Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in a penalty shoot-out to Derby with Pogba watching from the stands. Pogba was omitted from the squad due to rest according to Mourinho but his absence came after he was told he would never skipper the team again. Mourinho is understood to have made the brutal declaration in front of the rest of Pogba’s stunned team-mates before their defeat to Derby. The United boss is furious with Pogba’s attitude but he gave a different take after the dramatic shoot-out. “The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “But no fall-out. No problems at all. “The same person that decides Paul is not second captain anymore was exactly the same person that decides that Paul was the second captain, myself. “I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall-out at all, no problems at all, just one decision that I don’t have to explain.” Pogba’s position is now in serious doubt and there is a distinct possibility he could leave the club in January. Express Sport understands the World Cup winner is interested in a return to Juventus, from whom United signed him. While Barcelona have been credited with strong interest in snapping him up following the departure of Andres Iniesta. The latest development in the Pogba saga came before United kicked off against Frank Lampard’s Derby side at Old Trafford. The home side got off to a great start when Juan Mata finished off a fine move involving Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard. But Derby threatened throughout and got an equaliser in the second half when on-loan Liverpool winger Harry Wilson scored a brilliant free-kick from distance which completed deceived United goalkeeper Sergio Romero. The game then took a dramatic twist when United were reduced to 10 men after Romero handled the ball outside the box. And Derby went ahead when Jack Marriott nodded in from close range after United’s substitute keeper Lee Grant failed to deal with a shot from outside the box. But in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Marouane Fellaini headed home at the back post to take the game into penalties. Players from both teams emphatically scored the first 15 penalties but Phil Jones made it a night to forget for Mourinho when his effort was saved by Scott Carson. Lampard told Sky Sports: “I’m shell-shocked. What a performance. To go down early at Old Trafford and play as well as they did was superb. We had the personality to take penalties and play the way we did. I am a proud manager. “It was the easiest selection I have had, the players were superb against Brentford and they deserved the chance to play at Old Trafford. I wanted to bring a team who could really compete. I am so proud of them. “I am trying to build a group to be successful and nights like this are incredible. To go against world-class players and play that way, it’s right up there.” Hazard led Belgium to the World Cup semi-finals this summer, and is a £180million target for Real Madrid. But Chelsea are determined not to sell and feel that handing him the captaincy may be the key to persuading the 27-year-old to stay and sign the new contract he has been offered. Sarri, who has only been working with his squad for just over a week since taking over, has not yet made the final decision but Hazard, who is also Belgium’s skipper, is at the top of his list, ahead of Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta and midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Sarri also met with owner Roman Abramovich and director Marina Granovskaia here in Nice last night to discuss transfer targets. Chelsea have been told by Juventus they will have to pay £45million for centre-back Daniele Rugani. An opening offer of around £40m was rejected in discussions between Granovskaia and Juve sporting director Fabio Paratici in Italy on Thursday, but a deal could be concluded this weekend. Rugani’s agent David Torchia said: “Chelsea really like Rugani and have made an important offer. Juve are aware of the interest but for now they don’t want to sell the player. “But we know everything has a price. Rugani is a defender that would make Chelsea’s manager happy and it would be a good investment for them. Rugani wants to play more games.” Chelsea also want £58m-rated Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain, but want to get the Rugani deal sealed first – and to complicate matters AC Milan are also in for the Argentine. The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in Turin has led to Juve rethinking their options, with general manager Beppe Marotta saying: “He is still an important player for us, but now we obviously have greater competition [up front]. “He is a professional and we are evaluating his future together with the people who represent him.” Chelsea