Stephen Colbert barely had a chance to react to Nancy Pelosi’s big announcement on Tuesday before his studio audience in New York erupted in cheers and applause.

Late Show attendees sprung to their feet after the House Speaker announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, who is accused of trying to extort Ukraine into a political probe of Joe Biden and his son.

“Finally, a check on the president,” Colbert said. “Up until now, we’ve only had a check from the president to a porn star.”

Colbert opined that this investigation “makes Watergate look like Nixon tried to pass an expired coupon at the Kroger.” What makes it even worse, he said, is that Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s leader took place just one day after special counsel Robert Mueller testified to Congress about Russian interference. “So the idea that a foreign power like Russia shouldn’t interfere in our elections is the only thing everyone agreed on — everyone but Trump,” Colbert said, “because he just moved one country over.”

Afterwards, Colbert informed his audience that the whistleblower who raised concerns about Trump’s alleged extortion attempt is poised to speak before the House Intelligence Committee as early as this week. “It’s historic, high-stakes testimony in Congress from someone with intimate knowledge of Trump’s criminal wrongdoing,” he said. “We haven’t had one of those in days.”

After 17 years of war, top US commander in Afghanistan admits Taliban cannot be defeated https://briefnews.eu/after-17-years-of-war-top-us-commander-in-afghanistan-admits-taliban-cannot-be-defeated/ https://briefnews.eu/after-17-years-of-war-top-us-commander-in-afghanistan-admits-taliban-cannot-be-defeated/#respond Fri, 02 Nov 2018 10:57:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/after-17-years-of-war-top-us-commander-in-afghanistan-admits-taliban-cannot-be-defeated/

The Afghanistan war cannot be won militarily and peace will only be achieved through a political resolution with the Taliban, the newly-appointed American general in charge of US and NATO operations has conceded.

In his first interview since taking command of NATO’s Resolute Support mission in September, Gen. Austin Scott Miller provided NBC News with a surprisingly candid assessment of the seemingly never-ending conflict, which began with the US invasion of Afghanistan in October, 2001.

“This is not going to be won militarily. This is going to a political solution,” Miller said.

He mused that the Taliban is also tired of fighting and may be interested in starting to “work through the political piece” of the 17-year-old war.

But it’s not clear if the Taliban is open to negotiations. Last month, a top Taliban commander told RT, in a rare interview, that the group’s leaders had no desire to negotiate with the Americans.

Described for years as a stalemate, the conflict has been tipping in the Taliban’s favor in recent months. Even by US military estimates, the Afghan government controls or influences just over half of the country’s 407 districts – a record low since the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, began tracking district control in November 2015.

To make matters worse, casualties among Afghan government forces have skyrocketed in recent months. Afghan security forces suffered 1,000 fatalities in August and September, according to the Pentagon.

Miller’s desire for a political settlement was echoed earlier by the State Department, which said in August that the US was doing everything it could to facilitate peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

The new US commander has experienced the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan first-hand. In October, Miller survived a Taliban attack in Kandahar, which left a prominent Afghan warlord and local intelligence chief dead.

Dr Pixie McKenna: 5 things I cannot live without https://briefnews.eu/dr-pixie-mckenna-5-things-i-cannot-live-without/ https://briefnews.eu/dr-pixie-mckenna-5-things-i-cannot-live-without/#respond Mon, 01 Oct 2018 02:56:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dr-pixie-mckenna-5-things-i-cannot-live-without/

1 Mitch

Mitch is my husband John’s nickname and I can honestly say I would be at a loss without him.

We’ve been married for eight years and anyone who thinks that opposites might attract but are rarely happy together clearly hasn’t met the pair of us.

Mitch is ex-army and he is incredibly tidy and organised. He is also reliably calm and in control – always the sensible, competent one who quietly gets things done.

He comes from a very orderly family and his relatives actually remember his birthday.

In contrast, I grew up in a crazy, noisy home with four older brothers and I am pretty chaotic and a born extrovert. Unlike Mitch, I always feel very comfortable taking centre stage.

