Businessman spills all on ultimatum https://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-2018-lord-sugar-to-quit-businessman-spills-all-on-ultimatum/ https://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-2018-lord-sugar-to-quit-businessman-spills-all-on-ultimatum/#respond Wed, 24 Oct 2018 18:01:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-2018-lord-sugar-to-quit-businessman-spills-all-on-ultimatum/

Business tycoon Lord Alan Sugar, 71, is renowned for his sharp words, explosive rants in the boardroom and quick firing of The Apprentice contestants.

But, he has revealed how he once threatened to quit the popular reality business TV show, unless BBC bosses changed his perception.

The businessman gave producers an ultimatum, to stop making him “look like a bl**dy ogre” or he would walk away.

Fearing The Apprentice wouldn’t be the same without his control, it seems he got his way and is now even allowed to help edit the show.

In an interview with The Mirror, he explained how he’s “always like to be a bit humorous”.

“But unfortunately previous editors of The Apprentice, under the BBC’s instructions, have been advised to make me look like a bl**dy ogre or whatever,” he explained.

“Part and parcel of the agreement for me to continue doing the programme is for me to say that I am not going to be shown as that anymore.”

He added how “people get nervous” when they are around him “because of this perceived stance” they see on show.

“In real life, it’s very straightforward, very business-like. There’s no reason for people to be nervous. t’s as simple as that,” Lord Sugar divulged.

This series, viewers have seen a warmer side to the mogul, with him even attempting to put the contestants in the boardroom at ease with a few jokes.

Last week, Kurran Pooni was seen on screen with his arm in a cast and sling.

It comes after the contestants, during downtime in The Apprentice decided to have an arm wrestle and unfortunately for Kurran he came out worse than just losing.

When it came to the contestants gathering in the boardroom following that week’s task, Lord Sugar noticed his injury and asked: “What happened to you?”

Kurran revealed: “I fractured a bone in my arm last night in the house, unfortunately. We were having an arm wrestling competition.”

Lord Sugar gasped: “Arm wrestling competition?” before making a jibe at Kurran’s acting career.

He teased: “I thought actors were supposed to break a leg?

“Well, you finally got into a cast anyway. Your big break? And from what I hear, you’ve appeared in Casualty, also?”

Tonight the remaining thirteen contestants are challenged with selling high-end products and services at one of the world’s biggest bodybuilding expos.

However, tensions will rise when they clash over which team will get to sell top notch weights.

Who will be the next candidate to be fired?

The Apprentice 2018 airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One.

  • Felix Sater, a Russian-born businessman and associate of President Donald Trump, confirmed Friday that the Trump Organization was pursuing a deal with a sanctioned Russian bank at the height of the 2016 election.
  • The company was trying to secure financing for a Trump Tower in Moscow from Russia’s VTB Bank through a local developer.
  • The US imposed sanctions on VTB in 2014 and 2015, which froze its assets in the country and blocked US entities from doing business with the bank.
  • The revelation will be of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller, who recently subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents related to the Trump Tower Moscow deal.

Felix Sater, a Russian-born businessman with financial ties to the Trump Organization, confirmed Friday that President Donald Trump’s business was privately negotiating a deal with a sanctioned Russian bank during the 2016 US election.

The detail first emerged in a status report that democrats on the House Intelligence Committee released earlier this week in response to Republicans’ decision to shut down the committee’s Russia investigation. The report outlined dozens of leads — including witness testimony, document requests, and subpoenas — the minority said it was not able to pursue.

Police have confirmed that they are treating the death of Russian businessman Nikolai Glushkov as murder. Glushkov, 68, was found dead at his London home this week.

A post mortem revealed that Glushkov, an associate of the late-Putin critic and oligarch Boris Berezovsky, died from a compression to the neck.

Police released a statement on Friday confirming that they have launched a murder investigation into Glushkov’s death. “A murder investigation has been launched following the results of a post mortem into the death of 68-year-old Russian businessman Nikolai Glushkov,” London’s Metropolitan Police said.

