The American and South Korean militaries have conducted live fire exercises, launching surface-to-surface tactical missiles into neutral waters as a show of force against the latest North Korean ballistic test that coincided with American Independence Day.
“Eighth US Army and Republic of Korea (ROK) military personnel conducted a combined event exercising assets countering North Korea’s destabilizing and unlawful actions on July 4,” United States Forces in Korea said in a statement.
“This exercise utilized the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and the Republic of Korea Hyunmoo Missile II, which fired missiles into territorial waters of South Korea along the East Coast,” the military statement added.
US forces also warned that in the case of any further provocation from the North, the missile systems can be “rapidly deployed and engaged” to provide “deep strike precision capability” under all weather conditions.

Pyongyang has claimed that its medium-range ballistic missile test carried out on Sunday under the supervision of Kim Jong-un has confirmed the “tactical specifications and technical characteristics” of the rocket which North Korea says is capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
North Korea has succeeded in launching its new “Hwaseong-12” surface-to-surface missile on May 14, Pyongyang’s official Central News Agency announced.
“The test fire was conducted with maximum angle of the projectile’s elevation in consideration of the safety of neighboring countries, with the aim of confirming the tactical specifications and technical characteristics of the new long-range strategic ballistic rockets capable of loading powerful heavy-weight nuclear warheads,” KCNA announced.
The country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, led the launch of a new type of rocket, the report noted.
“The launched rocket flew up to the maximum peak altitude of 2,111.5 kilometers along the scheduled flight orbit and precisely hit the target waters 787-kilometers away,” the communications ministry’s announcement read.
South Korea’s military also said earlier that the N. Korean projectile flew around 700 km before falling into the Sea of Japan. However, despite the North claiming it to be a long-range missile, the US military’s Pacific Command, which tracked and analyzed the launch earlier, said it was unlikely that the the fired projectile was an intercontinental missile.
“The type of missile is being assessed and the flight was not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile,” Pacific Command’s spokesman said.

Tokyo has long voiced concerns about becoming a possible target for Pyongyang, which conducted two nuclear tests in 2016. Three ballistic missiles test-fired by the North Korean military landed off the Japanese coast earlier in March.
The recent escalation of tensions prompted the security panel of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to draw up an “urgent proposal,” Former Defense Minister, Itsunori Onodera, said as cited by the Times of Japan.
“North Korea’s provocative acts are reaching levels our country can simply no longer overlook,” the panel said, according to AFP. The group said the government should swiftly look into options to allow striking enemy bases, including putting cruise missiles on service.
Japanese authorities were also advised to “immediately consider” the introduction the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and shore-based Aegis missile defense systems.
“We can’t waste a moment to strengthen our ballistic missile defense,” the panel said.

Aimed at deterring missile launches from North Korea, THAAD has recently been deployed in South Korea. China has raised concerns that the system puts its national security at risk. Moscow also said that the deployment does nothing to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula.
The security panel emphasized they weren’t talking about developing first strike capabilities, saying the cruise missiles should only be unleashed should North Korea ever launch an attack on Japanese territory. This way, the initiative falls in line with the Japanese pacifist doctrine which only allows the country to use military force in self-defense.
The proposal will be submitted to Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, as early as Thursday, the panel said.

Abe has been pushing for revising the constitution — saying the principal law, introduced under pressure from occupying US forces after Japan’s defeat in World War II, is outdated and not in line with modern threats.
The PM is also a strong backer of boosting military ties with the US, with 47,000 American troops already stationed in Japan to guarantee the country’s security as part of an alliance.

In 2015, Abe’s government has passed a controversial new law that allows the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to take part in foreign military ops to protect their American ally. Critics criticized the move as unconstitutional, warning that it may drag the country into conflicts abroad which have nothing to do with Japanese security.
The 2017 iMac is arguably one of Apple’s most anticipated products. After being neglected for years, the iMac line is pretty much in dire need of an update. Fortunately, if Apple CEO Tim Cook’s words are any indication, it appears that it would only be a matter of time before the Cupertino-based tech giant focuses on its homegrown, iconic, all-in-one desktop computer once more.
Apple rolled out the last iMac update way back in 2015 when the tech giant introduced a Retina screen to smaller desktop models while equipping its larger units with Skylake chips. Since then, the iMac appeared to have been largely forgotten, with the all-in-one computer seemingly following the path of the now-discontinued 11-inch MacBook Air. According to a MacWorld report, however, Apple CEO Tim Cook personally stated that the future of the tech firm’s desktop computer is not as grim as what many would like to believe.
“The desktop is very strategic for us. It’s unique compared to the notebook because you can pack a lot more performance on a desktop — the largest screens, the most memory and storage, a greater variety of I/O, and fastest performance. So there are many different reasons why desktops are really important, and in some cases critical, to people.
“The current generation iMac is the best desktop we have ever made and its beautiful Retina 5K display is the best desktop display in the world. Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we’re committed to desktops. If there’s any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that.”

