Casting movie stars can be a tricky proposition, especially if you’re making a big-budget film with unproven talent. In 1987, that’s exactly what Kevin Costner was. He’d appeared in three box-office bombs in 1985 (“American Flyers,” “Silverado,” and “Fandango”), and, prior to this, had been cut out of Lawrence Kasdan’s Baby Boomer smash “The Big Chill.” But after missing out on the more established Don Johnson (who was red hot at the time thanks to “Miami Vice”), Costner wound up being Brian De Palma’s Eliot Ness in the hit-hungry director’s big-screen rendition of “The Untouchables.” And while De Palma had a bit of movie star insurance in Sean Connery as the veteran beat cop Malone, David Mamet’s masterful screenplay screamed for a larger-than-life Al Capone.

De Palma only had eyes for Robert De Niro, and he had a history with the actor, having worked with him in the counterculture comedies “Greetings” and “Hi, Mom!” But the timing was lousy. De Niro was committed to an extraordinarily rare Broadway appearance in “Cuba & His Teddy Bear.” The Stella Adler-trained actor wanted to pack on 30 pounds to play the infamous gangster, and he wasn’t sure he’d have time to do so between the end of the play’s run and the start of principal photography. This left De Palma scrambling for options. Big-time names like Gene Hackman and even Marlon Brando were floated, but De Palma ultimately targeted Bob Hoskins. And he paid for it.

Pay To Not Play

Hoskins wasn’t a box office draw in the U.S., but his portrayal of London mobster Harold Shand in John Mackenzie’s “The Long Good Friday” transformed him into director catnip. After scoring an Academy Award nomination for “Mona Lisa,” everyone wanted a piece of him, including De Palma. Unfortunately, Hoskins wasn’t going to move the needle marketing-wise for “The Untouchables,” so when the director sent the actor the screenplay, he was incredibly candid about the tentativeness of the offer.

In a 1998 interview with Conan O’Brien, Hoskins explained that, after reading the script, he met with De Palma at a bar where the latter explained his conundrum. De Niro was the director’s first choice, but he was being squirrely. If he didn’t commit, would Hoskins be willing to take the role? “I said, ‘Yeah, if I’m free, yeah,'” said Hoskins. “I’m leaving myself open, you know?”

A while later, Hoskins read in the paper that De Niro had agreed to play Capone. That, it would seem, was that. Only it wasn’t. As he told O’Brien:

“Linda [Hoskins’ wife] and me are sitting out having breakfast one morning, and Linda’s opening the [mail]. She said, ‘Oh, what’s this?’ It was a check for $ 200,000. It said, ‘Thanks for your time. Love, Brian.’ I phoned him up, and I said, ‘Brian, listen, you got any films you don’t want me to be in, babe, I’m there for you any day!'”

The Greatest Performance We Never Saw

Paramount might’ve justifiably wanted more star power for a pricey film like “The Untouchables,” but Hoskins would’ve absolutely slayed in the role. If you’ve seen “The Long Good Friday,” you don’t need much of an imagination to see him musing over “enthusiasms” before bashing in an underling’s skull with a baseball bat. De Niro got the job done, but Hoskins would’ve brought a more visceral sense of danger to the character. When Costner’s Ness challenges Capone to a fight in the lobby of the Lexington Hotel, you would’ve legitimately feared for the G-man’s life. If you wanted a piece of Hoskins in gangster mode, you harbored a death wish.

Sadly, Hoskins and De Palma never hooked up before the actor’s death in 2014. The actor succumbed to pneumonia in 2014 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He was only 71. Had his health held out, he would’ve been a lion in his 70s. We were robbed of a fiery final act from one of the only actors you’d pay 200 grand out of respect for taking a meeting.

Tom Hardy is about to disappear into his next role. Filming is currently underway on Josh Trank‘s new movie Fonzo, in which Hardy plays the notorious gangster Al Capone, and Hardy has taken to Instagram to share a few photos of himself in character.

First up, here’s Hardy with his makeup team before they apply any prosthetics or makeup to him, just to provide a baseline of what we’re about to see.

Here’s the strangest of the batch, in which Hardy says he’s “channeling a kind of inner Stephen Segal.” It’s unclear if this is an actual costume he’ll be wearing in Fonzo, or if he’s just in character from the neck up.

A primal scream. This is more in line with what I expected from Hardy’s take on the character.

Take a look at those trenches on his cheek. Capone got those wounds after insulting a woman early in his career and getting sliced up by her brother, resulting in his nickname: “Scarface.”

And finally, a photo from director Josh Trank that gives us our best look yet at the character. You can read much more about this film’s plot right here.