The Met also says there is nothing to link the case to the attack on ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury on March 4. Police also said there is currently no evidence that Glushkov was poisoned.

Jordan’s top businessman arrested in Saudi Arabia – sources https://briefnews.eu/jordans-top-businessman-arrested-in-saudi-arabia-sources/ https://briefnews.eu/jordans-top-businessman-arrested-in-saudi-arabia-sources/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 03:05:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jordans-top-businessman-arrested-in-saudi-arabia-sources/ Sabih al-Masri, Jordan’s most influential businessman, has been detained by Saudi authorities during a business trip to Riyadh, the entrepreneur’s family and friends said.

Masri, a Saudi citizen of Palestinian origin with major investments in Palestine, was allegedly detained last Tuesday shortly before he was planning to depart from Riyadh. The billionaire was visiting the Saudi capital to chair meetings of his companies in the country.

“Masri was heading to the airport and they told him to stay where you are, and they picked him up,” a source, who opted not disclose their identity, told Reuters. “He has been answering questions about his business and partners,” another source said.

Later, an unidentified person close to the billionaire’s family said that Masri was “currently restricted from leaving Saudi Arabia, [but] no official charges have been filed against him.”

According to other sources, Masri’s associates warned him to refrain from visiting Saudi Arabia after an anti-corruption crackdown saw hundreds of businessmen, minister and princes, including the country’s richest man Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, arrested in November. According to reports, Riyadh is demanding that detainees give up large swaths of their wealth in order to regain their freedom.

Masri has major investments in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Palestine. He acquired 20 percent of shares of the Arab Bank together with Jordanian and Arab investors to become its chairman in 2012. The entrepreneur also founded the Saudi Astra Group, which is active in various sectors of economy in the region, including in agriculture, telecoms, construction and mining. In his native Palestine, he has a large stake in Paltel, a public shareholding company, among other things.

Masri’s arrest may have been linked to the controversy over Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Political sources told Reuters that Riyadh could have detained him to pressure Jordan’s King Abdullah to skip Wednesday’s emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Turkey.

However, King Abdullah was present at the Istanbul gathering where the 57 member countries recognized East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state in response to the US move. King Abdullah, who holds the title of custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, has previously slammed Trump for his decision on Jerusalem.

Riyadh, also one of the OIC members who signed the Istanbul communique, hasn’t otherwise been among the most vocal critics of the recognition of Jerusalem by the US. The Saudis’ relations with Washington have improved under Trump due to his firm stance on Iran, the main geopolitical rival of both Saudi Arabia and Israel.

‘I will get Putin on this program and we will get Donald elected’: Trump’s lawyer is at the center of questions about his ties to a Russian businessman https://briefnews.eu/i-will-get-putin-on-this-program-and-we-will-get-donald-elected-trumps-lawyer-is-at-the-center-of-questions-about-his-ties-to-a-russian-businessman/ https://briefnews.eu/i-will-get-putin-on-this-program-and-we-will-get-donald-elected-trumps-lawyer-is-at-the-center-of-questions-about-his-ties-to-a-russian-businessman/#respond Tue, 29 Aug 2017 03:10:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/i-will-get-putin-on-this-program-and-we-will-get-donald-elected-trumps-lawyer-is-at-the-center-of-questions-about-his-ties-to-a-russian-businessman/ Michael CohenA former associate of President Donald Trump boasted in emails to Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, that a proposed Moscow real-estate deal would “get Donald elected.”
Cohen then wrote an email to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, asking for his “assistance” in the project.
The emails were exchanged between November 2015-January 2016, months into Trump’s presidential campaign.

The Russian-born businessman who pushed for the Trump Organization to pursue a massive real-estate deal in Moscow during the 2016 presidential election was spotted at Trump Tower months after the deal allegedly fell apart.

