Buster Keaton was one of the biggest names in early cinema, famous for his physical comedy. He thrived on an ability to improvise these gags; Keaton grew up as a vaudeville performer, and spent his childhood improvising slapstick routines with his father onstage. As a Hollywood filmmaker, Keaton continued to rely on improvisation for his comedy — but this required him to follow one simple rule.

Keaton got his start as an entertainer traveling in a company alongside Harry Houdini. It was here that he learned to improvise fluidly and hilariously. His first time in front of a camera was in Fatty Arbuckle’s “The Butcher Boy.” “[Arbuckle] only had to turn me loose in the set and I’d have material in two minutes, because I’d been doing it all my life,” Keaton explained (via A Hard Act to Follow).

When it came to his own films, Keaton made sure there was space for on-the-spot creative decisions: “Well as a rule, oh about 50 percent you have in your mind before you start the picture, and the rest you develop as you’re making it,” Keaton told Studs Turkel. “We never even thought of writing a script, we didn’t need to.”

Silent film stars often left lots of room for improvisation in their work — in fact, they would often approach a film with only the beginning and end in mind. As far as Keaton and his counterparts were concerned, the path from point A to point B was half of the journey. “When we get the start and the finish, we’ve got it, because … the middle we can always take care of. That’s easy.”

There Was No Script To Follow

Keaton favored extreme gags over narratives, which is why he chose to make “Sherlock Jr.” “I laid out a few of these tricks, some of the tricks I knew from the stage,” he recalled (via A Hard Act to Follow). But he realized he couldn’t “do it and tell a legitimate story because they’re illusions … it’s got to come in a dream.” He chose the premise of a projectionist that falls asleep on the job so he could totally suspend reality. Keaton was all about maximizing his creative freedom.

Through creative storytelling, Keaton was able to improvise heavily for many years. Silent cinema left things so open-ended that the Hollywood legend would not even begin to work with a script until “The Cameraman” in 1929. However, when MGM and other studios moved exclusively into talking pictures, cinema changed forever. “New York stage directors, New York writers, dialogue writers, and the musicians union all moved to Hollywood,” Keaton recounted to CBC. The new writers brought with them a new style of writing, one that Stone Face described as “joke-happy.” “They don’t look for the action, they’re looking for funny things to say,” he lamented.

Keaton and the other kings of physical comedy struggled when silent films fell out of fashion — the film industry had new priorities. Keaton would go on to make several sound films, including the 1931 hit “Sidewalks of New York” (which was actually the actor’s most commercially successful film). Still, the actor lost the creative freedom he had enjoyed as a silent film director, including the freedom to improvise.

The Coen Brothers’ ‘Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ is a Wild Western Treat https://briefnews.eu/the-coen-brothers-ballad-of-buster-scruggs-is-a-wild-western-treat/ https://briefnews.eu/the-coen-brothers-ballad-of-buster-scruggs-is-a-wild-western-treat/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 06:18:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-coen-brothers-ballad-of-buster-scruggs-is-a-wild-western-treat/ Joel and Ethan Coen’s new film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a Netflix release, originally (and they say erroneously) reported as a television series. But it’s easy to understand the confusion; it’s an anthology film, the first they’ve ever made, six stories of varying length and tone, bound only by the shared setting of the American West. And I do mean “bound”; the first images are close-ups of the book that supposedly contains them, a well-worn volume with the full title The Ballad of Buster Scruggs — and Other Tales of the American Frontier — with Color Plates, and they go back to that book as a bridging device, filling the frame with color illustrations and snatches of text. It’s a rich literary tradition, spanning from early practitioners like Owen Wister and Zane Grey to more modern wordsmiths like Elmore Leonard and Charles Portis, whom the Coens previously adapted for 2010’s True Grit, and who clearly shares their love for florid language (it’s full of ornate dialogue like “There’ll be customers there amenable to drawin’ up in a circle ‘round a deck o’ cards”).

The first section is the title story, starring O Brother, Where Art Thou’s Tim Blake Nelson as a cheerfully murderous singing cowboy, who confidently, conspiratorially addresses the camera as he makes waste of anybody who looks at him sideways. The central conceit here is one of incongruity, of Gene Autry type fused with the trigger-happy gore of late Peckinpah; it’s also the most typically Coen-esque of the films, with musical numbers in the style of O Brother and their recent Hail, Caesar!, paired with the pitch-black gunshot comedy of The Ladykillers and Burn After Reading. In other words, they’re easing us in, and getting some big laughs along the way.