Thus, while the Apple CEO only mentioned the iMac once, it appears that the all-in-one would not be retired anytime soon. With this in mind, several encouraging rumors have emerged about the device, such as a possible release date sometime this 2017. After all, with the MacBook Pro line being given a refresh for 2016, it only seems fitting that Apple’s iconic all-in-one desktop computer would be following soon after.
Rumors of the iMac 2017’s release date point to the device seeing an early to late 2017 release date. Speculations about the device’s reveal are conflicting, with some stating that the iMac 2017 would be launched in March and others stating that the all-in-one desktop would be revealed sometime in October instead. Regardless of the actual date, it appears that after all the wait, the 2017 iMac would definitively be coming, according to a PC Advisor report.
Rumors about the device’s internals have been very encouraging so far, with recent speculations stating that the iMac 2017 would be equipped with 4.2GHz Intel Core i7-7700 Kaby Lake chip. What is particularly interesting is that the Core i7-7700 chip rumored for the 2017 iMac is capable of overclocking to 4.8GHz. Such specs equate to some serious processing power, and numerous Apple fans have remarked that the rumored chip would actually be enough to provide a suitable VR experience.

One thing that iMacs have struggled against lately is raw power and graphical capability. While Apple’s current all-in-one desktops are beautifully designed, they simply do not have enough muscle to compete with powerhouses from Windows. With the 2017 iMac, however, this appears to be changing, with rumors stating that the machine’s Core i7-7700 chip would be paired with AMD Polaris 10 chips, which would, in turn, drastically improve the performance of the all-in-one desktop.
The boost to a powerful Core i7 Kaby Lake processor and AMD Polaris graphics appear to be targeting a very specific niche – virtual reality. VR might not be taking off as fast as its innovators have hoped, but the technology is slowly being integrated very well into the market. Apple has always been a tech firm that blazes the trail for new technological innovations, but unfortunately, regarding virtual reality, the Cupertino-based tech giant is severely lagging behind. With this in mind, it would appear that the iMac 2017 might be Apple’s response to the gauntlet thrown by Apple’s most intense competitors in the all-in-one desktop computing industry, as well as the emerging VR market itself.

The Surface Pro 5 is one of Microsoft’s most anticipated devices. After the successful run of the Surface Pro 4, fans of the powerhouse hybrid device have been eager to see what the tech giant has in store for the iconic line’s future. After the release of the Surface Studio and the revamped Surface Book i7 last October, all eyes have been focused on the Surface Pro 5, a device that is yet to be officially announced, yet has already taken the computing world by storm.
The release date for the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 has been in question since its predecessor hit the market more than a year ago. Initial speculations pointed to an October, 2016, release, but the date ultimately proved to be set for the Surface Studio and the Surface Book i7 instead. With the powerful hybrid device not making an appearance last October, recent rumors have emerged speculating that the most likely date for the Surface Pro 5’s release would be March, 2017, during the MWC in Barcelona.
A March, 2017, release date for the Surface Pro 5 actually makes a lot of sense for the tech giant, considering that a significant update to Windows 10, codenamed Redstone 2, is also set to be rolled out early this year as well. While the release date for Redstone 2 is widely speculated to be set for April, 2017, a March reveal for the Surface Pro 5 would still be strategic enough for Microsoft. After all, if speculations are to be believed, the Surface Pro 5 would be armed to the teeth in terms of features and specs.

Rumors about the Surface Pro 5 have been around for some time, with speculations about the device emerging since its predecessor, the excellent and highly-acclaimed Surface Pro 4, was unveiled to the market. While Microsoft is yet to reveal any official details about the upcoming flagship hybrid, numerous leaks and reports from the tech giant’s partner companies have begun to shed more light on the Surface Pro 5. So far, what has been teased about the device has been very encouraging.
Recent speculations about the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 point to the device being equipped with Intel’s latest generation of processors, the Kaby Lake family, coupled with around 16GB of RAM. A Tech Radar report stated that the Surface Pro 5 would most certainly have the most up-to-date processors in the market; thus, it would not be surprising if the highly-anticipated device launches with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ variant.
One of the most notable rumors about the Surface Pro 5 is the introduction of an ARM-based variant, which opens up the possibility of an LTE-capable device. Mobile connectivity has always been one of the Surface Pro line’s biggest weaknesses. Thus, if Microsoft could equip the Surface Pro 5 with mobile connectivity, it would make the device even more formidable than it already is.

If recent leaks are to be believed, the manufacturing of the Surface Pro 5 would begin soon. According to a DigiTimes report, Microsoft has recently reached an agreement with Pegatron, the firm that manufactures the Surface Studio, regarding the production of the Surface Pro 5. The report further stated that the upcoming hybrid would feature a 4K display and a wirelessly charging stylus, just as rumors have previously predicted.
Perhaps the most encouraging rumor about the Surface Pro 5 is an improvement in one of the hybrid device’s most basic features: the battery. Previous Surface devices, such as the SP4, have been lauded for their specs and power, but critics and users alike have pointed out that the devices are usually lacking in the battery department. With the Surface Pro 5, it appears that Microsoft would finally be ready to give its users a battery that would make the hybrid competitive enough to challenge the kings of endurance such as the MacBook Air and the iPad Pro.
The Surface Pro 5 would most certainly be the best hybrid device Microsoft has created to date. While the competition in the hybrid market has gotten a lot more intense, the Surface line has, over the years, become the golden standard for 2-in-1 computing devices. If rumors prove true and the Surface Pro 5 does end up with most of its rumored specs, it would not be a surprise at all if the hybrid would become the best in its class this year.
