On the surface, Father James Poole seemed like the cool priest in Nome, Alaska. He founded a Catholic mission radio station that broadcast his Jesuit sermons alongside contemporary pop hits. OZY and JPMorgan Chase have partnered to take a deeper look at how businesses can impact society for the better. Enjoy the rest of our special series here.
In the United States, the cost of college is reaching new levels. Student debt surpassed $ 1.5 trillion in 2018, and the Department of Education estimates that come 2023, 40 percent of borrowers won’t be able to pay back their student loans. The rising cost of tuition, among other factors, is leading many to believe that a four year degree might not be for everyone.
Enter the rise of job-training programs. These programs — which focus on skill-based training and preparation for the working world — are proving that there is more than one way to succeed in today’s workforce, especially in high-demand fields such as technology.
Here we take a look at two alternatives to secondary education, highlighting what makes these job-training programs so appealing for those eager to jump into a full-time career.
Apprenticeships offer full-time, on-the-job training that lasts between one and six years. And while starting salaries for apprenticeships may be lower at first, they pay off in the long run. According to a report by Mathematica Policy Research, those who complete apprenticeship programs in the United States earn an average of $ 250,000 more in their lifetime than those who do not. And technology-focused apprenticeships may even pay off in the near term — paying up to 50 percent more annually.
One organization that has found great success with the apprenticeship model is Apprenti, a Registered Apprenticeship Program whose mission is to provide a pipeline for underrepresented groups in technology to help them gain training, certification and job placement. In fact, JPMorgan Chase recently announced a partnership with Apprenti, which includes year-long paid apprenticeships for veterans in Columbus, Ohio beginning in 2019. A group of veterans will attend Java training prior to their apprenticeship and receive specialized training, a dedicated mentor and the opportunity to network with other professionals during their time at JPMorgan Chase. The strongest performers may also be offered a full-time job upon completion.
Apprenticeship programs like this are not only a means for companies to source employees, but also a way to diversify the talent pool — especially in highly competitive fields such as technology. And for JPMorgan Chase, this collaboration with Apprenti is just one of the many technology apprenticeship programs that the company offers globally, with others originating in cities like London, Glasgow, Houston and Singapore.
More of a traditional classroom experience, skill-based boot camps can last anywhere from two weeks to a few months. These boot camp programs are typically more intensive than apprenticeships, as they focus on training for one specific skill or task. And according to the Council on Integrity Results Reporting, 80 percent of participants in coding-specific boot camps find relevant jobs with an average starting salary of $ 70,000.
While boot camps are most commonly open to high school graduates and above, many individuals looking to change careers also end up choosing boot camps over further education, such as graduate school. Christopher Nobles, a software engineer at JPMorgan Chase, was working as a social worker when he found Zip Code Wilmington, a Java coding boot camp that prepares individuals with minimal coding backgrounds for entry-level software engineering jobs. “Zip Code was an opportunity that I’d never seen before,” Nobles said. “I began to realize that a technology career was possible.”
Like many boot camps, Zip Code funnels talent to affiliated companies — including Nobles’ current employer, JPMorgan Chase. “We need to ensure that we have employees with different perspectives that can challenge each other,” said Jennifer McDermott, executive director of global technology diversity & inclusion at JPMorgan Chase. “Job training programs are a great way to bring new ideas to the table.”
Be it through a coding boot camp or a software engineering apprenticeship, these pathways are helping many individuals — including those who may be underrepresented in high-demand fields such as technology — join the vibrant American economy. And some are doing it without ever having stepped foot in a college classroom. Imagine that…

A high school near Charlotte, North Carolina, where one student fatally shot another on Monday morning resumed classes hours after the shooting because it was the safest thing to do for its students, Tracy Russ, a representative of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district, told Business Insider in an email Monday.
“The decision was made after lockdown was released by law enforcement to help ensure the safety of students on campus until dismissal and transportation arrangements could be made with families,” Russ explained.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Glossy brochures with photos of young adults traipsing around leafy quads might dominate the popular imagination of what higher education looks like. But steadily and dramatically, we’re seeing movement away from a life of lecture halls and dorms.