(Netflix)

Next comes “Near Algodones,” with James Franco as a bank robber on a streak of very bad luck, beginning with his encounter with a chatty, wall-eyed bank teller (the great Stephen Root) who proves himself a more formidable foe than anticipated. Sometimes the Coens land on an image so juicy you half-wonder if the whole film was created to get them there; there’s an image like that here, of Franco’s outlaw abandoned mid-hanging, atop his horse with a rope around his neck, as the animal slooooowly eats the grass on the ground, moving farther and father from the tree, leaving less and less slack.

That story’s also mostly comic in nature — both are really just extended jokes — so the tonal shift of the third section, “Meal Ticket,” may catch some viewers unawares. Liam Neeson stars as the caretaker of “Professor Harrison” (Harry Melling, from the Harry Potter movies), an orator/entertainer with neither arms nor legs. They wordlessly go about their repetitive routine, moving from one encampment to another, as Harrison performs his dramatic readings for dwindling crowds. It’s awfully melancholy, a portrait of monotony and misery with no clear escape until the caretaker spots a hot new act: a performing chicken that does math problems.

A wonderfully crusty Tom Waits does a solo turn in the fourth story, “All Gold Canyon,” as a prospector who finally strikes gold and — well, the pleasure of this one comes from how patiently the Coens deliver its payoffs and punchlines, and how the subtext of much of the film to date (the stark cruelty of this era) becomes text. Oh, and Waits delivers a running to-himself commentary that legitimately recalls W.C. Fields; your mileage may vary, but this viewer’s favorite line is probably “How high can a bird count, anyway?”

(Netflix)

Story number five, “The Gal Who Got Rattled,” stars the marvelous Zoe Kazan as a nervous young woman traveling west in a wagon train with her brother, who quickly dies and leaves her, much to her terror, to fend for herself. Bill Heck matches up nicely as the wagon master who takes a shine to her; they develop a sweet, easy chemistry, and the entire section has a genuine kindness that’s not quite like anything the Coens have tried before, aside from those short scenes between Margie and Norm in Fargo. And the final section, “The Mortal Remains” is better experienced than described, taking the old standby of five strangers in a stagecoach and just sort of willing it into something supernatural.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs runs a hefty 135 minutes, but it moves like a runaway mule — again, probably because it shifts tempos so often, veering from broad comedy to melancholic tragedy, and points in between. And though it sounds like a strange adjective for a lengthy picture, its most admirable quality may be its discipline; several of these stories are such clever ideas, with so many unexplored possibilities, that it must’ve been tempting to spin them off into features of their own. Instead, they’re contained and condensed for maximum effect, and the resulting multi-faceted effort is an investigation of ideas and narrative gimmicks that might not’ve sustained their own exploration.

As with any anthology film, consensus favorites may vary; mine is probably “The Gal Who Got Rattled.” But something about “Meal Ticket” won’t leave my head. It is, on reflection, a story about a kind of sophisticated, intellectual entertainment that has fallen out of favor, and the goofy sideshow that taken its place in the public imagination. Perhaps the Coens didn’t mean to craft a metaphor for theatrical movie-going and at-home binge-watching, though little they do seems accidental. Suffice it to say that were it intentional, I’m glad the problem-solving chicken paid them enough money to craft something this wild and alive.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is now playing in limited release; it expands wider, and streams on Netflix, on Friday.

Netflix Picks Up the Coen Brothers’ Anthology Series, ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ https://briefnews.eu/netflix-picks-up-the-coen-brothers-anthology-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/ https://briefnews.eu/netflix-picks-up-the-coen-brothers-anthology-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 03:33:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netflix-picks-up-the-coen-brothers-anthology-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/ The Coen Brothers’ venture into anthology series territory with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs became public knowledge back in January, and now it seems that the directorial bros have skipped straight to the peakiest of peak-TV territory. Scruggs, The Hollywood Reporterjust announced, will be a Netflix series. The Coen Brothers’ statement about this is, simply, “We’re streaming, motherfuckers!” The project is being produced by Annapurna, with a 2018 premiere date in sight.

