Video game publisher Capcom is shutting down its Vancouver studio and around 158 employees will be let go. The company told Variety that operations were suspended Tuesday and a skeleton crew would remain on board until January in order to finalize the closure. “Capcom has been focused on increasing the efficiency and growth of its game development operations,” a spokesperson told Variety. “To support this objective, new R&D facilities and annual hiring have been underway at the Osaka headquarters. In consideration of this process, as a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan.”
Capcom Vancouver, known for its Dead Rising series, was hit with layoffs earlier this year as well. While the company confirmed that a number of titles were now cancelled, it didn’t say what plans it had for Dead Rising.
“We appreciate the hard work and contributions of all the studio team members in creating unforgettable gameplay experiences for the Dead Rising series and Puzzle Fighter,” Capcom said.

Resident Evil 2 Remake rumours have surfaced ahead of Capcom’s full reveal.
A recent post on 4Chan suggests Resident Evil 2 Remake will feature an over-the-shoulder camera system similar to Resident Evil 4.
And while there’s been no official confirmation from Capcom, the news hasn’t gone down well with everybody.
Some fans have messaged original Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya to express their disatisfaction with the potential gameplay alteration.
Kamiya threatened to block “brainless camera whiner idiots” and told other fans to message Capcom instead of contacting him.
The report claims that the campaign will take around 20 hours to finish, and feature expanded lore, cutscenes and story elements.
Likewise, the Police Station is said to have been expanded on with contain more keys and puzzles.
Fans can also expect new enemies, as well as appearances by monsters from other Resident Evil games.
On the downside, the alligator battle has reportedly been cut, although the sewer section has been expanded upon.
There’s also mention of potential DLC missions involving HUNK, Sherry and more.
Capcom recently dropped some big Resident Evil 2 Remake hints and teases on social media, leading fans to hope an announcement was imminent.
But the 20th anniversary of Resident Evil 2’s original release date came and went without any news on the remake.
Capcom’s R&D dev 1 team, who are developing the Resident Evil 2 Remake, had tweeted a few days before the RE2 anniversary to say they were in America.
The timing of the tweet, a few days before the anniversary, among other teases led fans to thinking a release date or trailer announcement was coming.
The tweet also featured an image where Resident Evil 7’s dummy finger item and a typewriter, used to save in the original Resident Evil games, were also pictured.
Clarifying the tweet, Capcom’s R&D dev 1 team posted: “Good morning! Didn’t mean to make everyone disappointed at all…, but the dummy finger pics were just saying hello from where we were with the favorite shots of that morning…btw, thank you all very much for all the comments!”
The Monster Hunter World PS4 beta will return later this week, as Capcom surprises fans in time for Christmas.
The second Monster Hunter World beta has been given a December 22 release date. It starts at 5pm UK time on Friday, and ends at the same time on December 26.
And unlike the original Monster Hunter World beta, fans won’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription in order to play.
“Due to popular demand, we’re bringing back the beta for a second round of server load testing!” reads a Capcom post. “All PlayStation 4 users with an internet connection to PlayStation Network can participate, so take this chance to dive into the new world of Monster Hunter!
“The Monster Hunter: World Beta will use worldwide multiplayer matchmaking to test server load for the upcoming release.”
Fans can visit the PlayStation Store to pre-load the Monster Hunter World beta right now. No additional download is required for anybody who still has the original saved to their PS4.
The only bad news is that there’s still no word on a PC or Xbox One multiplayer beta.
The Capcom trial features three different quests, which can be played in single and multiplayer.
Quests include ‘Great Devourer, Great Jagras’ in the Ancient Forest, ‘Wildspire Rampage’ in the Wildspire Waste and ‘The Ancient Forest Menace’, which also takes place in the Ancient Forest.
Players can choose from six different presets for male and female hunters, as well as six presets for Palico helpers.
It also supports voice and text chat, plus there’s a Training Area to test out the 14 different weapon types.
In the run up to release, Capcom has given fans some hints and tips to help them survive the hunt.
Players are encouraged to communicate using voice chat and text chat, but also by using set phrases, stickers and gestures.
