  • Edinburgh airport will temporarily close its airspace when the Queen's coffin is flown to London.
  • Some flights due to leave on Tuesday afternoon will be grounded, delayed, or canceled.
  • The Queen's coffin is currently traveling across the UK before her funeral on September 19.

Scotland's busiest airport plans to temporarily close its airspace on Tuesday to ensure Queen Elizabeth II's coffin is transported to London safely.

Although the airport will remain open to passengers during this time, the airspace closure will mean some flights are grounded, delayed, or canceled on Tuesday afternoon, the airport confirmed to local media outlet Edinburgh Live. 

Representatives for Edinburgh airport did not immediately respond to Insider's request for confirmation.

Scottish regional airport, Loganair, warned travelers that some flights had been rescheduled.

The company said via a Facebook post: "If you're traveling with us to or from Edinburgh on Tuesday 13 September, some Loganair flights have been re-timed or combined due to closure of the airport during the late afternoon to enable HM The Queen's final journey from Scotland to take place."

The airline also warned passengers traveling to the airport that there will be "several road closures and likely more traffic and congestion than normal." 

The late Queen's coffin is currently traveling across the UK before her funeral in London on Monday 19 September. 

On Sunday, the Queen's coffin traveled by road to Edinburgh's Palace of Holyrood from Balmoral Castle where she died on Thursday. It was laid to rest overnight in the Palace and will be moved on Monday to lie in St Giles' Cathedral until Tuesday afternoon when it is flown to London, the Mirror reported.

The coffin is due to land at a Royal Air Force base in London at 6:00 p.m. It will then travel by hearse to Westminster Hall, where it will lie in state until the funeral, with the public able to visit the coffin and pay their respects.

Ticketmaster have confirmed that the band’s comeback tour – scheduled for summer 2019 – was their busiest ever sale. At one point, a rep confirmed, over 700,000 people were in the online queue. The girls had announced six dates, which quickly became ten when demand proved to be exceptional.

Andrew Parsons, managing director at Ticketmaster, said according to Metro: “Demand for Spice Girls was off the chart. They have smashed through Ticketmaster UK’s records becoming the busiest ever sale.

“There were millions of people on our site searching for tickets, with a queue at one point of well over 700,000.

“Hundreds of thousands of tickets were sold to happy fans across the country within minutes. Congratulations to the girls.

“From what we saw, they could have played nearly every night for a year.”

Stunned Melanie C tweeted: “I know you’ve been bombarded with promo stuff lately but I just wanted to say I’m completely overwhelmed with the response to our tour. Wow!

“I did not expect that. It’s going to be AMAZING!! Thank you so much! #SpiceUpYourLife.”

The Spice Girls will be accompanied by Jess Glynne at all ten of the concerts, which begin in Manchester on May 29 and end in London on June 15.

They are expected to announce international dates in due course.

Easter falling early this year means it is likely to be one of the busiest bank holiday weekends in recent years, a motoring firm has warned.

More than four out of five (81 percent) UK motorists are planning a leisure trip by car over the weekend, according to an AA poll of more than 20,000 people.

This equates to nearly 26 million drivers on the road.

The AA believes the longer gap between Easter and summer is encouraging more people to take advantage of the four-day weekend.

Bank holiday getaway traffic is expected to peak on Saturday, with 66% of motorists driving to a holiday destination or leisure outing.

AA patrol of the year Vince Crane urged families to carry out essential vehicle checks and pack sufficient supplies in case they are affected by gridlocked traffic or severe weather.

He said: “As well as your snacks and road trip playlist, pack some must-haves for long journeys like a sat-nav or atlas, a fully charged mobile phone and any time-dependent medication in case of delays.

“With the Met Office signalling the possibility of a return of the Beast from the East, don’t take your winter emergency kit out of the car just yet. That snow shovel may still come in handy.”

Highways England is removing 300 miles of roadworks from England’s motorways and major A-roads to ease the flow of traffic.

About 99 percent of the network will be open in time for Easter, the Government-owned company said.

Services on some of Britain’s busiest rail routes will be suspended during the weekend due to engineering work.

More than 400 projects will be carried out as part of a £118 million investment by Network Rail.

Passengers travelling between London and Scotland via the West Coast Main Line between Saturday and Monday will have to use replacement buses between Glasgow and either Carlisle or Preston, depending on the day of travel.

London Euston, the UK’s fifth busiest station, will be closed on Sunday, with a reduced service on the previous and following day.

