  • India is scrambling to replace canceled Russian gas deliveries, driving GAIL India to pay $ 40 per million BTUs for LNG.
  • That's the most expensive LNG cargo to ship to India in history, traders told Bloomberg.
  • It's also a sign India is struggling to fill the hole in Russian supplies after a Gazprom branch was seized by Germany.

India is scrambling to replace canceled Russian gas deliveries, causing one gas company to pay for the nation's most expensive liquefied natural gas cargo in history.

GAIL India, the largest gas distributor in the country, purchased three LNG cargoes last week for over $ 40 per million British thermal units, traders familiar with the matter told Bloomberg on Monday. Those are record prices for any LNG cargo to be delivered to India, more than doubling the prices paid last year.

It's also a sign the country is struggling to fill the hole in Russian supplies, as competition with energy-strapped Europe has driven natural gas prices to sky-high levels.

India has become one of Russia's largest fuel customers since the invasion of Ukraine, but some of those flows have been interrupted as the result of Germany seizing a local branch of Russia's Gazprom, using that plant to direct supplies to Europe instead ahead of winter.

The plant, which was renamed as Securing Energy for Europe, told GAIL that it no longer had supplies for India, and is currently paying a small fine for not delivering promised LNG shipments in October.

GAIL attempted negotiation with the plant last month, according to GAIL chairman Manoh Jain, but no new deal has been announced yet.

Jain claimed last month that failed deliveries from the plant only affected 10%-15% of India's gas supplies and were not significant, Reuters reported, although he noted that the company was concerned about securing gas supplies in the long-term.

Cruise ships carry a huge number of passengers and crew on board along with all their luggage and food.

Thanks to modern technology, storage, especially of food items, is now much easier.

But back in the 19th century, cruise companies had to be resourceful.

In 1840 Cunard’s RMS Britannia set forth on its maiden transatlantic voyage.

Such a journey in those days would have taken 15 days. However, passengers on this trip benefited from a special treat.

A dairy cow was brought on board the ship to provide everyone with fresh milk.

British writer Charles Dickens was on the Britannia and described the sight of “one party of men were ’taking in the milk,’” meaning they were bringing the animal on board.

The cow was kept slung across the deck in a hammock during the sea voyage.

Sadly, the beast never saw dry land again after it boarded the Britannia.

It went on to be killed on the ship, with everyone sitting down to a steak dinner courtesy of the animal.

A Cunard spokeswoman confirmed this was the case. “In 1840 a cow did travel on board to supply milk,” she told Express.co.uk.

“It was slaughtered on the last day of the voyage when everyone enjoyed a steak dinner.”

These days, bringing a cow on board is not necessary, but over 68,000 pints of milk are stocked for a two-week cruise.

Life on board a cruise ship is synonymous with glamour nowadays – but this wasn’t always the case.

Dickens’ voyage on the Britannia in 1842 was blighted by bad weather.

“I am awakened out of my sleep by a dismal shriek from my wife… I rouse myself and look out of bed,“ he wrote.

“All the smaller articles are afloat, expect my shoes, which are stranded on a carpet bag, high and dry, like a couple of coal barges.”

He later added: “Several berths are full of water and all the cabins are leaky.”

A cow might have been a bizarre thing to bring on board a ship, but at least it wasn’t unlucky.

Some items are considered very unlucky to being aboard – bananas in particular.

Where Did the Rhine Go? Drought-Hit Cargo River Sparks Economic Fears https://briefnews.eu/where-did-the-rhine-go-drought-hit-cargo-river-sparks-economic-fears/ https://briefnews.eu/where-did-the-rhine-go-drought-hit-cargo-river-sparks-economic-fears/#respond Fri, 02 Nov 2018 07:11:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/where-did-the-rhine-go-drought-hit-cargo-river-sparks-economic-fears/ Plummeting water levels in the drought-hit Rhine River are disrupting shipping and squeezing European supplies of important industrial commodities from coal to motor fuel.

