Five more celebrities made their Masked Dancer debuts on Wednesday, but it was Ice Cube who got the cold shoulder from the studio audience.

Despite giving the choreography his all (and rocking all of that bedazzled denim), Ice Cube was eliminated and unmasked at the end of Episode 2, revealing himself to be TV host Bill Nye. That leaves Sloth, Zebra, Moth and Cotton Candy still in the running alongside Group A’s Tulip, Hammerhead, Exotic Bird and Cricket.

Ahead of the next round of performances on Jan. 13 (Fox, 8/7c), we’re taking a closer look at the latest clues for Group B, which you can peruse in the attached gallery (along with our current guesses for the celebs under those get-ups).

How does a hot dog costume figure into Zebra’s real-life career? What’s the connection between Moth and the president? Might Sloth be a Glee alum? And who’s resilient enough to take a terrifying tumble from an aerial hoop, then brush herself off the way Cotton Candy did?

Scroll through the attached gallery (or click here for direct access) to see our latest theories, which we’ll be updating after each new Masked Dancer episode airs, then hit the comments with your own analysis!

How Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo and [Spoiler] Teamed Up to Deliver That ‘Fan Candy’ in Season Premiere https://briefnews.eu/how-greys-anatomys-ellen-pompeo-and-spoiler-teamed-up-to-deliver-that-fan-candy-in-season-premiere/ https://briefnews.eu/how-greys-anatomys-ellen-pompeo-and-spoiler-teamed-up-to-deliver-that-fan-candy-in-season-premiere/#respond Fri, 13 Nov 2020 13:48:12 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/how-greys-anatomys-ellen-pompeo-and-spoiler-teamed-up-to-deliver-that-fan-candy-in-season-premiere/ The following contains a major spoiler from the Season 17 premiere of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.

As ABC Promo Guy told us late on Thursday night (and in the video above), no, Grey’s Anatomy fans, you are not McDreaming. That was very much so Patrick Dempsey in the final sequence of the two-hour Season 17 premiere.

As noted in TVLine’s in-depth premiere recap, Meredith (played by Ellen Pompeo) was found collapsed on the hospital parking lot, amid the stress and grueling hours of the pandemic. As colleagues rushed to her side, we saw Meredith, clad in white, on the gauzy beach she was at in the cold open. And then a second figure appeared down shore — that of her late husband Derek, played by Dempsey.

Explaining the genesis of afterlife-like reunion idea, showrunner Krista Vernoff told our sister site Deadline, “From a writer’s perspective… it was my job to find a way — once we determined that we were doing the pandemic — to also bring joy, and escape, and fan candy, and all the things that at Grey’s Anatomy we give people…. And so, I was walking on the beach one day, and I was like, ‘What if there’s a Meredith dream motif?’”

Vernoff ran the idea by Pompeo, asking which dearly departed character she’d like Mer to see — and Pompeo suggested no less than Derek. Pompeo in turn pitched Dempsey, who, due to his foundation that helps cancer patients, was very receptive to the idea of bringing joy during these uncertain times.

“There’s just so much darkness, and we knew that coming together would be a little ray of light,: Pompeo told Deadline. “[W]e had the same idea, at the core, to want to help people and bring a smile to people’s faces. So, [Patrick] loved the idea, and we were just so excited, and we had a ball filming it.”

Said Dempsey, “I’ve been tracking what Grey’s had been doing with giving masks, and making sure that people had the right equipment, and it came from that place [of] ‘OK, what can we do to make people feel better, to give some comfort in this time of uncertainty? And that’s how it began. And it was really a wonderful experience to go back.”

Greys Anatomy Patrick Dempsey

Read Vernoff’s official statement on the surprise encore, which continues next week. below:

“The most important task we had this season was to honor the reality of this global pandemic and the impact it’s having —particularly on healthcare workers. Along with that we had to come up with creative ways to allow our show to still be fun and romantic and provide some escapism. Enter Patrick Dempsey. The beach motif – which will continue beyond the premiere – provided a way for us to live outside the pandemic even for a little while here and there. And Derek’s return provided pure joy for us, for Meredith, and for the fans. Season 17 has been a Herculean effort by our cast, our crew, our writers, and our partners at Disney and ABC – and we are proud of it. But our effort is nothing compared to the work of our Frontline healthcare workers to whom this season is dedicated. We hope our show inspires you to wear your masks to protect them and each other. As Derek Shepherd would say, ‘It’s a beautiful day to save lives.’”

