LEWIS CAPALDI feared he was “dying”, thinking he had a degenerative disease, but his health diagnosis was much more “eye-opening” than that – he’s got Tourette’s syndrome.
]]>
Nothing can keep this Doctor away from comforting his fans.
Peter Capaldi had an emotional exit from Doctor Who in this year’s Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time,” which saw the Twelfth Doctor regenerating into the Thirteenth Doctor played by Jodie Whittaker. It’s all a part of the history of Doctor Who, which has been replacing its stars since the long-running BBC science-fiction show first started airing in the 1960s. But for many young fans who began watching the series with Capaldi at its helm, it’s a fresh new loss.
Everyone has their favorite Doctor (mine is Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, a perfect blend of childish and conniving) but 9-year-old David McGilloway’s favorite was Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor. According to David’s father Brian, he knew the end for the Twelfth Doctor was coming — Capaldi had announced his exit back in January 2017 — but was “dreading” it, unused to the cycle of loss that comes with this brilliant, stupid, tragic show.
But like one Doctor said, “The universe is big. It’s vast and complicated and… ridiculous and sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles.” (You can probably tell that my bias is towards Eleven.) David McGilloway received a miracle in the form of a letter penned by none other than Capaldi himself, reassuring the young fan over the Doctor’s regeneration.
#PeterCapaldi is my 9 year old son’s fav #DoctorWho and he was dreading his regeneration. And then he got this letter with some words of comfort from the Doctor himself among his Santa presents. Such a kind man. pic.twitter.com/Dki37Wt6Er
— Brian McGilloway (@BrianMcGilloway) December 27, 2017
Dated for November 23, 1963 — the day after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination — Capaldi wrote a letter from the shared perspective of himself and the Doctor that he plays. The letter in full is below:
Dear David,
I hope you are having a very Merry Xmas. Xmas is always good fun. Well not always. Not every single second. Regenerating is not completely good fun. And it usually happens about Xmas-time. But you know what? Even though it can be a little bit icky (like really bad flu) it always, always turned out to be good for Dr. Who. The new Doctor always becomes your favorite and the one that goes…well, he never really goes, he is always there, somewhere in time and space, and if you think about him hard enough, you’ll see him, and he’ll see you.
It’s like the Doctor says, “Everything ends, and it’s always sad. But everything begins again, and that’s always happy. Be happy.”
So, have a brilliant Xmas, a happy New Year and a wonderful life — I’m sure you will.
All the best,
Peter Capaldi.
Doctor ?
It’s the sweetest way that Capaldi can send off his character and reassure his young fans, who are probably dealing with a pop culture loss for the first time in their lives. Doctor Who has long been a family staple for British families, and those young fans are at the heart of its worldwide impact. Sometimes the legions of older fans can forget that, but it’s wonderful that Capaldi hasn’t.

The 59-year-old actor will depart from the show in Twice Upon A Time later this month, when incoming incarnation Jodie Whittaker, 35, will take the reins.
However, before he left, it seemed that Peter wanted to pay tributes to fans, in the sweetest way possible.
Although he couldn’t attend last night’s premiere of the Christmas special, the Scottish actor left press, including express.co.uk, a special goodbye message.
It read: “I’m really sorry I can’t be with you tonight. I’d like to thank all my friends on Doctor Who for sharing their good humour, talent and light with me the past four years.
“Particularly, Steven Moffat, who has brought so much to Doctor Who, even though it might not be realised today, but will be seen clearly in the future.
“I’d like to thank everyone who loves the show for sharing it with me, and sharing the boundless spirit it embodies.
“I wish Jodie and the new TARDIS team all the best for the future and the past, and everything in between. I look forward to watching them journey to new and wonderful places.
“For me, it’s been an amazing trip. I went to the end of time, I met fantastical creatures – and I blew them up. But now it’s over and time I was off, Peter Capaldi,” he concluded.
What’s more, it seems that emotions are running high all through the cast in light of such a tear-jerking episode.
Pearl Mackie, who plays Bill Potts in the franchise said she was “a state” when reading through the final script.
Doctor Who’s Christmas special airs on Christmas Day at 5.30pm on BBC One.
The Doctor Who Christmas special is always a big-budget TV event and for the past two actors who have played the time-traveling alien, it has been when they have bid goodbye to the long-running TV show.
Peter Capaldi will uphold that tradition and say goodbye to the role of the Doctor in this year’s Christmas special, Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time. But as he faces a future ahead of Doctor Who, he will run smack dab into the past. This is a time travel show after all, and you can’t have big event TV without inviting David Bradley to play the beloved crotchety First Doctor. And let me tell you, he does not dig those sonic sunglasses.
“Come back alive.”
“Be there when I do.”
