Piers Morgan wasn’t even on Good Morning Britain and he was arguing with Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon this evening. Taking to Twitter accusing her of cancelling a scheduled appearance on the news and chat show first thing, the journalist asked the politician to “face the music” and “defend” her actions. But Sturgeon was quick to correct Morgan and explain the whole misunderstanding.

GMB is known for holding many politicians accountable, especially when Morgan is at the helm grilling them and tripping them up with their own contradictory comments.

For some politicians, his interview technique is too much to bear, but not Sturgeon who has appeared regularly on the show.

Tomorrow, he was hoping for another sparring match, but apparently she had cancelled, and he thought it was best to publicly out her.

Taking to Twitter, Morgan wrote: “Just heard you’ve cancelled your @GMB interview tomorrow @NicolaSturgeon – but are still doing the BBC.

“If you’re going to stand by your shockingly hypocritical CMO then face the music & defend it – don’t hide. Not like you.”

It wasn’t long before Sturgeon replied: “I haven’t cancelled anything @piersmorgan because the time hadn’t been agreed.

“I’m more than happy to do an interview if you make the time work with the BBC interview – just before 8am works for me. Or if not I’ll do it on Tuesday,” she stated.

Retweeting her reply, Morgan added: “Great, thank you. We got told something different. I’ll sort a time now.”

With millions of followers between them, someone interjected into the conversation and replied to Sturgeon’s tweet with: “Such a gracious response, to a rude and aggressive – and false – accusation. Perhaps you will receive an equally gracious and public apology from Mr. Morgan.”

“Why didn’t you just pick up the phone and ask her like any normal person rather than make it public just for likes,” another argued.

Others were pleased clarity was given and hoped Morgan would “roast” Sturgeon over Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer – Dr Catherine Calderwood – being pictured visiting her second home despite lockdown rules.

“Scottish CMO must go. Can’t wait to hear Nicola Sturgeon defend her,” a tweet read.

Another added: “Surely in the middle of a pandemic our CMO would not be incommunicado. So  did Nicola Sturgeon and her Ministers know her whereabouts the last couple of weekends?”

Is Netflix Cancelling Shows Before People Have a Reasonable Amount of Time to Watch Them? https://briefnews.eu/is-netflix-cancelling-shows-before-people-have-a-reasonable-amount-of-time-to-watch-them/ https://briefnews.eu/is-netflix-cancelling-shows-before-people-have-a-reasonable-amount-of-time-to-watch-them/#respond Tue, 25 Jun 2019 11:40:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-netflix-cancelling-shows-before-people-have-a-reasonable-amount-of-time-to-watch-them/

RELATED STORIES

When Netflix cancelled Chambers earlier this month, was your first reaction, “Already?” Or, “What is Chambers?” And when it was announced that Santa Clarita Diet‘s latest season would be its last, was your initial response, “Wait, Season 3 came out?!”

In other words: Is Netflix giving its audience enough time to A) become aware of, B) find, and then C) binge-watch its original fare — and in expedient enough a manner to be counted by the streaming giant’s renew/cancel metrics?

As told to Vulture about a year ago, Netflix renew/cancel decisions are largely based on the amount of people who complete a season within four weeks of its release. And the numbers appear to bear that out. Looking at seven of its most recent cancellations, the bad news came anywhere from within four weeks of premiere (in the case of Santa Clarita Diet’s abrupt axing after three seasons) to seven (as with one-and-doners Chambers, The Good Cop and Everything Sucks!). Similarly but on the happier side, Lucifer was renewed for its second Netflix season less than four weeks after its debut on the service.

But ask yourself, based on your own TV consumption habits: Is four weeks a reasonable enough span of time to find and binge something in full?

Let’s first talk about AWARENESSS. Like any outlet (be it broadcast, cable or streaming), Netflix will announce a series order… trickle out casting news… eventually release teasers, trailers, key art/posters and first photos… and then announce a premiere date — each step of which typically spawn news stories that let you know, “Something is coming.” Reviews embargoed for release ahead of the premiere might also remind you of an imminent release.

