Turkey has been devastated by tornados this week, with the southern province of Antalya enduring much damage. Antalya is a resort city highly popular with Britons keen to escape to the Mediterranean. Shocking video footage captured the fifth Tornado in four days hitting Antalya’s international airport. The alarming clip shows the 100kmph twister rampaging cross the airport causing havoc in its wake. Planes can be seen propelled from the force of the tornado while two buses and a minibus are completely flipped. Two sets of airstairs are toppled in the video from the strength of the high winds. Debris can also be seen hurled across the airport as the twister shifts. Authorities said 12 people were injured in the tornado when a bus transferring passengers to the plane was overturned. None are believed to be in a critical condition. The shocking footage of the tornado was captured by travellers at the airport. Antalya Governor Münir Karaloğlu told Turkish news channel NTV two planes and a police helicopter suffered significant damage in the storm. An Airbus A321-231 belonging to Onur Air, and a Boeing 737-MAX8 belonging to Corendon Airline were the two planes damaged. After the storm, authorities surveyed the damaged and cleaned up the airport to avoid further delays, Karaloğlu said. He told Daily Sabah yesterday he hoped the worst was now over and air traffic had returned to normal. A total of 229 buildings had sustained damage due to the extreme weather, Environment and Urbanisation Minister Murat Kurum said. Tornados in Turkey are a rare occurrence and tend to be sighted at sea rather than on land. Turkey holidays are rocketing in popularity with Britons thanks to the low prices available in the Middle Eastern country. The annual Post Office Holiday Money Report revealed the renewed popularity of Turkey is the most striking travel trend of the year. This comes after the Turkish lira collapsed in value last year meaning Britons’ pounds can go further in Turkey, making for much cheaper holidays. The ongoing weakness of the Turkish lira means holidaymakers can expect their pounds to stretch almost 29 per cent further in Turkey than a year ago. Marmaris, a Mediterranean resort town along the Turkish Riviera, is in the top three cheapest European beach destinations. Prices have fallen 18.7 per cent since last year. According to Post Office figures, a cup of filter coffee costs just 96p in Turkey compared to £1.91 in Mexico or £2.30 in Greece.

The UK won’t sit idly by while the US, Japan and China put self-driving vehicles on their roads. The country’s government has announced an ambitious driverless public transport plan for 2021, including autonomous buses in Scotland and self-driving taxis in several of London’s boroughs, with state funding to the tune of £25 million ($ 33 million).
Scotland’s first self-driving buses — which could provide up to 10,000 journeys a week between Fife and Edinburgh across the Forth Bridge — will get £4.35m ($ 5.6 million) of those funds. Initially, the single-decker buses will require a human driver to be present at all times, with unmanned tests limited to the depot. The autonomous buses will be able to carry up to 42 passengers for the 14-mile journey and will operate every 20 minutes, according to the BBC.
In London, private cab company Addison Lee will receive state backing to expand its autonomous taxi trials in Greenwich to cover the entirety of the borough by 2021. It’s currently working with self-driving software specialist Oxbotica to digitally map public roads in the capital. The move sees it taking on rival Uber, which has resumed self-driving car tests in the US (but only in manual mode) after temporarily halting them following a fatal accident in Tempe, Arizona earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover is also prepping a “premium mobility service” in London using six driverless Discovery cars. Details on the venture are scarce, but the auto-maker has already started semi-autonomous parking trials on the capital’s public roads. Those tests form part of the UK’s Autodrive research projects, which also include the Lutz Pathfinder pod and partnerships with Ford and Tata. The country also finalized the Vehicle Technology and Aviation Bill in 2017 with guidelines on autonomous car insurance and provisions for electric vehicle charging points.

American politics has always been about spectacle, and with Tuesday’s midterm elections watched closer than any in recent memory, candidates have been dredging the bottom of the barrel for creative and attention-grabbing ideas.
Here we take a look back at the political ads that, for better or worse, stood out from the pack during this election season.
Washington DC has been called a ‘dumpster fire’ more times than lazy journalists have used bad similes. In case the comparison makes no sense, former George W. Bush ethics counsel and Minnesota Senate candidate Richard Painter demonstrated it visually this summer.
“Some people see a dumpster fire and do nothing but watch the spectacle,” Painter deadpans to the camera, as he stands in front of an actual, flaming dumpster. “Some are too scared to face the danger. Or they think it’ll benefit them if they just let it keep on burning.
“There is an inferno raging in Washington. But here in the land of 10,000 lakes – we know how to put out a fire,” he says, as a torrent of water pours down from above and extinguishes the flames.
Painter’s unflinching stare borders on intimidating, and the steely eyed Senate hopeful was ridiculed online for his ad. Painter didn’t scare anyone into voting for him, and he captured only 13 percent of the Democratic vote in his party’s primary election in August, falling way behind businesswoman Tina Smith’s 76 percent take.
Somehow this is a real campaign commercial for Richard Painter. The complete psychopathic stare at the end really sells it. Good luck getting votes from this commercial. 😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/5kZcK0IsPv

Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis’ race against progressive, Bernie Sanders-endorsed hotshot Andrew Gillum has been described as a kind of litmus test for America. Endorsed by the president, DeSantis has been keen to show off just how devoted he is to following Trump’s agenda, at work and at home.
In an August campaign video, DeSantis enjoys an array of wholesome activities with his children, like teaching his daughter to “build the wall,” and reading President Trump’s ‘The Art of the Deal’ to his infant son.
“Then Mister Trump said, ‘You’re fired,’” he tells the boy. “I love that part.” The adoring father then teaches his daughter to read “Make America Great Again” from a campaign poster.
DeSantis’ campaign has since been stained by racial controversy, but the race to the governor’s mansion remains a tight one. Polls currently put Gillum ahead by two points.
Michael Williams, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, knows how to make a statement. In a video since pulled by YouTube for ‘hate speech’ violations, Williams steps off a prison transport bus rebranded as the ‘deportation bus,’ promising to “fill this bus with illegals to send them back to where they came from.”
“We’re not just gonna track them and watch them roam around our state. We’re gonna put them on this bus and send ‘em home!”
The bus itself is emblazoned with a warning that reads “DANGER! Murderers, rapists, kidnappers, child molestors, and other criminals on board,” as well as “Follow me to Mexico.”
Naturally, Twitter reacted with shock, bewilderment, and accusations of racism.
While Williams’ bus toured the length and breadth of the state of Georgia drumming up support for his hardline anti-immigration platform, the message fell flat. Williams came in last place in his party’s primary election in May, capturing only five percent of the vote.
It wouldn’t be a list of crazy campaign ads without bringing in the Democratic party’s tired attempt to blame the world’s ills on Russia. In this case, a Democratic PAC released a parody ad, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulates Republican House candidate Dana Rohrabacher for his loyalty to the motherland.
“You are a true Russian hero,” a proud female voiceover reads. “Thank you Dana Rohrabacher for standing with Putin and Russia!”
Rohrabacher and Democratic opponent Harley Rouda are currently neck-and-neck in the polls, despite the Democratic PAC’s spot of Russophobic meddling.
House Democratic candidate Dan Helmer’s ill-advised attempt to recreate his favorite ‘Top Gun’ scene has it all: pumping music, a grand entrance, and cringe-inducing singing.
Decked out in aviators and a bomber jacket, Helmer rides up to a bar on his motorcycle. So far, so badass. Inside, he spots Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock and launches into a crudely reworded and tuneless rendition of ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.’
Among other shoehorned lyrics: “You’ve lost that centrist feeling… ’cause you’ve been right-wing appealing.”
Helmer’s video didn’t take voters’ breath away, and the high-flying democrat lost out to State Senator Jennifer Wexton in Virginia’s Democratic primary in June.
The shortlist of ill-advised campaign videos is infinite, with candidates all across the country seemingly eager to create scandal and embarrass themselves in front of millions of potential voters.
Honorable mentions that didn’t quite make the cut include this Colorado House candidate pepper spraying himself to stop school shootings; this Georgia Republican’s guns, trucks and chainsaws conservative manifesto; and this West Virginia Republican’s assertion that Senate Majority Leader “Cocaine Mitch” McConnell has created “millions of jobs for Chinapeople.”

The global fleet of electric buses is already helping cities avoiding the purchase of 279,000 barrels of oil per day, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). Diesel buses consume an extraordinary amount of fuel compared to a passenger vehicle. Bloomberg noted that “For every 1,000 battery-powered buses on the road, about 500 barrels a day of diesel fuel will be displaced from the market.”
Still, global oil consumption is going up, though maybe not as fast as it might have without electric buses. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), total global oil consumption increased from 96.87 million barrels per day in 2016 to 98.52 million barrels per day in 2017. The EIA projects that the world will consume 100.31 million barrels per day in 2018.
There’s still reason for optimism though, especially given the aggressive push for electric vehicles in some Chinese cities like Shenzhen. The country accounts for 99 percent of the electric buses in the world (though in the country itself, only 17 percent of that fleet is electric). In addition, Bloomberg reports that “every five weeks, Chinese cities add 9,500 of the zero-emissions transporters—the equivalent of London’s entire working fleet.” Those statistics seem to confirm an earlier report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which noted that in 2016, China had an extraordinary 200 million electric two-wheelers, 3 million to 4 million low-speed electric vehicles, and more than 300,000 electric buses.

