-The coupe and cabriolet versions of the Mercedes-Benz C-class and the Mercedes-AMG C43 have come due for their mid-cycle facelift, examples of which will grace the Mercedes stand at the New York auto show later this month. You will be forgiven if you don’t quite see the difference, because the changes are modest. Mercedes claims the models are—what else—”sportier.” READ MORE ››

Sport-utility vehicles are practical and popular; convertibles are fun. So why not combine the two? It sounds like a brilliant idea but, aside from true off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler, the concept has rarely been successful. Nissan’s Murano CrossCabriolet was laughed out of showrooms; more recently, Land Rover decided to add a convertible version of the Range Rover Evoque, which mostly served to reveal that a fixed roof is central to that model’s previously unquestioned design acumen. The idea also was explored by engineering house and contractor Karmann back in 2005 with the unfortunately named SUC concept (its name stands for Sport Utility Cabriolet).
–
Now Volkswagen is picking up the baton, announcing it will build a convertible version of its Europe-market T-Roc compact SUV.
–
Based on the Golf, the T-Roc plays a major role in the company’s future-product strategy. Volkswagen, after all, is “developing into an SUV brand,” according to brand chief Herbert Diess. And indeed, launching a T-Roc cabriolet means there won’t be a Golf cabriolet again.
–
The sketch supplied by VW reveals that the T-Roc cabriolet will be a two-door with a short tail, will feature a fabric top, and will have metal-covered or at least metal-colored A-pillars, much like the Audi A5 cabriolet.
–
–
–
–
–
Interestingly, it will be assembled alongside the first-gen Tiguan and the Porsche Cayman in VW’s Osnabrück, Germany, plant. That’s the former Karmann factory, which VW took over after Karmann folded in 2010. Thus, the T-Roc cabriolet could be considered the spiritual successor of the Karmann-assembled Golf cabrio, not to mention the Karmann Ghia and of course, the SUC.

The vast chasm between “want” and “need” is a space littered with high-cost products, be they high-performance automobiles or super-premium ice cream. While the sclerotic effects of 55 percent (or 11 grams) of the daily recommended dosage of saturated fat in one serving of Häagen-Dazs Chubby Hubby is a moderated health risk, so too can be the 503hp (375kW) in the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Cabrio after one 4.0-second blast to 60 mph. Also, considering that the very first C-Class AMG model ever offered in the US market 22 years ago belted out a whopping 276hp (206kW) from its 3.6-liter inline-6, power is a relative thing.
That 4.0-liter engine pumps two turbos’ worth of pressure into eight cylinders to net its embarrassment of riches. (Non-S C63 models get by with a mere 469hp, or 350 kW.) Those turbos are nestled in the valley of the engine’s V, as on BMW’s current crop of turbocharged V8s and Audi’s V-type engines. This shortens the plumbing, reduces the possibility of lag, and also helps get the turbos hotter (which helps produce boost quicker).

As its $ 315,000 Business Lounge V-class and “ultimate city sports car” have displayed, Brabus is not a company that is capable of small-scale thinking. It’s go big or get the hell out of Bottrop. The most recent example is the Brabus Rocket 900 Cabrio, an open-top version of the firm’s extreme S65 AMG coupe that we saw early last year. Altering one of the most powerful production vehicles on the planet might seem outrageous, but that’s exactly the point: to step over the line of a reasonable purpose.
–
The masterminds at AMG already have a beast in their stable with the S65 convertible. Their twin-turbo V-12 powerplants churn out a claimed 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. But Brabus makes that output look like peanuts. After extensive component upgrades and tuning, the Rocket 900 Cabrio claims 888 horsepower and 1106 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm, although it’s electronically limited to 885 lb-ft.
–
–
Brabus started the aftermarket customization process by enlarging the V-12’s displacement from 366 to 384 cubic inches, or from 6.0 liters to 6.3 liters. A billet-steel crankshaft provides a longer stroke, while billet-steel connecting rods push special forged pistons into cylinders that have been bored out. Beefier turbochargers provide more boost, and specialized exhaust manifolds, a high-performance exhaust, larger downpipes, and free-flow catalysts enhance the breathing. The intake has also been revised with a Brabus-developed module and a new intake manifold with a different air filter box to increase airflow at the same time as cooling it.
–
All of this extra power is paired with a heartier seven-speed automatic transmission that puts power squarely on the rear wheels with the help of a limited-slip differential that can lock up to 40 percent. Brabus claims the Rocket will launch from zero to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and is capable of 217 mph, which, if true, could save owners a step in the morning by cleansing their faces of dirt via open-top wind purification.
–
–
In addition to the all-important power-pumping components, the 900 Cabrio boasts a bunch of exterior and interior embellishments of the kind we’ve come to expect from Brabus. It has 21-inch forged wheels (9.0 inches up front, 10.5 inches in the rear), with 22-inchers available as an option, and high-performance Continental tires. Buyers can choose between matte or gloss coating over the visible carbon-fiber bodywork, and the kit adds a front spoiler and uses carbon fiber to build the intake surrounds, mirror caps, rear diffuser, and trunklid spoiler. The car was lowered 0.6 inch to complete the sportier look.

