DIABETES patients are to be prescribed a “very low calorie diet” in a new action plan to battle the disease, NHS England announced yesterday.![]()
Free trade agreements with the United States can contribute to rising obesity by encouraging a rise in caloric availability and likely intake, researcher says.
]]>
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, affects more than one in four adults in the UK.
Particular foods in your diet can have a negative impact on high blood pressure, such as those that contain high levels of salt.
Blood Pressure UK states eating too much salt is the biggest cause of high blood pressure and an adults should eat no more than 6g of salt a day.
Most of the salt we eat every day is hidden which means it’s already in processed foods like bread, biscuits and breakfast cereals, and prepared ready meals or takeaways, and tinned soups are another surprising food people with high blood pressure should avoid.
While tinned soups are easy to prepare especially when you need to save time or you are not feeling well, they are filled with sodium. The same goes for canned and packaged broths and stocks.
Nutritionists at Healthline say some soups can have almost 900mg of sodium in just one serving, which is typically a 1/2 cup.
The site states: “If you consume the entire can, you’ll be taking in 2,225mg of sodium. Low-sodium and reduced-sodium options are available.
“But a better option is to keep the salt in check by making your own soup from a low-sodium recipe.”
According to the charity, this hidden salt accounts for around 75 per cent of the salt we eat – only 25 per cent comes from the salt we add while cooking or at the table.
Frozen pizza is another food that should be avoided.
The site explains: “All pizzas can be bad for people watching their sodium intake. The combination of cheese, cured meats, tomato sauce, and crust adds up to a lot of sodium. But frozen pizza is especially dangerous for people with hypertension.
“To maintain flavour in the pizza once it’s been cooked, manufacturers often add a lot of salt. One serving of a frozen cheese or meat-and-cheese pizza can contain as much as 982 mg of sodium, sometimes even more. The thicker the crust and the most toppings you have, the higher your sodium number will climb.”
What other factors can put you at risk of hypertension?
The NHS lists eight other factors; age (the risk of developing high blood pressure increases as you get older), a family history of high blood pressure, being of African or Caribbean origin, a lack of exercise and being overweight or obese.
Regularly drinking large amounts of alcohol, smoking and long-term sleep deprivation can also be risk factors.
Certain foods could help to lower your risk of hypertension. Nutritionist Dr Josh Axe suggests eating coriander.
HIGH blood pressure symptoms range from a severe headache to chest pain, but a lot of them will go unnoticed. Left untreated it can lead to more serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes. What you eat can affect high blood pressure, and experts urge people to avoid eating foods with high salt levels, such as tinned soup.![]()
A new review of evidence found that nutritional labelling on menus may reduce a person’s calorie intake.
Researchers found that labelling on menus in restaurants led to a reduction of 47 calories purchased.
Assuming an average meal of 600 kcal, labelling on menus would reduce the number of calories purchased per meal by 7.8 per cent, they said.
But the authors stressed that the quality of evidence reviewed was “low” and they were only “tentatively” suggesting that nutritional labelling on menus in restaurants could be used as part of a wider set of measures to tackle obesity.
They called for more high quality evidence to strengthen the findings.
The Obesity Health Alliance, a coalition of 40 health bodies and charities, said the study showed that clear labelling helps empower people to make informed choices about the food they eat.
It added that restaurant food “too often” can be a large portion “packed with hidden ingredients”.
Researchers, who examined a total of 28 studies on food labelling, said they were unable to reach conclusions about the effect of labelling on calories purchased from grocery stores or vending machines because the evidence was limited.
They called for more research to address the “dearth of evidence” from grocery stores and vending machines and more studies to confirm the findings on restaurant menus.
The Review’s lead author, professor Theresa Marteau, director of the Behaviour and Health Research Unit at the University of Cambridge, said: “This evidence suggests that using nutritional labelling could help reduce calorie intake and make a useful impact as part of a wider set of measures aimed at tackling obesity.
“There is no ‘magic bullet’ to solve the obesity problem, so while calorie labelling may help, other measures to reduce calorie intake are also needed.“
Caroline Cerny, Obesity Health Alliance lead, said: “Too often food in restaurants or cafes can be a large portion size and packed with hidden ingredients such as salt or sugar so it’s very easy to eat more calories than you need.
“It makes sense that when we know the nutritional content of the food we’re eating, the more likely it is that we’ll make healthier choices.
“This important research shows that clear labelling of the food we eat out of home, as is increasingly on display on supermarket products, is an important step to empowering people to make informed choices when it comes to eating.”
When it comes to eating healthier or attempting to lose weight, it can be overwhelming to know what to focus on. Some “experts” tell you to focus on carbs, others sugar, and some calories. When looking at the nutrition label on food packaging, the easiest thing to focus on, and often the largest, boldest item, is the calorie count. It seems logical to think that lower calorie foods equal healthy foods, but that’s not always true.
If you focus strictly on how many/few calories you’re intaking, you may be cheating yourself out of important protein your body needs. When you cheat yourself out of calories, your body will use the protein you do eat for energy rather than applying it toward building muscle, improving immunity, and aiding in the health of your hair, skin and nails.[1]
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), adult women and men should aim to consume 46g to 56g of protein per day, respectively. Those individuals who are especially physically active may require more.[2]
Before you get too excited about an excuse to eat more calories, here’s the catch: when focusing on intaking the perfect calorie amount, you may inadvertently intake more carbohydrates than you need.