are also close to a deal for Brazil winger Bernard, 25, who is a free agent after leaving Shakhtar Donetsk, while Valencia are interested in Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi. Jordan Henderson was handed the club captaincy when Steven Gerrard retired but Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo say it’s now been proposed to Coutinho. It’s part of a last-ditch effort to keep him away from Barcelona – as well as a mega-bucks new deal. Mundo Deportivo claim Liverpool president Tom Werner has offered Coutinho a big pay-rise on his current contract but the midfielder has rejected it. Coutinho now hopes he has played his last game for Liverpool as he aims to force through a move to Barcelona this month. But the Spanish club will have to offer about £133million for the Reds to consider letting one of their top stars leave Anfield. It is now up to Barcelona to confirm the seriousness of their interest with a new bid. Coutinho is a doubt for Friday’s FA Cup third-round clash with Everton after sitting out their New Year’s Day win at Burnley with what manager Jurgen Klopp says is a thigh injury. Liverpool’s summer stance that Coutinho was not for sale at any price appears to have significantly softened in recent weeks and that is why the player believes he may get his move. Both the club and Klopp have stopped short of saying he will definitely be at Anfield when the window closes. That is in contrast to their approach in the summer when Fenway Sports Group, the club’s owners, made it clear he would not be sold at any price even after he handed in a transfer request. Although Liverpool have not named a price, it is understood that for negotiations to start it would have to be in excess of the £118m Barca bid that was rejected in the summer. Reports in Spain suggest they are ready to make a bid of about £133m but the Reds have yet to receive a new offer. Barcelona have not stopped some of their star players talking about Coutinho while their kit manufacturers Nike made a blunder by posting online adverts for shirts carrying his name. There now seems three ways this transfer will play out, with Coutinho being at Anfield beyond this summer the unlikeliest. The other two are that Barca secure an immediate transfer or that a deal is agreed for the player to move to Spain in the summer. 2013 30 Jan: Philippe Coutinho joins Liverpool from Inter Milan in an £8.5m deal. 2016 Summer: Barcelona first emerge as a serious suitor for Coutinho, although Paris Saint-Germain appear most likely to register their interest. 2017 6 Jan: Jurgen Klopp issues statement telling Barcelona to forget about signing Coutinho. “We never had any ideas or plans or any talks about him leaving,” Klopp said. 25 Jan: Coutinho signs a new five-year contract at Liverpool. The deal is meant to end Barcelona’s interest in the Brazilian, who will earn £8m a season. April: Liverpool insist Coutinho is not for sale at ANY price. 1 July: Summer transfer window opens. Bookies install Barcelona as favourites to land Coutinho. 4 Aug: Barcelona reluctantly sell Neymar to PSG in a £200m hostile transfer. 9 Aug: Liverpool reject Barcelona’s first bid of £90m for Coutinho. A second bid is also snubbed. 11 Aug: Coutinho hands in transfer request. 12 Aug: Coutinho makes himself unavailable for Liverpool’s season opener at Watford. He effectively goes on strike. 18 Aug: Liverpool reject a third bid of £114m for Coutinho. 23 Aug: Barcelona consider £138m bid for Coutinho but it is never made. 28 Aug: Despite still not playing for Liverpool this season, Coutinho is declared fit for Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers. 1 Sept: Coutinho scores for Brazil on transfer deadline day after realising there will be no late agreement between Liverpool and Barcelona. 13 Sept: Coutinho makes his first Liverpool appearance in the 2-2 Champions League draw with Sevilla. 19 Sept: Liverpool deny they requested a €200m transfer fee for Coutinho. 30 Dec: Nike accidentally publish a promotion for Barcelona players to buy a shirt with Coutinho’s name on the back. Neither Nike nor Barca comment on the leak. 31 Dec: Express Sport understands a £125m deal could be brokered between Liverpool and Barcelona – and that Coutinho may remain on Merseyside until the end of the season. 2018 1 Jan: January transfer window opens and Coutinho has an unexpected thigh injury, ruling himself out of the game at Burnley. 