I realize this is the most #basic complaint ever, but would it be too much to ask for Hardy to actually deliver lines of dialogue in an understandable manner this time? He has this habit of mumbling, wearing masks that obscure his mouth, or adopting bizarre voices that are often difficult to parse. It worked well in Dunkirk, for example, because that movie didn’t require you to actually understand much of his dialogue for it to work. But I imagine Fonzo will be a little more reliant on understanding what he’s saying, so fingers crossed his take on Capone doesn’t involve an unintelligible voice.

Fonzo doesn’t have a release date yet or a studio attached to distribute, which isn’t too surprising considering how poorly Trank’s 2015 Fantastic Four movie was received (and his behavior upon its release). I’m sure being fired from directing a Star Wars movie didn’t help, either. We’ll keep you posted on this film’s future when we learn more.

Undercover officers and ‘Al Capone’ tactics deployed as London crime epidemic stuns public https://briefnews.eu/undercover-officers-and-al-capone-tactics-deployed-as-london-crime-epidemic-stuns-public/ https://briefnews.eu/undercover-officers-and-al-capone-tactics-deployed-as-london-crime-epidemic-stuns-public/#respond Thu, 05 Apr 2018 15:08:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/undercover-officers-and-al-capone-tactics-deployed-as-london-crime-epidemic-stuns-public/ As London’s murder rate overtakes New York’s, with 50 deaths recorded in 2018 alone, undercover police officers and ‘Al Capone’ tactics are now being deployed to tackle the crime epidemic.

The officers, who will operate alongside highly visible uniformed ones, have been trained in behavioral science to spot any suspected criminal behavior. It comes after two deaths in Hackney, East London on Wednesday brought the total number of murders in the capital to 50.

As dozens were killed in three terrorist attacks in the city last year, and amid fears the Islamist threat is likely to worsen in the next couple of years, the officers have also been trained to prevent any terrorist from carrying out “hostile reconnaissance.”

“They are trained to detect signs displayed by people in stressful situations,” Superintendent Nick Aldworth, head of the Met’s Project Servator teams, told the Evening Standard.

“We know it works because of the positive outcomes from the operations conducted in the two pilot schemes. The idea is to deny terrorists the opportunity to carry out hostile reconnaissance.”

Meanwhile, Scotland Yard chief Cressida Dick has made her contribution to tackling London’s crime by pledging to adopt ‘Al Capone’ tactics. The tactics would be similar to those adopted against the 1930s American gangster Al Capone, who controlled Chicago’s criminal underworld and yet was only convicted of tax evasion when officers failed to connect him to the crimes he authorized.

She told the Standard the Violent Crime Task Force would work with local police to target violent individuals and known crime “hotspots.”

“We will put even more effort into bearing down on violent crime,” the Met commissioner said.

“You will see us being even more pro-active out on the streets. We will have a greater presence in the hotspots of violence and a focused effort, including intelligence-led stop-and-search and the use of specialists in covert tactics.

“We will be looking to target the people we know are the most dangerous and get the intelligence to our local officers which they can use in a fast-time way.”

Tom Hardy: FIRST LOOK as Al Capone in upcoming mobster movie Fonzo https://briefnews.eu/tom-hardy-first-look-as-al-capone-in-upcoming-mobster-movie-fonzo/ https://briefnews.eu/tom-hardy-first-look-as-al-capone-in-upcoming-mobster-movie-fonzo/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 01:23:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tom-hardy-first-look-as-al-capone-in-upcoming-mobster-movie-fonzo/

The 40-year-old star may have wrapped on the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off Venom, but he’s already started work on his next film.

Starring as ruthless mobster Capone, Hardy takes on the gangster’s later years after his release from prison in 1939.

Now the actor has shared a couple of black and white snaps on his Instagram, showing a gaunt and haggard incarnation of the famous mob boss.

Meanwhile one of the latest snaps shows the scars on his face, for which Capone was nicknamed Scarface.

Entitled Fonzo, the movie’s synopsis reads: “A ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Al ‘Fonzo’ Capone [Hardy] was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore.

“At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Capone’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.

When he arrived at Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary in May 1932, aged 33, he was officially diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhoea, as well as suffering from withdrawal symptoms from cocaine addiction, which had perforated his septum.

Over the years in prison his neurosyphilis eroded his mental faculties and he became confused and disoriented.

When he was released in 1939 the syphilis had caused partial paralysis and dementia. Examined by his physician and a Baltimore psychiatrist in 1946, he was found to have the mentality capacity of a 12-year-old child.