It’s a foreboding exchange between Bill Potts (Mackie) and the Doctor (Capaldi), as he faces his latest and most trying adventure yet — dealing with his past self. This year’s Christmas special finds the 12th and 1st Doctors stranded in the Arctic, on the cusp of their impending regenerations into different bodies. This isn’t the first time that past and future incarnations of the Doctor have met — in fact, it’s actually become commonplace, with the many anniversary episodes of the 54-year-old show teaming up the different regenerations of the Doctor.
This will be Bradley’s second appearance as the First Doctor within the canon of the show, having appeared briefly in this special’s lead-up episode “The Doctor Falls,” after playing the First Doctor’s original actor William Hartnell in the BBC docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time. But not to worry 1st Doctor fans — Bradley’s got the befuddled crotchety act down pat, knocking down the 12th Doctor after he proudly shows off his sonic sunglasses indoors.
But delightful exchanges between two premiere British actors like Capaldi and Bradley aside, this episode is inherently bittersweet, as it marks the final episode for Capaldi’s 12th Doctor. I was admittedly not a huge fan of Capaldi’s run, but that was more the fault of showrunner Steven Moffat, whose convoluted writing and flat characterization of female characters brought down a sci-fi series that I once adored. I’m a little saddened that I won’t get to witness Capaldi at his full potential now that Moffat has left and been replaced by Chris Chibnall, but I can’t be more excited for his replacement Jodie Whittaker, whose 13th Doctor will be the first female Doctor ever.
Here’s the synopsis for Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time:
The magical final chapter of the Twelfth Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) journey sees the Time Lord team up with his former self, the first ever Doctor (David Bradley – Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) and a returning Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), for one last adventure. Two Doctors stranded in an Arctic snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. Enchanted glass people, stealing their victims from frozen time. And a World War One captain destined to die on the battlefield, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story. An uplifting new tale about the power of hope in humanity’s darkest hours, Twice Upon A Time marks the end of an era. But as the Doctor must face his past to decide his future, his journey is only just beginning.
Twice Upon a Time will premiere on Sunday, December 25, 2017 at 9/8c on BBC America.

The 59-year-old actor was spotted in Cardiff saying goodbye to fans after shooting his last sequences as the 12th Doctor.
It appeared to be an emotional day as the Scottish actor, who was seen still in costume meeting with fans near the Doctor Who studios in Wales.
Many people took to social media to share photos they’d taken with the star and express their adulation with one person saying: “It was his idea to come out and see us, and together with Moff, Gatiss, Briggs and Minchin, we gave him a farewell to remember.”
A second person wrote on Twitter: “BEST. COINCIDENCE. EVER. #PeterCapaldi is a true gift from god. He organised everyone to come out and see us and bought us cakes.”
“Peter Capaldi just came out with all the crew and camera men, I even hugged him my favourite!” added a third.
It comes as Peter revealed that the forthcoming Christmas special will be a “fanboy’s dream” featuring the first Doctor (David Bradley).
Speaking to TV & Satellite, he said: “It’s a tour de force. It’s a fanboy’s dream, it’s also a beautiful and joyous script.”
He went on to say: “The one thing I have to say is, it’s Christmas Day, we’re gonna keep it funny, and we’re gonna keep it lively, as well as sad.
“If we cry, [the audience] won’t. We want them to cry. So Doctor Who will laugh bravely into that good night.”
Doctor Who fans are set to get a sneak peek at the festival episode in a couple of weeks when the BBC will drop a clip at San Diego Comic-Con during a panel.
The panel is set to feature stars Peter Capaldi who plays the 12th Time Lord, Pearl Mackie who stars as companion Bill Potts, Matt Lucas as alien Nardole and Michelle Gomez who portrays the female incarnation of the Master known as Missy.
Along with the actors outgoing Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and fellow writer Mark Gatiss will be appearing at the Q&A session.
Doctor Who will return to BBC One on Christmas Day.
The Victoria actress is believed to be rejoining the Doctor as his former companion Clara Oswald to give him a “proper send-off”.
“Jenna Coleman has agreed to film something new as Clara,” an insider revealed.
“It’s become a tradition now for the companions to reappear as the Doctor regenerates and Jenna isn’t letting the side down.”
Previous regenerations have seen the likes of Billie Piper return as Rose Tyler when David Tenant left in 2009 while Karen Gillan reprised her role as Amy Pond for Matt Smith’s departure in 2013.
At the end of the episode, the Master (played by John Simm), could be heard asking the Doctor: “Will the future be all girl?”
“We can only hope,” he promptly replied, which sent fans into a frenzy as they believed his comment to be confirmation that the new Time Lord would be a woman.
One star tipped to take over is Fleabag actress and write Phoebe Waller-Bridge while Michaela Cole is also rumoured to be in the running.
Doctor Who will return on Christmas Day.
Peter Capaldi is all but done with his Doctor, but not before he gave us one of the saddest, most moral endings to a series.
With writer Steven Moffat almost done with the Time Lord himself, the two combined to dispose of the mad Master (possibly for good) and most of the nasty Cybermen who were intent on conquering on us all.
