Microsoft has posted the results of the fourth quarter of its 2018 financial year, running up until June 30, 2018. Revenue was $ 30.1 billion (up 17 percent year-on-year), operating income was $ 10.4 billion (up 35 percent), net income was $ 8.8 billion (a rise of 10 percent), and earnings per share were $ 1.14 (an increase of 11 percent).

This brings the full-year revenue to $ 110.4 billion (up 14 percent on the 2017 financial year), with operating income of $ 35.1 billion (up 21 percent) and net income of $ 16.6 billion, a drop of 35 percent, attributed to the impact of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act’s $ 13.8 billion repatriation tax. Without that, the company would have been looking at a net income of $ 30.3 billion, up 18 percent on 2017.

Microsoft currently has three reporting segments: Productivity and Business Processes (covering Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Skype, and Dynamics), Intelligent Cloud (including Azure, Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Enterprise Services), and More Personal Computing (covering Windows, hardware, and Xbox, as well as search and advertising). This reporting structure has been retained even though the Windows division has been reorganized with responsibilities split between different groups.

AFTER a bumper year for financial markets in 2017, can 2018 be anything like as good? Much will depend on the global economy. The rally in stockmarkets stretches back almost two years, to the point when worries about an era of “secular stagnation” started to diminish.

The first pieces of economic data to be published in January—the purchasing managers’ indices (PMI) for the manufacturing sector—were pretty upbeat. In the euro zone the index recorded its highest level since the survey began in 1997. China’s PMI was stronger than expected, and America’s index showed new orders at their highest level in nearly 14 years.

The obvious question is whether the markets have anticipated the good news about growth, and pushed share prices to a level from which returns can only be disappointing. The cyclically adjusted price-earnings ratio of the American market, which uses a ten-year average of profits, is 32.4; it has been higher only in September 1929 (just before the Wall Street crash) and…

Holiday camp Butlins is facing a legal action for barring a Muslim teenager from driving one of the fairground’s dodgem bumper cars, because she was wearing a hijab. Her father is suing over alleged discrimination on the grounds of race and religion.

Moammer Nasser, 41, a family support worker from Birmingham, said he was at the holiday resort in Minehead in June with his wife and four children, and had been waiting to use the bumper cars with his 16-year-old daughter when an attendant, citing health and safety concerns, said the girl couldn’t go on the ride because she was wearing a hijab.

Nasser asked to see a policy banning hijabs at Butlins. “I was shown a safety code which stated that some disabled guests or those with physical injuries may not be able to use rides safely. But wearing a hijab is not a disability or a physical injury,” Nasser told the Guardian.

“We were humiliated in front of other fairground users. My daughter was crying at the gate of the ride, making her feel very stressed and upset.” He added that people were looking at them as if they were criminals.

“[We were] stopped and questioned by the ride attendant, followed by a supervisor and the fairground manager coming out to speak to us whilst people stared and looked at my family, probably assuming that we had done something wrong.”

Nasser said he and his family were so distressed by the incident that they finished their holiday a day early. He lodged a formal complaint with Butlins. Jan Axten, of Bourne Leisure Ltd, replied that it was company policy that no one could go on the ride wearing a headscarf or loose garment that could not be removed.

This, Axtern said, was due to a “previous very serious incident” in 2016 when a scarf around a visitor’s neck had come loose, got caught in the chassis and caused a serious neck and throat injury. She said Butlins was disappointed that Nasser felt his daughter had been deliberately treated unfavorably because of her hijab, and offered “sincere apologies.”

But Nasser said others were wearing various forms of scarves and headgear and had not been banned from using the dodgems. “During our stay at the resort there was another lady who was wearing a scarf around her neck and was allowed on the rides; many people were wearing hoods and the tie strings were hanging … yet they were still allowed on the rides,” Nasser said.

A Butlin’s spokesperson said its team is trained not to compromise when it comes to safety. “In this instance our team member quite rightly put the guest’s welfare first and judged that loose headwear could have caused a risk if caught in moving bumper cars.”

The spokesperson added: “There was no question of discrimination and any suggestions of this are utterly rejected in the strongest terms. We are sorry if the family feel they were badly treated. We explained our policies to them at the time, in writing afterwards and also to the Equality Advice and Support Service, who have told us they are satisfied with the explanation given to them.”