2 Baltimore

I am talking about the small fishing village in West Cork, close to where I grew up, rather than the American city.

I have been visiting Baltimore for more than 40 years as we often spent our holidays there when I was a child.

I still go there every summer and Mitch and Darcy love it now just as much as I do. It’s one of those places where you can almost step back in time.

There is hardly any wifi, which is wonderful, and when we’re there we spend our whole time walking on the beach, sailing or eating.

3 Barry’s Tea

Being Irish, I am completely addicted to Barry’s Tea as, to me, it is the absolute taste of home.

I’ve never had a cup of coffee in my life as I can’t stand the smell of it but I probably get through more than 20 cups of tea a day.

It is, I’m afraid, an absolute addiction.

To be honest I don’t really care how it comes but it’s the only tea I drink.

I really don’t get the whole herbal and Earl Grey thing.

4 Family rings

Not long ago I managed to lose my wedding ring.

I accidentally chucked it into the sea when I was on the beach skimming pebbles into the water.

It was very upsetting at the time but now ironically, and rather sadly, I have two wedding rings.

I lost my beloved mother a few months ago and as her only daughter, I not only inherited her wedding ring but also that of my maternal grandmother, whom I was close to.

Now, whenever I glance down at my hands and see those familiar gold bands, I feel sad but also comforted to still have those two wonderfully strong women with me in some way.

5 A bike

I live in Cambridge, where people believe two wheels are better than four and everyone seems to cycle everywhere.

I have always loved being active.

My bike isn’t just a means of transport – although I do use it to get to the station when I’m commuting to my clinic in London – it is also something I really enjoy.

Cycling is something I do for fun and when I’m older and have more time and less responsibility, I dream of taking off on a leisurely bike tour around Europe.

There would of course be lots of hard-core pedalling but that would be punctuated by the odd shopping trip and lots of long lunches and relaxed visits to museums and restaurants.

I love the idea of enjoying the ride at my own pace.

Car finance WARNING – Millions UK drivers ‘trapped’ in lease deals they cannot afford https://briefnews.eu/car-finance-warning-millions-uk-drivers-trapped-in-lease-deals-they-cannot-afford/ https://briefnews.eu/car-finance-warning-millions-uk-drivers-trapped-in-lease-deals-they-cannot-afford/#respond Thu, 16 Aug 2018 23:54:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/car-finance-warning-millions-uk-drivers-trapped-in-lease-deals-they-cannot-afford/

Car finance has drastically grown in popularity over the past few years with it offering an attractive alternative to full ownership over a vehicle.

There are an estimated 8.7 million UK drivers with a car finance agreement, but a large proportion of these feel ‘trapped’, claims a new report.

According to new research by Drover, around 28 per cent of drivers with finance deals can’t afford the final payments to keep the car at the end of the contract.

As a result of this drivers are feeling pressured into taking out another finance deal because they don’t want to feel like they lost money they’ve out into a new car.

The survey of 1,500 drivers who are currently in a finance deal found that almost 65 per cent said they could not afford the final payment on their deal and therefore felt obliged to take out another Personal Contract Purchase.

In addition to this, three in five (60 per cent) said they could not afford to terminate their contract early.

Of the motorists trapped, almost two thirds (61 per cent) believe they are getting a bad deal and 54 per cent believed that the next PCP contrast they agree too is worse than the one prior.

The research also revealed that 28 per cent of motorists surveyed had at least three rounds of finance with the same dealer and higher APR rates than their previous deal.

Some drivers claimed to be frustrated by PCP deals saying they weren’t aware of what they were signing up for.

This is evidently costing drivers as almost half (46 per cent) claimed that they did not shop around for a good deal while 36 per cent are not aware of what the rate of interest is.

Drover CEO and founder Felix Leuschner say that motorists should consider other avenues when searching for a new car deal.

“Buying a car is daunting prospect for many drivers – not only is there so much choice, but car finance deals are hugely confusing,” he said.

“We are aiming to help drivers by providing a more flexible way to run a car without the commitment of car finance.”

