Worried at Russia and China’s technological edge, the US aims to have a hypersonic weapon by 2025, the US Navy said in a report. A fortnight later, Vladimir Putin was watching the test launch of Russia’s newest hypersonic missile.

The state-of-the-art Avangard hypersonic glider was successfully tested December 26. It performed in-flight vertical and horizontal maneuvers and hit its intended target, according to the Defense Ministry. The actual speed of the missile, which will enter service in 2019, can reach a whopping 30,000km/h.

The test launch was observed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, who labelled it “a big event for the armed forces, and probably for the entire country. “

Merely a week before the Avangard test, US Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson released a plan dubbed “A design for maintaining maritime superiority. Version 2.0.” One of the Pentagon’s top priorities for the coming years turned out to be none other than to “develop and field an offensive hypersonic weapon by 2025.”

‘No existing countermeasures’ to Russian hypersonic weapons, US govt. report admits



Admitting to having “no existing countermeasures” against such weapons, the US has long been nurturing plans to boost its own hypersonic strike and deterrence capabilities. In April the Air Force awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin to develop a hypersonic weapon prototype, while, this month, DARPA announced it is seeking“new designs” and materials to make sure prospective hypersonic vehicles do not burn up in the atmosphere.

Dismissing Alves’ claim, the Manchester City manager admitted that he has as many fans as critics among players he has coached. He provided Zlatan Ibrahimovic as an example of a player who he had difficulties with in the past. Last December, Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports Italy that Guardiola was “the most immature manager” he’s worked with, and referred to him as a ‘spineless coward‘ in his 2011 book I am Zlatan.

“They have another side from Sweden and other places where they don’t like me too much. Normally it happens when people don’t play regularly they are not big fans. We try to convince them – sometimes yes, sometimes no”, the Spaniard added modestly.

Stranger Things‘ return is still a year away, but star David Harbour has already let slip a main source of inspiration for Season 3.

In a new interview with our sister site Variety, the two-time Emmy nominee reveals that series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have partially modeled the next eight episodes after the 1985 action-comedy Fletch, starring Chevy Chase. “The Duffers are so specific each year with the movies… and Fletch is one movie we get to play around and have some fun with this season, which you wouldn’t expect from Stranger Things… and you certainly wouldn’t expect from a darker season,” Harbour says.

For those unfamiliar with the aforementioned film, Fletch revolves around an investigative reporter (Chase) who goes undercover for his next big story. While disguised as a homeless man, he’s approached by a wealthy suit who offers him a large sum of money to come to his home and kill him, all to avoid a terminal cancer diagnosis. When Fletch investigates, he discovers that the businessman is not in fact dying, and shenanigans ensue. (The film is currently available to stream on HBO Now.)

Word of the Fletch homage comes months after it was first announced that Jake Busey (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) would appear in Season 3 as Bruce, a journalist for the The Hawkins Post with questionable morals and a sick sense of humor. What’s more, Cary Elwes (Princess Bride) is set to play the “slick and sleazy” Mayor Kline.

Stranger Things‘ Summer 2019 return was recently confirmed by Netflix at the Television Critics’ Assoc. summer press tour. The third season delay had first been teased back in July, when the streaming service released a cheeky promo/local-style commercial for Hawkins’ new Starcourt Mall.

US President Donald Trump has been invited to meet in person with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a senior South Korean official has announced after a meeting at the White House.

Kim said he is committed to denuclearization and said North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests, South Korean national security adviser Chung Eui-yong announced on Thursday evening at the White House.

Trump responded that he will “meet Kim by May,” Chung added.

Chung made the surprise announcement after meeting with Trump and the US national security adviser H.R. McMaster on Thursday. He credited Trump’s leadership and the US policy of “maximum pressure” for bringing North Korea to the table.

The Republic of Korea and its allies “stand united in insisting we do not repeat mistakes of the past,” Chung said, declining to take questions from the press.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is scheduled to meet with Kim at the end of April in the demilitarized zone (DMZ). “Many critical moments are ahead,” Moon said Thursday.

