According to the Times item on his Sunday night appearance, the comic was received “warmly,” greeted with an ovation “even before he began” his 15-minute set. Significantly, that piece only quoted men: Comedy Cellar owner Noam Dworman (“there can’t be a permanent life sentence on someone who does something wrong”) and fellow comic Mo Amer (“it was like a wow moment”). Vulture’s Hunter Harris went to the trouble of tracking down two women in the crowd, whose response was notably less enthusiastic. “There were at least four to five females that I could see,” one told her, “and three or four of them were not having it. They were just looking at him, deadpan, straight, not having it.”
You know who else is not having it? Some of our best cultural critics. So for the week’s recommended reading, we’re sharing some of the smartest responses we read to this test case in post-#MeToo “rehabilitation.”
Dana Schwartz on the subtext.
At Entertainment Weekly, Schwartz points out that the very circumstances of C.K.’s return — an unannounced appearance for an unwarned audience — bears an uncomfortable resemblance to the very acts that got him in this trouble to begin with:
Recall, if you will, the specifics of the stories women recounted about him. Louis C.K. — from a position of power either explicit (as a producer of a television show on which a woman was working) or implicit (as one of the most famous and acclaimed comedians in the world) — coerced women into watching him masturbate, or forced them to listen to him masturbate on the phone without their consent. What makes things even worse: All five of the women who agreed to go on record with the New York Times were comedians, and comedians who admired Louis C.K.’s work. In response, he turned them into props for his sexual fantasy.
And so, after what were undoubtedly the world’s most introspective ten months, Louis C.K. decided to surprise a possibly unwilling audience by claiming the stage in front of them, forcing them to watch him perform.
Mo Ryan is done.
Like most contemporary comedians, C.K. pinpoints Richard Pryor as one of his idols — and Pryor was guilty of plenty of off-stage sins himself. But one of the things that made him so influential was the degree to which he used the stage as his confessional, turning difficult events (like his bizarre 1979 weapons charge or his 1980 suicide attempt) into candid, painful, and painfully funny material.
C.K., disappointingly, did no such thing. In the Times, C.K.’s set is described by Dworman as “typical Louis C.K. stuff,” consisting of material about “racism, waitress tips, [and] parades.” Vulture added another key detail: there was also a joke about rape whistles. And this detail was too much for Mo Ryan, in a guest column at The Hollywood Reporter.
He could have released a comedy special on his site. It could have been an hour of real excavation. It could have been, just possibly, with the right approach, painfully tinged with humor, as he grappled with his history and damage. Damage done to multiple women and their careers, absolutely. But to the world, too. Because people looked up to him. People — myself included — at one time thought he was doing fine, vigorous work as he examined what it was like to be a father and a man and a citizen of the world at a weird time.
But this week, I feel like a rube. At that club, he appeared to just want 15 minutes of glory. How small and shabby. How disappointing. And ultimately, how infuriating.
Alison Herman on the cult of the comedy club.
Over at The Ringer, Flavorwire alum Herman takes on one of the many distressing elements of this story: the speed with which gatekeepers are clearly willing to welcome C.K. back into the already clique-ish comedy community.
Such a neutral framing of the Cellar’s position belies the club system’s role in perpetuating comedy’s power structure. That stage time at one of the most renowned spaces in the country doesn’t confer approval would surely come as a surprise to the thousands of comedians who’ve toiled in hopes of earning a Cellar spot and never gotten one. “I ran the light”—meaning, went over one’s allotted time—“at the Cellar once and that was enough for them to never have me back,” stand-up Emily Heller tweeted on Tuesday. In comedy, stage time is a precious resource vied for by performers and sometimes capriciously regulated by club staff. Taking it away is a punishment; conferring it is, at least in part, an endorsement—if not of a comic’s personal history, at least their right to the audience’s time and attention. It’s a business owner’s prerogative to use their platform as they see fit, but to act as if that platform doesn’t have an impact in itself is disingenuous at best. Just ask Mark Zuckerberg.
Anna Merlan on where we’re at.
The timing of C.K.’s toe-dip is fascinating because so many other men, disgraced by accusations in the first flush of #MeToo, are gingerly testing the waters themselves. As Merlan notes for Jezebel, it’s no coincidence.