2 Jan: Reports that Coutinho has gone on strike surface. The England skipper, who named one change for the Boxing Day Test handing Tom Curran a debut in place of the injured Craig Overton, was labelled as “soft” by the Australian legend earlier this week. But Root brushed off the barbs on the eve of the Boxing Day showpiece saying that Ponting neither knows him well enough nor see how he operates in the England dressing room. “He’s entitled to his opinion, but he doesn’t spend any time in our dressing room. He doesn’t spend much time around the squad. I’m obviously going to disagree with that,” said Root. “If you ask any of the guys in the camp, any of the coaches and the support staff, they’d back me up as well. I don’t think I go about things as a ‘little boy’, that’s for sure. I have my own way of doing things. “It’s important that you don’t try to be something that you are not. I know there are occasions when you have to be strong in front of the whole group. I might not appear to do that out on the field but there are times when I do that and times I have done that.” Root admitted it was a “close call” between Curran and Mason Crane to make a debut in place of Overton who was ruled out of the fourth Test with a cracked rib. But he is confident the Surrey fast bowler will bring the same competitive edge to proceedings as Overton. “Tom offers a lot – he’s a real competitor. Similar work ethic, and the way he goes about things is very similar to Craig,” said the England skipper. “He’s always wanting to get in the contest and you know that he will give everything and he’s skilful. “He’s a feisty character, and he gets the ball to move around a bit. He’s always in the contest and that stands out. At no point will he hide away from any challenge. “If times become hard he will give it everything and it’s a great chance for him. Root added: “It wasn’t an easy decision. Had a little while thinking about it, and weighing up what was the best way to go on this surface and these conditions. But for the balance of the team, Tom was the best option.” Curran took five wickets and hit an unbeaten 77 in the tour match against Cricket Australia XI in Perth and it is his lower order contribution as much as his bowling which has got him the nod over Crane. But he will have his work cut out on a MCG wicket that most are predicting will offer little reward to bowlers and plenty to batsmen. Root said: “It looks slow, and dry towards the back end. The Shield games have been high scoring and batter friendly. The Tottenham striker’s 27th minute penalty was enough to see off Lithuania 1-0 and kept up his run of scoring after he previously netted as captain against Scotland, France and Slovenia. “Importantly, he’s scoring goals for us and he’s leading from the front,” said Southgate. “It’s a fantastic record. His finishing quality is top, as good as anyone I’ve played with or worked with. I’m never in doubt that, if he has a good opportunity, it’ll be on target and there’s a fair chance he scores. We’re fortunate to have him.” On a World Cup night where Scotland suffered the agony of missing out on the finals after drawing in Slovenia, Southgate added of Kane: “We need that leadership through the team. He’s certainly impressed me with everything he’s done. “I couldn’t be happier with the way he’s led, both in terms of by example on the pitch with his performances, but also with the group. I know everyone wants me to get a shift on, but, again, I want to give myself time. “What else would there be to write about for the next couple of months if I didn’t!” However, the three points to cement England’s place at the top of Group F could not disguise another below-par performance from the Three Lions, which again showed the size of the improvement needed if Southgate’s side are to make any sort of impact in Russia. “We haven’t scored the number of goals we would have liked to but we gave three full debuts and wanted to try something,” he said. “A bit more quality in the final third is what was missing. “They had a packed defence, we were a fraction off. It’s a completely different challenge against Brazil and Germany next month.” Harry Winks’ performance, making a surprise England debut on the back of just four Premier League starts, was one of the few positives of the evening and the Tottenham midfielder was unlucky not to score in the second half. “It’s been a dream week for me,” said Winks. “I was quite surprised when I got the call to step in, but obviously I’m happy to step in. To be called up into the seniors was fantastic – I nearly scored! “The keeper made a great save off my left foot, if that had gone in it would have been brilliant.” Walcott wore the captain’s armband as Arsenal thrashed West Ham 3-0 at the Emriates, getting on the scoresheet in the process. A number of Arsenal supporters were crucial of Wenger’s decision, but the Gunners manager has responded by praising Walcott’s commitment and focus. “He is a guy who cares and wants to do well,” Wenger said. “He has a huge level of focus. “I looked at his numbers the other day, he has played wide since the start of the season and he has played 20 games and scored 