Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile will land in UK cinemas next month, coming hot on the tail of The Ted Bundy Tapes series on Netflix. The plot of the new film starring Zac Efron reads: “Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins) refused for years to acknowledge that her boyfriend was a serial killer. Her partner, Ted Bundy (Zac Efron), became famous in the 1980s for committing several heinous crimes against women, despite her disbelief, who watched passively as the murders were unleashed from a very unique perspective.” Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile has a respectable 64 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus reads: “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile often transcends its narrative limitations through sheer force of Zac Efron’s compulsively watchable performance.” Despite the middling score, many critics praised Efron’s performance. Brian Tallerico for RogerEbert.com: It’s particularly disappointing that Extremely Wicked doesn’t work considering that Zac Efron is giving it his all here. THE BEACH BUM REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT THE COMEDY? Sam Adams for Slate: Narratives help us sift the meaningful harbingers from the detritus of life. Extremely Wicked discards them entirely. Kate Erbland for indieWire: More sad than salacious, it’s the rare film about a criminal that offers human details without humanizing a man who so many agree was a monster. Johnny Oleksinski for the New York Post: Berlinger’s aim, it seems, is to cast doubt on whether or not Bundy actually murdered anybody until the very end of the movie to maintain suspense. Good luck, Joe! A.A. Dowd for the AV Club: Extremely Wicked can’t seem to commit to its ostensibly limited POV. AT ETERNITY’S GATE REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT VAN GOGH MOVIE? Emily Yoshida for New York Magazine/Vulture: If the narrative film only exists to give us the unsettling sliminess of Efron as Bundy, it won’t be a total waste. But it’s not much of a movie, either. Owen Gleiberman for Variety: How is Zac Efron as Bundy? I think he’s startlingly good: controlled, magnetic, audacious, committed, and eerily right. Carlos Aguilar for TheWrap: Less a play-by-play perusal of the killer’s methods and perversions, and more an examination of our biases and unending fascination for those among us that find twisted fulfilment in brutality. Kristy Strouse for Film Inquiry: Personally, the courtroom element incurs a stuffy countenance, but watching Efron infer Bundy’s unyielding charisma improves the setting. UNICORN STORE ON NETFLIX REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT BRIE LARSON DIRECTORIAL DEBUT Rafael Motamayor for IGN Movies: Despite Zac Efron’s performance, the film’s humorous take on a serial killer as a rock star doesn’t really work. Todd McCarthy for the Hollywood Reporter: Berlinger attacks the story in a rough-and-ready style only somewhat more refined than what he employs in documentaries, and the approach feels entirely appropriate. Benjamin Lee for the Guardian: In fact, the most shocking thing about the film is Efron’s remarkably accomplished, fiercely committed performance. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile is out in UK cinemas and on Sky on May 3, 2019. Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes on Netflix documents the case of American serial killer Ted Bundy. Bundy confessed to killing 30 women between 1974 and 1978 and potentially many more victims when he was on death row. Bundy tried to appeal his death sentence for the final time in 1989 but was he successful? Here’s everything you need to know about the fate of Ted Bundy. No, American serial killer Ted Bundy is not alive today. He was executed by the electric chair on January 24, 1989, at Florida State Prison. He died in the Raiford electric chair at 7.16am, aged 42. The Netflix documentary, Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes was released exactly 30 years on from his execution date. Ironically, Bundy was terrified of death and did everything he could to prolong and remove his execution date. He could have accepted a plea bargain put forward by his defence team which would have saved his life. Instead, Bundy acted out in court and fired his lawyers, refusing to accept a plea deal, sabotaging his own fate. On the days leading up to his original execution date, July 2, 1986, Bundy began confessing to his crimes to Special Agent William Hagmaier of the FBI Behaviour Analysis Unit. He detailed how he would return to the murder sites at Taylor Mountain, Issaquah and others and often engage in necrophilia. He also confessed that he decapitated the heads of 12 of his victims and kept some severed heads at his home before disposing of them. Stephen Michaud, who interviewed Bundy on death row in 1980, exclusively told Express.co.uk: “He hoped to trade confessions for a delay of execution. Ted did not want to die.” Bundy tried to appeal his execution from death row and the lawyers defending him claimed at the time of his trial for the Florida murders that he was not of a sound mind. As a result of a poor mental state and his irrational decision to represent himself at trial, it was hoped his death sentence would be overturned. Less than 15 hours before the July 2, 1986 execution date, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals issued an indefinite stay and remanded the Chi Omega case be reviewed. The execution date for the Kimberley Leach murder was set for November 18, 1986, which was then postponed indefinitely by the Eleventh Circuit Court on November 17. Despite the postponements, all appeal avenues had failed and the attempts to spare Bundy of the death penalty collapsed. In December 1988, the final execution of January 24, 1989, was set. Bundy then went onto confess to homicide detective Robert Keppel that he had committed the eight Washington and Oregon homicides and revealed he left a fifth corpse – Donna Manson’s on Taylor Mountain but incinerated her head in his girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer’s fireplace. In his book The Riverman: Ted Bundy and I Hunt for the Green River Killer, Keppel recalled how the murderer said: “Of all the things I did to [Kloepfer]. This is probably the one she is least likely to forgive me for. Poor Liz.” He also confessed to murderers in Idaho, Utah and Colorado but withheld details in the hope he would be granted another stay of execution, known as “Ted’s bones-for-time scheme” noted author David Von Drehle in his book, Among the Lowest of the Dead: The Culture on Death Row. On the night before his execution, he spoke to Hagmaier about taking his own life. In the documentary, Hagmaier reflects on the dark conversation and said: “He did not want to give the state the satisfaction of watching him die.” Bundy was executed by the electric chair as huge crowds and the media gathered outside the prison, waiting for his death to be announced. The documentary shows people cheering, carrying posters and wearing merchandise being sold, including pins of an electric chair and t-shirts that read ‘burn, Bundy, burn.’ The hearse containing his corpse left the prison soon afterwards and hundreds of people chased it down the road. His ashes were scattered at an undisclosed location in the Cascade Range of Washington State, in accordance with his will. It was mentioned in the documentary that the executioner, whose identity was concealed with a black hood, may have been female. What did critics say about Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile?
Is Ted Bundy still alive?