But whereas a broadcast or cable series that releases episodes on a weekly basis will also generate preview pieces, sneak peek releases and post mortems all season long, all serving as reminders that such-and-such show is now airing, a “binge” release doesn’t enjoy commensurate coverage. That’s because it’s tricky to highlight/preview any episode beyond the premiere, since you can’t know where any given reader is at with their binge. Recaps and post mortems are a bit easier, as TVLine for example has demonstrated with Fuller House, The Haunting of Hill House, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Lucifer, to name a few, because you can warn readers to “steer clear!” unless they have reached that episode.

Now, let’s say you have become aware of a new series/season. That’s great! But unless you sign onto Netflix with the specific mission to hunt it down, do you trust that you will be able to easily FIND IT? Personally speaking, I have oftentimes scratched my head that a brand-new release is not on my home screen, and sometimes is even buried deeeeep in the New Releases scroll. (Ask me about the time I went to watch Maniac and COULD. NOT. FIND IT.) Fact is, Netflix doesn’t want you to quickly find what you came for, binge it and then move along. Like the grocer who positions the milk in the back of the store, they want you to get meander and be exposed to other things. They want that person who logged on specifically to watch Luke Cage Season 2 to instead get distracted by a 32nd viewing of the Lost pilot. (Guilty as charged.)

I need not remind you, Netflix has a “mind-boggling amount of programming” (as chief content officer Ted Sarandos himself put it for Vulture). Per one report, we’re talking 700 original shows worldwide, plus 80 original films. As Sarandos summed up his strategy there: “More shows, more watching. More watching, more sub[scriber]s. More subs, more revenue. More revenue, more content.”

So, you heard about a show and you’ve sought it out or stumbled upon it on Netflix. Now be honest: More often than not, will you have the TIME to watch all of the episodes within that most important first month? Sure, we all have our occasional, purposeful “binges” — see: Stranger Things Season 3, coming July 4! — but in the name of giving Netflix the data they need to “vote” for renewal, is that something you can reliably pull off on the regular? Knowing just how much other stuff you are going to watch in total?

Or, said differently:  Should you have to binge an entire season in so fixed a time frame, as if it is some sort of cockamamie race?

If streaming is famously about “watching what you want, when you want,” we shouldn’t feel so pressured to plow through a season within a month. Netflix factoring in six (if not eight) weeks would set a far more realistic goal, recognizing that any given person is not only about any “one” show. Them old-timey broadcast-TV shows typically get at least 13 weeks to state their case, to open well and hold onto enough of that audience that they hopefully see another season, all while benefiting from regular reminders in the form of previews, interviews and TVLine’s world-famous What to Watch alerts.

“Binge” shows, though, only get that one big promotional push (if they’re lucky) at launch, and then… well, it’s in the TV gods’ hands.

Out of 31 Netflix renew/cancel decisions reported on by TVLine in the past 12 months, 74 percent were a thumbs-up (if we generously count all five powered-down Marvel shows as a package of “one”); Sarandos meanwhile has said he aims for an 80 percent renewal rate.

Maybe allowing audiences a better chance to build would help close that gap?

Thomas Cook angers passengers by cancelling flights to THIS popular holiday destination https://briefnews.eu/thomas-cook-angers-passengers-by-cancelling-flights-to-this-popular-holiday-destination/ https://briefnews.eu/thomas-cook-angers-passengers-by-cancelling-flights-to-this-popular-holiday-destination/#respond Wed, 28 Feb 2018 10:16:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/thomas-cook-angers-passengers-by-cancelling-flights-to-this-popular-holiday-destination/

Thomas Cook has cancelled all flights to Cape Verde, citing low demand as the reason.

Flights that will no longer go ahead starting from April 27th, according to the airline.

They tweeted one passenger who asked what flights were affected: “We are no longer flying to Cape Verde for Summer 2018.