The my15 trentbarton service will be adding extra pick-up points across South Derbyshire, North-West Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, as well as other places in the East Midlands region, helping holidaymakers beat expensive airport parking charges and reach the airport on schedule.
The changes came into effect on Sunday March 25, including new stops at Shardlow and Castle Donington which go directly to the airport.
It also connects holidaymakers starting from Ilkeston, Stapleford and Sandiarce.
The service will run hourly from 5am to midnight, seven days a week and cost £5 one-way or £10 return.
It’s great news for the 4.3 million passengers that pass through the airport every year.
However, “it’s not just for jet setters”, a press release from trentbarton says.
“10,000 people work at or near East Midlands Airport and a potential 20,000 new jobs are set to be created at the largest pure freight airport in the UK”.
It will also “play a vital role in connecting Erewash [a local borough in east Derbyshire] to jobs, and the beaches across Europe”.
It’s expected the new route will take around one hour between Ilkeston, in Derbyshire and East Midlands Airport, although it peak times this may rise to one hour and fifteen minutes.
The exciting new service is also expected to increase job opportunities in the region, with the potential to create 20,000 new jobs.
The news coincides with the creation of 1,400 jobs thanks to the building of a new UPS parcel sorting and delivery complex next door.
Tom Morgan, director of service delivery at trentbarton, said to Burton Mail: “Linking local communities to such a developing employment hub is incredibly important for the region and should have a positive effect on the local economies. We are very excited by the changes and expect them to be warmly received by our customers.
“There are of course some things that won’t change, such as our friendly passionate driving team, who have become renowned for delivering excellent customer service over a number of years.”
Despite the airport closing last week due severe weather conditions caused by the ‘Beast from the East’ and Storm Emma last week, East Midlands is back up and open for business as usual.
The airport, located in Leicestershire, flies to over 90 business and leisure destinations including Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh. It also flies to summer sun destinations in Europe such as Lanzarote, Malaga and Tenerife. East Midlands Airport is a vibrant hub, drawing in 6,000 jobs and generating £300 million for the region.
Shuttle buses carrying Apple and Google employees have been attacked with what police believe were either BB guns or rocks. Following the incident Apple said that some of its buses were temporarily rerouted.
The incidents occurred while buses carrying Apple and Google employees were driving in both directions of Interstate 280 in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California on Tuesday morning and evening, California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Several bus windows sustained damage possibly caused by pellet guns, BB guns or rocks, Montiel added. No one was injured in the incidents.
“This is a serious issue because if this happened to distract the driver — the driver could collide and we could have a multiple vehicle crash at the same time it could cause major injuries to the passengers of the bus and other drivers,” Montiel later told KTVU channel.
At least four of the vandalized shuttle buses were chartered by Apple, whose corporate headquarters are located off I-280 in Cupertino city in California’s Silicon Valley. The fifth belonged to Google, whose campus is in Mountain View, some 8 km from Cupertino. All of the buses were unmarked.
Following the incidents Apple sent an e-mail to its employees, saying that its coaches had been temporarily rerouted. “This change in routes could mean an additional 30-45 minutes of commute time in each direction for some riders,” the tech giant said in e-mail, seen by Mashable. Apple later told Mashable that it is working with police to investigate the incidents.

Los Angeles wants to field a completely electric fleet of buses by 2030, and it just took a large step toward making that a reality. The city’s Department of Transportation (which runs the largest municipal transit in the county) has acquired 25 of Proterra’s smaller 35-foot Catalyst buses, all of which should arrive in 2019. That may not sound like much, but it’s a significant chunk of the DOT’s 359-bus fleet. The deal promises real savings, too — it should eliminate 7.8 million lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions per year and save $ 11.2 million in energy and maintenance over 12 years.
This isn’t the first step toward electrifying mass transit in the LA area, but is one of the larger examples. The DOT unveiled just four buses at the start of 2017, for example, so this is certainly a much larger commitment. And notably, it’s not just from an American company — it’s from a company whose manufacturing is even located in the county. The region’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority bought 95 buses in July, but they were split between Chinese transportation giant BYD and the American division of Canada’s New Flyer.
It’d represent a big order for Proterra as well. At the start of 2017, it had received 375 bus orders. This is a big deal for a firm that’s still hitting its stride, and shows that it’s earning the trust of some major cities. Don’t be surprised if its buses become more of a mainstay going forward.

A gigantic ‘fatberg’ – the weight of 11 double-decker buses – has been discovered in an East London sewer.
The stomach-churning contents include discarded wet wipes, nappies, fat and oil – in a congealed mass which weighs 130 tons.
The 250-meter-long ‘fatberg’ is more than twice the length of two football pitches and was found lodged in Whitechapel’s waterways.
A massive operation to remove the record-breaking berg from the Victorian sewer system will take three weeks.
“This fatberg is up there with the biggest we’ve ever seen. It’s a total monster and taking a lot of manpower and machinery to remove as it’s set hard,” Thames Water quoted Head of Waste Networks Matt Rimmer in a statement.
“It’s basically like trying to break up concrete.
“It’s frustrating as these situations are totally avoidable and caused by fat, oil and grease being washed down sinks and wipes flushed down the loo [toilet].”
A massive 20 to 30 tons will be removed from the fat mass under Whitechapel Road by an eight-man crew, every day.
The berg will be recycled after it is battered with hoses to break it down and sucked up using machinery.
“We check our sewers routinely, but these things can build up really quickly and cause big problems with flooding. The sewers are not an abyss for household rubbish” Rimmer said.
Thames Water spends about £1 million (US$ 1.33 million) a month clearing blockages from its sewers, despite clear warnings on how to dispose of household waste.
CCTV camera inspections revealed the 1200mm-high by 700mm-wide sewer was totally blocked by the fatberg, which is 3.5 meters below ground.
Thames Water said work will continue throughout September until the sewer is clear.