A recluse at his mansion in Palm Island, Florida, Capone had a stroke on January 21 1947 and then contracted pneumonia. Cardiac arrest the following day precipitated his death on January 25, aged just 48.

Tom Hardy NOT playing James Bond yet: Next film Fonzo is SHOCKING final years of Al Capone https://briefnews.eu/tom-hardy-not-playing-james-bond-yet-next-film-fonzo-is-shocking-final-years-of-al-capone/ https://briefnews.eu/tom-hardy-not-playing-james-bond-yet-next-film-fonzo-is-shocking-final-years-of-al-capone/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 23:41:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tom-hardy-not-playing-james-bond-yet-next-film-fonzo-is-shocking-final-years-of-al-capone/

Hardy never takes the easy route.

It is almost starting to seem that James Bond isn’t messed up enough for him. The Brit hard man is about to appear as the lead in a Marvel superhero movie, but will be playing Eddie Brock in Venom, who is taken over by an evil alien symbiote.

In the past he hasn’t just played gangsters, he played the most tormented of souls from the Kray twins to Charles Bronson.

He will complete his hat trick of gangster biopics by tackling the most legendary one of all – but by examining the tragic and terrible fall of Al Capone, not his heady days as Chicago’s king pin.

It is a story of imprisonment, humiliation, mental decline and chronic syphilis.

True to form, Hardy announced the news with a single black and white image on his Instagram page and an enigmatic tagline.

With his face wreathed in cigar smoke, Hardy’s post simply says: “Time for Al Cap.”

The actor has long harboured hopes of playing the crime lord and is about to start shooting the Josh Trank project, Fonzo, at last. The project was previously reported in Deadline as: “Fonzo, a new project written and to be directed by Josh Trank… which centres on Capone in the final days of his life.”

And they were truly terrible and pitiful final days, indeed.

Al Capone may be one of the most terrifying figures in modern history, but his fall was swift and absolute.

When he arrived at Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary in May 1932, aged 33, he was officially diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhoea, as well as suffering from withdrawal symptoms from cocaine addiction, which had perforated his septum.

Seen as weak, he was heavily bullied and threatened and needed protection. Capone was also stabbed in prison in 1936. Over the years in prison his neurosyphilis eroded his mental faculties and he became confused and disoriented. Thing would only get worse from there.

Cardiac arrest the following day precipitated his death on January 25, aged 48.

This truly could be the greatest role of Hardy’s career.

Peaky Blinders season 5 cast: Who will play Al Capone? https://briefnews.eu/peaky-blinders-season-5-cast-who-will-play-al-capone/ https://briefnews.eu/peaky-blinders-season-5-cast-who-will-play-al-capone/#respond Sun, 24 Dec 2017 21:35:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/peaky-blinders-season-5-cast-who-will-play-al-capone/

The fourth run of the BBC drama came to a typically dramatic close this week and saw Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) enlisting the Chicago mafia to help take out Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody).

Changretta – who was part of the New York mafia – had ventured to Birmingham to wipe out the Shelbys in a revenge mission.

However, Tommy managed to outsmart his mortal enemy by getting on board the Changrettas’ American rivals in the form of Al Capone.

Following the huge twist in the Peaky Blinders season four finale, fans were left speculating if Capone would be the chief antagonist in the new cycle.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SEASON OF PEAKY BLINDERS?

There were also viewer theories over who could take on the part of Capone.

Many suggested This Is England star Stephen Graham could be the actor for the job, having played the part in US hit drama Boardwalk Empire.

Taking to Twitter, one person posted: “Al Capone series 5! Surely has to be Stephen Graham! #PeakyBlinders.”

PEAKY BLINDERS SEASON 5 RELEASE DATE

A second wrote: “Was a cool reference to Al Capone in Peaky Blinders I reckon, imagine bringing Stephen graham in for the part like he did in Boardwalk Empire.”

“Magine Stephen Graham came back and played Al Capone in peaky blinders like his role in Boardwalk Empire [sic],” a third audience member said.

A fourth added: “I like the idea of Stephen Graham playing Al Capone in Peaky Blinders season 5, like he did in boardwalk empire. Needs to be a big name if Tom Hardy ain’t coming back.”

The casting theories come as the BBC confirmed that Peaky Blinders would be making a highly-anticipated return in 2019.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Peaky Blinders creator Steve Knight said: “It’s in my head, it’s not the best place for it to be.

“So I’m going to start writing that very soon and we will start shooting it next year. We will start shooting in the autumn.”

He added; “It will be the normal turn around, it would be [airing in] spring of 2019.”

Peaky Blinders season 5 will air on BBC One in 2019.