Capcom also encourages players to take advantage of their surroundings by hiding in foliage, using Vitalities to replenish health and Flashflies to blind monsters.
Specialised tools will grant players temporary abilities, including a Ghillie Mantle that will camouflage you from monsters.

The game Marvel vs. Capcom — Infinite was released on on September 19th, and it appears as though Capcom is going all out to promote it. They’re hosting an eSports tournament called Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite — Battle of the Stones, and they’re inviting you to participate.
The tournament, which will be held in Anaheim on December 8th through 10th, will feature 16 players. Seven of the players will be former Evo Marvel vs. Capcom champions. Six players will be from the winners of the qualifying tournaments, while three additional players will come from online competition.
As the name of the tournament suggests, the six in-person qualifying tournaments, which will take place around the world, will involve playing Marvel vs. Capcom — Infinite and be centered on Marvel’s Infinity Stones. In addition for qualifying for the final tournament, winners of each of these competitions will receive an Infinity Stone that will give them unique powers that they can activate during the Battle of the Stones. It’s not clear what these powers are, though the release does say they “can be used outside of the typical ‘in-game” competition.” We reached out to Capcom for more information and were told that they’d only reveal specifics of each Infinity Stone at the stone’s respective tournament.
It’s certainly interesting that Capcom is promoting this new game with such a large eSports push. Clearly they believe in the game and want to do something spectacular to encourage people to pick it up, especially considering the Infinity Stones in the Collector’s Edition of the game were a bit of a letdown.

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
The colourful new brawler pits an array of Marvel super hero and villains against iconing Capcom characters from franchises like Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Bionic Commando and Mega Man.
But things have changed since the last game, most notably the switch from 3-v-3 to 2-v-2 battles, as well as the introduction of the Infinity Stones system.
Express Online spoke to Capcom producer Peter Rosas about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Infinity Stones, Nintendo Switch and more…
Why did you change from 3-v-3 to 2-v-2 battles for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite? How does this change the way you play?
At the heart of the versus series is the concept of partnership. In MvCI, the switch system allows for partnership to be expressed in ways we haven’t been able to before as players can switch between teammates at anytime, anywhere, doing anything. We played with this system with teams of three versus teams of two and saw that it was much more manageable from both a player and spectator perspective with teams of two.
The Infinity Stones create lots of strategic possibilities, but do they not also create lots of potential imbalances?
It’s much too early to say. The Infinity Stones are quite interesting as they allow a player to augment their characters’ weaknesses or double down on strengths. Although some tactics may seem strong early on, I’m sure after exploration, players will develop counter strategies utilising the stones, with this cycle continuing on for hopefully the life of the game!
How have fans reacted to the use of Infinity Stones and are some proving more popular than others?
Fans have reacted quite positively the Infinity Stones. They’re really excited that character strategies can change depending on the stone used, thereby allowing them to explore the strategy they favour. From what I’ve seen, a lot of players really enjoy the Reality and Space Stones as they’re pretty straightforward. Once players get some time with the game however, I believe the other stones will raise in popularity.
If one Infinity Stone does get picked more than all of the others, do you have a plan to make the less appealing stones more attractive?
We would have to investigate why that Infinity Stone is being selected. If it’s because players feel it complements most characters, then that’s player choice, which we really don’t want to dictate. If it’s because the Stone has a tactic tied to it that’s blatantly unfair, in which there’s no counter to, then that’s something we may have to adjust. At this moment in time however, I don’t see any Stones that stand out as head and heels above the others. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses.
Story modes have been really well used in recent fighting games. Did you draw inspiration from the story modes found in games like Mortal Kombat X?
For MvCI, we’ve definitely taken inspiration from Marvel comics and movies. As we all know, Marvel is amazing at storytelling and that’s something that we wanted to leverage in this game. This has resulted in an original, serious story that’s also quite fun and lighthearted, that tells the story as to why characters from the Marvel and Capcom universes are in the same place, at the same time.
There are now more Marvel fans than ever thanks to the Marvel cinematic universe. Does this change the way you approach development, add more pressure or affect which characters you use in the game?
