Office of the President of Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is moving to overtake Russia from the inside out.
Russia's seven-month effort to conquer its neighbor, Ukraine, has recently been marked by a partial military mobilization, the country's first since World War II, NBC News reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization effort impacts 300,000 reservists — many of whom are going to great lengths to avoid being drafted. Some have even headed to the border, despite facing up to 10 years in prison for desertion.
In a video address late on Friday Ukraine time, Zelenskyy said he seeks to "sabotage" Russia's unprovoked efforts to conquer the country.
"If you get into the Russian army, then sabotage any enemy activity, interfere with any Russian operations, give us all important information about the occupiers: their bases, headquarters, ammunition depots," Zelenskyy said, addressing Russsian conscripts.
The mobilization effort comes after Ukrainian forces reclaimed much of Kharkiv, pushing Russian troops to hide amongst locals or retreat.
Russian troops are reportedly demoralized as their numbers wane. The Pentagon estimates Russian forces have faced anywhere between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties. Many Russians have grown to condemn the war as protests — and more than 1,000 arrests — ensue across the country.
In a Saturday address, Zelenskyy urged Russian forces to surrender, guaranteeing their safety.
"It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons, absolutely fair strikes, as Ukraine defends itself in this war. We defend the brightest — we defend our lives, our children, our freedom," he said, according to his website.
"Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians — they just need to replenish the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled or the Russian soldiers that were captured," the Ukrainian President added.
British and US officials argue that Putin's latest war efforts — including the mobilization effort and threatening the use of nuclear weapons — could mean his invasion is not going as planned.

]]>Nadi is one of thousands of Yazidi girls, captured and then enslaved by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists who would turn the girls – often no older than 10 years – into forced laborers, sex slaves, and send them on suicide missions. With the self-proclaimed IS caliphate crumbling, the slave trade has become a source of income for the retreating militants in need of money to flee the battlefield and resettle in nearby countries.
The girl was kidnapped in 2015 in Mosul – then a major IS stronghold in Iraq – where the group’s mastermind, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared a self-styled terrorist caliphate in June 2014. Though Mosul was “liberated” in July, Nadi’s long journey home ended just two hours before RT’s Murad Gazdiev spoke to her in Baghdad.
Asked how she feels now that her horrific ordeal is over, Nadi, still visibly shaken but already smiling, said “good, thank God.” She was rescued by a group of local men who track down Yazidi girls taken captive by ISIS and try to bring them back by either negotiating a price with the militants or stealing them.
Nadi’s family forked out $ 2,500, which was handed over to the militants in a clandestine exchange operation with no law enforcement involved as militants threaten to kill the captives if they are exposed.
“ISIS say that if we show the girls still in their possession – or if their relatives appear on TV – the deal will be off. That they’ll kill their hostages,” a man involved in the rescue told RT.
Despite all the difficulties and controversy, deals are still being struck with the terrorists, as remnants of ISIS are in desperate need of money and the relatives of the girls do not have much hope of ever seeing them again otherwise.
“When ISIS fighters flee to Turkey – they sell their slaves because they need money to go back to their home countries,” the man said.
Yazidi girls are treated by jihadists as human commodities that could be easily sold or given away as presents. A man, who preferred to stay anonymous, told RT that he knows several girls as young as 10, 11, and 12 who were “all raped” by the militants and “were gifted or sold as many as 15 times.”
The price tags militants put on the abducted girls and women ranges from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. “If they’re in a dangerous place – it can be 80 thousand dollars. Otherwise, around 10-15 thousand,” he said.
There are nearly 3,000 Yazidis that are still missing with their fate unknown according to Vian Dakhil, Yazidi Member of the Council of Representatives of Iraq, which has gained prominence for leading rescue efforts on behalf of Iraqi MPs. Dakhil would sometimes pay ransom with her own money, saying that no amount of money is worth more than a life.
“I was stunned by the tragedy of the Yazidi people,” she told RT. She recalled the story of a 12-year-old sex slave girl, who drugged her ISIS captors with sleeping pills and walked with her aunt 30km before they were rescued. “Yazidi women have incredible inner strength. At first I could not believe how they could endure all of this.”

TORONTO/OTTAWA (Reuters) – A kidnapped U.S.-Canadian couple freed in Pakistan this week, nearly five years after being abducted in neighboring Afghanistan, has returned to Canada, the Canadian government said on Friday.
American Caitlan Coleman and her Canadian husband, Joshua Boyle, were kidnapped while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012 by the Taliban-allied Haqqani network, which the United States has long accused Pakistan of failing to fight.
They had three children while in captivity.
“Today, we join the Boyle family in rejoicing over the long-awaited return to Canada of their loved ones,” the Canadian government said in a statement.