Switzerland tapped its emergency stockpiles of diesel this week after some stretches of the river receded to knee-high levels and fuel barges could not reach the country. The shortage of deliveries sent prices at the pump soaring — a reaction more commonly associated with war in the Middle East than dry weather in Germany.

BASF, the German chemicals group, has had to curtail production at the world’s largest integrated chemicals facility at Ludwigshafen. It is warning of potential shortages of certain products, creating supply chain headaches for industries across the Continent. “With the current water level, only few barges can dock,” BASF said in a statement. “Even if some goods are transferred to alternative means of transport such as trucks or trains, the supply of some important raw materials will be restricted.”

The disruption highlights the role that the 745-mile-long river, a vital waterway for international trade since the days of the Holy Roman Empire, still plays in carrying seaborne goods through Germany’s industrial heartland.

We’re really hoping for a wet autumn.

Christoph Kösters, head of German transport association VWL

Water levels in the river are at their lowest since the 1920s after a prolonged drought, sparking concern from businesses and governments over the potential economic impact. It is also raising questions about how climate change will hit Europe’s transport infrastructure.

Christoph Kösters, head of the VWL, a German transport association, says the problems started with low levels of Alpine snowmelt this spring, followed by a dry summer. “We had the problem this year that there was relatively little melted snow and ice coming down into the Rhine,” Kösters says. “A lot of goods have been warehoused in anticipation of this problem. But the longer this situation persists, the bigger the risk of shortages. In a few weeks, it could get harder.”

In Cologne, the biggest city on the Rhine, the average water level is normally more than 9 feet but has fallen below 28 inches in parts. The lowest level in recorded history in 1929 was 24 inches, a level officials think could be surpassed soon if rains do not arrive. Ferry services have been halted at many points along the river.

S&P Global Platts, which provides oil and commodities coverage, says barges are struggling to enter the upper Rhine beyond Kaub, a major shipping chokepoint between Koblenz and Mainz. Traders have struggled to find alternative means of transport at short notice. “Though rail cars and trucks are often considered an alternative to barge shipments along the Rhine, possible capacities appear to have been reached,” S&P said in a statement.

The cost of available barges has risen from just $ 4–$ 5 per metric ton to more than $ 40 — a cost likely to be passed on to consumers.

The price of heating oil, which many German and Swiss homes rely on in the winter months, has jumped in areas serviced by the river. In Hamburg, 100 liters of the fuel costs approximately 76 euros, Klaus Bergmann of the Esyoil consultancy said last week, while in Stuttgart prices are closer to 100 euros.

While weather forecasts predict showers, many expect a prolonged deluge will be needed to make a significant difference. “We’re really hoping for a wet autumn,” says Kösters.

Cargo cruising deep into Canada’s French First Nations territory https://briefnews.eu/cargo-cruising-deep-into-canadas-french-first-nations-territory/ https://briefnews.eu/cargo-cruising-deep-into-canadas-french-first-nations-territory/#respond Fri, 31 Aug 2018 03:09:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cargo-cruising-deep-into-canadas-french-first-nations-territory/
Tim Johnson

Tim Johnson

August 30, 2018

The best way to navigate Canada’s mighty St. Lawrence river? By cargo ship, of course—Tim Johnson traces a shipping route that delivers essential goods to remote First Nations and Québécois Canadians.

At this point, here on the south shore, it seems a little ridiculous to call the St. Lawrence a river.

One of Canada’s great waterways—the one that links the Great Lakes with the North Atlantic and brought European explorers like Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain deep into the heart of this part of the New World—it cleaves a massive divide into two provinces on the eastern end of the country. And when the mighty St. Lawrence reaches Rimouski, in Quebec’s Bas-Saint-Laurent region, you can scarcely see across it.

Sailing east from here, it only gets bigger, and wider, and stronger, eventually emptying into a gulf of the same name. But across on the north shore, the population thins out, just a string of small villages separated by forest and bush so complete it could swallow you whole. Living in relative isolation, each one of these communities occupies its own little world.