“This affects flights and holidays from May-November.”

Many Britons who had already booked their holidays to the popular holiday destination found out that their flights had been cancelled.

Whilst they were offered full refunds, affected passengers have taken to social media citing a lack of explanation.

They also complain that no compensation has been offered for people who just booked flights.

Those who booked package holidays have been offered a £30 discount for a new holiday booking or a full refund, according to the airline.

One Twitter user wrote: “What better way to start a Monday morning than Thomas Cook cancelling your all inclusive holiday to Cape Verde!”

Others were shocked that they were offered nothing as an apology from the airline.

Another remarked: “Just spoke to customer services at Thomas Cook airlines regarding my cancelled flight to Sal Cape Verde to check on when all my money will be refunded and was informed that there is no chance of getting any compensation so it will be Tui from now on.”

Another found the flights on Black Friday, complaining that “now all the bargains have just gone”.

A Thomas Cook spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “We’ve stopped our Cape Verde flight for this summer due to low demand, and we’re very sorry for the inconvenience to our customers who have already booked.

“We are contacting everyone who has booked to Cape Verde between May and October to offer another of our great destinations. Our holidays to Cape Verde restart in November as scheduled.”

Cape Verde has recently been added to the map for British travellers thanks to it being featured in the TV show Celebs Go Dating.

TOWIE’s Gemma Collins recently featured on the show, heading to the islands on a date.

Cancelling flights to Barcelona: Refunds for people who refuse to fly to Spain 'unlikely' https://briefnews.eu/cancelling-flights-to-barcelona-refunds-for-people-who-refuse-to-fly-to-spain-unlikely/ https://briefnews.eu/cancelling-flights-to-barcelona-refunds-for-people-who-refuse-to-fly-to-spain-unlikely/#respond Sat, 19 Aug 2017 16:48:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cancelling-flights-to-barcelona-refunds-for-people-who-refuse-to-fly-to-spain-unlikely/

The Barcelona terrorist attacks on Las Ramblas on Thursday night shocked the world; the official death toll is currently on 14, and hundreds more injured.

Understandably, tourists might feel uneasy about an impending trip to the Spanish city.

But travellers looking to cancel their trip – and expect a refund from the flight or travel company – could be in for a shock.

Unless tourists have already opted for a terror add-on to their travel insurance, it’s unlikely they will be covered for cancellations in the wake of an attack.

It’s reported that a tour operator is only legally obliged to offer a full refund or alternative holiday if the Government – more specifically, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office – advices against visiting a destination.

Spain has not been put on this list.

It clearly states on the FCO website that terrorists are “likely” to try to carry out attacks in Spain and that attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners.

Putting this into perspective, the current threat level for international terrorism in the UK is severe.

Malcolm Tarling of the Assosciation of British Insurers told the Telegraph: “While some travel insurance policies may cover cancellation if the Government advises against it, you may not be covered if you decide against travelling when there is no advice not to do so.

“Travel insurance will cover any emergency medical treatment needed if caught up in an attack. If you are in or are planning got visit an area where an attack has occurred follow advice from the UK government.”

ESure – one of Britain’s biggest insurance companies – explains its travel insurance policy in terms of cancellation due to terrorist activity quite plainly on its website.

It states that cancellation on the grounds of war or terrorism isn’t covered by their standard travel insurance policy.

Official advice from the insurer reads: “Unfortunately, terrorists operate in a large proportion of the world and advising, for this reason, against travel to all these countries would inhibit world travel and disrupt normal life.

“It’s worth noting that the risk of being involved in a terrorist attack is very small, especially where the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is taken.”

Despite this it’s reported that EasyJet are offering any passenger not wishing to travel on flights to or from Barcelona in the next 48 hours – from yesterday – can change their flight with no change fee.

Despite this, the airline assured passengers headed to Barcelona that flights will operate as normal.

A spokesman for EasyJet said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims of the incident in Barcelona on August 17.

