Randall finishes off Tuesday’s This Is Us with some hard-won peace: Finally, he — and we — know exactly why his birth mother, Laurel, never tried to find him.
In short: Her overdose following his birth led to her going to jail for five years, after which an overwhelming sense of shame kept her from searching for her son. (For a more detailed explanation, read our recap of the episode.)
In an interview Tuesday, series star Sterling K. Brown told TVLine that Randall has spent years circling the same questions: Was he loved? And if so, why was he given up? “People who love you don’t do that sort of thing,” the Emmy winner said. As such, Laurel’s story only mattered to Randall in relation to how it affected him on a personal level.
But in this week’s hour, after having a cathartic vision of his mother in the lake behind her house, “That clicks in his head,” Brown added. “‘I have been, to a certain extent, selfish in terms of how I thought about this woman. And now I just need to recognize and appreciate all that she has gone through to be where she is.’”
Read on for more of Brown’s thoughts on the episode, including what it might mean for Randall and Kevin’s ongoing argument, as well as the decision process behind Randall’s baring his soul and… other things.
TVLINE | You hear that Randall is going to find out all about his mom and then he’s going to have this moment of catharsis. What was your first take?
When Dan [Fogelman, series creator] first pitched that his mom is still alive, my first thought is, “Alright: Are we jumping the shark? Are we still maintaining the integrity of this whole thing?” He was like, “She’s not alive, but what happened was we thought that she OD’d, but she didn’t.” I was like, “OK. So then how come she hasn’t come to see me? If she’s been alive and she had this child, then why did she not make her presence known in my life?” and then they answered that question. There was a series of things that I was like, “Alright, does this make sense? Does this track?” And it all checked out. I should never doubt Dan. And shout out to Kay [Oyegun] and Eboni [Freeman] for writing a great episode, and to Kay for directing it, as well.
There was an interesting thing for me, and I don’t think this is acutely stated in the episode. But that moment of release for Randall, and the idea that he had this encounter with his mom in the lake — we’re not an overtly religious show, but it has spiritual overtones. And Randall primarily is a man of science, right? And not so much a man of faith. But this instance, because he lives with anxiety and whatnot, and I do believe to a certain extent beyond just the chemical level, it’s hard for anxiety and faith to exist in the same space. So for him to have this recognition that this woman actually loved me, that I was the product of two people who loved me but circumstances conspired in such a way that they weren’t able to share their love with me in a direct manner? I’m OK with that.
TVLINE | Beth remarks that there’s a lightness in him at the end of the episode. Moving forward, how will we see this epiphany manifest in the rest of his life?
Good question. So the first catalyst really is a step toward reconciliation with his brother, and seeing how not being able to make peace with your past and having shame or frustration can keep people from being connected who should be connected to one another. Laurel saw that in Hai and in her inability to make peace with her parents before passing away. [Randall] desperately loves Kevin. And he knows, and his brother knows, too, that they said just some sh—y, sh—y things to each other. But hopefully, that doesn’t have to define their relationship in perpetuity. The recognition that forgiveness is essential for any relationship to persevere is firmly imprinted on him by virtue of this experience…
My hope is that he learns to let go. To borrow a phrase from the Black community, and spirituality — Christianity, specifically — to “Let go and let God.” To recognize that the fallacy of control is something you have to willingly relinquish in order to actually be able to enjoy the moment, to live free. There’s moments that I watch in the episode, there’s echoings of Bible verses from his maternal grandfather to his mom and then conversations between his great-aunt and his mom in terms of how to let go. Ultimately, that moment of being in the lake and just — it is a scream, but it’s a big exhale. It’s like “I don’t have to have the answer in order to be OK.” I feel like, for Randall, so much of his being OK is wrapped up in “What do I do? How do I respond? How do I fix?” I don’t have to have the answer in order to be OK. I would like to see that incorporated into him as we move into the next phase of the show.