And then the road ends. “After that, you need to travel by snowmobile, plane, or this vessel,” says Francis Roy, president of Relais Nordik, the company that owns and operates the MV Bella Desgagnes as he gives me a tour of the relatively small ship. “And then you’ll really feel the difference. French, English and First nations—the Lower North Shore is a mixture of cultures.”

RELATED: Road tripping Canada’s surf highway

Boarding in Rimouski, I’m about to sail northeast, a 2,200-kilometer round-trip, for a week on the Bella. A workhorse of a vessel, the 97-meter ship can carry almost 400 guests, both in passenger decks lined with airline-style seats and 63 private cabins, sailing to the edge of the Far North, ferrying both vacationers to Canada’s maritime provinces and locals between remote communities.

Many of the latter belong to Quebec’s First Nations; tiny, isolated spots rich in history and culture. I’m here to sail to the Labrador border (and back), connecting with indigenous and Québécois Canadians, seeing the diversity in their communities—and along the way becoming more than slightly obsessed with the cargo.

As we proceed east toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the coastline fleeing from sight on both sides, we see corners of the country rarely spotted by even adventurous Québécois. I settle into my functional cabin, sleeping well on the waves, occasionally awakened in the middle of the night by the slight movement of the ship. There’s no casino or swimming pool, so I content myself with conversation, up on the top decks or while eating meals with other guests in the dining room.

RELATED: The resurgence of Canada’s First Nations cuisine

And at each stop, I disembark and take a tour, unpolished little excursions organized for a minimal fee by local residents to give us something to do while they unload and load the cargo.

It’s always clear that the guides are proud of their towns (and their resilience). On 222-kilometer-long Anticosti Island, I spot wild deer wandering right through the heart of the main (and only) village, Port-Menier, and learn that while 216 residents live here, the island is home to more than 200,000 deer.

In one such village, La Romaine, we board a short yellow school bus, defying the foul weather that has closed in, oppressive clouds and heavy rain. Bumping along, we learn some of the darker chapters in the history of the area. As we pass the local Catholic church with its knotty-line altar, our guide tells us how, for decades, local kids were separated from their families and forced to attend ’residential schools’ where abuse was common and children were barred from speaking their own language or going home.

Later, at Saint-Augustin, a brief stop without a tour, I walk up an incline to a tipi set up within view of the ship, and push through the language barrier to speak with an Innu man. The Innu, or Montagnais, are the Indigenous people from this part of Quebec, which they know as Nitassinan (‘our land’), and the man has set up in that spot with his family to help share his culture with visitors. He shows a small group of us a few traditional tricks, including how to cook a meal over a fire, before we need to chase the setting sun back to the Bella before she casts off again.

We reach the road again at Blanc-Sablon, population 1,200, and the terminus of our journey. Meaning ‘white sand’, the shores here are lined with beaches and—despite its subarctic latitude—Caribbean-blue waters. A busy port-of-call over the years for whalers, sailors, and cod and lobster fishermen, archaeology has revealed settlement here for some 8,000 years, back to the Basque (sailors from the Basque, Spain, whaled and fished Newfoundland from 1525) and beyond.

Most of the holidaymakers on board disembark here, waiting on the shore for their SUVs and Subarus to be dropped down onto the dock by the crane. Most of them will drive out of the box and over to the next slip, boarding the big ferry and heading for Newfoundland, just across the Strait of Belle Isle.

But not me. I stand there, still in awe of all that cargo, watching the crane swing container after container back on board, ready to load up and head all the way back to Rimouski.

The Yangtze River nearly swallowed up a cargo ship after it hit rocks in south west China earlier this weeks.

Shocking footage shows the large boat completely capsizing in the river.

Onlookers filmed the alarming incident and can be hard shouting as they watch the ship roll over onto its side and almost disappear into into murky water.

The ship hit rocks during docking procedures while carrying cement to Chongqing City on Monday, local news channel CGTN reported.