Each of these men decided in the space of, at most, nine months or a year, that now was a reasonable time to make a reappearance. (In [Mario] Batali’s case, he was reportedly looking for a “second act” back in April, just four months after the harassment and assault allegations against him first broke. He remains under criminal investigation.)
And in many cases, most specifically in the comedy world, that canny, cynical math is working. It’s almost like some internal egg timer has gone off, some He’s Suffered Long Enough whistle pitched at a register only powerful people in these industries can hear. CK’s attempted comeback will be—indeed, already is—a test case. To get past a truly damaging sexual misconduct scandal, it enough to just be quiet for a while?
Rebecca Traister on where we’re going.
Writing for The Cut, Traister is also interested in the cynicism of the timing, tying C.K.’s appearance to reports of Matt Lauer angling to return to television, and wondering what it is that makes these men so culturally indispensable — particularly when their victims were granted no such importance.
What does it mean that C.K.’s ovation began before he even started his set? It means he got applauded just for being Louis C.K. Which, he might recall before he gets off on that too much, is exactly the reasoning that kept women from gaining any traction when they reported their experiences with Harvey Weinstein and Charlie Rose. “That’s just Harvey being Harvey” and “That’s just Charlie being Charlie” were verbatim lines used to excuse the fact that those guys assaulted and harassed scores of women — they were just being themselves. Literally just being the powerful man is enough to get you a whole lot in this fucked-up world.
And that low bar should give lie to the fantasy that whatever these guys offered — talent or skill or pure mediocrity — was something that only they could offer, a rank illusion in industries in which women were systematically denigrated, harassed, and wound up banished or fleeing out of frustration, anger, fear, or a combination of all three. The upshot is, men who sexually used less powerful women consciously or unconsciously managed to clear the field of potential competitors, of whole populations of colleagues who might well have been more gifted, funnier, smarter, than they were.

FX has informally, unofficially renewed Fargo for a fourth season.
At the cabler’s portion of the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour on Friday, CEO John Landgraf revealed that a fourth edition of Noah Hawley’s acclaimed anthology is in development. The series, which wrapped its third season last year, had been on hold pending series creator Noah Hawley’s interest/availability.
“Noah, who’s become quite a busy bee, not only with Legion [but with novels and features, too] has told us that he has an idea, which excites me enormously, for a fourth cycle,” Landgraf told reporters. “The plan is to have that ready for 2019.”
Other highlights from Landgraf’s presser:
* FX completed its investigation into Louis C.K.’s behavior during his tenure at the network and, per Landgraf, “We didn’t find any issues or complaints of any kind during the eight years we worked together.” Nonetheless, the comedian’s relationship with FX is over. Speaking of which…
* While acknowledging that C.K. played a major creative role during Better Things’ first two seasons, Landgraf expressed “extraordinary confidence”in series co-creator and star Pamela Adlon’s ability to fly solo (or with a new writing partner) in Season 3. “It’s Pamela’s show,” he maintained. “These are her stories. This is her life. Louis was her co-writer. She’s going to have to write them all herself or find another co-writer. I’m optimistic and confident that the third season will be great.”
* Landgraf offered no details regarding American Horror Story Season 8. “You’ll have to ask Ryan Murphy,” he said.
* Regarding a certain monstrous merger-in-the-making, the exec noted that his potential new bosses at Disney have “been a very good steward of brands that its bought,” citing Pixar and Marvel as examples. “The [fact that] the FX and Disney brands are so different from each other is a good thing,” he added. “We bring something distinctive and unique into their world.”

Following allegations of sexual misconduct against Louis C.K. (allegations the comedian confirmed were true), his film I Love You, Daddy was quickly pulled from its release by distribution company The Orchard. Now comes word that C.K. plans to buy the film back, which might indicate the disgraced comedian and filmmaker intends to release it himself online, or perhaps bury it forever. Details about the I Love You, Daddy rights are below.
Will general audiences ever see Louis C.K.’s I Love You, Daddy? On top of that, will general audiences even want to see I Love You, Daddy? The film, which was C.K.’s first directorial feature since 2001’s Pootie Tang, was swiftly pulled from the schedule after a New York Times report detailing a pattern of sexual misconduct throughout the comedian’s career. Distribution company The Orchard, who were set to open the film on November 17, 2017, officially cancelled its release. At that point, it seemed safe to assume we might have heard the last of I Love You, Daddy, at least for the foreseeable future. But now Deadline reports that Louis C.K. now plans to buy the film back.
