Annapurna Mellor

Annapurna Mellor

October 24, 2018

Every year, some 30,000 camels descend on Pushkar, a small town in the state of Rajasthan, in what’s been billed as India’s “greatest tribal gathering”. Photographer Annapurna Mellor captures the madness.

Gazing through his long, sandy eyelashes, the beast stares curiously into my lens. I’ve photographed camels before—on the dunes of the Gobi, the Sahara, and Egypt’s Western Desert—and each time, they strike me as grand, proud, tranquil beings.

Despite their grace, it’s my own kind, the herders who live among these creatures, who I’m here to learn more about.

Unlike most towns in India, Pushkar doesn’t have a railway station. To reach it, you have to take a jam-packed bus from the nearby city of Ajmer. For an hour, the bus rocks and rumbles down the dusty road before skidding to a halt at the edge of the town.

Compared to other Rajasthani towns I’ve visited, Pushkar is quiet. I arrived a few days ago, on one of the last days of Diwali and a week before the official start of the famous Pushkar Camel Fair. As I walk around town on my first night, locals light candles along the edges of Pushkar Lake and the sky glows a deep pink. This sleepy town has already grabbed me by the eyeballs—and I haven’t even spied a camel yet.

Pushkar lies in the west of India, between the sandy blankets of the Thar Desert and the technicolor cities of Rajasthan. It’s a small town, shrouded by spirituality—the lake in the center of town is said to have been formed by the tears of the Hindu God, Shiva. As such, it attracts pilgrims from all over India.

I meet Ram in a local chai (tea) shop in the early days of the fair. He’s a local musician, and the same age as me. I’m carrying a heavy, overpriced camera, but his instrument of choice is a piece of wood he’s carved into an ektaara—an Indian guitar.

Between sips of chai, he plucks it melodically, singing local folk songs about the harshness of the desert and family life. We become friends, and he introduces me to many of the herders and helps me gain their trust—enough for them to let me photograph their families (and their camels).

On our first morning together out on the dunes, a family of nomads invite us into their circle; the mother, who has a delicate face and bright green eyes, begins brewing chai masala spices with a bag of sweet milk.

The fair originally began as a way to attract camel and cattle traders to do business during the holy Kartik Purnima festival, traditionally held here on the full moon in the Hindu lunar month of Kartika (November-December). But inevitably, it’s now become a major drawcard for tourists, and the traditional camel trading has now given way to a program of activities—including camel beauty contests, camel racing and camel dancing competitions.

The population of Pushkar, usually home to some 21,000 locals, booms to 400,000 during the festival. As the town fills with tourists and pilgrims, the official fair begins and a cultural program takes place alongside the camel market. There’s no shortage of activities and performances to behold—from temple dancing, folk music concerts, spiritual and heritage walks, and even a moustache competition.

While the weeks before the fair had been a serene affair, chaos sets in as soon as the official fair kicks off. Ram hates this part, and it doesn’t take me long to see why.

Tour groups arrive en masse, armed with zoom lenses, capturing the faces of the herders and their families without permission. I notice that many of the families I had spent time had left before the fair began, or were beginning to pack up early, fleeing the zoo-like pandemonium.

Away from the camel herding grounds, the cultural performances provide some alternative entertainment, and the women in their best clothes—bright colors, sequins, lavish fabrics—is a wonderful sight to capture.

The streets of this once-sleepy town are constantly congested and street performers from neighboring villages mark off street corners to charm snakes, play local music or perform circus tricks.

The calm of Pushkar is no longer, but I still find places of refuge—up Snake Mountain, which looms over the city, or out in Ram’s home village. Down at the lake, pilgrims are now visiting in their thousands, dipping into the holy waters.

As the fair eventually winds down, the remaining herders round up their camels and begin to march them over the desert back to their villages in the Western Thar Desert—and Pushkar returns to its usual sleepiness. With the madness over, Ram breathes a sigh of relief. Until next year, that is, when the surreal Pushkar Camel Fair will inevitably descend on the town again.

The ultimate travel companion? A beginner’s guide to shopping for a camel https://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-travel-companion-a-beginners-guide-to-shopping-for-a-camel/ https://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-travel-companion-a-beginners-guide-to-shopping-for-a-camel/#respond Thu, 13 Sep 2018 00:49:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-travel-companion-a-beginners-guide-to-shopping-for-a-camel/
Leon McCarron

They’re sturdy, resilient and reliable. Sure, the camel may well be the ultimate travel companion for desert adventures but, asks our featured contributor Leon McCarron, how do you even go about buying one?

A quick disclaimer: I have never bought a camel.

I am, you might say, an aspirational camel buyer. I’m in the market for one. And yet I live in London, so it probably won’t transpire any time soon. Instead I’ll continue to scheme, and dream, and wait for the day until I can legitimately call myself a camel owner.

A fair question might be: Why would someone in London think of buying a camel? Of course, I don’t want it here. It wouldn’t be particularly useful on Oxford Street on a busy Saturday—not that it would even be the oddest thing there. What I do aspire to, though, is to purchase a camel for another desert crossing at some point in the future.