TVLINE | I’m going to follow up your very well-thought-out answer with a very silly question: For a 9 o’clock network show, when Randall strips down to get into the water, we see a bit more than usual. Were you like, “Yes! This is what he would do!” or was there any thought of, “Um, I’m not sure about this?”
That was an interesting conversation. Kay had called me up earlier in the season and was like, “So, we’re planning Episode 6, and we have this sort of baptismal thing we’re trying to accomplish, and I was thinking we’ll have you go down to your boxers and into the water. But Dan was thinking that maybe, if you were comfortable with it, you could just enter into it in your birthday suit.” I thought about it more from a spiritual aspect, of a rebirth or cleansing and not having anything stand between me and that. And I was like, “That makes sense.”
Now, let me say this, too, right? When I saw it, I was like, “That is a bit of cake.” [Laughs] More than I anticipated seeing in the primetime, 9 o’clock slot on the TV. I guess it is the shadow of the cake, when you really check it out. And I will gladly thank Peloton for assisting and augmenting.

“They just happen to be quite slim,” he continued, to which Michelle said: “Well, I don’t actually agree with that.”
On why she thinks the slimmer frame could be dangerous, the entrepreneur said: “That’s the first time I’ve not agreed with you but these model, you might see they to the gym, but do they sit there and do they eat as much as we all eat?
“They look healthy, don’t they?” Piers asked as he tried to understand the guest’s point of view.
“You don’t look a them and think they look unwell or unhealthy. They all look very healthy,” he continued.

It all unfolded as Amanda Holden and Rylan took up the presenting duties today on ITV magazine show This Morning.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge was determined to show off her own unique talent after the pair had discussed opera-singing cake-eating act Sarah Llewllyn.
“It’s not that unique that act, I can do that every night at home,” Amanda announced.
Confessing she could do a headstand while eating cake, Amanda then set about doing so live on the set.
Tossing the pillow away that she’d been given for comfort, Amanda flung her legs up in the air as Rylan held up her skirt to protect her modesty.
The mother-of-two then tucked into a yellow cake with aplomb as she displayed her impressive talent while Rylan held her legs.
After a few seconds Rylan asked: “Do you wanna get down?”
But Amanda wasn’t having any of it: “No, I’m going to have one more bite.”
Clearly getting into the act, Amanda exclaimed: “Kick it to me! Kick the cake to me Rylan.”
Her co-host then booted the confection straight into Amanda’s face.
Aghast, Rylan questioned: “Are you alright? She’s fine.”
Amanda declared: “It’s really nice, it’s like a butter frosting.”
When the show returned from a advert break, Amanda announced she had been “sponged off” behind-the-scenes.
Although, she did take a moment to berate Rylan for the force of his kick.
She told Rylan: “You literally kicked the sponge in my face.”
Those watching at home were amused by the bizarre moment and took to Twitter to comment.
“Didn’t think I would ever see Rylan holding Amanda’s legs while eating cake upside down #ThisMorning,” one wrote.
While another exclaimed: “YESSSS AMANDA DO A HEADSTAND #ThisMorning.”
“Why am I watching Rylan push Amanda Holden’s face into a cake while she’s in a handstand #ThisMorning,” a third questioned.
“Amanda Holden doing a headstand while eating cake like a PRO #ThisMorning,” a fourth added.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.

A good cake pan can make or break your baking experience. If you decide to skimp on bakeware, you might end up with a pan that rusts, warps, or burns the batter you carefully prepared. On the other hand, when you buy one of the many excellent cake pans in our guide, you can look like a pro with minimal effort. For me, the right pans have made baking with my preschooler that much more enjoyable for both of us.
In this guide, we help you find the best cake pan, whether it’s round, square, or rectangular. There are a wide variety of cake pans, but for the purposes of this guide, we are going to focus on traditional, flat-bottomed, high-sided metal pans. So here, we will not cover Bundt pans, springform pans, baking sheets, baking dishes, or muffin tins — You’ll have to check out our other guides for those pieces of bakeware.