There may be an anthology series based on a Coen Brothers film currently in existence — but Noah Hawley’s Fargo doesn’t exactly give a window into what a Coen Brothers TV series would look like, mostly because, you know, it’s Noah Hawley’s show.

The Coen brothers themselves haven’t really waxed poetic about Fargo, despite audience/critical acclaim. Joel Coen said of that series, back in a 2016 interview with the Radio Times, “We’re just not very interested. I mean, we’re perfectly happy with it.We have no problem with it. It just feels divorced from our film somehow.” He’d followed that up by saying, “Here’s the thing. We work short. Our longest movie (2008’s Oscar winner No Country for Old Men) is two hours two minutes. It’s just not how we think about stories. I mean, after two hours with a character we feel we’re pretty much done with them.” Ethan, however, then chimed in, “Would it be interesting to do something like that at some point? I don’t even know where you’d start frankly.”

And it seems like the brand of slightly-less-dismissive curiosity espoused in that last statement got the better of them: when it was announced that the Coen Brothers themselves were working on an anthology series, it was at once familiar and unprecedented, not to mention unexpected, given Joel’s seeming disinterest in the TV form, and maybe a little expected, given Ethan’s more open reply.

But then the fact that it’s actually a six “chapter” series — each telling an apparently separate tale about the American West — further seemed to confirm that this was the Coens doing TV on their own terms: they’re still getting to “work short,” even while working long. Complicating that, however, is the fact that, at least from the title, it does seem like the through-line could be one consistent character (maybe?): apparently O Brother, Where Art Thou?‘s Tim Blake Nelson will star as Scruggs; though whether or not all or one of the tales concern the titular character remains to be seen.

Netflix Lassos the Coen Brothers’ Western Series ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ https://briefnews.eu/netflix-lassos-the-coen-brothers-western-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/ https://briefnews.eu/netflix-lassos-the-coen-brothers-western-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 00:09:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netflix-lassos-the-coen-brothers-western-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Joel and Ethan Coen‘s first TV project, the Western anthology series The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, has landed at Netflix. And on brand for the Coen brothers, they announced the production with some choice words that aren’t publishable in the first paragraph. Avert your children’s ears.

“We are streaming motherfuckers!” said Joel Coen and Ethan Coen.

“The Coens are visionary directors, masterful storytellers, and colorful linguists. We are thrilled for Netflix to become home to the full range of their talents,” said Cindy Holland ,the vice president for Original Content for Netflix.

I kind of wish I could have just published the Netflix press release as is, because it is as wild and wacky a ride as an actual Coen brothers movie. While we knew that the Coen brothers were working on a TV project as far back as January, this is the first official confirmation of it being a Western anthology series made in conjunction with Annapurna Television.

The Academy Award-winning directing duo will write, direct, and executive produce the Netflix original series, which will be an anthology series following six stories set on the American frontier “told through the unique and incomparable voice of Joel and Ethan Coen.”

Netflix continued with more details of the series:

Each chapter will feature a distinct story about the American West. The project will star Tim Blake Nelson as Buster, and many others.

Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle from Annapurna Television will also serve as executive producers, along with the Coen brothers’ longtime collaborator Robert Graf.

The Western genre and anthology medium seem like a perfect combination for the Coen brothers, who have made films in both these veins with great success. The Western is a staple of the Coen brothers’ films, and they’ve recently explored more anthology-style storytelling with Hail Caesar!, an homage to Golden Age Hollywood as told through whimsical, disconnected vignettes.

We got some details of what the six anthology stories would encompass in July:

  • “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is about a singing cowboy.
  • “Near Algodones” is about a high-plains drifter whose own fecklessness dogs his attempts at bank robbery and cattle driving.
  • The third story, “Meal Ticket,” follows an actor and impresario of a traveling show.
  • The fourth, “All Gold Canyon,” is about a prospector who happily finds a gold seam but then unhappily finds an evil encroacher.
  • The fifth, “The Gal Who Got Rattled,” follows two trail bosses on the Oregon Trail and a woman on the wagon train who needs the help of one of them and who might be a marriage prospect for the other.
  • Lastly, “The Mortal Remains,” about the five very different passengers on a stagecoach of mysterious destination.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is set to premiere in 2018.

Joel & Ethan Coen‘s western television series, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, is about to secure its stars. James Franco (The Disaster Artist), Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick), Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), and more are closing deals to be a part of the Coen Brothers’ first original TV show. Production begins later this month in New Mexico, where the filmmakers shot No Country for Old Men and True Grit.