You’d think they would give up. But thank God for our very own British brand of superhero.
Not truth, justice and the American way. Instead, “I do it because it is right,” said the Doctor, as he stayed behind on the solar farm (good to see they’ve caught on) to selflessly blow up every monster in sight.
With a body count to rival Rambo, our man on the multi-storey spaceship saved his companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) from a life in an unfashionable tin onesie.
She would later reunite with her girlfriend who lives in a puddle.
And we complain. This however, was the only glimmer of hope as a fitfully regenerating Capaldi refused to go quietly into the night.
Instead, he emerged into a Whovian heaven where old doctors go to moan about TV bosses.
Writer Moffat then rattled through a roll call of companions who had escorted him through his tenure – Billy Piper et al – and that was it.
Until David Bradley emerged from the mists playing the First Doctor, immortalised by William Hartnell in 1963.
Why’s he there? He’s probably been waiting for a car home after his own wrap party in 1966.
A new Doctor for Christmas? Start auditioning quick, BBC.
The 59-year-old actor will exit the show during this year’s Christmas day special, opening the door to a new replacement.
Capaldi currently stars alongside new companion Bill (played by Pearl Mackie), but it is not yet known whether the actress will depart at the same time or continue with the new Doctor.
Speaking about his regeneration, Capaldi said: “I can’t go into the details. I know what happens, but I don’t know how it happens. Certainly it’s not straightforward. It’s more complicated than recent ones.
“That’s one of the appeals of being in the show – it has death at the heart of it. He’s the only hero on TV who dies again and again.”
Capaldi admitted that he always felt that his character was “sad”, mainly due to his significant age, and changes the way he plays certain elements to make them appear more human or alien.
He continued to Radio Times: “The Doctor is deeply sad – I think he always has been. When you’re wise and you’ve lived a very long time, that’s how you’d be.
“Although you have to be careful with very human emotions and the Doctor because he’s an alien. It’s more straightforward to play the human elements, but then it might as well be a cop show.
“I love this show, but I’ve never done anything where you turn up every day for ten months. I want to always be giving it my best and I don’t think if I stayed on I’d be able to do that.
“I can’t think of another way to say, “This could be the end of civilisation as we know it.” With episodic television of any genre, the audience wants the same thing all the time – but the instinct that leads the actor is not about being in a groove.”
It comes as showrunner Steven Moffat revealed that Missy (Michelle Gomez) would not be returning for this year’s Christmas special episode.
The full interview can be found in this week’s Radio Times, which is available now.
Doctor Who continues this Saturday on BBC One at 6.45pm.
The 58-year-old actor announced in January that he was stepping down from the role, explaining that the upcoming series would be his last.
In an interview with Empire, Peter said he was torn about the decision but felt he needed to leave to keep the programme fresh.
“That’s one of the reasons I’m leaving,” he said. “Because with this volume of work, it’s hard to constantly be searching for new ways of doing things.
“But Doctor Who is weird because I love it so much. Part of me enjoys doing the same thing, while part of me wants different challenges.”
The Scottish star explained that playing one role for a sustained period of time was unusual for him and he knew as soon as he started he would have to leave at some point.
“The terrible thing is, the moment you get the job, you know you’re going to have to leave it,” Peter continued. “That might just be part of my doomy, melancholic nature, but as soon as I became the Doctor I immediately propelled my mind to this spot.
“But that’s fine. I’ve never really done anything for three or four years – it’s not my style.”
Kris Marshall, who recently quit Death in Paradise, is the current favourite to take over the Tardis.
However, there have been calls for a female Doctor, with many backing Tilda Swinton and Lara Pulver for the lead role.
Doctor Who returns to BBC One on April 15.
The current Time Lord announced that he will be stepping down from the TARDIS last month, a decision that could have been very different.
But, according to headwriter Steven, Peter was unsure on whether to stay a bit longer.
He told Broadcast Magazine: “It took Peter a long time to make up his mind. Chris tried to persuade him to stay.
“I knew it was a possibility that he’d leave because Doctors tend to do three years. I thought that he might want to opt out, rather than go through the trauma of a change in command and maybe leaving a year later anyway,” he continued.
He confirmed: “But I think he came close to staying.”
Steven also discussed his own departure from the show which will coincide with the lead stepping down.
“I intended to do three years, so I doubled that. For various reasons, during my third series I wasn’t as happy,” the 55-year-old revealed.
He added: “It was the only time doing Doctor Who where i felt it was slipping away from me a bit.”
The writer, also behind Sherlock, revealed he felt he lost “control” of the show around the time the previous Doctor, Matt Smith, announced his departure from the sci-fi drama.
“I didn’t want to leave like that, so I tried to persuade Matt to do another year, but he was determined to go,” Steven explained.
He added: “And then having cast a new Doctor, I had to stay – and I wanted to because I was thoroughly enjoying working with Peter.”
Steven and Peter’s final season of Doctor Who will air April 15 on BBC One.