The decline from 18.3 million to 17.1 million (6.4 percent) is spelled out in a new study from the Babson Survey Research Group on online and distance learning. The study found a decline in higher ed enrollment overall, coupled with growth in students enrolled only in distance courses — now at 3 million, or about 15 percent of the overall higher ed population. The drop on campus has been slow and steady in recent years, but it’s become impossible to dismiss as a blip. “It’s something that is death by a thousand cuts as opposed to a stab in the heart,” says Jeff Seaman, co-director of Babson Survey Research Group, an education-focused firm affiliated with Babson College.
The decline has been uneven. For-profit colleges saw a whopping 44.1 percent drop in on-campus learners, as the industry suffered from bad press and fresh government crackdowns. Public and private nonprofit schools saw smaller, but still real, declines in campus students.
There is a mix of factors at play. Demographic trends mean there are fewer 18-year-olds entering the classic college years. “But that’s been the minority student in higher ed for some time,” Seaman points out.
To get at the more complex reasons for the enrollment plunge, take a deeper dive into the data. Two-year public colleges were hit the hardest in total, losing 1 million campus students (16.3 percent) from 2012 to 2016, according to figures Seaman shared with OZY. Four-year public colleges actually saw 5.2 percent campus growth in that span, while private nonprofit four-year schools saw a 4.1 percent decline. Because the lowest-cost options took the biggest loss, it does not appear that the bubble finally popped on soaring college costs. Instead, the numbers are evidence of education’s countercyclical nature: The humming economy and low unemployment rate curtail the need to go back to school.
The enrollment squeeze is mostly hitting smaller institutions, rather than bigger brand-name schools. While the impact has been limited so far, Seaman says he expects more program downsizing and institution mergers in the future. Meanwhile, online learning is on the rise because of its lower cost, improving reputation and convenience for students with jobs and families.
For schools on the brink, Mike Goldstein, senior counsel at education industry law firm Cooley, says a pivot to cyber is not a cure-all. “Online is expensive to do right, and it’s a very crowded market,” Goldstein says. “Unless you’ve got a reason why students are going to enroll in your online service, you’re not necessarily going to solve anything.”
Goldstein says the enrollment declines are small enough that he’s not expecting shuttered dorms and paved-over quads anytime soon. The more intriguing trend in the report, to him, is where the online growth is happening: Even though technology enables students to take classes from schools located anywhere, 56.1 percent of distance-only students are enrolled at schools in their home states — a figure that has been on the rise. That shows not only how hard it is to build a reputable national online brand, as a handful of big players such as Southern New Hampshire University and Grand Canyon University have done, but also how local institutions can serve the students they have always served.
They just might have to update those brochures.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — A Confederate statue in the heart of North Carolina’s flagship university was toppled Monday night during a rally by hundreds of protesters who decried the memorial known as “Silent Sam” as a symbol of racist heritage.
The crowd gathered across the street from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill plaza for a series of speakers at 7 p.m. before heading over to the quadrangle. Then, about two hours into the protest, a group surrounded the statue and pulled it down, according to television footage. Once it was on the ground, demonstrators kicked it and cheered.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

On move-in day at Michigan State University’s College of Engineering, freshmen and their parents discover something surprising. Mingling among the families and faculty are teams of volunteers from major companies like General Electric and Consumers Energy, helping students move in. Even more surprising, there’s a good chance the person schlepping futons up four flights of stairs is a vice president or chief engineer. That’s how hard employers are working to develop relationships with students from day one.
“Large companies used to feel they could go to the career fair and hire 30 seniors and get top talent,” says Jason Weingarten, co-founder and CEO of Yello, a Chicago-based startup that builds talent-acquisition software. “Now students have been picked away through internships, externships, faculty referrals — when you get to senior year, the cream of the crop is gone.”
The whole idea is to create a career education experience that feels baked into student life, not ringed off and intimidating.