Significant work in the Bristol area means no trains will run between Bristol Parkway, Bristol Temple Meads and Yatton/Bath Spa from Friday to Tuesday April 3.

There will also be disruption to services between London Liverpool Street and Norwich, as well as routes serving London Paddington.

Network Rail said it schedules engineering work for bank holidays as there are fewer passengers than normal on those days.

David MacIntyre is a trauma surgeon who was on call on Sunday at the trauma unit in Las Vegas’ Sunrise Hospital. Due to its proximity to the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest festival, Sunrise took on more critical patients than any other facility in Las Vegas. In an interview on Tuesday, MacIntyre told me how the night played out from his perspective. His account has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

I’m the trauma surgeon on call, so I’m physically in house for 24 hours. Around 10:00 we got a page that we had a mass casualty shooting on the Strip, and we all mobilized to the trauma bay. Once we got to the trauma bay, people started showing up. We activated, called the other surgeons to come in, and everybody mobilized very quickly.

I didn’t expect this volume. I didn’t expect to see 214 people show up.

There were a lot of gunshot wounds to the head and chest. Those are the first ones I saw. These are the people that were scooped up by the citizens here in Las Vegas in their vans and their pickup trucks. They drove them up here to the hospital very quickly. Those are the first ones we saw. Then the ambulances started coming in. They had three or four people in each of the ambulances that they were dropping off.

Of the 214 patients, there were around 137 treated and released. A majority of these are the ones we took to the operating room: 10 gunshot wounds to the head, we had eight chests they went to the operating room, we had 13 abdominal wounds that went to the operating room, we had 17 orthopedic injuries that went to the operating, and then we had 33 others. Those are like wounds to the neck or to the major extremities.

The first that came in was a gunshot wound to the head and chest. Then I had 10 more patients. Then I had another 10. It was really fast. It felt like seconds.

Being triage, it’s very quick. I ask you, “What’s your name?” You’re not talking to me and you’re not breathing—you’re immediately going to get intubated and we’re going to figure out what’s wrong with you. Those that were stable and talking and answered my questions—that were breathing—we would prop them up and then we’d put them over in an area and we made them comfortable, and we focused on those that weren’t talking to us, intubating them and putting chest tubes in, delegating to the operating room or to the intensive care unit.

I was triage, so I just directed everybody to the operating room. I’d say I saw at least 70 or 80 people in the first hour. Then the ER doctors had their walking wounded, the gunshot wounds to the arms and legs—they didn’t have any major injuries to the head, or chest, or belly. Those all came to me.

All the injuries that I saw were things that I’ve been trained to deal with. We just had so many of them—that’s the part that really was overwhelming.

This was 191 people, like that. I’ve gone through many classes on mass casualty. You don’t think about it. You hone in. But I started getting nervous, say, three, four hours into it. I was like, People are still coming in.

This was the largest mass [shooting] incident in the entire history of the United States and we were able to absorb all those patients into our center. A lot of talented people came together and rose to the occasion. It was amazing. I mean from housekeeping to neurosurgery, all doing one thing.

We did have a police officer that we lost. That was probably the hardest thing I saw. The police department was in there with him—they didn’t leave him. We had a morgue set up by the operating room. They had one officer in full uniform holding the American flag folded up, and he stood with that downed officer the entire time he was with us. We had 15 fatalities and some of those were dead on arrival so they never went through the triage on my side—they were already gone.

Drones and airports usually go together like oil and water, but you can’t say that about Atlanta’s air hub. The city has formed a partnership with 3DR, Autodesk and engineering firm Atkins that has drones mapping Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport as part of a planned expansion. The key to making it work was Site Scan, 3DR’s autonomous data capturing tech. The drones could capture 2D mosaics and 3D point scans while staying well away from the airliners — no mean feat when they’re flying between runways at the busiest airport in the world (over 100 million passengers per year).

If anything, the biggest challenge was getting the green light from extra-wary FAA regulators. Site Scan helped convince the FAA that the mapping drones wouldn’t fly into harm’s way, but the approval also demanded that the drone operators stay in constant contact with air traffic control and submit to controllers’ authority.

The effort should pay dividends before long. The maps and models will help with both demolishing old locations and the early designs for their replacements. Also, 3DR hopes that the lessons it learned in getting FAA clearance will help with other commercial drone outfits. It recently published some learning tools that could give other companies a helping hand, so projects like this may soon be run-of-the-mill.
