What’s the opposite of Sweet Christmas?

Exactly one week after Iron Fist was canceled at Netflix, the streaming service has just axed another member of The Defenders from getting another season. Luke Cage has been canceled and will no longer be getting a third season order, which came as a surprise to showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and his writers room. Get the details below.

Deadline has word on Luke Cage canceled with a statement from Marvel and Netflix:

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

When Iron First was canceled, everyone working on Luke Cage was still expecting a third season renewal. In fact, when Iron Fist was canceled, it was hinted that the character would still return, leading many to believe the a team-up of the two characters in a Heroes for Hire story arc would finally play out. But now both of the heroes are out of a job. So what happened with Luke Cage?

Some of the scripts for the next season of Luke Cage had already been turned in to Netflix, and apparently the streaming service wasn’t impressed with what they had been given so far. The result was the old standby of creative differences and neither Netflix nor the Luke Cage crew could come to a compromise to strikes a deal that would have locked down a third season.

In the wake of the disagreement behind the scenes, the writers room was put on hold and some “turmoil ensued this week.” That’s where the creative differences came into play with regards to where the show was heading, and there was even talk of some personnel changes. All those difficulties led to Netflix deciding just to cancel the series altogether.

So what does this mean for the future of Iron Fist and Luke Cage? They may not have a home at Netflix anymore, but let’s not forget that Disney has their own streaming service coming in 2019, and both shows could easily end up continuing over there. If they don’t both return with their own shows, they could easily come back in a Heroes for Hire series, or one could come back in the other’s series (likely Iron Fist popping up in Luke Cage).

As for Jessica Jones, Daredevil and The Punisher, it doesn’t sound like those shows are on the verge of cancellation. But we thought the same thing about Luke Cage, so who knows what Netflix is thinking at this point. Stay tuned.

It says the product is in high demand in the US, inspired by the school shootings “trauma” there.

“We designed a bullet-proof backpack at the request of our distributors in the United States after the huge trauma caused by the February shooting in Florida,” Snir Koren, CEO of Masada Armor, told AFP.

The February 14 shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland has become one of the deadliest incidents of the kind in US history with 17 people killed and some 20 injured.

The company’s new product has apparently been received well, as Masada Armor sold “hundreds” of the backpacks in just two months. Now the backpack is available for purchase online and the company seeks to increase production to 500 units per months, according to the CEO.

The backpack can quickly transform into an actual bulletproof vest, as a promotional video shows. The front piece of the vest is stored within the backpack, and takes about a second to pull out – at least by an adult in the video demonstration. It’s unclear if a school student under stress would find it as easy to accomplish.

The basic model of the backpack costs some $ 500, weights three kilograms (six pounds) and protects against 9mm pistol rounds. The heavier version, weighing five kilograms (11 pounds) sells for more than $ 700 and offers protection “against high velocity rifles such as the AR-15 and the M-16 and Kalashnikov assault rifles,” according to the manufacturer.

However, the actual class of the armor is listed as NIJ 0101.06 IIIA, which only covers protection from large .357 and .44 Magnum handgun rounds, at most. Higher protection levels, from actual rifle and armor-piercing rounds, can be achieved by adding ballistic plates to the vest, as the manufacturer admits.

The backpack is currently only suitable for high-school and college students, since it’s too bulky and too heavy for younger children. A child-friendly version is “coming soon,” the Masada Armor website states.

Bulletproof items for American students have apparently become a trend of back-to-school fashion. Back in June, the eighth-graders at a Pennsylvania middle school were given bulletproof shields – a gift to get them ready to high school from the local company Unequal Technologies. Protective gear manufacturer MC Armor has produced a backpack with an armor plate insert.

Masada Armor’s take on the bulletproof backpack is definitely a blow to the competitors, since it features a full-fledged armor vest instead of mere ballistic inserts. As yet another step to the militarization of US schools, such a contraption would certainly make Sacha Baron Cohen’s Erran Morad proud.

