RELATED STORIES

On Friday’s Drag Race All Stars, RuPaul gave the girls a sewing challenge and she gave us what we like.(Sorry.) But before the remaining five queens could strut their stuff at the Charles Family Backyard Ball, they had some issues to work through.

Picking up shortly after India Ferrah’s elimination, the episode began with Alexis Mateo tearfully thanking the girls for standing by her after last week’s scandal. Because only one person (India) voted to send her home, Alexis assumed that no one believed India’s claims of a conspiracy against Shea Coulee. However, Shea was quick to clarify that she strongly considered giving Alexis the chop and that she’d be keeping an eye on her moving forward.

The India-Alexis drama came up a second time when the queens discovered personalized letters from India at their work stations. None of the letters were especially, ahem, noteworthy… except for one: “Alexis, I still love you,” India wrote. “Open your heart.” After reading the oddly cryptic message a few times, Alexis said what we were all thinking: “You don’t love me, bitch.” Accurate.

Then came this week’s maxi challenge: Using store-bought backyard accoutrements, the queens had to create characters (complete with backstories and earth-shattering family secrets!) to attend Ru’s down-home soiree. This would be followed by a “backyard eleganza” runway, to which Jujubee posed a very fair question: “What the f–k is backyard eleganza? I don’t have a backyard. I live in Boston.”

The end result, like most family gatherings, was a mixed bag of nuts. Miz Cracker had the judges laughing as Ru’s evil cousin on the hunt for a kidney, Jujubee and her big floppy hat made an iconic entrance (“Sorry I’m late, I didn’t want to come!”); Blair’s “stanky” character brought enough baby food and amoxicillin for everyone; Shea (aka Shea-quita, aka “Li’l Kiki”) rocked a Grandrea Zuckerwoman shirt; and Alexis played a… salsa-dancing beauty student? It was a choice.

Overall, the queens found more success on the runway this week. Cracker brought Fifth Avenue to the backyard with an upscale-yet-sporty look, Jujubee rocked a fruity little number, dubbing herself “the watermelon lady”; Blair gave us a half-baked taste of “high-fashion couture”; Shea served backyard bridal realness; and Alexis donned a big red dress… with a baby pool underneath. Another choice! (Shout-out to Shea for apparently helping most of her competitors, by the way. When I heard her say “If one of us looks good, we all look good,” I couldn’t help but wonder… is it possible for a queen to win the whole season and take home Miss Congeniality?)

Drag Race All Stars RecapGiven her consistent performances in both the challenge and the runway this week, Cracker was a no-brainer pick for top All Star. But could she stand her ground against lip sync assassin Roxxxy Andrews? Cracker put up a pretty decent fight, but the minute Roxxxy dropped her feather coat — let alone when she stripped down to that bodysuit with “thick and juicy” on the butt — it was game over.

With a heavy heart, Roxxxy announced that the queen voted to get the chop was… Alexis Mateo. At least she sashayed away looking sickening, no?

Do you think the right queen went home this week? Cast your vote in the poll below, then drop a comment with your thoughts on the Top 4: Shea, Cracker, Jujubee and Blair.

The Ballet Girls Who Burned to Death https://briefnews.eu/the-ballet-girls-who-burned-to-death/ https://briefnews.eu/the-ballet-girls-who-burned-to-death/#respond Thu, 11 Oct 2018 11:35:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-ballet-girls-who-burned-to-death/ Le Papillon, in which a kidnapped princess is transformed into a butterfly, is sillier than your average ballet. It’s not even scientifically accurate — the climax involves a butterfly’s wings burning after it flies into a torch, even though, unlike moths, butterflies aren’t attracted to bright lights. In fact, the most significant thing about the production was that its star, Emma Livry, became famous for playing the flame-injured butterfly. And for dying when she drew too close to an open flame.

The young ballerina wasn’t the only one; scores of dancers are believed to have died after gas lighting became popular in 19th-century theaters. A gas light, a flimsy tutu and — bam! Ballerinas in Philadelphia, London and Paris perished in what was referred to as a holocaust. But Livry stands out, both as a defiant voice against change in the ballet world and as a catalyst for it.

She fluffed her skirts too close to a gas lamp and went up in flames. As Livry ran in circles around the set screaming, fellow cast members and the audience watched in horror.