Inside, Brabus created parts for its interpretation of a classier and sportier cabin. The doorsill scuff plates have color-changing backlighting, and the paddle shifters, pedals, and door pins are now aluminum. Although completely customizable with different colors and materials, the show car has two-tone Mondial Vanilla and Mondial Black leather with contrast stitching. The interior trim has been replaced with open-pore black-ash wood inlays, but that can be swapped for other woods or materials—perhaps more carbon fiber. What the customer wants, the customer gets. That tailored specification comes at a high cost, we’re sure, but Brabus did not release an official price for this vehicle. Perhaps the company will be more forthcoming when the car makes its debut at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show.

The Frankfurt auto show is coming up next month, and it seems Mercedes will be showing an updated S-Class cabriolet and coupe. We know this thanks to a new teaser trailer from the company showing off the cabrio and its fancy new OLED taillights.
The video shows off the left rear lamp in close detail, the better to highlight all 33 individual OLED elements. They’re arranged in three rows, and you can see how the company took advantage of the thin profile of OLEDs in how the elements overlap each other and curve around the lamp. The company says each one is individually controllable, and the video demonstrates how they can light up in sequence. The obvious way to showcase in normal use would be as sequential turn signals like on the Mustang and Audi A4, among others, but Mercedes may have something else in mind, since the car also has traditional amber turn signals.
Aside from the fancy new taillights, earlier spy shots tell us that the front and rear bumpers have been very mildly revised. Based on what we know from the revised S-Class sedan, we would expect the base model coupe and cabrio to now feature the twin-turbo, 463-horsepower 4.0-liter V8 instead of the current 4.7-liter model. The S63 will probably also get the same twin-scroll twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 as the sedan with 603 horsepower. The S65 V12 model will probably see no mechanical changes. And of course, keep an eye out for ever more sophisticated semi-autonomous technology.

Think of the 2017 Smart Fortwo cabriolet as the vehicular equivalent of a raccoon. Both the city car and the masked mammal can be cute and strangely endearing, but both are best avoided entirely. READ MORE ››

Much the same could be said of the Mercedes-Benz urban mobility subsidiary known as Smart. The company has spent almost 10 years in the American market now, building and attempting to sell an unerringly similar recipe of small, uncomfortable, homely, cheap, uninspired, inefficient, overpriced, subpar, fun-colored, rear-engine city vehicles – and has not gained an iota of traction. With all of the power and glory of the three-pointed star behind it, the brand last year ranked in the bottom three of total sales, just above Alfa Romeo, which had no cars to sell, and Bentley, which prides itself on selling as few cars as possible. Sales for 2016 were down 17 percent. They’re down nearly 20 percent more from there thus far in 2017. Alfa Romeo has sold more cars.

Yet, instead of giving up and going away, the brand has decided to stick around for a few more rounds. One would think that this might demonstrate a willingness to learn from its big mistakes, which include making cars that are worse than anything in or around the their price or size segment – including a lot of great cars like the Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta. And Smart’s big move — an announcement that, starting in 2018, it will sell only pure electric vehicles in the States — indicates some sense of prescience and topicality.
The EV market is maturing and growing, moving out from early adopters to fast followers and perhaps even beginning to trickle down into the mainstream, so the time seems ripe to jump on the bandwagon. And Mercedes is investing heavily in electric power, planning to develop a full range of vehicles under its EQ sub-brand, so Smart can clearly capitalize on some of that knowhow.
Unfortunately, after having spent an afternoon in Switzerland test driving the first of these vehicles to be released in America, the 2017 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive Cabrio, we can attest to the fact that the brand has not learned anything, but simply converted their previous losing formula to run on electricity.