A careful rewatch of the third season episode, Vegas With Some Radish, has exposed a tiny detail about the singer/con artist that may have been missed the first time round.

Reddit user chuldana took to the Lucifer subreddit and posted: “On my re-watch, I just noticed something awesome. In the course of investigating the death of his ex – Lucifer’s usually unusual attention to detail misses something pretty big.”

Candy is first introduced as a sensual singer who rips off Lucifer in season two’s episode Candy Morningstar.

To even the score, Lucifer convinces Candy to pose as his wife in order to investigate his mother, Goddess, who was possessing the body of Charlotte Richards (Tricia Helfer) at the time.

Her Arab Twist on Iconic Western Art Is … Candy Wrappers https://briefnews.eu/her-arab-twist-on-iconic-western-art-is-candy-wrappers/ https://briefnews.eu/her-arab-twist-on-iconic-western-art-is-candy-wrappers/#respond Wed, 29 Aug 2018 22:41:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/her-arab-twist-on-iconic-western-art-is-candy-wrappers/ On first glance, Ghada al-Rabea comes off as orthodox and austere. The 40-year-old Saudi artist dresses from head to toe in an abaya, the traditional Muslim cloak, and masks her entire face save the area around her kohl-lined eyes with a niqab. But one look at her paintings, crafted meticulously with candy and chocolate wrappers, and there is no question as to how playful and amusing she actually is.

“Using chocolate wrappers came to me while I was sipping tea and nibbling on chocolate in my living room,” al-Rabea says. “I knew it was the perfect choice of medium for me, as it reflects my childlike spirit and my humorous approach to art.”

Born and raised in Medina, Saudi Arabia, a country where the art scene is starting to flourish thanks to the Ministry of Culture and patronage initiatives, Al-Rabea always knew she wanted to be an artist. Her mother was the first to encourage that passion, and her husband would later challenge her to carve out her own niche, supporting her morally and financially while she did so.

Al-Rabea, a graduate of Taibah University with a degree in home economics and the fine arts, has exhibited in local art shows, most recently at Athr Gallery in Jeddah. Her solo exhibition Sidi Shahin, showcased 17 artworks and attracted more than 2,000 visitors of varying ages and genders. “It is rare to see a show that can speak to people from all generations,” says Afia bin Taleb, Athr’s exhibition manager and artist liaison. “The show was covered extensively by local and regional media outlets, in both English and Arabic.” According to Basma al-Sulaiman, founder of the virtual museum Basmoca and a Saudi art patron, “Ghada’s style is unique. It could be identified as contemporary pop art, and she stands alone in that field.”

Al-Rabea’s creative license goes beyond upcycling candy wrappers as a novel art medium. The mother of four who recently became a grandmother is acclaimed for applying a Saudi lens to iconic Western art.

Can you picture Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa sporting a veil? How about Grant Wood’s American Gothic couple donning traditional Saudi headdresses? Al-Rabea evokes the Renaissance and post-impressionism with a Saudi slant, swapping the French bourgeoisie with the Arab kingdom’s modern-day middle class in Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. “I have always imagined what these iconic pieces would look like if the artists came from the [Arab] region,” al-Rabea says. Her intention was never to offend, but simply to “put a smile on people’s faces.”

Could her depictions of human figures be construed as defying Islam or unflattering to Saudi culture? If there has been criticism, al-Rabea says she hasn’t heard any. “This is a limited point of view; art has nothing to do with religion,” al-Sulaiman argues. On the contrary, al-Rabea’s artwork inspires onlookers to be “happy and joyful,” al-Sulaiman says, tugging at their nostalgia through the use of familiar candy wrappers.

Al-Rabea’s collages of familiar settings in a present-day Saudi context combined with the incorporation of the discarded and forgotten — whether material or cultural — have amassed an international following with collectors as far west as the Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston, Maine.

Long dominated by arch-conservative Wahhabism, Saudi Arabia has taken steps toward modernity and increased recognition of women in the past year under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. But al-Rabea admits that as a female artist, particularly a conservative one, her ability to meet people, curators and art collectors is impeded in a country where women were only recently allowed to drive.

