NEW DELHI (AP) — Police said they have mapped the area of a remote Indian island where tribespeople were seen burying the body of an American adventurer and Christian missionary after allegedly killing him with arrows this month.

But before they can even attempt to recover the body of 26-year-old John Allen Chau, authorities have to learn from experts “the nuances of the group’s conduct and behavior, particularly in this kind of violent behavior,” said Dependra Pathak, the director-general of police of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where North Sentinel Island is located.

A Dutch firm has been commissioned by the Norwegian government to bury a sunken Nazi submarine in sand to stop the 1,800 barrels of toxic chemicals onboard from leaking into the sea.

More than 60 years after the 2,400-ton U-boat was torpedoed by the British Navy off the coast of Norway, the vessel continues to leak dangerous mercury from rusted containers resting 500 feet (152 meters) below the surface.

About 4 kilograms (8lbs) of the toxic mental oozes into the water each year, contaminating 30,000 square metres of seabed, high numbers of fish and enforcing a boat and fishing ban in the area about two miles off the coast of Bergen.

Now, a Dutch company Van Oord has been hired to bury the wreck, and 11 acres of the seabed, in 100,000 tons of rubble to stem the leakage. The burial operation, expected to cost up to $ 32 million, will start next year and finish in 2020. Researchers say the technique has been effective in containing about 30 mercury-contaminated sites over the last 20 years.

Previously described as an “underwater Chernobyl” by a spokeswoman for the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the process is not a permanent solution, but simply a delaying tactic for the the 65 tons of metallic mercury that will be leaking into the sea for decades to come. Campaigners reportedly wanted the wreck to be brought ashore but authorities deemed the suggestions to be too risky as the bottles could break up as they were moved.

U-864 was struck in early 1945 as it headed for Japan carrying jet parts, killing all 73 crew members onboard. It was first discovered in March 2003 by by a Royal Norwegian Navy minesweeper after being alerted by local fisherman.

It’s no secret that President Trump came into office rejecting the conclusions of the vast majority of the world’s scientists when it comes to our changing climate. But it wasn’t clear how that would translate to policy. At least some of his advisors, as well as his daughter, accept the conclusions of the scientific community. And there was the possibility that policy decisions would be constrained by reality, as Trump was sworn in as the most recent global temperature records were set.

Over the past few weeks, however, it has become increasingly clear that there’s been extensive push back against climate change throughout the government, with several occurring in the last week alone. We’ll review those briefly below.

MILAN (AP) — A five-story apartment block has collapsed near the southern Italian city of Naples, and authorities are working to find anyone who may have been trapped.

Firefighters told Sky TG24 that six or seven people are believed to be buried in the rubble in the town of Torre Annunziata.

The news agency ANSA quoted witnesses as saying that there was no explosion before the collapse Friday morning but that a train had just passed by on adjacent train tracks.

Images show the structure partially collapsed, revealing the interior of some apartments. Firefighters on long, retractable ladders were checking the stability of an adjacent building in the residential neighborhood.

Researchers in the US have witnessed a practice never before recorded on film – an American badger using its digging skills to corner the ‘scavenger market’ and bury a whole cow.

A University of Utah study suggests that the hardy omnivores may actually have a nose for economics, with one particular badger hiding a dead cow from competitors in Utah’s Great Basin Desert to eat later. 

The practice has been likened to how an entrepreneur might monopolize an industry and, according to researchers, represents a remarkable never-before-seen example of a badger burying an animal larger than itself.

Study author Evan R. Buechley and his colleagues had initially intended to document the behavior of vultures out in Utah’s Grassy Mountains in January 2016.

But after setting camera traps and staking seven cow carcasses to the ground in the harsh, deserted region, the team was stunned to find that one of the bodies had gone missing during the very first week.

“When I first got there I was bummed because it’s hard to get these carcasses, to haul them out and set them up,” Buechley told UNews. “I thought, ‘Oh, well we’ve lost one after a week.’”

However, on further investigation it was found that the cow had in fact been placed in a shallow grave by none other than a tireless badger.

“We didn’t go out to study badgers specifically, but the badger declared itself to us,” Buechley added.

Footage captured by the University of Utah shows how the sharp-clawed American badger worked day and night to commandeer the cow carcass and secure it in an underground pit.

“There’s not a lot of resources out there. A large dead ungulate can provide a ton of resources. So far on the carcasses we’ve put out, we’ve had turkey vultures, golden eagles, many ravens, bobcat, kit fox and coyote, so there’s a lot of animals that could be using this resource, and the badger just monopolizes it,” said Buechley.

Another incident of badger-cattle burial was also recorded in the ‘Subterranean caching of domestic cow carcasses’ study. However, on that occasion the cow’s carcass was only partially buried.