The Korean peninsula has been divided since 1953, after an uneasy armistice suspended the bloody three-year conflict between the Communist North and the US-allied South that at one point involved both US and Chinese militaries. Last month, North and South Korean athletes competed together at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

Al-Maliki also said that the coalition forces had completed the investigation into the incident and conducted a “comprehensive review” of selected military objectives to examine whether they were compatible with international humanitarian law and customary rules of targeting.

He also said that the airstrike was targeting a legitimate military objective, which was a Houthi rebel command center. The coalition “was not intentionally targeting” the residential buildings that were eventually hit in the strike, he added, accusing the Houthis of deliberately using civilians as human shields by placing their military facilities in residential districts.

He then re-affirmed the coalition’s “commitment to the full implementation of the provisions of international humanitarian law, especially on the protection of civilians and application of highest standards of targeting as well as legal and ethical commitment to the principle of transparency,” the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Friday’s attack targeted the Faj Attan area on the southern outskirts of Sanaa in the early morning and claimed lives of at least 14 civilians, including children, as two residential buildings were reduced to rubble.

The incident took place just two days after the coalition hit a hotel located in the Yemeni capital, not far from the Houthi checkpoint. That airstrike also killed dozens of people. The attack on the hotel was condemned by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which said the Saudi-led coalition was responsible for protecting civilians in Yemen.

The coalition actions were also condemned by many human rights organizations. Lynn Maalouf, Amnesty International’s Middle East research director, called on the UN “to look at the evidence” and take action against the Saudis, adding that “schools and hospitals… lie in ruins, hundreds of young lives [were] lost to reckless air strikes,” as reported by AFP.

The International Committee of the Red Cross condemned Friday’s airstrike, calling it “outrageous.”

“Eight of the victims were members of the same family, including five children between three and 10 years old,” said the deputy head of the Red Cross delegation in Yemen, Carlos Morazzani.

“Such loss of civilian life is outrageous and runs counter to the basic tenets of the law of armed conflict,” he added, as cited by AFP.

The UN also accused the coalition of carrying out an attack on the Yemeni southwestern Taez province that killed 20 people, including children. “In the week from August 17 to August 24, 58 civilians have been killed, including 42 by the Saudi-led coalition,” the UN OHCHR spokeswoman Liz Throssell told reporters in Geneva on Friday.

The coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been waging a military campaign against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015, in an attempt to put the ousted Yemeni president back in power. Since the start of the campaign, the coalition has been repeatedly accused of killing dozens of civilians in its airstrikes but it rarely took responsibility for such incidents.

The campaign and Saudi-imposed blockade of the impoverished nation have contributed to a humanitarian crisis in Yemen, including a major outbreak of cholera and continued malnutrition of the population, human rights organizations say.

Major Western powers, inducing the US and the UK, have been contributing to the Saudi war effort by selling Riyadh weapons and providing the coalition air missions with refueling and targeting intelligence.

Gove said he “shared his feelings” on the Grenfell Tower fire but Morgan was not impressed with his answer: “These people are being fobbed off with BS from the government and they need more help.”

When the politician told him that his line of questioning was heating up the situation further, Morgan told him abruptly: “You can stick your coolness where the sun don’t shine. I don’t give a damn what you say.”

“Why did you ask me to come on your show then?” Gove retorted to him.   

The pair ended up at loggerheads as the interview came to a close after Gove suggested that Morgan was “showboating”.

The linked @LateNightDonald account is also active, with tweets dating back to Tuesday, March 21. The account promises to “Make Night Late Again,” with Donald asserting that he’ll be “the most terrific, luxurious, fantastic late night show you’ve ever seen. It’ll be Arsenio x10!” The account also takes jabs at other prominent late-night hosts, including John Oliver, Samantha Bee, James Corden and Jimmy Fallon.

It is unclear when we’ll learn more about The President Show, but it’s safe to say it’ll feature a Trump impersonator as its host. The show could be Comedy Central’s answer for the 11:30 pm time slot, which was vacated by Larry Wilmore in August 2016 following the abrupt cancellation of The Nightly Show. Hardwick’s @Midnight has since aired at 11:30 pm, but was always considered a temporary fix. At the time, the basic cabler released a statement indicating that a replacement for Wilmore would be announced sometime in 2017.