While bin Taleb, the exhibition manager, believes that male and female artists in Saudi Arabia face identical challenges, she “cannot deny that the most powerful positions are dominated by males,” even though women outnumber men in the field. Art patron al-Sulaiman, meanwhile, claims “judgment is always on the quality of work, not on the gender of the artist.” Further, she insists that women can occupy both administrative and technical roles in art institutes, and that the Ministry of Culture supports all artists equally.

The candy wrapper artist urges the West not to judge her part of the world based on shallow media coverage that provides only empty calories. “The reality here is very different from what it is perceived to be. Women everywhere face obstacles,” al-Rabea says. While those obstacles might vary from continent to continent, “we should all embrace and accept each other’s differences … and they should not be generalized.” Bin Taleb argues that “women are gaining more power and more recognition, and it is all because of consciousness and feminist movements.”

As the Arab-Muslim world shifts, Saudi women are scrambling to define their roles in society. Just ask al-Rabea, whose favorite among her creations is her self-portrait fashioned from Lindt wrappers. “As a niqabi, it was not clear how I could create a self-portrait,” she says, alluding to the fact that she is almost completely veiled. “However, I took it upon myself as a challenge to show others that there aren’t any restrictions but the ones you plant in your head.”

5 Questions for Ghada al-Rabea

  1. What’s the last book you read? The Holy Quran.
  2. What do you worry about? Leaving this world without learning all the things I want to learn.
  3. What’s the one thing you cannot live without? Two things: the Quran and my family.
  4. Who’s your hero? My husband and kids.
  5. What’s one item on your bucket list? To present one of my works at the Louvre Museum. Because I’m proudly veiled, I can’t go to France, so I hope to place a part of me there.

Theme Park Bits: Pixar Pier Edition – New Pixar Pier Glimpses, Interactive Pixar Ball, ‘Inside Out’ Candy Apples https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-pixar-pier-edition-new-pixar-pier-glimpses-interactive-pixar-ball-inside-out-candy-apples/ https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-pixar-pier-edition-new-pixar-pier-glimpses-interactive-pixar-ball-inside-out-candy-apples/#respond Sat, 23 Jun 2018 17:43:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-pixar-pier-edition-new-pixar-pier-glimpses-interactive-pixar-ball-inside-out-candy-apples/

In this (mostly Pixar Pier-related) edition of Theme Park Bits:

  • Check out Incredibles Park and Pixar Pier’s interactive Pixar ball.
  • What will the array of colorful billboards inside Pixar Pier look like?
  • Take a gander at Lamplight Lounge and its menu.
  • Are you ready for Inside Out-themed candy apples?
  • What else is happening at Disney parks on June 23?
  • And more!

Disney California Adventure underwent the last bit of preparation this week for Pixar Pier’s opening on June 23. As mentioned last week, there will also be a brand spanking new Incredibles float joining the Paint the Night Parade on this same date. Below, you can see that float coming to life.

If you want to actually meet the Incredibles, you’ll be able to do that in the Incredibles Park area. Pixar Pier will also have an interactive Pixar ball, as you can see below.

In case you missed it, there’s a first look at the overhauled California Dreamin’ roller coaster from California Adventure Park that has been turned into The Incredicoaster. A video takes you through the ride and surrounding environment over here.

On the way into Pixar Pier, guests will encounter four billboards with Pixar characters and messages that read, “The Adventure Is Down There!”, “Find Your Special Moment!”, “Still No Arrests?”, and “How Come, Chief Willoughby?”

Actually, we don’t know the messages or designs of those last two billboards yet, but it’s not often I get the opportunity to reference Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in Theme Park Bits, so I’ll take my wins where I can get ’em.

One thing we do know about Pixar Pier is that its Lamplight Lounge will not be catering to budget travelers. $ 21.00 for a Grilled Chicken Salad? Yowza. At least the restaurant has a nice decor.

Lamplight Lounge isn’t the only option for food in Pixar Pier, of course. Full menus for Adorable Snowman Frozen Treats, Jack-Jack Cookie Num Nums, Poultry Palace, Senor Buzz Churros, Angry Dogs, and Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff are available here. There’s a foodie guide up over on Disney Parks Blog with pictures of some of the offerings at these places.