The Orchard snapped-up I Love You, Daddy at TIFF for $ 5 million. Per Deadline, C.K. will pay back that money along with marketing costs incurred by The Orchard and the cost of mailing out approximately 12,000 award screeners to AMPAS, SAG, Golden Globes and Critics’ voting members – a factoid that I’m sure everyone feels really awkward about now.
Now the question remains: what’s going to happen to I Love You, Daddy? Once C.K. has the rights to the film again, he can technically do whatever he wants with it, including releasing it on his website the way he released his series Horace and Pete. But there’s also a good chance C.K. will bury the film for good. Why? It has too many bad associations at this point, and the film’s subject matter – which is deliberately provocative and incendiary, including jokes about someone masturbating in front of people, the very act C.K. was accused of – just makes the entire endeavor extra toxic.
I’ve actually seen I Love You, Daddy (I was one of the people who received one of those 12,000 award screeners), and I can honestly say it’s not worth watching, even if you’re morbidly curious. I’ll freely admit to being a fan of C.K. before I learned of his sexual misconduct, but even for fans (former or otherwise) of his work, there’s very little to enjoy here. It’s a needlessly nasty, downright grating film, and it would probably be best for everyone (Louis C.K. included) if it remains unseen.

Sarah Silverman is speaking out about the scandal surrounding her close friend Louis C.K.
Silverman addressed the swirl of news surrounding C.K. — the Louie star has admitted to masturbating in front of multiple women without their consent — in an emotional monologue on Thursday’s episode of her Hulu series I Love You America. In the clip, which you can watch above, a clearly choked-up Silverman struggles to reconcile the terrible stories we’re now hearing with the man she knows and loves.
After saying “I really, really, really don’t want to” comment on the C.K. situation, she remembers herself stating that “if it’s mentionable, it’s manageable,” and so she turns to “address the elephant masturbating in the room.” She calls C.K. “one of my best friends of over 25 years” before detailing his crimes: “He wielded his power with women in f–ked-up ways, sometimes to the point where they left comedy entirely.”
She could mention what a great father she knows C.K. to be, she says, “but that’s totally irrelevant, isn’t it?” She calls the whole situation “a real mindf–k… I love Louis, but Louis did these things. Both of those statements are true.” She keeps asking herself: “Can you love someone who did bad things?” And she admits she’s still struggling to answer that question: “I hope it’s OK if I am at once very angry for the women he wronged and the culture that enabled it… and also sad, because he’s my friend.”
Silverman strikes a hopeful note at the end, though, that all of this is a necessary reckoning for our society: “We need to be better. We will be better. I can’t f–king wait to be better.”

Saturday Night Live this weekend did not stay quiet on the subject of Louis C.K.‘s sexual misconduct.
The Secret Life of Pets was a runaway family film hit at the box office after pulling in $ 368.3 million at the domestic box office and $ 875.4 million worldwide. Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment were so happy with the results that they quickly ordered a sequel to arrive in the summer of 2019. But in light of recent events, that sequel will be missing one of the original film’s voice stars.
Louis C.K. has been removed as one of the voice stars of The Secret Life of Pets 2 following his admission to committing several acts of sexual misconduct throughout his career. The comedian played Max, the Jack Russell Terrier who got caught up in a series of misadventures in New York City along with his unwelcome new mutt companion Duke (Eric Stonestreet), but he will now be replaced with another actor.
Following Louis C.K.’s admission to these acts of sexual misconduct, all of the comedian’s collaborators have been cutting ties with him, so it should come as no surprise that Deadline has revealed Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment don’t want him anywhere near their successful family film franchise.
As of now there’s no indication as to who will replace Louis C.K. or if the story will be modified in any way to make his character less prominent. More than likely, it will be easiest to get another actor to play the character and just move forward. In all honesty, Louis C.K. didn’t really bring anything special to the character, who is just an everyman dog that could probably be played by any actor.
This is just another piece of the ongoing fallout of Louis C.K.’s career. Following the allegations from five women in a New York Times story earlier this week, and the admission that followed, The Orchard axed the distribution deal they had struck for his indie drama I Love You, Daddy. Netflix canceled plans to release a second original stand-up special as part of their deal with the comedian. HBO removed Louis C.K. from the Night of Too Many Stars benefit show and also took away all of the comedian’s projects from HBO Go. FX severed all ties with Louis C.K. and his production company Pig Newton. And TBS suspended production on the animated series The Cops that the comedian was working on with Albert Brooks.