Flight rules: You cannot fly in a plane if you've recently undergone this simple treatment https://briefnews.eu/flight-rules-you-cannot-fly-in-a-plane-if-youve-recently-undergone-this-simple-treatment/ https://briefnews.eu/flight-rules-you-cannot-fly-in-a-plane-if-youve-recently-undergone-this-simple-treatment/#respond Sun, 12 Aug 2018 05:16:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flight-rules-you-cannot-fly-in-a-plane-if-youve-recently-undergone-this-simple-treatment/

Flights need to be as safe as possible for everyone on board so certain airlines are very strict with certain health conditions.

This means that you might not always be allowed to fly and make be required to present medical paperwork

On Virgin Atlantic you won’t be able to fly if you’ve had a general anaesthetic or dental treatment within 48 hours prior to your flight.

“Certain medical conditions can be affected by flying, and may require medical clearance, which is written confirmation from your doctor that you are well enough to fly,” the Virgin website states.

The reason behind this rule is because of the air pressure in the cabin which could result in a passenger whose had recent surgery experiencing a lot of pain.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesman told Express.co.uk: “Following our medical guidelines which are outlined by the International Air Transport Association’s guidance, if a customer is having a simple dental procedure then they can travel two days after having this procedure.

“If a passenger is having a tooth extraction or having any stitches then they can travel three days after having this procedure.

“The reason for this is due to the reduced air pressure within the cabin. Any enclosed air will expand by at least 30 per cent.

“If for example, a customer had had simple dental work (such as a filling) there may be trapped air in the cavity which has not had enough time to settle itself, meaning that it would be very painful when flying.”

However, the airline does deal with every passenger on a  case by case basis with the Virgin’s medical team.

“If the passenger is looking to travel earlier than the set guideline then we may require medical paperwork from their doctor to confirm that they are fit to fly which can be reviewed by our medical team,” the spokesman said.

According to the airline’s Conditions of Carriage, if you are asked to provide evidence of your fitness to fly and a flight is diverted as a direct result of your health – and Virgin have reasons to doubt the veracity of your evidence – they will “not be responsible for any fines, detention, medical or repatriation costs incurred by you and [they] reserve the right to seek reimbursement of any costs we incur as a result.”

However, Virgin Atlantic is not alone in its strict rules for who they allow on board.

American Airlines lists its reasons for why it may refuse to transport passengers is it Conditions of Carriage.

One of these is if you smell really bad. In their words: “If you have an offensive odour not caused by a disability or illness.”

In 2010 a passenger was reportedly kicked off an Air Canada Jazz flight after fellow fliers complained about an odour, reported ABC News.

They will also not allow you on if you are barefoot.

American Airlines can also refuse entry to passengers who “are clothed in a manner that will cause discomfort or offence to other passengers.”

The airline is not alone in this. Last year a group of ladies on a hen-do were kicked off a Jet 2 flight because their T-shirts said “B*****s On Tour”.

A Jet2 spokesman told The Sun: “At check-in for our East Midlands to Majorca flight, a group of passengers were reminded of our Onboard Together policy and told that they would not be permitted to fly with us whilst wearing t-shirts which displayed offensive language.”

Passport photo rules: The four things you CANNOT do in an official UK passport picture https://briefnews.eu/passport-photo-rules-the-four-things-you-cannot-do-in-an-official-uk-passport-picture/ https://briefnews.eu/passport-photo-rules-the-four-things-you-cannot-do-in-an-official-uk-passport-picture/#respond Sat, 28 Jul 2018 08:57:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/passport-photo-rules-the-four-things-you-cannot-do-in-an-official-uk-passport-picture/

UK passport pictures need to be fully researched before being taken as there are a stringent set of guidelines applicants must follow.

There might be a heatwave in the UK this month, but going on holiday is a pastime thousands of Britons enjoy every year.

Applying for a passport isn’t cheap, nor is it particularly easy, but there are ways of doing things properly and rules you should follow to avoid having your application returned.

You need either printed or digital photos if you’re applying online – applicants will be told as they start the application what type of photo they need.