As story is extremely important throughout not only the Marvel cinematic universe, but the Marvel universe itself, we wanted to make sure the story we told in Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite was on par with something fans might see in theatres or read in a comic book; with the addition of the story being interactive of course. This meant creating battles in the story which were unique to that mode as they drive home the dire situation the heroes are in.
This also influenced which characters were selected for the game as we wanted to make sure each character selected brought something to the story.
With the Nintendo Switch being such a fantastic console for local multiplayer, have you discussed bringing Marvel vs Capcom Infinite to Switch?
Sorry, we don’t have any news on Switch version. We’re focusing on the console releases right now.
With Marvel vs Capcom 3 returning to PlayStation and Xbox, is there any chance of Marvel vs Capcom 2 HD coming back as a digital download? (It was suddenly removed from PSN and Xbox Live in 2013.)
Sorry, we don’t have any news on any other MvC games outside of Infinite.
The Marvel vs Capcom Infinite September 19 release date is almost here on PS4 and Xbox One.
And while it’s too early for a review, it’s clear that the success of the game hinges on how fighting fans take to the Infinity Stones system.
Returning from the original Marvel Super Heroes arcade brawler, Infinity Stones grant players unique moves and abilities, such as the power to revive a fallen teammate, or trap opponents in a force cage and restrict their movement.
Not only do Infinity Stones add a layer of strategy not found in other brawlers, but the whole thing ties in nicely to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the imminent showdown with Thanos.
It’s also a great way of papering over some of your character’s weaknesses.
It’s rare that I choose Hulk, for example, because despite being a bonafide powerhouse, he’s also slower than a line at the post office.
Fortunately, that’s where the Infinity Stones come in.
Equip Hulk with the Time stone and you can cross the screen in an instant and unleash one of his devastating combos.
On the flipside, characters like Arthur from Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins don’t have a problem with speed, but they’re not the most powerful fighters on the roster.
Give Arthur the Power Stone and you’ll be able to knock enemies back with a powerful attack and eventually be able to raise his attack power.
It’s good that so far, my experiments with Marvel vs Capcom Infinite’s new Infinity Stones system has led to some thrilling battles against friends – some of whom have barely touched a fighting game since Street Fighter 2.
But as with any fighting game, the biggest concern right now is balance, and whether or not Infinity Stones will tip the scales too far in the favour of the pros.
Will one Infinity Stone prove more popular than the rest? Is there one Infinity Stone that’s more effective than the others?
I guess we’ll find out all these answers and more when Marvel vs Capcom Infinite makes its Xbox One and PS4 debut on September 19.

Like comic books, fighting games are ripe for the crossover treatment. Nintendo has done it with good success in the Super Smash Bros. series, bringing characters from disparate franchises like Street Fighter and Fire Emblem together to brawl on the Wii U and 3DS. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe mixed up heroes from video games and comic books into its arenas, as well. Really, any announcement of new playable characters in upcoming fighting games are sure to please fans across the board.
Now we’re seeing a couple of big-name reveals at Comic-Con for two upcoming games, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Frank West of Dead Rising fame is headed to the former, along with Spider-Man, Mike Haggar (from Final Fight) and Nemesis (from Resident Evil). Dragon Ball Fighter Z fans will be able to play both Piccolo and Krillin, longstanding characters in the anime universe.
Capcom released a trailer showing off the latest additions to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, with cameos from the new folks as well as other characters, like Gamora, that were revealed at E3 this year. Frank West appears as his thirty-something photojournalist self from the earlier Dead Rising titles, while Haggar, Spider-Man and Nemesis each bring their familiar forms to a new arena, which appears to take place in giant-headed M.O.D.O.K.’s lair. The fighter is slated to appear on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC this coming September 19th.
Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball FighterZ has two new characters of its own. Both characters originally appeared in the anime as antagonists for series star, Goku, but each became a trusted ally. Each has his own fighting style, according to the company, with stylish and devastating moves to master. There should be more exciting reveals for the title in the near future, with the game set to launch in early 2018 on Microsoft’s and Sony’s consoles as well as PC.