The family traveled from Pakistan to London and then to Toronto, where they arrived late on Friday, Canadian broadcaster CTV News tweet said. The final leg of their journey was an Air Canada flight Friday from London to Toronto.
Boyle provided a written statement to the Associated Press on the plane saying his family had “unparalleled resilience and determination.”
AP also reported that Coleman wore a tan-colored headscarf and sat with the two older children in the business class cabin. Boyle sat with their youngest child on his lap.
U.S. State Department officials were on the plane with them, AP added.
One of the children was in poor health and had to be force-fed by their Pakistani rescuers,Boyle told AP.
Reuters could not independently confirm the details.
They are expected to travel to Boyle‘s family home in Smiths Falls, 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Ottawa, to be reunited with his parents.
Canada has been actively engaged with Boyle‘s case at all levels and will continue to support the family, the government added.
“At this time, we ask that the privacy of Mr Boyle’s family be respected,” it said.
Media reported that Boyle‘s parents, Patrick and Linda Boyle, had acquired car-seats to help bring home the three grandchildren they have never met.
The journey home was complicated by Boyle‘s refusal to board a U.S. military aircraft in Pakistan, according to two U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. Boyle instead asked to be flown to Canada.
Boyle had once been married to the sister of an inmate at the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay. The marriage ended and the inmate was later released to Canada.
The families of the captives have been asked repeatedly why Boyle and Coleman, who was pregnant at the time, had been backpacking in such a dangerous region.
Boyle‘s family spent five years fighting to keep the case in the media spotlight in Canada, sharing the few “proof of life” videos or letters they received over the years.
In 2016, a video released by an affiliate of the Afghan Taliban and later posted to YouTube showed for the first time the two sons of Boyle and Coleman. In the video, Coleman begs for an end to their “Kafkaesque nightmare” and is critical of both the American and Canadian governments and the family’s Haqqani captors.

Boys aged from seven to 17, who escaped the blood-chilling captivity, are now living in camps with other displaced Iraqi residents, and are trying to get over the horrors they’ve been through.
“Even here I’m still very afraid. I can’t sleep properly because I see them in my dreams,” 17-year-old Ahmed Ameen Koro told AP.
Three years ago, Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) entered the area near the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar, killing tens of thousands of Yazidis and kidnapping thousands of women and girls.
“They chose and took the girls they liked. I remember the girls were crying, as well as the mothers. They were dragging these girls from the arms of their mothers,” Ahmed recalled.
Kurdish fighters advanced, freeing Sinjar, back in November 2015, and some 3,500 Yazidis were still held by IS at that time, according to figures given by Human Rights Watch. The Yazidis are viewed as heretics, so-called ‘infidels’, by IS. The minority’s beliefs are a combination of Islam, Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Judaism.
Ahmed’s family tried to flee, but had to split as their car couldn’t hold everyone: Ahmed, his 13-year-old brother Amin and four cousins went on foot, while his father drove everyone else to a nearby village.
“I was very scared. I’ve never seen such a thing. They were all very big bearded men, they looked like monsters. My parents weren’t with me and I was thinking about them, wondering what happened to them,” Ahmed told AP.
Another boy, now-10-year-old Akram showed AP two large scars on his stomach, sharing the story of his capture.
“They started to shoot at us. My mother fell and I was hit. These are the bullet marks. They separated me from my mother, my sister, my brother and my father.”
The boys never saw their loved ones again and were seized by IS soon afterwards.
Most of them were held in the Badoush Prison near Mosul for about a fortnight, being taught to pray as Muslims, then among those sent to an IS training camp in Tal Afar.
Their days were filled with early morning prayer and military training exercises, as well as Koran studies. They had to slide on their bellies through rows of burning tires, Akram said, and sometimes jumped off roofs. They also learnt to shoot Kalashnikovs and pistols, and watched guidelines on how to use a suicide belt or to behead a person.
“They were telling us if we were in a fight against the infidels … we had to blow ourselves up and kill them all. They were telling us ‘You are not Yazidis anymore. You are one of us,’” Ahmed said.
“They were saying they are our friends, but the kids were scared to death,” Akram added.
Akram had been held for over two years before being reunited with what remains of his family: an uncle and two siblings, while Ahmed spent nine months in captivity.
His escape was narrow, though.
“We were following the movement of the sun and continued walking at night. We were very thirsty because we ran out of water and we could not find the safe road. We ran out of everything. We were almost dying,” he told AP. After nine days of walking, they were rescued by Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
Both boys have mental health issues following their blood-chilling captivity: from nightmares, anxiety and bedwetting to extreme violence.
“They are not like other normal children. Their mental health is very bad,” Akram’s uncle said.