Ted Bundy wasn’t known for his glorious abs, but Zac Efron is going to give it a go playing the serial killer anyway. In Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, Efron plays the notorious murderer who may have killed more than 100 people. Efron took to Twitter to share a behind-the-scenes look of himself in character as Bundy. See Zac Efron as Ted Bundy below.
Zac Efron is ready to use his good looks for evil in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, a film that finds Efron playing infamous serial killer Ted Bundy. Between 1961 and 1978, Bundy murdered at least 36 women, but the real number might be even higher: somewhere in the hundreds. Efron hopped onto his Twitter to provide a behind-the-scenes image that offers our first look at him in-character as Bundy.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile will approach the Ted Bundy story from the point-of-view of his girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins. Kloepfer dated Bundy on again/off again for nearly seven years, and even kept dating him after she reported him to the police for suspicious behavior. She also kept in contact with Bundy after he was arrested, tried and sentenced to death. In 1981, she wrote a memoir about their relationship, The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy.
Efron as Bundy might seem like strange casting at first, but it ultimately makes sense. Bundy was able to disarm so many of his victims because he was a generally clean-cut, good-looking young man; not the type of person one automatically assumes to be a deranged serial killer. It’ll be interesting to see what tone the film goes for – this is a serious subject, and any sort of camp or snark could derail it. That said, the film is in good hands. Joe Berlinger, who helmed the Paradise Lost true crime documentary trilogy, is directing. This will mark Berlinger’s first return to the non-documentary filmmaking since 2000’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, a movie that’s actually a lot better than it gets credit for being, but nonetheless turned Berlinger off feature filmmaking for a while. The screenplay comes courtesy of newcomer Michael Werwie.
In addition to Efron and Collins, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile also stars John Malkovich as the judge that sentenced Bundy to death. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile isn’t the first Bundy film – there have been scores of others, including the 1986 TV movie The Deliberate Stranger, with Mark Harmon playing the serial killer; 2002’s absolutely terrible and highly fictionalized Bundy, with Michael Reilly Burke in the lead; and The Riverman, featuring Cary Elwes.
There’s no release date set yet for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile.

US District Court Judge Gloria Navarro ruled Monday that the government committed “flagrant prosecutorial misconduct” in the process against Bundy and his sons in relation to the 2014 armed standoff with federal agents over grazing rights.

Federal prosecutors willingly withheld evidence from defense attorneys, violating the Brady rule, Navarro said. She dismissed all charges against the Bundys and their co-defendant Ryan Payne “with prejudice,” meaning that the government will not be able to prosecute the case again.
“A universal sense of justice was violated,” Navarro said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
On December 21, Navarro declared a mistrial, finding the prosecutors in violation of the defendants’ due process rights. The government refused to turn over FBI memos and other documentation until after the October 1 deadline and repeated requests from the defense counsel, the judge said.