Louis C.K.’s career likely won’t be resurrected anytime soon since his publicist, manager and agent have all dropped him from their client roster. There’s no telling if the industry will ever be able to forgive him for these transgressions (or if he even deserves to be forgiven), but the comedian himself said in his official statement on the controversy, “I have spent my long and lucky career talking and saying anything I want. I will now step back and take a long time to listen.”
This is another extremely upsetting, disturbing and disappointing turn in the ongoing revelations of sexual harassment in Hollywood. These kind of accusations don’t appear to be going anywhere, which is simultaneously sad and encouraging. It’s sad that there are so many cases of sexual harassment and misconduct in Hollywood, but it’s encouraging that people are listening in a way that they never have before. Hopefully we can start to weed out the powerful people who have used their position in the industry to manipulate people in such an inappropriate manner. But it appears plenty more prominent entertainers may fall before we’re finished.

The Times story was written by Melena Ryzik, Cara Buckley, and Jodi Kantor. Kantor was also one of the writers who broke the paper’s bombshell Harvey Weinstein story – another piece of meticulous investigative work that finally put long-standing industry whispers on the record. And as with Weinstein, C.K.’s people saw it coming; the New York premiere of his new film I Love You, Daddy was cancelled just hours ahead of time, as was an appearance on last night’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
C.K. has not yet responded to the story – his publicist responded to the paper’s interview request with a terse “Louis is not going to answer any questions” – but, as per usual, the response has been swift. HBO, which aired several of C.K’s specials and his first series Lucky Louie, announced Thursday he would “no longer be participating” in this year’s edition of the Night of Too Many Stars benefit, which will be held November 18. The network is also “removing Louis C.K.’s past projects from its On Demand services.”
As for I Love You, Daddy, which already seemed (to put it mildly) ill-timed, distributor The Orchard is “giving careful consideration to the timing and release of the film and continuing to review the situation.” It was slated for release in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago one week from today.
Obviously, there’s a lot to be said about this story, but for now, we’ll let other, better writers say it; perhaps give a glance to Emily Nussbaum’s thoughts here, or Alison Willmore’s here, or Matt Zoller Seitz’s here. But the headline and lede of the latter seem to sum it up best: Louis C.K. is done.
UPDATED 1:28pm: Louis C.K. has released a statement:
I want to address the stories told to the New York Times by five women named Abby, Rebecca, Dana, Julia who felt able to name themselves and one who did not.
These stories are true. At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman my dick without asking first, which is also true. But what I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at your dick isn’t a question. It’s a predicament for them. The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly.
I have been remorseful of my actions. And I’ve tried to learn from them. And run from them. Now I’m aware of the extent of the impact of my actions. I learned yesterday the extent to which I left these women who admired me feeling badly about themselves and cautious around other men who would never have put them in that position.
I also took advantage of the fact that I was widely admired in my and their community, which disabled them from sharing their story and brought hardship to them when they tried because people who look up to me didn’t want to hear it. I didn’t think that I was doing any of that because my position allowed me not to think about it.
There is nothing about this that I forgive myself for. And I have to reconcile it with who I am. Which is nothing compared to the task I left them with.
I wish I had reacted to their admiration of me by being a good example to them as a man and given them some guidance as a comedian, including because I admired their work.
The hardest regret to live with is what you’ve done to hurt someone else. And I can hardly wrap my head around the scope of hurt I brought on them. I’d be remiss to exclude the hurt that I’ve brought on people who I work with and have worked with who’s professional and personal lives have been impacted by all of this, including projects currently in production: the cast and crew of Better Things, Baskets, The Cops, One Mississippi, and I Love You Daddy. I deeply regret that this has brought negative attention to my manager Dave Becky who only tried to mediate a situation that I caused. I’ve brought anguish and hardship to the people at FX who have given me so much The Orchard who took a chance on my movie and every other entity that has bet on me through the years.
I’ve brought pain to my family, my friends, my children and their mother.
I have spent my long and lucky career talking and saying anything I want. I will now step back and take a long time to listen.
Thank you for reading.

One of Louis C.K.‘s longtime collaborators has broken her silence after this week’s stunning revelations.
