Weight loss is often a long and challenging process, with many dieters choosing to give up their favourite foods in favour of healthy, low-calorie options.
But something that can prohibit weight loss is actually alcoholic beverages, with many drinks packing in hundreds of unnoticed calories.
A recent survey by Finder.com revealed that two thirds of Britons have no idea how man calories are in common alcoholic drinks.
This includes many who dangerously underestimated the amount – 2.7 million people think there are less than 40 calories in a pint of lager, despite the correct figure being over 200.
According to the findings, millennials tend to underestimate the calories in drinks whereas baby boomers overestimate, and despite drinking twice as much alcohol every week, men are 20 per cent more likely to be clueless.
The report also highlighted the calories in different drinks, including surprising stats such as Sambuca having 45 per cent more calories than other spirits.
The survey hinted that the UK’s growing weight problem could be linked to Briton’s love for booze.
The average Briton consumes 21 units of booze a week, with a unit being an average of 85 calories, adding up to an extra 1,750 calories a week.
One pound of fat is equal to around 3,500 calories, meaning Britons are consuming a pound in fat worth of alcohol every two weeks.
By minimising alcohol intake or cutting it out entirely, the average person could lose 27 pounds in a year.
A pint of lager topped the calorie count list with a whopping 230 calories per pint, with 65 per cent of Britons having no idea of the calorie count.
Cider and Guinness were closely behind lager, with 216 and 218 calories, respectively.
Another British summertime favourite, wine, also placed in the top 10 most calorie-packed drinks.
A medium glass of wine (175ml) has around 159 calories in it, with 59 per cent of those surveyed unaware of the calorie intake.
One of the lowest amount of calories found was gin, with only 52. But served as a double measure with topic, the amount significantly rises to 160 calories.
There’s possible good news if you’re counting calories: Research from the University of British Columbia suggests calories from sugar can be lost during the baking process, so what’s shown on a food label may not reflect the calories consumed.

Weight loss can be helped by quitting smoking, scientists at Yale University have found.
While it was once thought that smoking could help dieters stay slim by dulling down their appetite, smokers actually have far worse diets that former-smokers or non-smokers.
Those who smoke eat around 200 more calories a day.
It seems that while they eat smaller portions, smokers are opting for more calorie dense foods.
Those who smoke everyday eat around 2.02 calories per gram of food they consume.
One the other hand those who smoke, but not everyday, eat around 1.89 calories per gram.
People who have never smoked consume 1.79 calories per gram of food.
Scientist believed that those who smoked were choosing a lower calorie diet that those who didn’t.
Smokers ate less fruit and vegetables, putting them at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
A scientist involved in the research said: “We know from the literature that concerns about weight gain are barriers to quitting smoking, and we know that diets high in energy density are associated with higher body weight.
“Our results suggest that addressing the energy density in diets of current smokers may be a good target for interventions as part of a larger smoking cessation plan.”
So if you are looking to quit smoking and improve your health for good, make sure you eat a diet full of healthy carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables and brown rice.
The study looked at 5293 adults who took the National Health and Examination Survey.
The NHS offers lots of help on quitting smoking, including how to stop without putting on weight.
It said: “After you quit smoking, your body burns calories more slowly. Even if you eat no more than when you smoked, you may put on weight – but being more active can help.
“Regular exercise may prevent about half the weight gain expected after a year of quitting smoking. It burns off calories and reduces cravings for cigarettes.”
Following the 5:2 diet can help you lose weight quickly, according to experts.
Restricting your calories on just two days of the week has a quicker weight loss effect than cutting calories every day.
People on the 5 2 diet, where you eat normally for five days and consume a low number of calories (around 600) on two days, are said to drop pounds faster.
Those following the diet plan were able to reach at least five per cent weight loss within two months, found the researchers.
Most people that follow a diet plan do it the wrong way.
They either lack the knowledge to properly structure a diet plan or make the diet plan unnecessarily hard. Following a diet plan should be helpful in reaching your goal, not a hindrance.
I’m generally not a big believer in “one size fits all” diet plans, as diet plans work best when customized. This is because there are plenty of variables that need to be considered when structuring a diet plan. These variables include: age, gender, physical activity level, goals such as weight loss, maintenance or muscle build up, food preference or distaste.
All these factors can heavily affect a diet plan. The best diet plan is the diet plan that works for you–one plan that suits your goals and is structured in a sustainable way.
Therefore, the following diet plan is not intended to be followed strictly. Keep the meals and ideas that you like and disregard the other ones. Individualize the plan by yourself using apps such as MyFitnessPal or with the help of a knowledgeable friend or coach.