10 goals in the Premier League. For a wide player that’s quite positive. “He has improved his defensive commitment a lot compared to what it was before, he was sometimes a bit less focused on the teamwork. On that front he has improved tremendously. He shows on a daily basis a huge commitment. “He doesn’t compromise with what he thinks is important. When I have meetings with players he speaks his mind. He is a positive guy. “If you look at his career, he can respond to disappointment with good focus. He had a very bad injury [in 2014] and came back. “In 2006 he was in the World Cup and since he has not been. That is basically 11 years later and he has gone through very early high up and he is still there.” England’s Director of Cricket described the all-rounder as the “perfect No 2” but insisted he was “no shoo-in” to take the captaincy after Root. And he admitted that if Root were to be injured on the eve of an Ashes series they would not rule out looking at other options such as throwing an Ashes SOS to Alastair Cook. “Just as when Joe was made vice-captain, that doesn’t necessarily mean Ben is going to be a shoo-in to be England captain at some stage in the future,” he said. “And I don’t think it would be right for me to say that, in absolutely every circumstance, Ben would definitely take over from Joe.” Strauss admitted England would do their best to give Stokes as much leadership practise this year with a view to him establishing more compelling credentials for the top job. “It is not an easy thing to give people leadership experience when they’re in the England team 12 months of the year. So of course, we’ll look for opportunities to be able to do that. “But I think the way we’ve approached this is we’ve asked what we need in a vice captain and what will complement Joe as captain as well as possible.” Strauss also confirmed that Eoin Morgan is in no danger of being replaced by Root in white ball formats. “When you have a captain for all formats you [can] almost inevitably start sleep-walking from one format to the other – so I still think there’s great value in having those two captains,” said Strauss. “Eoin has done a fantastic job as one-day captain, and we’ve seen the change of method and philosophy in white-ball cricket – and how successful that’s been.” He added: “There’s certainly no reason why I’d want to upset that apple-cart at this stage.” ends Adelaide Crows AFL Women’s player Kellie Gibson’s weekly Facebook video chat. Taylor Walker set to be appointed for a third season as captain. Picture: Sarah Reed “EXCEPTIONAL’’ Taylor Walker will in days be confirmed as Adelaide captain for a third consecutive season. As three rival AFL clubs announced their new leadership groups for 2017, the Crows are close to taking a players’ vote that will see the popular Walker become the club’s equal-fifth longest-serving skipper. Forward Tom Lynch indicated “Tex’’ Walker’s confirmation as captain was virtually a fait accompli and would soon be rubber-stamped by the players. FORMER BLUE: MENZEL INVESTMENT ABOUT TO PAY OFF “As far as I am concerned Tex is the captain of this club,’’ said Lynch, describing his leadership as “exceptional’’. “He leads from the front, by example on and off the field and the presence and relationships he’s got with people at this club are second to none. “He cares about everyone, probably even more so than himself at times. I could sit here all day and run through his attributes. Taylor Walker looks to inspire his teammates. The key forward was a surprise captaincy selection — ahead of Patrick Dangerfield and Rory Sloane — by former coach Phil Walsh when Walsh took over the reins in 2015 but has become one of the most popular skippers in club history. Only club legend Mark Ricciuto (seven years), dual premiership captain Mark Bickley, inaugural skipper Chris McDermott and just-retired Nathan van Berlo (four) will have captained the club for longer once Walker’s leadership position is confirmed. New Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin also captained the club for three years. Since being named captain, Broken Hill product Walker has flourished, leading Adelaide to consecutive semi-final berths and booting 106 goals from 46 games. Picture: Greg HiggsSource:News Corp Australia Initially admitting to being “very hesitant to take the job’’, Walker says he now loves it and is continually improving his leadership. The Crows are expected to make just minor adjustments to their leadership brigade, which last season consisted of Walker and lieutenants Sloane, van Berlo, Scott Thompson, Daniel Talia, Sam Jacobs and Richard Douglas. Van Berlo has retired, with Lynch one of the contenders to replace him. The players will vote on the position with coach Don Pyke and the board then needing to rubber-stamp it.
