The official death toll has now jumped to 21.

The figure keeps growing as rescue teams attempt to clear all the rubble left by the collapsed structure in the city of Magnitogorsk. Overall, 21 people have been confirmed dead, the Emergencies Ministry said on Wednesday. A three-year-old girl is among the victims, while 20 residents remain missing.

The explosion occurred around 6:00am local time on Monday. It partially destroyed the multi-apartment building, completely collapsing one of its sections. Authorities suspect that a gas leak was the cause of the blast.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, locals began bringing flowers and toys to makeshift memorials set up near the site, and lighting candles there. Different stories also began emerging. One resident, Yevgeny Yurchenko, said he woke up earlier than usual and left just 15 minutes before the explosion, likely escaping death.

“I left the house and went straight to my garage. Then the blast happened,” Yevgeny told local media. He didn’t immediately realize what had happened but quickly noticed how grayish dust began filling the area.

“I came up and looked at my apartment – it was on the 10th floor – and it was simply gone. And I understood that if I hadn’t left, I would be gone too.”

Multiple rescue teams have been working day and night to locate and extract people trapped in the debris. Heat cannons were set up to help those who might still be stuck under the debris to withstand the cold, as the temperature fell to -20C at night.

The use of heavy equipment was halted due to fears of further collapse. Rescuers are currently clearing the rubble manually, but additional equipment was also deployed to the scene, ready to be used if required.

Six people have been rescued so far, including an 11-month-old boy, Vanya, who was miraculously recovered from the rubble alive.

Vanya’s condition is stable for now but remains very serious, Leonid Roshal, who heads the hospital treating the boy, told Gazeta.ru. He sustained multiple injuries and is struggling with hypothermia.

At least three people have been killed and four others injured, while the fate of 79 remains unknown after a gas explosion shattered a 10-story residential building in downtown Magnitogorsk in Russia’s Urals.

The blast rocked the apartment complex on Monday at around 6am local time, completely collapsing one of its sections, videos from the scene show.

The disaster left at least three people dead, according to local officials. Another four, including a child, were rescued from the rubble and hospitalized with injuries.

Some 110 residents were registered as living in the apartment complex, and the fate of 79 remains unclear, Deputy Governor Oleg Klimov told reporters. In total, 48 apartments were damaged.

The tragedy was caused by a gas explosion, the regional office of the Federal Security Service (FSB) confirmed.

A woman living on the fourth floor of the building said that she was woken up by a loud bang and saw that all the windows in the apartment were shattered. She immediately detected a strong smell of burning.

“I made a wet cloth mask for my kids, quickly dressed them in warm clothes and grabbed some of my documents,” she said.

“We went out right onto the rubble. The whole section of the building was gone.”

Some 469 rescuers and 66 pieces of equipment were deployed to the scene. Additional teams, including psychiatric specialists and K-9 units, are being brought from all over Chelyabinsk Region and neighboring Bashkortostan Region.

While the city has deployed its first-response teams, the Emergencies Ministry remains on a standby to fly four planes from Moscow to deliver more staff to the scene.

President Vladimir Putin has directed the emergencies minister to personally fly to Magnitogorsk and lead the rescue efforts. He also urged the minister of healthcare to undertake all the necessary measures to assist the victims.

  • Elon Musk said SpaceX is building a “test hopper” vehicle in Texas that could launch by March or April.
  • The vehicle is a squat version of a full-scale Starship spaceship — one that’s being designed to reach Mars as part of the Big Falcon Rocket system.
  • Photos taken by locals in Boca Chica, Texas (where SpaceX is building a launch site) show what appears to be the outline of a spaceship coming together.

Elon Musk logged on to Twitter this weekend to deliver a veritable sleigh full of gifts to fans of his rocket company, SpaceX, in time for Christmas.

Musk was waiting for SpaceX’s 21st (and record-breaking) rocket launch of the year on Saturday when he revealed that construction of a prototype for a Mars spaceship, called Starship, is now underway at the company’s Texas launch site.