Bing Bong’s will actually open later in the summer, and when it does, you’ll be able to get Inside Out-themed candy apples there. How do you like them apples?

A lot of work has gone into the reimagining of Paradise Pier as Pixar Pier. Above, you can get a feel for some of that as Walt Disney Imagineers talk about their collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios.

A few random bits, not related to Pixar Pier:

The Enchanted Tiki Room is celebrating is 55th anniversary on June 23 with exclusive food and Funko Pop figures.

Walt Disney World bus times are now available through the My Disney Experience app.

Disappearing ink is one thing, but magic transparent walls? That’s sorcery!

WDW News Today reports that Epcot’s Frozen Ever After ride “will be cloned and appear almost unchanged at both Hong Kong [Disneyland] and [Walt Disney Studios] Paris.” Both of these parks have Frozen-themed lands coming to them in the future, as does Tokyo DisneySea, but the same site reports that DisneySea “has decided to build something original and more lavish related to Frozen.”

Universal Orlando's Cinematic Celebration

Finally, here’s a quick round-up of other recent theme park-related stories you might have missed on /Film:

The Concord Police Department, with their police dog “Dug,” arrested a teenage suspect believed to be involved in a phishing campaign at a local high school. (credit: Concord Police Department)

Last week, police in Concord, California, arrested a high school student for successfully deploying a series of phishing emails targeting teachers at his school in an attempt to change the grades of numerous students. Those emails provided a link to a site that appeared to be similar to an authentic grade portal, allowing the suspect to capture legitimate login credentials. Why the accused student did not change any of his own grades is unclear.

Citing the fact that the arrestee is under 18, the police department in Concord (which is 23 miles northeast of Oakland) has not released his name.

Curiously, the CPD also said that its officers were able to find an SD card hidden “in a tissue box that a normal person might not have checked” thanks to a police dog named Dug.

The Morning After: Elon Musk’s candy dreams https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-elon-musks-candy-dreams/ https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-elon-musks-candy-dreams/#respond Mon, 07 May 2018 11:13:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-elon-musks-candy-dreams/

It’s a busy week coming up. Microsoft’s Build conference kicks off today, then, with no time for a break, it’s Google I/O. What to expect from Microsoft? This. What does Google have planned? Something like this. Oh, and then there’s all the things from the weekend.

To celebrate the MMO’s anniversary, a tale from its past.
‘Eve Online’ turned 15, and its history is epic

Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the legendarily fascinating virtual world EVE Online, a massively multiplayer spaceship game that has become famous for the incredible stories that sometimes emerge from the community about heists and wars between thousands of players.

EVE is so interesting that it even has its own historian, Andrew Groen, a video game writer formerly of Wired who studies the politics and sociology at work in EVE’s virtual community over its 15-year run. Take a glimpse into its complicated, fascinating history.

Its effects can be felt on computers to this day.
Apple’s influential, iconic iMac turns 20

There are few individual computer models that have left a lasting mark on the industry, but you can definitely put the iMac on that list. Apple introduced its signature all-in-one desktop at a special event on May 6th, 1998, and while it makes me shudder to realize that was 20 years ago, the iMac (and personal computing as a whole) has come a very long way.

It’s the first state where the renewable energy is mandatory.
California to require solar panels on most new homes

Solar power is increasingly mainstream, but California is about to give it a giant boost. The state’s Energy Commission is expected to approve new energy standards that would require solar panels on the roofs of nearly all new homes, condos and apartment buildings from 2020 onward.

But why?
Elon Musk’s next project might be a candy company

No, Elon Musk isn’t done envisioning strange new ventures just yet. Hot on the heels of his cyborg dragon, a comedy project and the Boring Company’s flamethrower, the serial entrepreneur has declared that he’s starting a candy company. We’ve asked for confirmation, but Musk was quick to follow up with word that he was “super super serious.” Given that he announced the Boring Company in a Twitter thread about sluggish traffic, you shouldn’t be surprised if there’s a Musk-made confectionery in the near future.

Provided this isn’t just a lark, the main question is… why? And will any of Musk’s more grandiose projects play a role? We wouldn’t be surprised if the company delivered treats to stores with Tesla Semi trucks, but much of anything else remains a mystery. Just don’t expect SpaceX to send candy to Mars colonists… we think.