But let’s first address the basics:
I know a young woman with a meal plan that consists of bland noodles, literally. The only food that this person eats is noodles. Therefore noodles are on her dining table nearly 365 days a year.
This is incredibly unhealthy for obvious reasons. One food alone doesn’t provide you with the necessary nutrients to sustain a healthy existence. The reason she’s eating only one food and isn’t looking to change anytime soon is because noodles are the only food that she likes.
This is what the nutrition industry doesn’t want you to know: your taste buds can change. Taste is extremely variable. Have you ever eaten a food, hated it, but after continuous exposure to the thing you’ve become accustomed to it? Maybe you even started to like it? This happened to me multiple times.
I just recently started eliminating added salt out of my diet. In the first week every food tasted completely bland. But after 2 weeks, unsalted food tasted completely normal as though it had been seasoned with salt just seconds before.
The truth is, that you can’t listen to your body these days when it comes to your food intake. The nutrition industry is making you addicted to its products by using artificial sweeteners, aromas and colors. The healthiest foods are the ones that you can find in the produce aisle.
But remember that healthy is always relative.
A healthy diet is always relative. – Dr. Michael Greger MD
I remember talking to my mother a couple of years ago. Back then I used to eat McDonalds; after one time I had eaten there I realized that I was not performing at my usual level. This was also the time when I was usually eating about 1 kilogram of meat every single day.
Back then I thought that my diet plan was ‘healthy’. I didn’t realize that there was plenty of room for optimization.
Now I know that healthy is always relative. A pack of donuts is healthy when the alternative is pure sugar. Pancakes are healthy if the alternatives are donuts. Whole grain vegan pancakes are healthy if the alternative is traditional pancakes.
Healthy is relative. The healthiest diet plan for you is the one that fits these two premises:
A couple of my friends tank their cars with premium gasoline, yet don’t pay attention for a single minute to the foods they put in their bodies. Their flats where they choose to live in are decorated by designers. Yet they don’t take care of the place where they necessarily have to live in: their bodies.
Your body is renewing itself every 7-10 years. This is pretty astounding. A couple trillions of cells get replaced in that period. And where does your body get the building blocks from? Your diet.
You have to set your priorities straight. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.
This plan is suited to reach an average goal of about 2,000 calories per day (1942cal to be exact). This is the ideal calorie intake of an average women, or for an average man who is looking to lose weight (500 calorie deficit per day, resulting in about 0.5kg weight loss per week).
The amount of fiber is around 50grams, which is nearly double the amount of the minimum daily intake and three times the amount in the average american diet.[1]
This means that the meal plan is extremely healthy in comparison to what you’ll find on the market. You might feel a big increase in your energy.
This meal plan is ideally for people who want to start eating a vegan diet. The meals are diverse, so you’re able to see the full range of what you can expect on a vegan diet.
Note: This plan is not meant to be followed 100%. Take all the positive things that you want from this plan and eliminate the negative ones. If you want to have a fully customized plan, you can visit my website (Hint: There’s a free gift for you).
Important: Drink 3-4 liters of water every day and add green tea / coffee to your diet, as these are antioxidant-rich and healthy beverages.

IF YOU want to keep your brain young – you need to cut calories and stick to a low-fat diet, scientists believe.![]()
A TOP health official has said that Britain needs to go on a diet after it emerged that some of the nation’s children are eating the equivalent of an extra meal a day in calories.![]()
Weight loss might be high on the list of priorities for many Britons after it was revealed that the UK is the fattest country in Western Europe.
Now new advice has been launched as to how many calories you should really be eating per day.
Public Health England (PHE) claims adults should be eating around 1600 calories per day, 400 less that the government recommendation of 2000.
However, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) claims men in the UK are eating 1000 calories more than they should a day, while women ate an extra 800 calories.
Calories is simply the amount of energy that your body can covert to food stored in any food.
Vegetables, fruit and other carbohydrates tend to be low in calories, while other foods such meat, cheese and other fatty foods are higher in calories.
When you body has more than the amount of calories it needs to sustain itself it stores these left over calories as fat.
When the body has less than the amount of calories it needs to sustain itself it breaks down stored fat in the body to use for fuel.
How much a person needs to eat depends on their gender and current size.
Each person burns a different number of calories a day simply to sustain their bodies, which depends on the variables listed above.
A diet plan can be adjusted to take in to account how many calories you burn at rest, which can help you lose weight.
How many calories you burn at rest is called your basal metabolic rate, or BMR.
Your basal metabolic rate can be calculated using the Mifflin St. Jeor Equation – but each gender must the figure calculate differently.
Women: BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (years) – 161
Men: BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (years) + 5
So a 25-year-old, 120lb, 5 ft 3in woman’s basal metabolic weight would be 1258 calories.