That doesn’t mean employers are turning up on the first day of freshman year and asking for résumés. “Showing up simply as a recruiter is not going to work in today’s environment,” says Farouk Dey, dean of experiential education at Stanford University, where he oversees BEAM (Bridging Education, Ambition & Meaningful Work) career education. “Engaging in campus activities, serving as a partner and educator — those are some of the smartest things an employer can do.” Especially since, as Dey points out, students have a lot of options. They might go to graduate school, join the gig economy, even drive for Lyft for six months before traveling. Companies have to work hard to get them.
So what does this look like? Well, take General Electric. The 125-year-old corporate giant is now using virtual reality to showcase its products and technology on campus and hosting hackathons as a way to connect with students. GE reps also mentor undergraduates and run résumé workshops — all very different from a guy in a tie shaking your hand from a kiosk at the senior year career fair.
Companies that can’t send armies of recruiters are finding ways to compete too. Yello’s mobile app allows employers to track students who show interest at an event, giving organizations information on which campuses they do well on. Then, through a digital platform, they invite students to next steps: interviews, applications or — the golden ticket — an internship offer. Social media amplifies their reach as well.
Meanwhile, universities are also rethinking their approach to career services. Garth Motschenbacher, director of employer relations at MSU College of Engineering, has his team sit in a bullpen and hires students — “career peers” — to work the front desk, so that all initial engagement with employers and students goes through them. A career consultant is embedded in the college, serving as a direct link between engineering students and the MSU Career Services Network. Formality is ditched as well; instead, employers are invited for informal meet-ups. “I realized if I put ‘business casual’ on an event, students froze,” says Motschenbacher. “The more casual you make things, the more students start letting their hair down and talking about what they really want.”
The whole idea is to create a career education experience that feels baked into student life, not ringed off and intimidating. And it starts early. At MSU’s Freshman Extravaganza, a résumé-free event for engineering students and employers, many first-years have never interacted with a company before. “I came for the free food,” says Arielle Tolbert, now a junior majoring in computer engineering who’s already locked in a summer internship. “But it was great exposure. I realized what skills I was lacking and that I needed to work on my elevator speech. I also got to know employers.”
Of course, a lot of the college experience is lost if students spend four years thinking about how to land a job. Part of the problem is massive student debt. Undergrads worried about paying back six figures “aren’t thinking about what sorority to join or making friends,” says Weingarten. “They’re thinking, how am I going to pay this back?” And internships, especially at top tech firms, are pretty lucrative. (Many pay upward of $ 6,000 per month.) Which brings up another issue: Early recruiting tends to favor STEM students and chokes off other paths of study, like liberal arts.
Many educators understand this risk. At MSU, engineering students are required to take humanities classes. Colleges and universities such as George Mason, Miami University of Ohio, Stanford and William & Mary are pivoting from transactional, brick-and-mortar career centers to an embedded, community approach. And while Dey acknowledges that some would say any kind of freshman/sophomore career education pushes students too early toward vocational thinking, “We’re not here to talk to freshmen about what job they should have when they graduate,” he says. “We want to know what they value in life and what kind of impact they want to have on their community.”
As part of the shift from job placement to career education, Stanford students interested in similar things — a specific major, say, or the nonprofit sector or working in a creative field — come together in community settings and interact with alums and employers. And while Stanford’s largest student/employer meet-up hosts about 300 employers and thousands of students, it isn’t called a career fair. “We have photo booths, party tricks — lots of activities that force you to get to know each other,” Dey says.
The idea is to create connections that increase a student’s chances of stumbling in front of that lucky moment at the right time. Because behind every dream job, there’s usually a mix of perfect timing and happenstance. Maybe in 10 years we’ll have an app for that too.

The New York Times reported this evening that Apple entered into a partnership with Volkswagen Group to pair a number of electric T6 Transporter vans with Apple’s proprietary autonomous vehicle software. The vans will reportedly be used to shuttle employees around Apple’s company campus, and it’s not clear whether the deal will extend from there.
The Times says that this deal only comes after Apple tried to find a partner in BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company has shed hundreds of employees on the project, in a department that once boasted about 1,000 workers.
According to the Times‘ sources—”five people familiar with the negotiations who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly”—BMW and Mercedes-Benz rejected a partnership with Apple due to requirements from the Cupertino-based firm to turn over all data and some design aspects of the car.