What to Look for in Cake Pans
The best cake pans are made of metal, specifically aluminum or aluminized steel. Aluminum is the best material for baking the perfect cake because it distributes heat quickly and evenly. When it is paired with steel, you get pans that are durable and resistant to warping or denting. This is particularly important if you want to avoid leaning layer cakes or misshapen sheet cakes.
You can bake cakes in glass or ceramic dishes, but they do not conduct heat as well, and most recipes assume you are going to use metal so your baking times may be off. Silicone bakeware has grown in popularity in recent years, and there are instances where it is helpful. However, silicone tends not to brown cake on the outside. Plus, it is difficult to maneuver when full of batter.
Therefore, metal is your best option. Depending on who you talk to, either a lighter colored or darker colored cake pan is better. In general, the darker a pan is the darker the browning of the cake will be. I prefer a lighter, golden brown cake so I mostly have lighter-color pans in my kitchen, but you may prefer to go darker.
Lastly, if you are an experienced baker or just strive for perfection, choose a cake pan with straight sides, as opposed to a pan that flares out as it gets closer to the rim. Straight sides produce more precisely-shaped cakes, which will make your frosting and decorating work go more smoothly.
While researching the best cake pans, we examined the reviews and ratings of hundreds of buyers and experts. The cake pans featured in the slides below produce superbly-browned foods, are built to last a lifetime, and they make it easier to create perfectly-shaped cakes.
Here are our top picks for the best cake pans:
USA Pan Bakeware
The USA Pan Bakeware Round Cake Pan is unique because the bottom has a fluted or corrugated design. This has a few of benefits. First, it adds extra strength to the pan to keep it from warping. Secondly, it enhances the nonstick properties. Plus, it allows for increased airflow and heat distribution.
This pan is also made of heavy-gauge aluminized steel, which is incredibly durable. The aluminized steel is covered with Americoat Plus, a silicone nonstick coating. Americoat tends to be easy to clean, easy to use, and it releases cakes effortlessly. You can get the pan in three sizes: 8 inches in diameter by 2.25 inches high, 9 inches in diameter by 2.25 inches high, or 10 inches in diameter by 2.25 inches high. USA Pan backs the quality of this pan with a limited lifetime warranty.
The Wirecutter also chose the USA Pan Bakeware Round Cake Pan as the best cake pan available. The reviewer recommended this model because of its durability, even heat distribution, and its truly nonstick corrugated bottom. In her tests, she found that even sticky sugar came off the pan easily. Several other expert sites recommend the USA Pan, including Cream of the West, Bake from Scratch, and Kitchen Folks.
About 89% of the people who reviewed the USA Pan Round Cake Pan on Amazon gave it five stars. The two most helpful reviews have nothing but positive things to say about this pan. Both point out that there is no need to grease the pan. It releases baked goods without leaving a single crumb behind.
Buyer Berni warns against washing the pan if rust is a concern. Instead, wipe it down with a paper towel. If you do wash the pan, you might consider putting it in a warm oven afterward to dry it out completely.
Pros: Bakes evenly, incredibly nonstick, made in the USA, lifetime warranty
Cons: Some complaints of rusting
Calphalon
The Calphalon Classic Square Cake Pan stands out from the competition because of its folded corner design and straight sides which allow for precise baked goods.
The pan is 8 by 8 by 2 inches and it’s made of heavy-gauge aluminized steel for rust resistance. The surface is nonstick and dishwasher safe for easy cleanup. The Calphalon cake pan is oven safe up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, but you should avoid using it under the broiler or putting it in the freezer. Calphalon backs the quality of the pan with a lifetime warranty.
Cook’s Illustrated recommends the Calphalon Classic Nonstick Bakeware 8-Inch Square Cake Pan because it did an excellent job of baking cornbread and crumb cake. However, the reviewer did not rate it the best cake pan because the dark surface tended to produce darker results.