There is one hard-and-fast rule, however, that applies to both: Your photo must have been taken in the last month.

Gov.uk reports Britons must get a new photo when they get a new passport, even if your appearance has not changed.

If you don’t follow the regulations with both the picture and the application, it could lead to your application being delayed.

Your photo must:

  • be taken against a plain, light-coloured background
  • contain no other objects or people
  • not have any shadows on your face or behind you
  • be taken in the last month
  • Do not wear sunglasses or tinted glasses. If you wear glasses that you cannot take off, your eyes must be visible without any glare or reflections.

There are a list of things you absolutely must do when having a passport picture taken too.

In your photo you must:

  • be facing forward and looking straight at the camera
  • have a plain expression and your mouth closed
  • have your eyes open and visible
  • not have hair covering your eyes

not wear anything on your head (unless it’s for religious or medical reasons)

The most powerful passports in the world for 2018 have been revealed, with the UK charting at a respectable fourth place in the global ranking.

The UK was pipped to the top spot in The Henley Passport Index by Japan and Singapore, who made joint first.

Germany came in second, while third place was shared by seven countries – Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Norway and South Korea.

Sharing fourth place with the United Kingdom, passports from Austria, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, and the USA crept in to the top five.

Explaining how they compiled the data, the company wrote: “The Henley Passport Index is a ranking of all the passports of the world according to the number of countries their holders can travel to visa-free.

“The ranking is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the world’s largest and most comprehensive database of travel information, and is enhanced by extensive in-house research.”

Prof. Kate Coddington, Assistant Professor of Geography at Durham University, commented on Japan taking the top spot, and said: “South Asia and Southeast Asia remain stable, while North Asia and Oceania see significant growth.”

One aspect of passports that have changed in modern times is the ability for individuals to transcend the restrictions imposed on them by ‘buying their way in’ to countries they would normally find difficult to enter, by committing to invest and start businesses there.

Millennials cannot cope with money https://briefnews.eu/millennials-cannot-cope-with-money/ https://briefnews.eu/millennials-cannot-cope-with-money/#respond Sun, 15 Jul 2018 04:40:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/millennials-cannot-cope-with-money/

Keep Me Posted (KMP) is campaigning against many businesses and banks, as well as the Government, that charge for paper statements, instead encouraging their customers to go online.

KMP argues that this not only adversely discriminates against the elderly and disabled, but that young people are becoming overly reliant on the internet and digital documents.

In a study conducted by KMP they asked two groups to read the same information on paper or on screen.

They found that 82 per cent of those who read hard copies answered questions correctly compared to 32 per cent who looked at screens. Judith Donovan, chairwoman of KMP, said:

“This issue is so important for young people in debt. They are digital natives, so for them it doesn’t cross their minds to do anything other than go online, but they aren’t aware the extent their comprehension of financial affairs is reduced by staying online.

“Everybody prints something off if it is complicated, or difficult to understand. It isn’t an age thing, it is because we comprehend information better on paper. Young people don’t understand that. They don’t get much financial education at school anyway.”

She added: “The other thing hurting young people is the housing market. When you go to rent a flat the landlord will ask for bills or bank statements and they have to be original copies.

“There is a huge amount of ignorance. [Young people] don’t understand repayment deadlines or compound interest and it is very worrying.”

Research shows 40 per cent of UK adults say the removal of paper statements could affect their finances, while 5.2 million UK households do not have internet access.

Some 125 charities and organisations, including Mind and Age UK, back the campaign while some banks, utility companies and councils have changed policies because of KMP.

Seven European Union countries and Canada have passed legislation making it illegal to charge for paper bills.

Ms Donovan said: “The Government is trying to drive an online only policy to save money. The more people you drive online the more call the call centre. Money isn’t saved, just moved around.”

No time for tweeting

AMERICA’S unemployment statistics attract close attention, even from presidents. Early on June 1st President Donald Trump tweeted that he was looking forward to the latest figure (3.8%), released that morning. China’s unemployment numbers, by contrast, attract mostly ridicule. They have barely budged since 2011 despite the upheavals of the period.