The businessman, Felix Sater, told Politico at the time that the purpose of his visit last August was “confidential.” But his presence there seven months after the Moscow real-estate deal fell through, and less than three months before Election Day, raises questions about who in President Donald Trump’s orbit he was still in touch with — and why.

Some answers could lie in a referral from the White House on Sunday night. Asked to comment on reports that the Trump Organization had pursued this deal, a senior administration official first directed questions to Trump’s lawyer in the Russia investigation, Ty Cobb.

Minutes later, the official backtracked and referred questions to Stephen Ryan, the lawyer for Michael Cohen — Trump’s personal attorney at the time the Moscow deal was reportedly pursued. Ryan did not respond to a request for comment.

Cohen, who was the executive vice president of the Trump Organization until he resigned from his post there in January to serve as Trump’s personal lawyer on a full-time basis, had been in touch with Sater about the Moscow deal, according to The Washington Post.

Emails exchanged between Sater and Cohen in November 2015 indicate that they were preparing to celebrate not only Trump’s election victory, but also the potential Russia deal.

Sater boasted of his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the emails, which were obtained by The New York Times on Monday, telling Cohen that he will “get all of Putins team to buy in” on the Moscow deal.

“Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it,” Sater wrote, according to the Times. “I will get Putin on this program and we will get Donald elected.”

Sater told Talking Points Memo earlier this month that his “last Moscow deal for the Trump Organization was in October of 2015” and it “didn’t go through because obviously he became president.” The Trump Organization, which employed Cohen at the time, had signed a letter of intent to pursue the deal, according to the Post.

Cohen told the Times that Sater “sometimes used colorful language and has been prone to ‘salesmanship,'” adding that he “ultimately determined that the proposal was not feasible and never agreed to make a trip to Russia.”

But that Cohen, who has been called Trump’s “pit bull,” was in touch with Sater as late as November 2015 indicates that the Trump Organization’s relationship with Sater went deeper than Trump let on that December.

“Felix Sater, boy, I have to even think about it,” Trump told The Associated Press at the time. “I’m not that familiar with him.”

Sater, who was accused nearly two decades ago of being a conspirator in a $ 40 million fraud and money-laundering scheme involving four Mafia families, began advising the Trump Organization while he was an executive at the real-estate firm Bayrock in the early 2000s. He began scoping out deals for the Trump Organization in Russia in 2005, and accompanied Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, and son Donald Jr. to Moscow in 2006.

Trump testified under oath in 2007 that Bayrock frequently brought Russian investors to his Trump Tower office to discuss deals in Moscow, and when Sater joined the Trump Organization in 2010, he was given a business card that said “senior advisor.”‘

By 2013, however, Trump was denying having any close ties to Sater at all. Trump said in a sworn deposition in 2013 that he wouldn’t recognize Sater if they were in the same room, and he bristled when a BBC reporter asked him that year about his connection to the Russian-born businessman.

“I know who he is. I know of him and I know who he is,” Trump said, before walking out of the interview.

‘Interesting as it relates to Michael Cohen’

The revelations will likely give the FBI and the House and Senate intelligence committees more reason to dig into Cohen’s past. The congressional committees asked Cohen in May to provide information about his contacts with Russian officials, and he is reportedly under scrutiny by the FBI.

Former assistant US attorney and longtime federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti said Sunday night that he thought the report about the Trump Organization pursuing the Moscow deal was “interesting as it relates to Michael Cohen, who allegedly had unusual contacts with Russia much later on.”

Mariotti said he wasn’t surprised that the Trump Organization had a potential investment in Russia, and that whether or not special counsel Robert Mueller — who is overseeing the FBI’s probe into Russia’s election interference — finds the information relevant will depend on whether Trump knew anything about the deal himself.

But given that the deal “got scuttled,” Mariotti said, “it’s mostly relevant for giving context to what people like Cohen did later.”