The Wirecutter recommends this cake pan as well as its rectangular cousin to people who are turned off by the USA Pan’s corrugated design. The reviewer notes that the pan bakes cakes with perfect corners and straight sides. Plus, the cakes are released cleanly. But, the reviewer also mentions that baked goods turn out darker than what you might get with lighter-colored pans.
Of the 47 reviews of the Calphalon Classic Square Cake Pan on Amazon, only two are critical. City Girl, the most helpful critical reviewer, gave the pan three stars because she had a hard time cleaning the baked-on food out of the corners. The most helpful positive reviewer also had difficulties cleaning the corners. However, the buyer found the non-stick surface, hefty metal construction, and nice square corners and sides made up for this deficiency.
Pros: Non-stick, made of durable aluminized steel, straight sides, lifetime warranty
Cons: Bakes cakes darker than lighter-colored pans, hard to clean the corners
Chicago Metallic
Yes, you can use a cake pan to make pizza. And, it’s only fitting that the Chicago Metallic Professional Non-Stick Round Cake Pan is excellent for making Chicago-style pizza. As with the previous options on our guide, the Professional is made of aluminized steel, which helps with even baking.
The non-stick surface is silicone based, which is unaffected by high temperatures and makes clean up a snap. Though Chicago Metallic recommends handwashing this pan, it is dishwasher safe. The overall dimensions are 9 inches in diameter by 2 inches deep. And, it is backed by a lifetime warranty.
Both Kitchen Folks and Cook’s Illustrated recommend the Chicago Metallic Non-Stick Round Cake Pan. The reviewer at Cook’s Illustrated found that a lot of heat was radiated by the dark finish. This caused cake edges to set too quickly, which resulted in doming in the center. However, it released baked goods perfectly and browned cinnamon buns and pizzas nicely.
About 97% of the reviews of the Chicago Metallic Professional Non-Stick Round Cake Pan on Amazon are positive, and there are no one- or two-star ratings. The most helpful reviewer notes that the pan is solid, heavy-duty, and it bakes evenly. However, the buyer only gave the pan three stars because the manufacturer’s name is embossed on the bottom of the pan. This made the food more likely to stick, and the pan was a little harder to clean. Marketing photos of the pan do not show the embossing, but buyer photos clearly show it.
Pros: Excellent for pizza, effective non-stick coating, lifetime warranty
Cons: Dark finish causes cake edges to cook too quickly

The royal wedding countdown is officially on with just one day to go until the big event.
Prince Harry, 33, and Meghan Markle, 36, will marry tomorrow at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in front of 600 friends and family.
A number of details are yet to be revealed, such as who will make Meghan’s bridal gown, as well as who will walk her down the aisle after it emerged her father Thomas Markle will not be attending his daughter’s wedding.
Yet what was revealed earlier this year was who would bake the famous wedding cake.
London baker Claire Ptak, who Meghan previously interviewed on her lifestyle blog The Tig, has taken the honoured role.
New pictures have revealed the cake being created by Claire herself.
As the owner of Violet Bakery in Hackney, East London, the stages of the cake show the work being put into it.
It will be a lemon and elderflower cake, with the base currently sitting with four layers.
The cake will then be covered in frosting, ready for decorations.
Breaking away from traditional fruit cake options, Kensington Palace confirmed that the cake would be “covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers”.
Claire previously took to Instagram to show the stages of the cake’s preparation.
She posted an image of six large crates that contained fresh lemons which would be used in the cake.
She wrote: “And so it begins” to capture the image.
The baker previously spoke out about how pleased she was to be chosen for the task.
She said: “I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms Markle’s wedding cake.”
Growing up in Inverness, California, Ms Ptak worked for three years as a pastry cook at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California.
She then became a pastry chef for chef Alice Waters before moving to London, where she interned at a number of restaurants.
She then opened her own organic bakery in Hackey, which is where she currently works.
Could Meghan and Harry’s cake not even get eaten at the royal wedding?