To date, I’ve traveled on foot in the Gobi and the Empty Quarter, and in 2016, I spent a couple of weeks in the Southern Sinai desert. There, I walked with two Bedouin and a wonderful, friendly and sturdy camel called Harboush. Harboush carried all the kit for our team of four, as well as food for over a week and up to three days’ worth of water. He walked over cracked, hardened earth, through soft and rippled sand, and over sharp, fractured granite rock.

Never once did he complain, and our only falling-out was on the first evening when he got his nose into the box of cucumbers. In hindsight, it was a small tiff, and all was soon forgiven.

Firstly, Emma reports, one begins by deciding what sort of camel one wants—there are racing camels, breeding camels, camels for milking, and so on. In Sinai, a young male camel for the purpose of traveling long distances should cost between $ 600 and $ 1200 depending on age and pedigree. And if that sounds a lot, when I asked the same question of a friend in the UAE, I was told that $ 1000 wouldn’t even buy a blind, lame beast in the Gulf.

Next, you look at some of the physical elements. “A prospective buyer should stand behind the camel and watch it walk, checking the gait for irregularities,” she says. The ears and tail also have telltale signs about the health and strength of the animal and, as Emma wonderfully summarized in a translation for me: “It’s all about the hump.”

RELATED: Meet the men who spent 46 days in the wilderness (on purpose)

The hump is a fat store—not water, as is sometimes believed—and there should be space behind it. This indicates good breeding. Then there’s the question of personality. Camels will not display too many unique characteristics until about the age of four or five but after that, by watching how they interact with other camels (as well as humans) one should get an idea of whether it is generally cheery—like dear Harboush—or whether they are inherently grumpy, and therefore best passed on.

Perhaps the most romantic notion of all travel with animals is that of journeys on horseback; riding off into the sunset in Rockies or the Andes or, as adventurer Charlie Walker did, into the Mongolian grasslands. Charlie’s story is, in equal measures, exciting, and cautionary.

He had arrived in Ulaanbaatar, having walked for six weeks to get there from Beijing, and begun to dream of taking the weight off bloodied feet for the next stage. After asking around, he was driven out to a nearby village where, amid regular sessions of copious vodka-drinking, he was shown all manner of skinny and un-suitable Mongolian horses.

RELATED: What does it take to be a professional adventurer?

Around midnight, one was brought out that looked reasonably healthy (thought whether that impression had anything to do with the vodka consumed remains a mystery). A deal was struck but, when he returned in the morning to collect his new steed, he was presented with an entirely different horse—or, rather, a rather small and unimpressive-looking pony. He saddled up nonetheless, and set off.

As one might expect, the results were mixed. ‘Little Nicky’ was moody, and the best that can be said of their relationship is that they came to co-exist in relatively harmony—but in the knowledge that really neither was happy. Eventually, Little Nicky was stolen in the night by horse thieves (or, perhaps, pony thieves.) Charlie finished his walk on foot. Next time, Charlie said, he’d look for a stronger, friendlier Central Asian Horse. Or, take a motorbike.

I too have used horses on journeys in the past, with reasonable success, and I even once bought a donkey (though I never actually took it anywhere—that’s a story for another time).

But it’s still the camel that I have my heart set on. It seems, from the stories of friends and experts both here and elsewhere, that they key is to make sure the animal has been well-treated in the past, and that I (or you) as a new owner will continue to do that.

As a final tip—and this advice has cropped up numerous times, including from Sinai—when it comes to really assessing an animal, some people just know. I’m not sure if this means that there are imperceptible differences, or if it’s more of a mystical thing, but whatever it is, it sounds good.

Sadly, I don’t have the gift. I’m pretty sure of that. But, perhaps you do. And, if these stories have awakened a previously dormant camel-lover within you, then there’s only one way to find out. All I ask is that if you do go to buy a camel anytime soon, you take me with you.

WATCH: Tourist gets attacked by a camel while trying to take a selfie https://briefnews.eu/watch-tourist-gets-attacked-by-a-camel-while-trying-to-take-a-selfie/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-tourist-gets-attacked-by-a-camel-while-trying-to-take-a-selfie/#respond Sun, 12 Aug 2018 13:45:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-tourist-gets-attacked-by-a-camel-while-trying-to-take-a-selfie/

The video captured the young man walking with a group of camels behind him.

Behind him, at least seven of the animals could be seen joining in him the desert.

The man, clad in a white shirt and glasses, was filming and tried to take a selfie.

Suddenly, one of the camels jumped out from behind him and reared up.

The camel then kicked his front legs forward, jumping on top of the man and knocked his glasses off.

The camera was sent flying from his hand as the man fell on the ground.

As the video ended, the view was of the sky after it landed on the ground and out of the man’s grip.

The music that was playing ends after the man grunted in pain and tripped.

The video has attracted more than 90,000 views in just a few days.