Building a Chinese-Food Empire https://briefnews.eu/building-a-chinese-food-empire/ https://briefnews.eu/building-a-chinese-food-empire/#respond Sun, 23 Dec 2018 07:34:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/building-a-chinese-food-empire/ Andrew Cherng started working in the United States at 18, while he pursued an undergraduate degree in mathematics at Baker University, in Kansas. Starting in 1967, he began spending his summers in New York City, working in a restaurant where his father had connections. It was his first real job. The work was fast-paced, his English wasn’t perfect, and New Yorkers were ruthless, he says.

After Cherng had been working in the restaurant for six summers, his cousin, who also lived in New York, decided to open a restaurant in Washington, D.C. The new business needed a manager, and Cherng seemed an obvious choice. In 1972, his cousin moved the restaurant to Hollywood, and Cherng followed. Several months later, Cherng’s parents moved to the United States.

In 1973, Cherng and his father found a place to start their own restaurant: Pasadena, California. After six months of remodeling, Panda Inn, which would inspire Panda Express, was created. Cherng ran the dining room while his father ran the back. Cherng’s father died in 1981, before he could see the restaurant chain take off.

Panda Express now has 2,000 restaurants globally and more than 35,000 workers. I recently spoke with Cherng about his first jobs in the United States, how they differed from his father’s experience working in restaurants in China, and how he created Panda Express’s company culture.

Lola Fadulu: What was your first job?

Andrew Cherng: I grew up in Asia. Just before coming to the United States, we actually moved to Japan from China. I was a high-school student for the most part. My father got me a job in the kitchen in a restaurant somewhere in Chinatown in Yokohama, Japan.

Then I came here, to the U.S. One of my first jobs was working in a school cafeteria as a dish washer. We had this industrial bacterial dish-washing machine. So there would be people working, and the plates, the silverware, would go onto this moving assembly-line-like thing. They’d go through a very hot wash. I had the job of picking up the hot plates at the end of it. And it was really, really hot. By the end of it, my hands got pretty tough.

Fadulu: How was working in a school cafeteria for you?

Cherng: It was okay. I mean, you know, it was a job. You’d have to be pretty quick because if the plate does not get picked up, the line stops. When I was in college, I also worked in the library. I did some filing and organized some shelves in the library and stuff like that. One of the more relevant jobs that I’ve done is that from the first summer, which is 1967. I actually went to New York and, for the first time, learned how to work in a restaurant. That was really an eye-opener, because that’s when I found out how difficult it is to adjust to working in a restaurant.

Working as a waiter—that wasn’t easy. I remember I took a job in Clifton somewhere. The restaurant was pretty big, and there were a couple people working, a couple waiters working. One minute, the restaurant was pretty slow, and within 15, 20 minutes, my section was totally full, and that’s probably 10 tables. I was like, “Are you kidding me? I don’t know how to do this.” And I don’t even know how I got through it. I worked in New York all through my college years, including graduate school. Just about every vacation, I would either fly up, or I would drive up from the Midwest—from Kansas when I was in college, and Missouri when I was in graduate school. So I worked five or six summers, plus Thanksgiving, Christmas holidays, New Year’s, and those times.

Fadulu: Why New York, specifically?

Cherng: My father knew some friends working in New York, and that’s where I knew some people who could help me. He got me in touch with the people who helped me, so that’s where I went. My father was a chef.

My dad actually started to work in restaurants at a very young age, in China. My dad grew up in the countryside, and he never went to school.

[Read: Westworld star Jeffrey Wright on the lessons he learned from sports and summer jobs]

Fadulu: How did working in restaurants in New York inform how you went about creating Panda Express?

Cherng: We always think about getting our people to adopt to this idea of I can do more than just working, I can learn to take responsibilities, I can thrive, and I can also help other people to do the same. We like people who work hard and didn’t think they could be a manager; when we suggest it to them, we have to push them a little bit. We like that because taking responsibility is something they can learn. Restaurant people, by nature, don’t mind working hard, because it is a seven-day week. You work harder on holidays—that’s expected. If you’re looking for an easy job, you wouldn’t work in the restaurant. We need to figure out how they should grow personally.

One of our values is continuous learning, whether you go back and get a degree or whatever learning they think will help them advance themselves.