Mustafa Shakir (The Deuce, Quarry) also appears in the trailer as John McIver aka “Bushmaster,” a baddie who is equally if not more powered than Harlem’s friendly neighborhood superhero. As such, he is intent on dethroning Mariah and destroying Luke (Mike Colter) so he can take over Harlem for himself.

  • Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt’s security detail and travel arrangements cost around $ 3 million, according to sources cited by the Associated Press on Friday.
  • Unlike the former EPA chief, Pruitt’s security team has provided around-the-clock protection, even during family trips and sporting events.
  • Pruitt was granted several security upgrades, including a soundproof phone booth at his office, biometric locks for his doors, and a contractor to sweep for hidden listening devices.

The Environmental Protection Agency reportedly incurred $ 3 million in taxpayer-funded expenses for administrator Scott Pruitt’s security detail and travel arrangements, according to news reports published on Friday.

Pruitt’s security detail reportedly comprised of 20 full-time members — three times the size of former EPA administrator Gina McCarthy’s part-time security staff.

International Armoring, the company that helped build Rezvani’s tanklike armored SUV, has now put its protective touch on a Tesla Model S. Without changing the appearance of the sleek electric vehicle, the company’s Armormax lightweight armoring division has modified the Tesla to shield it from both ballistic and bioweapon attacks. So, while Elon Musk’s reputation continues to take hits during his struggles to produce the Model 3, anybody inside this armored Model S is safe from the haters.

–

–

As the Model S has grown in popularity, we’ve seen a variety of alterations to the family four-door. Aftermarket customizers have built Model S shooting brakes, coupes, and convertibles, so this armored Tesla should come as no major surprise, given the car’s popularity among wealthy, high-profile individuals.

–

International Armoring’s modifications endeavor to protect both the vehicle’s key mechanicals and the car’s occupants. The cabin, including the doors, roof, floor, and pillars, is reinforced with light synthetic-fiber laminates and heat-treated ballistic metals. All glass is replaced with a combination of layered glass and acrylic and polycarbonate laminates, which maintain an unobstructed view. The battery packs are armored, the suspension is reinforced, the tires are run-flats, and a siren and intercom system is integrated into the car. It works well alongside Tesla’s own Bioweapon Defense Mode air-filtration system in case of airborne chemical attacks.

–

–

Possibly the most impressive aspect of this build is the weight. International Armoring says the special armor and glass add only 550 pounds to the car, in part because the company avoided the use of steel. The extra weight will certainly hurt the performance and range of the vehicle, but that total mass is really not bad for a full-size armored sedan.

–

–

The package provides B4, B5, and B6 levels of ballistic protection, but not the top (“armor piercing”) B7 level. This includes defense against a variety of high-powered rifles, handguns, and shotguns. The exact Model S modded for this project was a 2018 P100D, but the company claims it can armor “a variety of trims with various features and battery sizes.” Pricing for the custom project is not listed, but for certain customers, like the businessman from the Middle East who commissioned this car, cost is probably not a major consideration.

Stocks are looking bulletproof https://briefnews.eu/stocks-are-looking-bulletproof/ https://briefnews.eu/stocks-are-looking-bulletproof/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 10:56:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stocks-are-looking-bulletproof/ Superman Warner BrosWarner Bros.

The US stock market simply will not be defeated.

Just two sessions after the S&P 500 tumbled 1.5%, its biggest decline since May, the benchmark ended Monday back within half a percent of its level prior to the North Korea-fueled selloff.

But why? There’s not anything particularly bullish happening in the earnings world, and there’s been no major economic data released.

One explanation is that traders have simply pushed aside their worry over possible military action between the US and North Korea, and are using last week’s weakness as an attractive entry point for more stock buying.

If that reasoning sounds familiar, that’s because it’s happened time and again throughout the eight-year equity bull market, which is now well into its tenure as the second-longest on record.