Livry was 16 when she made her Paris Opéra debut in 1858. Plain but captivating, she swiftly became a huge star. Livry was a prodigy, to the extent that a notoriously territorial prima ballerina known as La Taglioni came to Paris to see the upstart for herself — and, stunned by her dancing, immediately took the teenager on as a protégée. Ballet was a deceptively dangerous profession. Not only were dancers at risk of death by fire, they were sometimes killed by overambitious stagecraft or crushed by falling sets. In 1859, imperial decree demanded that all sets and costumes be flameproofed as best they could via a process known as carteronizing: Tutus were immersed in a chemical bath before being worn onstage. But the process left the delicate skirts dingy, and the ballerinas — the very people at risk of public immolation — fought the safety measures. “I insist, sir, on dancing at all first performances of the ballet in my ordinary ballet skirt,” Livry wrote to the Paris Opéra’s director in 1860 in a formal declaration of independence — one that would result in her death just two years later.

Louis mérante emma livry

Today’s ballerinas are expected to starve and punish themselves for fear of being pushed off the assembly line, says Deirdre Kelly, dance critic and author of Ballerina: Sex, Scandal and Suffering Behind the Symbol of Perfection. But with Livry, “the directors said, ‘No, please, you’re our labor force, we want to preserve you,’ ” Kelly says, noting how Livry’s refusal to wear the chemically treated tutus, while tragic and unwise, showed a certain admirable willfulness. It was an example of a dancer setting her own priorities and seizing authority as an artist, Kelly believes, rather than as the embodiment of a choreographer’s vision.

Forty percent of Livry’s body had been burned, and her corset melted into her ribs.

Unfortunately, it ended badly for Livry. On Nov. 15, 1862, she fluffed her skirts too close to a gas lamp and went up in flames. As Livry ran in circles around the set screaming, fellow cast members and the audience watched in horror. Another dancer and a fireman tried to save her — the emperor later rewarded them for their bravery with cash — and managed to smother the flames by wrapping her in a blanket. But 40 percent of Livry’s body had been burned, and her corset melted into her ribs. She spent 36 hours wrapped in bandages in her dressing room, then another eight months recuperating, before dying of blood poisoning. Many dance scholars pinpoint Livry’s demise as the end of France’s dominant role in ballet. But her death also inspired safety measures: new designs for gas lamps, the invention of flame-retardant gauze and wet blankets hung in the wings just in case.

Though Livry is not remembered today, even by many in the dance world, her story, and those of other dancers like her, touch a nerve. When the skirt of French ballerina Janine Charrat caught on fire during a rehearsal and burned more than half of her body in 1961, she reportedly said, “Comme Emma Livry!” after the fire had been extinguished. Luckily for Charrat, she lived, and returned to ballet. But the idea of being consumed, literally, by your art has a romantic connection to ballet, an art that over the last 100 years has become deeply dedicated to what Kelly calls “the cult of thin” — the stripping down and distilling of a dancer’s physical presence to fulfill a romantic ideal.

Dancers in Livry’s day, for all the dangers, enjoyed more autonomy. While ballerinas in the 18th and 19th centuries endured plenty of hardship, “a 20th-century ballerina could envy them,” says Kelly, “because they were much more in control of their artistic destinies.”

I remember exactly where I was the first time I played Glory to Rome. It was the spring of 2011. I was on a Thalys high-speed train leaving Amsterdam, headed for Cologne, not far from where I was living at the time in Bonn, Germany. My friend Joe brought this new game straight from the US that he’d recently acquired—he was eager to teach it to me on the train ride.

Joe, who had a penchant for game nights, roped me into board games by teaching me the classic gateway game Catan. From there, I learned Puerto Rico, Power Grid, and many others. There was a period of time when our circle of friends gathered most Fridays over burritos and beer to play one game or another.

But GTR felt different. First, I noticed the packaging. Unlike the high-quality large-format cardboard boxes with soft colors and thoughtful art, GTR came in a compact, cheap, plastic tub that wasn’t much bigger than a large paperback book. Second, and more jarring, was the game’s art. It had a bright color palette and cartoonish characters that seemed like they belonged in a children’s clip art computer game. But hey, who was I to argue with Joe?

  • During the 1970s, the Viking probe went to Mars and found no evidence of any organic matter.
  • Yet NASA recently announced its Curiosity rover had discovered complex organic molecules on the surface of Mars.
  • It now seems Viking may have made the same discovery more than 40 years ago — then accidentally burned it up.

We’ve known since Curiosity’s expedition to Mars that the planet is home to complex organic molecules. Over the past few years, analysis provided by NASA’s most recent rover have enabled us to confirm this.

What’s special about the presence of these carbon-based compounds is that they’re considered a prerequisite for life — a promising sign for scientists.

Google Maps Street View is one way that Britons who can’t afford to travel can see the glove.