Cohen evidently maintained contact with Sater through at least January 2017. One week after Trump was inaugurated, Cohen and Sater met with a Ukrainian lawmaker at a New York City hotel to discuss a potential Russia-Ukraine peace plan that would involve lifting sanctions on Russia.

Both Cohen and Sater’s wives are Ukrainian, and the lawmaker they met with, Andrii Artemenko, told Business Insider in interviews earlier this year that he felt it was his patriotic duty to find a peaceful solution to the war.

Cohen acknowledged in a series of text messages to Business Insider at the time that he met with Sater and Artemenko in New York for “under 10 minutes” to discuss a proposal that Artemenko said “was acknowledged by Russian authorities that would create world peace.”

Cohen was mentioned in an explosive but unverified collection of memos detailing the Trump campaign’s ties to the Kremlin that was published in full by BuzzFeed in January. The memos, which cited high-level Kremlin officials British spy Christopher Steele said he cultivated during his time on MI6’s Moscow desk, alleged that Cohen served as a go-between for the campaign and Moscow during the election.

Cohen has denied the charge and insists he has never been to Prague, where the dossier said he met with “Kremlin representatives” in “August/September 2016.”

But the revelations about the Moscow deal “looks very bad for team Trump,” said Andrew Wright, a professor at Savannah Law School who served in the White House as associate counsel to President Barack Obama.

“It stands in stark contrast to all Trump’s blanket denials about contacts with Russia,” Wright said.

“If true, these contacts demonstrates a nexus between Trump Organization business dealings and US policy toward Russia and Ukraine,” Wright said. “It also presents a number of further evidence trails that Mueller’s team will feel compelled to pursue.”

Philippine’s to disband anti-drug police units after rogue agents kill South Korean businessman https://briefnews.eu/philippines-to-disband-anti-drug-police-units-after-rogue-agents-kill-south-korean-businessman/ https://briefnews.eu/philippines-to-disband-anti-drug-police-units-after-rogue-agents-kill-south-korean-businessman/#respond Sun, 29 Jan 2017 19:05:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/philippines-to-disband-anti-drug-police-units-after-rogue-agents-kill-south-korean-businessman/ Rodrigo DuterteREUTERS/Romeo Ranoco

The Philippines police will disband anti-drugs units following the killing of a South Korean businessmen by rogue officers, but the country’s president vowed on Sunday to forge ahead with his war on drugs until the last day of his term.

President Rodrigo Duterte said he was embarrassed that anti-drugs officers had abused their power to engage in kidnapping, leading to the death by strangulation of Jee Ick-joo, on the grounds of the national police headquarters.

Duterte said other suspects were still at large and gave them 48 hours to turn themselves in, or have a dead-or-alive bounty on their heads of 5 million pesos ($ 100,000), for which he would prefer them dead.

His police chief, Ronald dela Rosa, said the breakup of anti-drugs units was necessary to rebuild them, but it could disrupt the progress of the campaign.

“We will dissolve all anti-drugs units in the police,” he told a joint news conference with Duterte, when asked if he would overhaul the police.

“I will do my job to the best of my ability I hope I will not fail the president and the Filipino people.”

More than 7,000 people have been killed since Duterte, nicknamed “the punisher”, unleashed his bloody crackdown seven months ago, some 2,250 in police operations and the rest still mostly under investigation.

His six-year term ends in 2022.

Police say many of those so far unsolved could be the work of vigilantes or inter-gang drugs violence.

The campaign has caused alarm in the West and rights groups accuse Duterte of turning a blind eye to a wave of extrajudicial killings by police, mostly of low-level peddlers. Police deny that and say the killings are in self-defence.

Duterte said police who had been subject of internal investigations should be reassigned to work in conflict zones.

Fighting drugs and crime was the key platform of Duterte’s election campaign, during which he promised to eradicate illicit drugs within six months.

He said he underestimated the depth of problem, and on Sunday promised the crackdown would continue to the end of his six-year presidency, and criticism would not stop him.

“I do not give a s—, I have a duty to do, and I will do it,” he said.