Many China-watchers therefore hoped that a new measure of unemployment, dating from 2016 but published monthly since April, would be more revealing. Unlike the older statistic, which counts only those registered as jobless at local labour offices, the new measure draws on a survey of the labour force, collected by trained enumerators and beamed directly to Beijing beyond the grasp of local officials. It now covers 120,000 households across urban China (on top of a longer-running survey of 31 cities), providing, in theory, a representative snapshot of the biggest unemployed population in the world.

‘We cannot declare Russia, the country and its people, to be an enemy’ – German president https://briefnews.eu/we-cannot-declare-russia-the-country-and-its-people-to-be-an-enemy-german-president/ https://briefnews.eu/we-cannot-declare-russia-the-country-and-its-people-to-be-an-enemy-german-president/#respond Sun, 15 Apr 2018 23:49:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-cannot-declare-russia-the-country-and-its-people-to-be-an-enemy-german-president/ German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for ending the demonization of Russia and its people on Sunday. He added that Germany should do more to help de-escalate tensions, given his country’s unique history with Russia.

Steinmeier warned that the US-led airstrikes in Syria in the early hours of Saturday morning raised the risk of direct confrontation between US and Russian forces operating in the Syrian theater. Relations between the US and Russia have hit a post-Cold War low after the attack, which followed the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria, last week. The Syrian regime has denied allegations that it gassed its own people, particularly in an area where, and a time when, its forces were on the brink of total victory.

“We are at the next step of escalation in the Russian-American relationship,” Steinmeier told Bild. “Regardless of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, we cannot declare Russia as a whole, the country and its people, to be an enemy,” he said. “Our history speaks against it, and there is too much at stake.”

Even before the alleged Douma gas attack, Russo-Western relations were tense in the aftermath of the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, England, on March 4. The UK prime minister declared it was “highly likely” that Russia was behind the poisoning, citing a lack of “plausible alternative explanation” and the purported Soviet origin of the chemical agent used. For its part, Moscow has vehemently denied any involvement in the poisoning and decried the total lack of transparency in the case. Russian Ambassador to the UK Alexander Yakovenko said it was possible that London was destroying evidence that could exonerate Russia.

Steinmeier described the Skripal row as “a very serious incident.”

“The galloping alienation between Russia and the West must also concern us, with consequences that will go far beyond this case. There is practically no basis of trust any more.”

Speaking about the Syrian conflict overall, Steinmeier said it is too important for petty point-scoring politics to prevent a real solution, adding that estrangement between the West and Russia is, “the real challenge for responsible politics.”

“Of course, you can’t do it without the regional neighbors in the end, but everything begins with the US and Russia,” he was quoted as saying. “Putin and Trump owe it to the world to take the first step.”

However, Steinmeier’s comments come in stark contrast to the sentiments expressed by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas Sunday. Mass criticized Russia for what he “has to assume” was its involvement in a December cyber attack against his own Foreign Ministry. Both Steinmeier and Maas are Social Democrats, but Maas has adopted a far tougher stance on Russia than any of his predecessors.

“We had an attack on the Foreign Ministry where we have to assume that it stemmed from Russia,” he told the German broadcaster ZDF. “We can’t just wish all that away … And I think it’s not only reasonable but necessary to point out that we do not view those as constructive contributions.”

Mass also decried Moscow’s alleged role in the Skripal case, its apparent failure to implement a lasting ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, its supposed meddling in Western elections and its ongoing support for the Syrian government.

“What I said is just what it is. I just described the reality. We have Ukraine. The peace process there goes no further. We have had that Skripals [case]. We saw Russian organizations influencing elections in the West. One cannot just pretend that nothing of these happened. Unfortunately, this is reality. I regard it not just as malignant, I believe it is necessary to point out that we do not see it as constructive behavior.”

“It is time, I think, to point out that we expect constructive contributions from the Russian side, including on the Syrian conflict. And also that they don’t always simply protect (Syrian President Bashar) al-Assad,” Maas concluded.