Stock traders seem fully aware that brief selloffs in the last several years have simply been head fakes, and are treating them as nothing to worry about. In fact, their willingness to recognize and apply that logic may even be helping fuel the trend further.

Screen Shot 2017 08 14 at 4.25.54 PMMarkets Insider

“Last week’s action was more investors taking advantage of news that justified some profit taking, rotation and rebalancing rather than a market rout or harbinger of worse things to come,” John Stoltzfus, the chief investment strategist at Oppenheimer, wrote in a client note. “While markets may be rattled by spikes in tensions between nations and even war, the unsettling periods for the bourses around these occurrences tend to be short in duration and with fleeting effect.”

For evidence of how quick US equity investors are to buy the dip, look no further than the S&P 500’s 1.8% single-day decline in May. The index recovered 85% of that loss over the following three days, the second-fastest retracement of a loss that big in S&P 500 history, according to data compiled by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Going further back in time, after the S&P 500 fell by 5.3% over two trading sessions following the UK’s vote last June to leave the European Union, the benchmark recovered those losses in about a week.

The same dynamic was in play when China unexpectedly devalued its currency in August 2015. After the S&P 500 underwent an 11% correction, traders bought the dip and restored the benchmark to its pre-sell-off levels within about two months.

Torrid earnings growth for S&P 500 corporations is at the root of stock investor confidence right now. Companies in the benchmark index are on pace to expand profits by 10.7% in the second quarter, which would mark its fourth straight period of expansion, according to survey data compiled by Bloomberg. The S&P 500 is expected to grow earnings by 11.2% in 2017, its best full-year performance since 2010, the survey shows.

So what will finally serve as the tipping point for US equities? No one knows at this point, but keep a close eye on the CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, which serves as a measure of stock market fear. The gauge — which trades opposite the S&P 500 roughly 80% of the time — spiked 44% on Thursday, but has since pared that gain.

While that price action in the VIX isn’t particularly worrisome to Allianz chief economic advisor Mohamed El-Erian, he’s not ruling out more price swings if the ongoing geopolitical griping escalates further.

“The market’s buy-on-dips conditioning is strong,” El-Erian told Business Insider. “As such, it would take a worsening of the North Korean tensions to amplify the pressures on the VIX.”

The New York state Senate has secured $ 4 million in this year’s budget to retrofit the New York Police Department’s vehicles with bullet-resistant glass and armor. It comes after the fatal shooting of a police officer last week.

All 72 NYPD command vehicles, as well as 3,800 patrol cars, will be made bulletproof, according to the office of Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The ambush shooting of NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, who was sitting in one of the RV-like mobile command centers, has added to the urgency of protecting the vehicles.

Her killer walked up and blasted a single round from a .38-caliber revolver through an ordinary window.

The NYPD had initially planned to retrofit only patrol cars with ballistic panels and bullet-resistant glass, but after the killing of Familia ‒ a single mother of three ‒ the department decided to safeguard the mobile command centers as well.

“It’s definitely going to help save lives, protect lives,” said state Senator Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn), an ex-cop who pushed for the funding.
“We could have saved Officer Familia’s life if we had bulletproof protection,” he added.

The funding would come from the State and Municipal Assistance capital program and should be available immediately.

“We’re in the process of retrofitting all of our police cars. We started [with] the vehicles that are on patrol right now,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said last Thursday.

How the CEO of Bulletproof Coffee turned buttered coffee into a multimillion-dollar empire https://briefnews.eu/how-the-ceo-of-bulletproof-coffee-turned-buttered-coffee-into-a-multimillion-dollar-empire/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-ceo-of-bulletproof-coffee-turned-buttered-coffee-into-a-multimillion-dollar-empire/#respond Sun, 16 Apr 2017 21:17:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-ceo-of-bulletproof-coffee-turned-buttered-coffee-into-a-multimillion-dollar-empire/ bulletproof coffee dave aspreyTwitter/bulletproofexec and Melia Robinson/Business Insider

While on a remote mountainside in Tibet, Dave Asprey started to feel “really, really crappy.”

