Thomas, a personal-care assistant in Minneapolis, worked without pay, helping to clean, dress, and feed her client. She and her colleagues asked their boss where their paychecks were. They spoke with the bank. They accepted five- or 10-dollar bills as a little something to tide them over, she said, rolling their eyes when their boss promised that their checks would be cleared by Monday and when she told them to go sign up for food stamps. They threatened to quit. Eventually, some of them did, and eventually, the company went bankrupt. (Its lawyers did not respond to requests for comment.)

“I hung in there because of the client I was taking care of,” Thomas told me. “His other [personal-care assistants] had quit because they couldn’t work without pay. But he was on a special program, and I was the only one left who could take care of him.” That decision ultimately cost her $ 4,000 in lost wages, she estimated.

Home-health and personal-care work is one of the country’s fastest-growing occupational sectors. But it is one marked by low pay and meager benefits, a problem that might become more urgent as the U.S.’s population continues to age. On top of that, care workers face high rates of wage theft, tax and benefits misclassification, and employer fraud, according to a new report from the National Employment Law Project (NELP), a think tank and advocacy organization.

NELP surveyed more than 3,000 personal-care and home-health workers, from nearly every U.S. state, asking questions about their pay schedules and relationship with their employers. A majority of respondents said that they often worked after-hours, without pay. Two in five said they never received overtime payments, even when they worked more than 40 hours per week. Four in five said they did not have a paid sick-day benefit. A quarter were potentially misclassified as independent contractors.

“There were parts that were not particularly shocking, about poor working conditions, low wages, and the challenges these workers face every day just to stay in this field,” Caitlin Connolly, one of the report’s authors, said. “For me, the more startling pieces were in terms of the stark differences in insurance coverage, paid time off, retirement coverage, and training opportunities.”

Thomas, for instance, alleged two incidents of wage theft during her time as a personal-care assistant. “People in this occupation do not even know it’s wage theft,” she told me. “One lady was working overtime, and they cut her regular per-hour pay. I said, ‘That’s wage theft!’ There’s no way they can cut your regular pay so they aren’t getting you a real time-and-a-half.”

The workers’ complaints centered on low wages and a lack of training, among other issues. In the NELP’s study, most respondents reported making between $ 7.25 an hour, the federal minimum wage, and $ 15 an hour. Four in five said they got fewer hours than they requested, too. Given those pay rates, about half of personal-care workers rely on programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid, and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program—itself often difficult to get and penurious with benefits—to get by.

Thomas and other respondents said that personal relationships with their clients kept them on the job, despite the low wages, difficult working conditions, and fraud. “I’ve worked with a 97-year-old woman for the past two years. I try to treat her with so much tender loving care and she always reminds me of how much she loves me,” one worker said in the report. “I help to lift up her spirits. Home care is not just about going by the care plan. It doesn’t say ‘Comfort her’ or ‘Make her feel like she’s a part of society.’”

Improving training programs for personal-care workers might help both with the quality of the work and the quality of client life, the report indicated. The vast majority of workers said they wanted more training to improve their skills and better serve their clients. That might help with the country’s health-care cost crisis, as well. “Many acute, long-term illnesses can be cared for in the home. This was never really a babysitting job,” said Anastasia Christman, a senior policy analyst at NELP. “These workers see it as, and want to become, more specialized, to provide people with the best service for specific conditions and letting them remain in the home.” Connolly added: “I don’t want to over-medicalize the profession, but there are untapped opportunities there.”

Even absent that upskilling of the workforce, the report stressed the need for bolstering workplace protections, improving pay rates, boosting unionization rates, addressing labor misclassification, and putting in place more stringent rules on time off and benefits to aid all workers. And labor experts and state officials have long advocated for more oversight of firms supplying home-care workers, which are often subject to far less scrutiny than nursing homes and medical facilities. “If you train people well in the job, they’ll do well,” Thomas said. “If you pay people right, they’ll continue to work.”

Amie Stepanovich‏ has been shuttling back and forth between Washington, DC, and Ohio, where her father is “very sick and currently in the hospital and unable to speak for himself,” she wrote in a series of tweets yesterday. Stepanovich has power of attorney for her father and wants to reduce his Comcast bill, which costs “quite a lot” of money each month.

But when she called Comcast last weekend, a company rep “told me they couldn’t handle [the] request on [the] phone because I wasn’t authorized,” she wrote.

Stepanovich says she was instructed to take her father’s identification and hospital bills to a Comcast service center in order to get the Comcast bill reduced. She tried to call the nearest service center “to verify what I was told before I drove, but you can’t call service centers directly—only published number is [the] main line that I’d already called.”