Online users found the camel’s actions hilarious after it was posted on sharing website Imgur.

A user said: “Camel just wanted him to turn the phone.”

One wrote: “Camels are notoriously mean. But still.”

Another tried to explain the camel’s actions: “That’s the bull camel leading his caravan/herd/flock/train and the kid disrespected his authority by walking to the front. Camel discipline.”

It is not the first time animals attacking humans has been caught on camera.

In Bali, a man visited the famous Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud.

While it is encouraged to play with the animals, one took less kindly to it.

As it clambered down his arms, the monkey then bit the tourist on the hand as he tried to take his bag back.

The man then left the area with his bag in tow and away from the creatures,

While the bite didn’t appear too bad, it wasn’t made clear if he was seriously injured.

Uproar at Saudi Arabian camel beauty contest as contestants caught using Botox https://briefnews.eu/uproar-at-saudi-arabian-camel-beauty-contest-as-contestants-caught-using-botox/ https://briefnews.eu/uproar-at-saudi-arabian-camel-beauty-contest-as-contestants-caught-using-botox/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 20:17:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uproar-at-saudi-arabian-camel-beauty-contest-as-contestants-caught-using-botox/ A dozen camels have been disqualified from an annual beauty contest in Saudi Arabia after their trainers used Botox to enhance their appearance.

The contest is part of a month-long festival, located on the outskirts of Riyadh, and is designed to celebrate the camel, which is considered a “symbol of Saudi Arabia,” Fawzan al-Madi, chief judge of the contest, told Reuters.

“We used to preserve it out of necessity, now we preserve it as a pastime,” he added.

The camels take part in a series of races and show competitions in the hope of bagging a portion of the combined prize fund of 213 million riyals ($ 57 million).

In the beauty portion of the contest, judges rate the size of the animal’s lips, cheeks, head and knees while crowds of men watch from the bleachers. Any form of camel modification is strictly prohibited, however with such a substantial prize up for grabs, some contestants have resorted to extreme measures to come out on top. Including, but not limited to, the use of Botox.

“Camels that are found with drugs in the lips, shaved, dyed in any parts of the body, or with changes from natural form are not allowed [sic],” the 2017 handbook says, reports Newshub.

This year, some 300,000 people travelled to the festival which includes a petting zoo of the world’s tallest and shortest camels, a museum of life-sized sand sculptures of camels, camel milk tastings, and a planetarium showing how Arabs on camels used the stars as a guide to explore.

Showing off her style credentials, Meghan wore a sleek camel coat which was belted tight around her waist.

She topped this off with an extravagant brown hat, which had a twist details to the side.

Meghan walked arm in arm with her husbnad-to-be, smiling as she went.

Meghan paired the look with a pair of brown suede boots.

Grand National 2017 – stunning girl almost suffers CAMEL TOE disaster in pink lace outfit https://briefnews.eu/grand-national-2017-stunning-girl-almost-suffers-camel-toe-disaster-in-pink-lace-outfit/ https://briefnews.eu/grand-national-2017-stunning-girl-almost-suffers-camel-toe-disaster-in-pink-lace-outfit/#respond Sat, 08 Apr 2017 11:53:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/grand-national-2017-stunning-girl-almost-suffers-camel-toe-disaster-in-pink-lace-outfit/

The official Grand National race will take place this afternoon at 5.15pm and thousands will flock to the Merseyside racetrack.

The women of Aintree hit headlines on Thursday and Friday with their brightly-coloured outfits.

Arriving in flocks, the ladies were keen to show off their wares in skimpy dresses as the sun shone.

Today is no different with one of the first race-goers arriving in little more than underwear for her day out. One young girl happily posed for pictures in a little lace outfit showing off more than intended.

The brunette sipped Moet champagne before posing before the crowds in her underwear-inspired dress. The high-waisted pants clearly visible through her sheer skirt.

The young lady almost suffered a camel toe disaster as the wind blew her skirt across but she saved herself with a clutch bag.

Holding her pass she looked thrilled to be at the event and certainly caught the eye of other race attendees.

But it’s not just the women who are standing out from the crowd. A young man arrived in RayBan sunglasses and a suit with a US dollar print.

The two-piece with a matching tie certainly caught the eye of sun-basking race-goers as he posed for pictures on a grassy hill.

Quaffing a glass of Champagne, one young lady appeared to be having trouble with her fascinator.

Wearing a very revealing pink dress and a matching top, the women pulled a face as she adjusted her hair under the feathery accessory.

The Grand National has a total prize fund of £1 million with the victor taking home the grand prize of £561,300.

Last year jockey Dave Mullins raced to the finish line first on top of the aptly named winner Rule The World.

The race itself involves two laps of a challenging four-mile race track with 16 fences for the horses to jump over.

For the first time ever, ITV will air the Grand National races with presenter Ed Chamberlin at the helm.

ITV’s live coverage will also be broadcast on the ITV Hub and ITV.com/Racing. Mobile punters can also download the ITV Racing app on iOS and Android.