To battle the trauma, Ahmed is seeing a counsellor.
“He tries to restore my mind, to bring me back to how it was before Daesh [Arabic pejorative term for IS]. He tries to get the fear out of me.”
Both boys, however, are certain about what they would like to do in life: “Fight Daesh.”

What is your elevator pitch to folks in the industry describing your book?
On a literal note, bet against me striking up conversation with elevator mates. I am not so gregarious. But, when talking to people in more structured settings, I have sometimes found myself distinguishing fact from fiction as a way of getting at what’s different about Spoils. Yes, I was a soldier deployed to Baghdad during a particularly disastrous stretch of the war. Without a doubt, that experience is reflected in the novel. As a whole, though, it’s not thinly veiled autobiography. To start with, there’s a female protagonist. One of the other main characters is an Egyptian-born jihadist. I wanted the narrative viewpoints to be radically inclusive, yet also essential to what’s unique about these post-9/11 wars, compared to what’s come before.
What do you tell your relatives it’s about?
A young woman in the U.S. Army who’s taken captive during the early days of the Iraq War.
How long was this project marinating in a draft or in your head before it became a book deal?
Once I knew what the story would be, it took two and a half years to write. But, before that, there were another two and a half years spent figuring out what the story should be.
Name a canonical book you think is totally overrated.
The test of time is hard to game, so I am not one to bash the canon, however well or poorly it represents the circumstances of the vast majority of humans who have ever lived. But I will say that I’ve started Bleak House twice and failed to make it very far. The fault could be mine.
What’s a book you’ve read more than twice?
I don’t often re-read books, there are so many new ones I want to try, but I have read Lolita several times.
Is there a book or other piece of art that influenced your writing for this particular project?
There were many. One of the most useful fictional models was Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler. I remember reading it years ago and thinking that I wanted to write something like that: smart, literary, suspenseful, dark. It also features a character held prisoner, so there’s that in common.
What’s your favorite show to binge watch when you’re not writing?
Lately it’s been The Office. That show was prescient in a lot of ways. Michael Scott is certainly a Trumpian character, if the world were a screwball comedy. Remember the “Scott’s Tots” episode, when Michael has to renege on his delusional promise to send a classroom full of kids to college? Man, that’s so brilliantly cringe-worthy. Then there are other correspondences. Michael’s got a copy of Trump’s Think Like a Billionaire on his shelf. The first two real-life celebrities mentioned in the show are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. It’s a little spooky.
What’s the last movie you saw in theaters?
I think it was The Wolf of Wall Street, which came out in 2014. From that information you may be able to deduce the birth year of my first child.
Do you listen to music while you’re writing? If so, what kind?
Not usually. If I do, it’s instrumental. I find it hard to write while listening to any voices other than the ones in my head.
Who is your fashion icon?
Maybe Jack Kerouac before On the Road came out and he got so sloppy and sad.
Do you prefer a buzzing coffee shop or silent library?
For coffee, the coffee shop. For writing, I want coffee but fewer diversions.
Do you work best at a desk, bed or couch?
A desk.
Do you prefer morning writing or late-night writing?
I can do either, but late-night is no longer feasible. I find early afternoon is often productive.
Is your style more writing it all out in one big messy draft and then editing, or perfecting as you go (or something in between)?
Facing the blank page, I do my best to turn off the inner critic and just get it all down, fast, without worrying too much about perfection. It’s easy to get mired in sentence- and paragraph-level problems, when what I should be worrying about in a first draft are bigger issues of character and structure. My goal is a fast draft, though, inevitably, I stop along the way to edit and plan the next move. There is some amount of perfecting as I go. It really helps, momentum-wise, to know where I’m going.
How do you pay the bills, if not solely by your pen and your wit?
When I was working on Spoils, I made some money doing freelance educational writing, including drafting web-based remedial history lessons, standardized test items, economic textbook copy — basically, a bunch of sexy stuff like that. My wife also helps to pay the bills and has paid more than her share during the lean times.
What is your trick to finding time to write your book while also doing the above?
Luck. Other than that, there was no trick, just a certain amount of discipline and hunger. You have to put in the time, years of it, and face rejection without becoming permanently disheartened or spiteful. Relationships are critical in this way. Be with people who give you hope. Marry (or don’t marry) the right person. This is huge. If your spouse doesn’t wholeheartedly believe in your potential as a writer — or says they do, while secretly harboring major doubts — conflict and resentment will follow. Lifestyle issues are as important as writing habits because, for most people, the two things correlate. Organize your life in a way that facilitates your goals.
If you could buy a home anywhere in the world just to use for writing, where would it be?
A small ski town in Colorado. That would be as much for the scenery and good vibes as any belief that those things would help me write. They couldn’t hurt, though.