Carbs come in a variety of forms. Some are complex which break down in such a way that assist in workout and your overall health. Unfortunately, most of the yummy, carb-filled foods we tend to reach for such as pasta, potato chips and doughnuts are bad carbs. They also tend to be high in calories. But before you think that high calories equals to high carbs and the decision making is simple, think again.[3] Low calorie foods like sweet potatoes and oats are high in carbs which are more than your body needs.
Instead of getting hung up on total calories, a simple way to screen all the options you see in a day to look at the ratio of carbs to protein. A small increase in protein intake along with slightly fewer calories help us to be healthier. A 2007 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that increasing protein intake and limiting carb consumption can help overweight individuals reduce calories to achieve successful (and healthy) weight loss.
Maintaining a better balance of carbohydrates to protein will give you sufficient energy while improving your health. Set a goal of eating foods that have a ratio of one gram of carbs for every one gram of protein can ensure that you are not overloading on carbs but are intaking enough protein.
Avoid foods . Most chips and cereals have a 10 to 1 carbs-to-protein ratio, avoid them. In fact, avoid foods with a ratio higher than 5 to 1 carbs to protein.
Before you start grabbing carb-filled items and using this ratio as an excuse, remember to focus on the healthy sources of calories, carbs and protein. If you aren’t sure where to start, stock your fridge and pantry with lean meats like fish, poultry, eggs, cottage cheese and tofu. Nuts, seeds, grains and yogurt are great examples of snacks that will help you stick to your goals, too.
Not only will you lose weight, but you’ll feel better with more energy. Your body will be so grateful to you.
It may feel overwhelming to stop focusing on calories and shift your attention to carbs and protein, but with a well stocked kitchen, it will be easier than you think. As it stands now, your intense focus on calories equating to health can cheat you out of the real nutrition your body needs. So don’t go another day depriving your body of what it truly needs.

The festive season is in full swing and that means pulling on those jeans after eating a handful of mince pies; it might be a tight squeeze.
But how safe are very low calorie diets – of which the most popular is the liquid-only diet?
Liquid diets replace some or all food with drinks – they can come in various forms but by far the most popular are meal replacement packages or juice cleanses.
Infamous meal replacement shakes tend to be low in calories – much lower than typical meals.
However, companies who sell these shakes will usually have designed the packages to combine all the nutrients your body needs to function.
And studies have shown that combining a meal replacement shake with a balanced diet can bring about healthy weight loss in adults.
In comparison, juice cleanses and detoxes may not contain all the nutrients a person needs for a healthy life.
As nice as they may taste, blended fruits and vegetables with nothing additional added to the mix will not create a well-balanced nutritious meal.
A recent study in Sweden compared people undertaking very-low-calorie diets – typically less than 800 kcal per day – to those on a ‘commercial weight loss program’.
Published on the US National Library of Medicine, the authors state they looked into the concern that exists regarding gallstones as an adverse event of very-low-calorie diets.
Gallstones can cause sudden, severe abdominal pain that isn’t relieved when you go to the toilet, pass wind or are sick.
The Swedish researchers wanted to assess the risk of gallstones requiring hospital care in a commercial weight loss program using very low calorie diet [VLCD ]or low-calorie diet [LCD].
The result? It reads: “The risk of symptomatic gallstones requiring hospitalisation or cholecystectomy, albeit low, was 3-fold greater with VLCD than LCD during the 1-year commercial weight loss program.”
What causes gallstones? The NHS says the condition is thought to be caused by an imbalance in the chemical make-up of bile inside the gallbladder.
If you’ve recently lost weight, are overweight or obese or female you are more susceptible to the condition.
Are smoothies healthy or not? Detoxes and cleanse programs are not meant to be undertaken for long periods of time – and any that claim to rid the body of ‘toxins’ should be treated with caution.
The human body cleanses itself through the liver function, feces, urine and sweat. There is little evidence that detox diets remove any toxins.
However, replacing some meals with liquid meal replacements can promote weight loss – if you are considering this it’s best to speak to your GP.
LOW calorie drinks may hinder weight loss and could even make you fatter, according to a study.![]()
SCIENTISTS have claimed that maintaining a low calorie diet is crucial to staying young after studying how the human body clock changes with age.![]()
The research team believes that avoiding high calorie foods makes the metabolism perform like that of a younger person.
Professor Paolo SassoneCorsi, who led the University of California Irvine study in the US, said the change takes place because older cells process energy “inefficiently”.
But his laboratory tests on mice at different stages of their life suggested the deterioration can be offset if the subject’s calorie intake is controlled.
Writing in the science journal Cell he said: “This mechanism works great in a young animal, but it basically shuts off in an old mouse.
“In fact caloric restriction works by rejuvenating the biological clock in a most powerful way.”
Prof Sassone-Corsi, director of the university’s Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism, said: “In this context, a good clock meant good ageing.”
His team set out to study how ageing affects the body clock’s control of metabolism by testing liver and tissue samples from two groups of mice at six months and 18 months old.
They found that the animals fed a diet with 30 per cent fewer calories for six months, did not experience the same age-related decline in energy processing.
The California team’s results were supported by a separate study, also reported in Cell, by academics from the Barcelona Institute For Research.
By studying the effects on the stem cells of the animals they too found that a low calorie diet conserved most of the rhythmic functions of youth.
Professor Salvador Aznar Benitah, who co-led the Spanish study, said: “The low calorie diet greatly contributes to preventing the effects of physiological ageing.
“Eating less appears to prevent tissue ageing and, therefore, prevent stem cells from reprogramming their circadian activities.”