Kate and William’s wedding cake baker revealed how her own version didn’t get eaten and was just used to display.
Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, are due to marry in just 33 days time at Windsor Castle.
Kensington Palace has recently revealed that preparation is well underway for the grand event with advice for those planning to travel to watch the big day.
Elements of the big day have recently been revealed, such as who will bake the wedding cake, who will make the flower arrangements and who will be the photographer.
The cake maker is to be Claire Ptak, a London based baker who Meghan previously interviewed on The Tig.
Yet her cake may not even get eaten by the guests after all.
The wedding cake is to be a lemon and elderflower cake with fresh flowers used for decoration.
Whilst it sounds delicious, it may not get eaten during the big day by those attending.
Fiona Cairns created Kate and William’s eight-tier wedding cake in 2011, and revealed some of the secrets of the big day.
One of those was that no-one ate the large cake after it was created at the royal wedding.
She told Town and Country: “The actual cake itself, which went on display, was not served at the wedding.”
After its creation, which took over two days, the £56,000 cake was then cut into pieces to be given for breakfast.
Over 600 slices were given, and then an additional 4,000 slices were sent out as gifts.
They were packaged in Prince of Wales tins when they were delivered.
But how much would a slice of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding cake cost?
In 2011, a slice of the fruitcake sold for nearly £6,000 at Julien’s Auction in California.
Harry and Meghan are expected to follow in the trend of giving the cake as a gift, with an insider revealing a second fruit cake will also be at the wedding.
The source told Express.co.uk: “The fruit cake will be cut into pieces and into little presentation boxes for all staff involved with the wedding. The other piece they normally keep for the honeymoon.”
Anyone wanting to try Meghan and Harry’s cake would have to fork out thousands, with Brides.com estimating it to coming to a whopping £49,150.
Yet Iceland have created a dupe for just £8, with a lemon and elderflower cake on offer with beautiful flowers adorning it.
Those who want to try the two-tiered buttercream sponge will have to be quick – it is only being sold from May 14 for one week.

Royal wedding celebrations like that of Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, traditionally include an iced fruit cake.
Now Express.co.uk can exclusively reveal the royal couple will have a fruit cake like the Queen, 91, and Kate Middleton, 36.
This will be in addition to the couple’s more modern wedding cake by Claire Ptak, which was announced earlier this week.
“There will be a iced fruit cake as well as the lemon and elderflower,” a palace insider revealed.
“The fruit cake will be cut into pieces and into little presentation boxes for all staff involved with the wedding.”
But not all of the leftover cake will be given away, said the insider: “The other piece they normally keep for the honeymoon,” he explained of royal wedding protocol.
It is unknown whether the couple will spend as much on their fruit cake as Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding cake did when they married in 2011.
The royal couple’s eight tier fruit cake, which was covered in icing flowers, was rumoured to cost £56,000.
The main version of Meghan and Harry’s wedding cake will be created by pastry chef and owner if Violet Cakes Claire Ptak.
The couple’s choice of a lemon elderflower cake decorated with fresh flowers was announced in a tweet by the official Kensington Palace Twitter account.
The announcement read: “For their wedding cake Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle have chosen pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of the London-based bakery @violetcakes.
“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.”
Express.co.uk contacted Kensington Palace for comment, who denied the claim of a second cake. A representative said of Meghan and Harry’s wedding: “They will have one cake as per the press release.”
Some of Meghan Markle’s family have not received a royal wedding invitation, it was revealed today on Good Morning Britain.
Two of Meghan’s relatives have spoken about her upcoming nuptials, and revealed they have not been invited.
Tyler Dooley, her nephew, and Tracey Dooley, her sister-in-law, said an invite has yet to reach them, although they are not sure if one will ever be forthcoming.
Tracy said: “We’ve not got anything yet, at this point who knows. This all goes back to Meghan, ultimately it’s her day it’s her happiness and we’ve been here from the very beginning her whole life always rooting her on.”
