Russian President Vladimir Putin denied Russian responsibility for Europe's energy crisis and said the EU can simply turn on the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline if it wants more natural gas from his country.

"The bottom line is, if you have an urge, if it's so hard for you, just lift the sanctions on Nord Stream 2, which is 55 billion cubic metres of gas per year, just push the button and everything will get going," said Putin after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan on Friday, per Reuters.

He also criticized the "green agenda" — the EU's renewable energy push — which he said started the energy crisis even before the war in Ukraine.

The Nord Stream 2 natural-gas pipeline runs in parallel to Nord Stream 1, a key pipeline that delivers fuel from Russia to Europe. The $ 11 billion Nord Stream 2 pipeline was completed in September, and stands to double Russia's gas flows to Europe. However, Nord Stream 2 has never been operational because Germany shelved the project in February, days before Russia invaded Ukraine. 

The EU is staring at an energy crisis this coming winter as Russia supplies about 40% of Europe's natural gas, most of which is transported via pipelines. In 2021, Russia exported about 155 billion cubic meters of the fuel to Europe — more than one-third of which came from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, according to Reuters.

In early September, Russia state gas giant Gazprom completely turned off supply to Europe via Nord Stream 1. Gazprom and the Kremlin have consistently insisted that the slowing of gas flows was due to technical reasons.

Benchmark European natural-gas future have more than doubled from a year ago.

Today, we've got our closest look yet at the Apple Watch Pro, thanks to renders from 91mobiles. Typically we'd treat most leaks from unknown "industry sources" with a healthy dose of salt, but according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the renders are "indeed it." And for the most part, it's everything we expected. There's a bigger screen, as Gurman's earlier reports have suggested, as well a minor evolution of the Apple Watch Series 7 design. (Sorry, flat edge fans.) 

Take a close look and you'll notice an extra button on the opposite side of the (ruggedized) Digital Crown and multitasking button. Both 91mobile and Gurman speculate that it could be programmable, allowing you to launch a specific app or workout without dealing with the touchscreen. Case leaks from Sonny Dickson and DuanRui (via The Verge and Weibo) also point to a larger screen and additional button.

The Apple Watch Pro will likely target extreme sports fanatics—the sort of folks who wouldn't mind spending close to $ 1,000 for Garmin's high-end smartwatches. While that may sound extravagant, don't forget that there have always been high-end Apple Watch models not meant for mortal wallets. The current Hermes Series 7 collection ranges all the way up to an eye-watering $ 1,759. So with that context, maybe a $ 1,000 Apple Watch Pro doesn't seem so crazy? (No, it's still crazy.)

Having trouble deciding what to watch on Netflix? Well, now there’s a button for that.

The streamer is rolling out a new “Shuffle Play” button on smart TVs equipped with the Netflix app, according to our sister site Variety. When pressed, the button will start a random movie or TV show that corresponds to the user’s recommendations or are similar to titles the user has watched in the past. The button can be found either underneath the profile row in the startup screen, on the home screen of a user’s profile or on the TV menu sidebar.

“The purpose of the test is to make it easier for members to find something to watch,” a Netflix spokesperson tells Variety, adding that the streamer aims to roll out a permanent “shuffle” feature to all users at some point: “The hope is to absolutely productize something.”

Last year, Netflix tested a “Random Episode” button that allowed users to choose to watch a random episode of their favorite TV shows, rather than having to choose a specific episode manually. The button was only available to Android users, however, and still hasn’t been rolled out to all Netflix users.

Google is developing a new cache for Chrome (via CNET)that should make some page loads extremely fast. The only catch? They’ll have to be pages you’ve already seen and are revisiting after hitting the browser’s back button.

Chrome already caches the files that make up a page, so revisiting a page in most circumstances shouldn’t force the browser to retrieve the images, JavaScripts, and CSS that are used to build the page. But currently, the browser has to re-parse the HTML and re-build the page’s programmatic representation, uncompress the images, re-execute all the JavaScript, reapply all the stylesheets, and so on. It’s just the networking step that gets skipped.

The new bfcache (for “back/forward cache”) changes that: it lets the browser capture the entire state of a running page—including scripts that are in the middle of execution, the rendered images, and even the scroll position—and reload that state later. With bfcache, rather than having to reload the page from scratch, the page will look as if it was paused when you click a link to a new page and subsequently resumed when you hit back.

YouTube’s dislike button can be a source of anxiety for many creators, and now YouTube is considering a number of options to prevent viewers from abusing that tool. Tom Leung, director of project management at YouTube, posted an update to the Creator Insider channel recently in which he detailed some “lightly discussed” options for combatting “dislike mobs,” or large groups of users who slam the dislike button on a video before watching the whole thing, or even watching the video at all.

While none of the options Leung details may ever become permanent, YouTube is thinking about experimentation. Currently, like and dislike ratings are shown by default—that’s why anyone can see the number of likes and dislikes a video has by checking out the numbers next to the thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons beneath the video player. However, users can change their settings to make ratings invisible.

One of the new options YouTube has talked about is making those ratings invisible by default, so you wouldn’t be able to see the number of likes or dislikes a video has. Other options include asking users to provide more information about why they disliked a video (possibly in the form of a checklist), removing the dislike count across the board, and removing the dislike button entirely.

Up until now, if you saw a YouTube video you liked embedded in a website, you had to click through the video to YouTube’s page in order to subscribe to that channel. Now, YouTube is making it a little easier for viewers to see the videos they want (and for channel operators to grab those subscribers). Going forward, YouTube embeds will feature a “Subscribe” button.

You can see the subscribe button in action in the video below, which is our Samsung Galaxy Book 2 hands-on. If you hover over the Engadget logo on the top left, an option to subscribe to our channel will appear. The feature was first spotted by 9to5Google.