Which is to say that brand is still making terrible cars that are worse than just about anything in or around their price and size segment, including a lot of great cars like the Volkswagen e-Golf, Fiat 500e, and Nissan Leaf. Saying that a vehicle is worse than a Nissan Leaf is really saying something.
The main problem with the Smart is that it is, on nearly every level, less than meets the eye, which is difficult for a car that is only 9 feet long. The body is covered in cheap injection-molded panels that look like they fell off the swim toys in a rehabilitative physical therapy pool. This theme carries over to the inside – inasmuch as there is an inside, which there really isn’t, just two barstools set up inside a tragic universe of mismatched petrochemical schmutz. The dashboard is covered in a mesh fabric made from discarded black nylon socks. The speedometer is made from the top half of a Fisher Price construction helmet.
The infotainment interface is neither informative nor entertaining, and appears to consist of a thin film of Saran Wrap surrounding infuriating incompetence. Go ahead, ask it how to get out of Geneva. It will send you in an endless loop up and down one corner of the lake, zoom out infinitely to show you your position in approximate relation to Mars, and then fritz out uncontrollably until you finally relent and open Google Maps on your phone.

Did we mention that the car is slower, less spacious, and more expensive than any of its competitors? 60 mph arrives in nearly 12 seconds. It has only two seats, and less cargo room than a Speedo worn by Kevin James. We only drove the $ 28,000 convertible, but there’s a $ 24,000 coupe as well. It can travel only 70 miles on a charge.
With its battery pack down low and its motor over the rear wheels, the Fortwo seems far more stable than the rollerskating waiter is actually is. It does have one advantage, if you don’t count the ability to elicit sympathy from other drivers: It has an extremely tight turning radius.
This is practical, not only because the navigation system forks up so frequently that you will constantly find yourself pulling U-turns (we made five in an hour), but because if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of entering a Smart dealership, you can use this capacity to turn around immediately. You’ve got nothing to prove by taking it on the chin endlessly from a Fortwo ED. Don’t be a Wepner: Tap out and nurse your wounds in, well, anything else.

Think of Brabus as the Emeril Lagasse of the Mercedes-Benz tuning world. Brabus takes the German manufacturer’s products and kicks them up a notch, to borrow the chef’s favorite expression. The latest Mercedes model to get the Brabus treatment is the Mercedes-AMG C63 S convertible. Dubbed the Brabus 650 cabrio, the two-door droptop adds more spice to what is already a pretty hot factory offering.
–
The 503-hp C63 S is already a blindingly quick car. In our testing, the cloth-topped machine pushed its way to 60 mph from a standstill in a mere 3.9 seconds, and Mercedes claims a governed top speed of 174 mph. Brabus, though, took it upon itself to improve the C63 S’s twin-turbocharged V-8 by replacing the two turbochargers and incorporating a new ECU. Brabus says it added another 138 horses to the C63 S’s stable, bringing total output to 641 horsepower. Torque also grows from 516 lb-ft to a tire-shredding 604, all of which is available at 1750 rpm. The company claims the extra oomph propels the 650 cabrio to 60 mph in less than 3.7 seconds, while top speed rises to an even 200 mph. Brabus says a governor kicks in at the two-century mark, and that the 650 cabrio could go even faster. Alas, Brabus didn’t say how much faster; however, the car does sport a 340 km/h (211 mph) speedometer.
–
–
Further adding to the 650 cabrio’s menace are a set of Brabus-branded black 20-inch wheels, a body kit with matte or high-gloss carbon-fiber detailing, coil-over springs with 0.8 inch of ride-height adjustability, and a dual-mode exhaust system. Brabus notes that these pieces can be purchased individually or all at once.

While Brabus has yet to reveal pricing details for the 650 cabrio or its individualized items, a new Mercedes-AMG C63 S convertible will set consumers back a minimum of $ 81,775. No surprise then, that we expect a fully built 650 cabrio to kick that figure up a notch or two.