Below, learn more about The Ballad of Buster Scruggs cast.

According to the Tracking Board, Stephen Root (Get Out), Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey), and Ralph Ineson (The Witch) are also finalizing deals. the Coen Brothers wrote and will direct the limited series, which they’re collaborating with Annapurna Television on. There are six stories in total, each having a standalone story.

Here’s a recent rundown of the episodes:

“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is about a singing cowboy (Tim Blake Nelson).

“Near Algodones” is about a high-plains drifter whose own fecklessness dogs his attempts at bank robbery and cattle driving. Franco, Root, and Ineson may star in this episode.

The third story, “Meal Ticket,” follows an actor and impresario of a traveling show.

The fourth, “All Gold Canyon,” is about a prospector who happily finds a gold seam but then unhappily finds an evil encroacher.

The fifth, “The Gal Who Got Rattled,” follows two trail bosses on the Oregon Trail and a woman on the wagon train who needs the help of one of them and who might be a marriage prospect for the other. Kazan, who’s great in Ruby Sparks and has been heavily lauded for her work in The Big Sick, might play “the gal who got rattled.”

Lastly, “The Mortal Remains,” about the five very different passengers on a stagecoach of mysterious destination. Per The Tracking Board, Daly will star in this episode.

Where we’ll be able to watch these stories unfold hasn’t been announced yet. When news of the series first broke, it was mentioned Annapurna is “pursuing a combined TV / theatrical release,” not dissimilar to the old plans for The Dark Tower series that was going to be a tie-in for the upcoming movie. With shooting about to get underway, I’m sure we’ll get more details on The Ballad of Buster Scruggs soon, perhaps even before the Coen Brothers-scripted and George Clooney-directed Suburbicon hits theaters in November. Production begins in mid-July and goes until September, and hopefully we’ll see The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018.

New Details About the Coen Brothers’ Western TV Series ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ https://briefnews.eu/new-details-about-the-coen-brothers-western-tv-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/ https://briefnews.eu/new-details-about-the-coen-brothers-western-tv-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/#respond Sat, 01 Jul 2017 17:09:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-details-about-the-coen-brothers-western-tv-series-the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs/ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Earlier this year, we learned that filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen had become the latest Hollywood directors who were making the jump to the small screen when they announced they’d be writing and directing a new TV series. We knew the title (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), the genre (a Western, which is something they’re familiar with through films like True Grit and No Country for Old Men), and that they’d be collaborating with Annapurna Television for the limited series, which was described as an integrated TV and theatrical experience.

Exactly how that last part will work is still up in the air, but at least now we have some newly-released plot details for the show.

The Albuquerque Journal (via The Playlist) doesn’t refer to Buster Scruggs as a TV show, but instead as “a feature-length omnibus consisting of six separate stories,” all of which are Westerns. Here’s a break down of what those six stories will be:

“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is about a singing cowboy.

“Near Algodones” is about a high-plains drifter whose own fecklessness dogs his attempts at bank robbery and cattle driving.

Lastly, “The Mortal Remains,” about the five very different passengers on a stagecoach of mysterious destination.

Similar to how the Coen Brothers’ Golden Age of Hollywood movie Hail, Caesar! allowed them to tell multiple stories within the framing of a larger narrative by exploring different genre movies being made on a Hollywood studio lot, this new “omnibus” seems to give them the ability to tell a variety of different Western-themed stories under the same roof, so to speak, without having to make multiple Western feature films in a row.

There’s still a lot that’s up in the air, including casting and which network or streaming service will ultimately be the home for this ambitious project, not to mention the potential for a theatrical component. But production takes place from mid-July to September, so I expect we’ll learn more about casting soon and see this – in some form or another – on screens in 2018.

This meticulous attention to detail truly does shine in Keaton’s fearless stuntwork. Keaton broke his neck during the making of Sherlock Jr. (he didn’t know it until nine years later) and left himself mere inches to survive a collapsing house in Steamboat Bill Jr. But Keaton always made sure his acting prowess was front and center, boosting his incredible athleticism with unforgettable characters. “Stuntmen don’t get laughs,” he once said. We’re highlighting a few of Keaton’s most death-defying stunts in GIF form past the break. Metrograph’s Buster Keaton series runs through March 26.