Ozil is out of contract in the summer and can talk to other clubs from January.

Barcelona are exploring the possibility of signing him as soon as January and have reportedly already spoken to his representatives.

And AS claim he will demand a significant signing on fee because he knows he will only cost a small transfer fee with his contract ticking down.

Ozil is an attractive option for Barca due to the fee – which could be around £17m – and the fact he can play in the Champions League knockout rounds.

Philippe Coutinho remains Barcelona’s No 1 target but he would be ineligible in Europe and would cost over £100m.

So a move for Ozil has been mooted as the plan B with his time in north London looking like coming to an end.

Ozil has so far refused to sign an extension at the Emirates and wants a deal worth £8m NET a season, with a big bonus, according to the Spanish publication.

Barcelona have started the season well and may be ok with what they’ve got domestically but they believe they need additions to help them challenge in the Champions League.

Ernesto Valverde’s side top La Liga by four points after 12 game and already lead Real Madrid by 10 points.

They have have 10 points from four Champions League games and need one point to secure a place in the last 16 from the last two games.

IGF award-winners will be honored live on stage at the IGF Awards ceremony during the 2018 Game Developers Conference in March, and showcased in the IGF Pavilion on the GDC Expo Floor from March 21st-23rd.

GDC 2018 itself will be taking place that entire week (March 19th-23rd) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and the IGF-related Independent Games Summit will take place March 19th and 20th.

The festival’s organizers have also provided an official JSON feed, which is updated regularly from live backend data. Teams can update their games entries, and interested IGF followers are welcome to use this feed to make their own custom IGF entry lists and pages.

France has been a target for terrorists with the country suffering a number incidents since 2015.

The country’s capital city, Paris, united in the face of terrorism after an attack in November 2015 killed 130 people. And newly-released tourist numbers have revealed the rest of the world is uniting against the horror too. 

Despite the rumours of tourists avoiding the city, it’s reported the capital has welcomed a record number of tourists in the first six months of 2017.

It is great news for France which relies on tourism, generating seven per cent of the country’s national income.

The number released by the Regional Tourism Authority (CRT) recorded 16.4 million arrivals from January to June.

This is the highest number of visitors within the first half of a year since 2008, which implies a strong recovery in spite of the recent attacks.

Taking into account the popular summer months of July and August, the city could welcome up to 34 million tourists this year, up by four million from last year.

Frederic Valletoux, president of the Paris region tourist board, stated in a news conference: “(This) could be a record year but let’s not get carried away.

“Will Barcelona have an impact on other destinations like Paris? It’s hard to say. It’s Europe. 

“It took three years for New York to bounce back after the Sept 11 attacks, for Madrid it was a year and for Paris also a year.

“The international situation remains turbulent and terrorism a daily threat.”

The city of Paris initially struggled after the terrorist attacks last year.

Disneyland Paris, one of the most popular attractions, suffered record losses due to the attacks.

The group turnover plummeted 6.91 per cent last year, with Euro Disney president Catherine Powell commenting: ”Disneyland Paris had an exceptionally challenging year. 

“We have been impacted by various external factors that have significantly affected the tourism business in the Paris region.”

The resort is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this year.

The England midfielder is on Barca’s wanted list to replace Neymar who is on the verge of a world record £200m switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

The PFA Young Player of the Year scored 23 goals last season to help Spurs finish runners up behind Premier League champions Chelsea.

It would be his third new contract since joining the club in January 2015 and only put pen to paper on his last deal in September.

But even though he still has five years to run on it a recent spate of players signing new deals have left him behind in the wage stakes on around £55,000 a week.

The new deal could net him as much as £80,000 a week will more or less put him on a par with the top earners like Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris.

Barca are the latest club to take a look at signing Alli who cost Spurs a bargain £5m from MK Dons and who would now cost at least £100m.

Barca are currently fighting to keep Neymar at the club amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Nou Camp president Josep Bartomeu said on Saturday that midfield is a key position they want to strengthen.

“There will be more players (coming in), one in the middle, that’s for sure,” Bartomeu said.

Real Madrid and Manchester City have also expressed an interest in Alli but Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino have insisted he is going nowhere.