There are various strange and mysterious sights all over the globe, and this is one of them.

The Darvaza Gas Crater is also known as the “Door to Hell”, a rather frightening name.

The site in the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan is a popular tourist site, thanks to it’s one of a kind nature.

An enormous crater, the site has burned continuously for since 1971 – almost 50 years – leaving scientists puzzled.

It is 226 ft in diameter and 98 ft deep – a rather enormous natural gas fire, which many choose to camp near to (maybe for the heat it gives off 24 hours a day).

Full of fire, boiling mud and huge orange flames, one can understand how the site earned the name “Door to Hell”, giving to it by locals.

The area is a natural gas field, one of the largest in the world.

The Darvaza Gas Crater was created when the gas field collapsed into an underground cavern.

Soviet scientists were searching for oil in the area in 1971, and found the methane reserve, which caused the area to collapse, releasing the gas.

Worried about the effects of the dangerous gas, the scientists set the gas alight to make the area safe.

However, the gas and been burning for a very long time, even after scientists expected it to burn out after a few weeks.

Another quite frightening place to visit is Skid Row in Los Angeles, but for a very different reason.

Google Maps Street View reveals an insight into one of the most dangerous areas in the globe, known as Skid Row.

Many in the area live below the poverty line, at 41.8 per cent of the population.

Around 17,000 people live in the area, the name of which has become a generic term for a run down area, which the Cambridge Dictionary describes as: “A street or part of a town that is poor and dirty, where many people who have no jobs or homes spend time.”

Trump & Pence effigies burned in Palestinian mock execution (PHOTOS, VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/trump-pence-effigies-burned-in-palestinian-mock-execution-photos-video/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-pence-effigies-burned-in-palestinian-mock-execution-photos-video/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2018 20:38:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-pence-effigies-burned-in-palestinian-mock-execution-photos-video/

Palestinian protesters carried out a mock execution of US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, culminating in effigies of the pair being burned. The spectacle comes amid worsening US-Palestinian relations.

The staged hanging took place at Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem in the West Bank to show the community’s “rejection” of US budget cuts to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Before the execution, demonstrators held up a banner with photos of Trump, Pence and Netanyahu overlaid on a US flag – all marked with an X. Text on the banner read: “Zionism = Nazism = Fascism = USA = ISIS = Terror.”

The effigies were raised over wooden pallets flanked by the Palestinian flag. Children stood among the crowd holding banners reading: “Jerusalem is the title of war and peace [sic] and will remain Palestinian.”

A livestream of the mock execution was broadcast by independent Palestinian TV station, Wattan News Agency. A cardboard Trump was set alight first before eventually falling to the ground where demonstrators stamped on his face. A charred Pence cutout fell later.

Palestinians froze their ties with Washington last November after the US closed the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) office in the capital. Relations worsened in December after Trump formally recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, sparking violent protests on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Earlier this month the US State Department announced it was withholding a total of $ 100 million in payments to UNRWA, calling on other nations to contribute more. The US is the largest donor to the agency. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert denied the US was withholding $ 65 million to punish the Palestinians and said the funds may be made available in the future.

Trump reiterated his threat to withdraw aid entirely at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, warning the Palestinians must enter peace talks with Israel if they want US aid. UNRWA provides free schooling to half-a-million Palestinian children in Gaza and the occupied West Bank

Protests were also held on Saturday at other refugee camps on the West Bank and outside UN offices in Gaza calling for urgent action in response to the UNRWA cuts.

  • Bitcoin is in its worst weekly sell-off since 2013.
  • The plunge is dragging companies in the cryptocurrency space, including some that recently changed their core businesses.

Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies are tumbling on Friday along with the shares of several companies in the space.

Some of these companies recently announced they were changing their core businesses to focus on cryptocurrencies. Others added “blockchain” to their names and saw triple-digit-percent surges in their stock prices.

But some companies that have traditionally been associated with bitcoin, such as the GPU-maker AMD, are also weaker on Friday amid the heavy crypto selling.

Here’s how some of the companies are trading at 10:02 a.m. ET:

Bitcoin fell by as much as 25% below 11,000 per dollar on Friday, and was on track for its worst week of trading since 2013.

“What we’re seeing in Bitcoin in recent days is what many people have been anticipating for a while which is speculators getting burned by a sharp and aggressive correction,” said Craig Erlam, a senior market analyst at Oanda, in a note.

“The rally over the last couple of months has left bitcoin vulnerable to this kind of move and it seems the run up to Christmas has triggered some profit taking on the rally and even a shift into some alternative coins.”