In the mid-2000s, the cloud computing executive-turned-biohacking guru trekked to Mount Kailash, considered one of the most sacred places on Earth, because he wanted to learn to meditate from the Buddhist pilgrims who take ritual walks around the base. Temperatures dipped 10 degrees below, freezing his CamelBak. The altitude left him in a brain fog.

Later Asprey stumbled into a one-bedroom mud hut, where a Tibetan woman gave him a cup of tea blended with yak butter. After five minutes, a warmth spread over his body. “I felt a mental clarity come on,” Asprey says. “Everything just felt easier.”

More than 10 years later, that magical cup of tea is part of the lore that surrounds Asprey. He’s built a multimillion-dollar empire around his DIY approach to biology, complete with two bestselling books, conferences, and an executive retreat center where entrepreneurs pay $ 15,000 for access to technologies that Asprey says will give them a shortcut to success.

Still, coffee is his biggest claim to fame. In 2010, Asprey posted a recipe online for the original Bulletproof Coffee — a version of the Tibetan woman’s tea that blends grass-fed butter, a proprietary “Brain Octane” oil, and specialty coffee. He claims its revolutionary combination gives drinkers a “mental edge,” satiates hunger for hours, and promotes weight loss.

Last year, Bulletproof sold 48 million cups of coffee, according to Asprey. However, the science behind the brew remains spotty, and it has drawn public skepticism from doctors.

When he was first starting out with Bulletproof, Asprey mixed and matched butters with hundreds of varieties of tea and coffee. “I’d drink it and think, ‘Did it wake me up? Did it smack me upside the head?'” Asprey says. For seven years, he experimented.

He landed on three core ingredients that made him feel good again.

Organic, grass-fed butter is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats can turn the body into a fat-burning machine under the right conditions. A limited body of research suggests that a low-carb, high-fat diet may also dull hunger, promote weight loss, and stave off diseases associated with aging. However, there’s no scientific evidence that a dab of butter in your morning coffee achieves the same affect as a diet made up of 80% saturated fats.

Bulletproof Coffee uses single-origin coffee beans from farms in Guatemala and Colombia. They’re processed using a proprietary method that minimizes mold, though as Gizmodo’s Brent Rose points out in a debunking of Bulletproof’s claims, there’s no evidence that Asprey’s homebrew has fewer toxins or provides better performance than traditional coffee.

The last ingredient in Asprey’s golden recipe is the creatively titled Brain Octaine oil, which is derived from coconut oil and converted in the body into fuel for the brain.

Bulletproof doesn’t sell a bottled coffee — though Asprey tells Business Insider it’s in the pipeline — and for now offers each of the three ingredients online and in Whole Foods, CrossFit locations, and supplement retailers. Purchased together, the ingredients cost $ 65. (A bigger, 32-ounce bottle of Brain Octane is almost double the cost of a similar oil on Amazon.)

bulletproof coffeeFacebook/Bulletproof

Asprey can’t remember when, between the time he posted the Bulletproof Coffee recipe on his blog in 2010 and later when actress Shailene Woodley and Jimmy Fallon gushed about the brew on “The Tonight Show,” his at-home experiment turned full-blown cultural phenomenon. It gathered a cult following slowly, as the recipe spread from one biohacker to another in online forums, while Asprey traveled the world sharing the Bulletproof gospel.

These days, Asprey, who’s currently promoting his book, “Head Strong,” still drinks Bulletproof Coffee everyday. He says drinking it for breakfast outweighs poor decisions he makes later.

“Even if you’re going to have Taco Bell for lunch, [by drinking Bulletproof] you seriously improve the quality of your life all morning long,” Asprey says.