‘Bird Box’ Screenwriter Eric Heisserer on Building a Mysterious Post-Apocalypse and Working With Netflix [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/bird-box-screenwriter-eric-heisserer-on-building-a-mysterious-post-apocalypse-and-working-with-netflix-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/bird-box-screenwriter-eric-heisserer-on-building-a-mysterious-post-apocalypse-and-working-with-netflix-interview/#respond Fri, 21 Dec 2018 17:28:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bird-box-screenwriter-eric-heisserer-on-building-a-mysterious-post-apocalypse-and-working-with-netflix-interview/ bird box early buzz

Bird Box is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the exact cause of the apocalypse is never shown. Something out there causes people to kill themselves when they look at it, and much of the world commits suicide in the first days. Malorie (Sandra Bullock) ends up in a stranger’s house where a group of survivors covers the windows, and the audience never sees the monstrous forces in Bird Box.

Screenwriter Eric Heisserer adapted Bird Box from the novel by Josh Malerman. He previously adapted Arrival from Ted Chiang’s story The Story Of Your Life (and received an Oscar nomination), and made his directorial debut with his original script Hours, starring Paul Walker.

Heisserer spoke with /Film about adapting Bird Box, some of his upcoming screenplays, and his memories of Walker. Bird Box is available to stream on Netflix right now.

Hours is very well represented in the documentary I Am Paul Walker.

Fantastic. I was unavailable during the production side of that thing but I gave them as many resources as I could.

Oh, I wasn’t questioning why you weren’t interviewed but I was glad they acknowledged what a turning point that would have been for him.

At the press event for that, he told me about all the amazing job offers that he’d gotten based on people that had seen the screening. He was like, “I’m finally in the direction I want to go.”

So Bird Box falls into my favorite genre of post-apocalyptic survival. Is it one of yours too?

Absolutely. The novel certainly is. I was just trying to do it justice.

Each of these are unique because whatever the apocalypse is, people have to adapt to the new world. Are there infinite possibilities depending on the cause of each apocalypse?

Certainly that could be explored. What I liked about the novel and what I tried to represent in the adaptation was that the biggest hurdle for us, the cause of the apocalypse is really our need to know. Our innate curiosity as humans, our struggle to understand why or who or what, that is of course our demise in this. The moment we surrender to decide to see what it is, then we failed.

Was a lot of the coping mechanisms – hanging strings, covering the windows, going out blindfolded – dictated by the book?

Some of it was and some of it I came up with as a cinematic expression of that. The coiled string that Malorie uses.

What are some differences between the world of the book and the world of the film?

They’re going to bleed through in my brain because I started on that in July of 2013, nine months before the book actually got published because I was given early galleys of it. I started a pretty strong working relationship with the author where I would start pitching him ideas. Every now and then he would say, “That should go in the book. Is that all right?” I’d be like, “Well, take it.” We had a pretty strong relationship that led into not only the publication of the book, but developing the script.

My favorite part of this genre is when they go looking for supplies. So was the supermarket scene in the book?

Yeah, with the vampire car.

Were you able to elaborate on it?

Sure, that was an idea of mine that Josh Malerman found really evocative when we walked through how to be as smart as possible with that. Even down to making sure that someone taped over the rearview camera for instance. It harkened back to one of my favorite moments in The Hunt For Red October. There’s a Russian navigator in the Red October who talks about how if you gave him a stopwatch and a map of the Grand Canyon, he could fly a plane with no windows through it. That’s essentially what we did with the car here where they had to rely entirely on GPS.

Is the entity ever described in the book?

No. There was a moment in the screenplay where we decided to try and have our cake and eat it too in which Malorie is confronted in sort of a home invasion by one of the creatures and she sees it. Then she wakes up and we realize it’s a nightmare. It’s about what people imagine it is.

Does that go back to what was made most famous in Jaws, that what you imagine is scarier than anything you can describe or show?

Right, that’s the corner we painted ourselves into. We realized the moment that one of us started talking about even small features of what the monster might be, or the antagonist, down to a specific silhouette of a shadow or an appendage that entered the frame somewhere, there was always someone else in the room who would say, “Well, that isn’t scary to me.” So it defeated the purpose. We kept pulling back.