“The safety and security of its passengers and crews is always EasyJet’s highest priority.

“Our schedule is operating as normal, however we would advise that all passengers due to fly with us to or from Barcelona today check the status of their flight on our Flight Tracker page.”

The same can be said for Ryanair who issued a statement saying: “Our thoughts are with all of those affected by the events in Barcelona today.

“Our flights are operating as scheduled and we will inform customers of any further travel updates.”

Can you protect your holiday against terrorism?

In short, the answer is no. Standard travel insurance packages don’t always cover terrorist attacks.

If you’re worried about terrorist-related incidents on holiday, make sure your insurance package includes a terrorism-related clause before purchasing a policy.

Some will allow you to cancel and receive a refund – although there can be several caveats/

Worried tourists can buy an add-on policy – Safe Journey offers such a package. This includes up to £2,000 refund if you choose to cancel the trip you have booked.

Again, certain conditions apply – full details are available on the Safe Journey website.

Cover extends worldwide except for travel to, or from, or through these countries: Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Sudan and North Korea.

Is your flight affected? British Airways cancelling flights due to THUNDERSTORM warning https://briefnews.eu/is-your-flight-affected-british-airways-cancelling-flights-due-to-thunderstorm-warning/ https://briefnews.eu/is-your-flight-affected-british-airways-cancelling-flights-due-to-thunderstorm-warning/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 16:24:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-your-flight-affected-british-airways-cancelling-flights-due-to-thunderstorm-warning/

The recent hot weather has been a great start to the summer holidays.

However, a recent weather warning has predicted strong thunderstorms as the heat breaks.

In light of it, British Airways are cancelling many of their flights due to the weather warning.

It’s another problem for the troubled airline since the announcement of the strike this week.

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has imposed strict restrictions on a number of planes landing and taking off.

It is to affect Heathrow, Gatwick and London City with delays to be expected.

It’s another blow to British travellers heading on holiday this summer after a spate of travel concerns.

British Airways have suffered from strikes which are set to continue.

British Airways posted an alert on their website regarding the delays.

The alert stated: “As a result, it has been agreed between Heathrow airport, NATS and airlines to proactively reduce the flight schedules at Heathrow to ease congestion.

“These restrictions combined with aircraft being re-routed to avoid the areas of severe weather will lead to delays on some flights and a number of short-haul cancellations.

“We are sorry for the difficulties caused by the poor weather and are doing all we can to minimise the effect it has on our operations.”

Britons are cancelling their holiday plans this summer for fear of THIS https://briefnews.eu/britons-are-cancelling-their-holiday-plans-this-summer-for-fear-of-this/ https://briefnews.eu/britons-are-cancelling-their-holiday-plans-this-summer-for-fear-of-this/#respond Tue, 27 Jun 2017 17:33:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/britons-are-cancelling-their-holiday-plans-this-summer-for-fear-of-this/

Many European countries have been targeted by terrorist attacks in recent months.

Paris has suffered in recent years with attacks throughout the city.

The UK has also been targeted with the Manchester attack followed by the London Bridge attack

However, it seems some Britons are now cancelling their holidays abroad in light of recent terror threats.

Research by World Travel Market London found that of 2,000 Britons asked, 16 per cent admitted to not travelling or cancelling their holidays due to the threat of terrorism.

Another 17 per cent admitted that whilst they haven’t cancelled their plans, they would avoid countries that are currently at a ‘high’ terror threat level.

Paul Nelson, World Travel Market spokesperson, commented: “With most capital cities on high alert, it’s hardly surprising that we are more cautious in our decision when it comes to holidays.”

It also reports a surge in bookings to safer destinations such as Greece and Portugal.

Yet it isn’t all bad news.

Over half of those asked (55 per cent) that it has not affected their travelling this year.

Yet they also admitted that they felt there was a “distinct lack of travel advice on where is safe to go.”

Travellers can always check the gov.uk site for updated travel advice and warnings.