Bundy, 71, and his sons were charged with a total of 15 counts of criminal conspiracy and other violations following the confrontation with federal agents in April 2014. Agents with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) descended on Bundy’s ranch that month and began to round up his cattle, saying he had failed to pay grazing fees for 20 years. On April 12, hundreds of armed supporters arrived at Bundy’s ranch, leading to the standoff with federal authorities. Outnumbered government agents soon retreated from the property. No shots were fired.
The situation calmed down after Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie negotiated with Bundy and newly confirmed BLM Director Neil Kornze.
An 18-page memo written by BLM Special Agent Larry C Wooten, leaked last month, described nearly three years of misconduct by the agency in investigating the 2014 standoff, according to the Las Vegas-based KSNV.
“I routinely observed, and the investigation revealed a widespread pattern of bad judgment, lack of discipline, incredible bias, unprofessionalism and misconduct,” Wooten wrote to Associate Deputy Attorney General Andrew Goldsmith, “as well as likely policy, ethical, and legal violations among senior and supervisory staff at the BLM’s Office of Law Enforcement and Security.”
In January 2016, Bundy’s sons Ammon, 42, and Ryan, 44, led a group of armed activists in “occupying” a wildlife refuge in Oregon for 41 days, after federal authorities ordered two local ranchers to serve time in prison over a brushfire that damaged federal property. One of the occupiers was shot and killed by authorities. The Bundys were charged with a number of felonies, but were acquitted by a jury in October 2016.

The defendants were among hundreds who traveled to Bundy’s ranch to defend him against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which came to his ranch to seize nearly 1,000 head of cattle after he refused to pay around $ 1 million in grazing fees.
The jury began deliberating Thursday and is expected to reach a verdict on 10 charges for Gregory Burleson, O. Scott Drexler, Todd Engel, Ricky Lovelien, Eric Parker and Steven Stewart. They are the first six of 17 men to stand trial in the first of three cases related to the incident.
Their charges include conspiracy against the government, extortion, obstruction, using a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal agent.
The charges are the result of a standoff on April 12, 2014, where around 50 law-enforcement officers were allegedly met by more than 200 Bundy supporters, many armed with rifles and wearing body armor.
According to the charges, Bundy supporters formed a line with gunmen taking sniper positions on a bridge. Along with unarmed women and children, the Bundy supporters refused to leave until the cattle were returned.
Officers said that at one point there were “too many guns to count” and became concerned they could easily “spark a firefight that would kill or injure unarmed people.” After a tense standoff, during which Bundy supporters were “aiming their assault rifles directly at the officers below,” the special agent in charge was forced to give in to Bundy’s demands, return the cattle and leave the area, officers said.
During the eight-week trial, federal prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses, including county, state and federal law-enforcement officers, who testified they feared for their lives while facing Bundy’s supporters.
During closing arguments on Wednesday, Assistant US Attorney Nicholas Dickinson argued that the defendants were not a part of a legitimate protest, but a conspiracy and a crime.
“You can’t just go vigilante and resist law enforcement officers,” Dickinson said, according to the Las Vegas Sun. “You especially cannot do it with guns.“
“These six … use, carry, brandish and even point their weapons at federal law enforcement officers,” Dickinson said.
Defense attorneys argued that the men were exercising their constitutional rights to protest under the First Amendment and bear arms under the Second Amendment. They asked for the conspiracy and assault charges to be dropped since no one was hurt.
“This is a case of standing up for what you believe in,” said Richard Tanasi, the attorney representing Stewart, according to the Las Vegas Sun. “A protest is not a conspiracy.“
Jess Marchese, the attorney representing Eric Parker, told the jury that his defendant traveled to help people he never met, because he was upset about reports that the Bundy family members had been arrested and injured during previous confrontations with police.
“Some people protest with signs. Other people protest with guns,” Marchese said, according to the Associated Press. “At the end of the day, no one was hurt, and that’s the important thing.“
Shawn Perez, the attorney representing Richard Lovelien, claimed that his defendant was innocent since no one was hurt.
“The jury knows right now that Lovelien didn’t point a gun at anybody,” Perez said, according to Arizona Central. “I’m fairly confident without arguments that they can’t find him guilty of threatening or assault.“

With no court scheduled Friday, the verdicts are not expected until next week. A second federal trial could start June 5, where Bundy and his two sons, Ammon and Ryan, are accused as the leaders of the conspiracy. A third trial for the remaining six defendants is scheduled for the fall.