The footage shows the upturned hull of a boat still moving through the water.

Images depict the enormous hole ripped into the underside of the the boat from the impact.

Seven crew members were on board but they were all safely rescued.

Eight rescue vessels were believed to have been sent to the scene.

The ailing ship was later dragged to the shore.

At the time of the crash the cargo ship was loaded with 2,000 tons of cement.

Last month a viral video surfaced of two yachts crashing on the Hudson River during a high school prom.

While docked in Hoboken, a chain reaction in the water ended up pushing the larger boat into the smaller one.

In the video, the large boat is full of people on the very top deck.

Suddenly, it pushes into the smaller boat in front of it that is also docked.

It pushes up and damages the back of the yacht.

The smaller boat then crashes into the pier in front as well, damaging it further.

The captain can be heard yelling “I have no control” in another video of the event.

Onlookers gasp at the scene, as windows are smashed and the railings bend under the pressure from the larger ship.

The larger boat, called the Cornucopia Destiny, had 95 passengers and 11 teaching staff on it.

Thankfully no-one was hurt and students were taken back to the school.

Progress cargo spacecraft makes fastest-ever trip to space station (VIDEOS) https://briefnews.eu/progress-cargo-spacecraft-makes-fastest-ever-trip-to-space-station-videos/ https://briefnews.eu/progress-cargo-spacecraft-makes-fastest-ever-trip-to-space-station-videos/#respond Tue, 10 Jul 2018 04:43:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/progress-cargo-spacecraft-makes-fastest-ever-trip-to-space-station-videos/

A Russian Progress cargo spacecraft on a Soyuz booster carrying supplies for the International Space Station crew has successfully completed its record-breaking two-orbit trip in less than four hours.

The Progress MS-09 blasted off atop a Soyuz-2.1a rocket at 21:51 GMT Monday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Some 1.5 hours and several thruster firings after liftoff, the spacecraft’s onboard computers initiated the automated rendezvous sequence. The craft completed its radar-guided docking with the station’s Pirs module at 01:31 GMT Tuesday.

It was the third attempt to execute the short two-orbit flight scheme for the Progress MS freighter, which required a coordinated effort to realign the orbit of the ISS.Two previous attempts were hindered by delays in the final moments of the countdown that exceeded narrow launch opportunities for the fast-track flight.

Russian cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Prokopyev were on board the station and ready to take over manual control of the craft should any problems occur, but the docking proceeded in a fully automatic mode. The craft has brought over 2.5 tons of water, fuel, food and other supplies, extending the entire crucial provision supply to at least mid-January 2019.

NASA to pay more for less cargo delivery to the space station https://briefnews.eu/nasa-to-pay-more-for-less-cargo-delivery-to-the-space-station/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-to-pay-more-for-less-cargo-delivery-to-the-space-station/#respond Fri, 27 Apr 2018 01:23:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nasa-to-pay-more-for-less-cargo-delivery-to-the-space-station/

A new analysis finds that NASA will pay significantly more for commercial cargo delivery to the International Space Station in the 2020s rather than enjoying cost savings from maturing systems. According to a report by the space agency’s inspector general, Paul Martin, NASA will likely pay $ 400 million more for its second round of delivery contracts from 2020 to 2024 even though the agency will be moving six fewer tons of cargo. On a cost per kilogram basis, this represents a 14-percent increase.

One of the main reasons for this increase, the report says, is a 50-percent increase in prices from SpaceX, which has thus far flown the bulk of missions for NASA’s commercial cargo program with its Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket.

This is somewhat surprising because, during the first round of supply missions, which began in 2012, SpaceX had substantially lower costs than NASA’s other partner, Orbital ATK. SpaceX and Orbital ATK are expected to fly 31 supply missions between 2012 and 2020, the first phase of the supply contract. Of those, the new report states, SpaceX is scheduled to complete 20 flights at an average cost of $ 152.1 million per mission. Orbital ATK is scheduled to complete 11 missions at an average cost of $ 262.6 million per mission.