Pamela Adlon — who worked with C.K. on the FX comedies Louie and Better Things — issued a statement on Friday that says, “My family and I are devastated and in shock after the admission of abhorrent behavior by my friend and partner, Louis C.K. I feel deep sorrow and empathy for the women who have come forward. I am asking for privacy at this time for myself and my family. I am processing and grieving and hope to say more as soon as I am able.”
C.K. has admitted to several instances of sexual misconduct alleged by five women in The New York Times this week, who say that C.K. masturbated in front of them without their consent. FX has since cut all ties with C.K., saying he will no longer serve as executive producer on any FX series, including Adlon’s Better Things.
Adlon has worked closely with C.K. for years, co-starring as his wife in the 2006 HBO comedy Lucky Louie and later appearing as his sometime love interest on C.K.’s acclaimed FX comedy Louie. She and C.K. also co-created FX’s Better Things, which stars Adlon and is currently airing its second season. C.K. wrote or co-wrote all 10 of Better Things‘ Season 2 episodes, with Adlon directing all 10.

Onetime Louis C.K. champion FX will no longer have anything to do with the comedian in light of his admission of sexual misconduct.
The cable network has severed ties with C.K., effectively canceling his comedy series Louie. Moving forward, he also will not be involved in the FX comedies he co-created: Pamela Adlon’s Better Things and Zach Galifianakis’ Baskets, as well as FX Productions’ One Mississippi and The Cops.
The network’s statement reads:
Today, FX Networks and FX Productions are ending our association with Louis C.K. We are cancelling the overall deal between FX Productions and his production company, Pig Newton. He will no longer serve as executive producer or receive compensation on any of the four shows we were producing with him — Better Things, Baskets, One Mississippi and The Cops.
Louis has now confirmed the truth of the reports relating to the five women victimized by his misconduct, which we were unaware of previously. As far as we know, his behavior over the past eight years on all five series he has produced for FX Networks and/or FX Productions has been professional. However, now is not the time for him to make television shows. Now is the time for him to honestly address the women who have come forth to speak about their painful experiences, a process which he began today with his public statement.
FX Networks and FX Productions remain committed to doing everything we can to ensure that all people work in an environment that is safe, respectful and fair, and we will continue our review of all of these productions to ensure that was and is the case.
The network’s move comes after The New York Times released a story Thursday in which five women alleged that C.K. masturbated and engaged in other inappropriate sexual behavior in their presence. On Friday, C.K. released a statement that read, in part, “These stories are true” and “There is nothing about this that I forgive myself for.”
Louie aired its Season 5 finale in 2015. In early 2016, FX CEO John Landgraf told reporters that C.K. “certainly hasn’t promised me further seasons” and warned that the show might never return, though he added that he and the comedian “talk every week” about doing more episodes. Soon after, C.K. himself said that he didn’t know if there would be any more Louie in the future.
“It’s such an autobiographical thing that I can do a version of Louie when he’s 60, if anyone still gives a s—t,” he told reporters at the time. “By the time I want to do it, I could call [FX] up and say, ‘I’m ready,’ and they could say, ‘Who is this?’”
On Thursday, HBO announced that C.K. would not take part in its Night of Too Many Stars comedy benefit. At the same time, FX released a statement saying the network was “obviously very troubled” by the claims and was reviewing the matter.
TBS, which ordered C.K.’s animated series The Cops to series in January, also has been suspended, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Comedian Louis C.K. has issued a statement regarding recent sexual misconduct allegations levied against him by five women.
In a story published Thursday by The New York Times, several woman alleged that C.K. masturbated in front of them without their consent. The statement contains C.K.’s first public comments on the accusations.
His statement in full is below:

On Thursday, HBO announced that the comedian would no longer take part in its Night of Too Many Stars comedy benefit special planned to air live on Saturday, Nov. 18, and that his comedy specials and 2006 sitcom Lucky Louie would no longer be available on HBO’s on-demand services.
Also on Thursday, FX — home to C.K.’s critically acclaimed and Emmy-winning comedy Louie, as well as Better Things and Baskets, which he co-created — released a statement saying the network was “obviously very troubled” by the claims and that it would “take all necessary actions to protect our employees and thoroughly investigate any allegations of misconduct within our workplace. That said, the matter is currently under review.”