Did the book come with a clear set of rules for how this thing works?

Not inasmuch, no, because it’s kept confined to the POV of the characters involved. They have very limited information. Now and then, from maybe some isolated radio DJ you’d get a little bit more about the world and the rules. Again, that was filtered information from one person so you didn’t know if you could trust it. It allowed everybody to come up with their own belief system or their own theory about what the unknown is.

Did you come up with a bible of the rules?

Yeah, I had to do a fairly deep dive on that. It’s interesting writing a lot of supplementary information that doesn’t necessarily go into the script but is just there as reference.

Are there any cool reference materials that didn’t make it into the film?

Well, there was a character who didn’t make it into the final cut. He was an older man, Edgar. He was also in an early version of the novel that got pulled from the novel, and I thought maybe he would survive through the film as well. He showed up at the same time as Olympia. He acted as if he had encountered one of these already. He seemed a little unstable but he didn’t seem crazy. The fun reveal we had later on was that he has early onset Alzheimer’s so he had forgotten what the thing looked like, which saved his life.

Did you get some of the graphic ways people kill themselves from the book, or invent some of your own?

Some of that was new to me even. Obviously things change during shooting so they came up with some other ideas during production. I would say I tried to base as much of my script on the novel as possible because I think that was the space where Josh Malerman was particularly horrific. Especially in the double childbirth scene.

You’ve been a studio screenwriter. Was working for Netflix the same as doing films for Warner Bros., New Line and Universal?

No. It seemed like Netflix is fairly hands off. I didn’t get to experience much of that because so much of the script had been developed under Universal that by the time Netflix acquired it, they were going to go off and shoot it. Even then, I will say Netflix seemed to want it simply because they didn’t want to mess with it.

bird box review

Did Sandra Bullock have some good ideas when she came on?

Yes, definitely about her character, about Malorie and her motives. I feel like she had some personal experiences to draw upon that made it emotionally resonant for her. It was my job just to reinterpret that character for her. I think it made it better. Her performance is amazing.

Was the structure of present day and five years earlier in the book that way?

It was definitely there. My job was just to try and link those two timelines as much as possible in terms of transitions.

Did you write the Van Helsing script for Dark Universe or was that only announced?

I did that several years ago, yes.

Since we’ll probably never see it now, what was your take on Van Helsing?

Oh, man. I want to talk about it and yet I hope that maybe someday someone will come in there and excavate it and be able to do some version of it. Rather than jinx it, I’m going to hold off.

Is there any movement on Lights Out 2?

There is a little but until someone’s deal is closed I can’t talk about that either.

So you haven’t started writing.

Oh, no, I have a finished draft. I feel like that script is better than Lights Out, the first movie, in a lot of ways. I’m really proud of it.

Where were you able to go with a sequel?

I expanded.

Is Bloodshot your next film in production?

Let’s see. They’re aiming for February 2020 release date on that. I don’t know if anything’s going to sneak in before then. So probably. That was an assignment and I think I was the second write on. Jeff Wadlow did a lot of heavy lifting earlier on. I came in and stuck with it for quite a while. It’s based on the Valiant comic book title.

What else are you working on?

Oh my goodness. I’m developing two pilots right now. I’m hoping to hear today on one of them. Of course, I’m now in a more producorial role. I’ve partnered up with Lawrence Grey and we’re producing projects together. I’m still working on the Your Name adaptation, the anime adaptation for Bad Robot and Paramount. I have two other features that I’ve written that are currently top secret that I wish I could talk about.

Would you direct either of the pilots?

Not the pilots but I’m really gearing to direct at least one or two of the episodes during the season.

Is the Your Name adaptation a tough one to crack?

Oh sure, but I love that movie. I’ve found it an interesting challenge what the Japanese rights holders wanted in an adaptation.

What are they asking for?

You have to find the best iteration of that story based on the fact that they want an American live-action version of the film. They stated if they wanted a Japanese live-action version, they would just do it themselves. But they want to see it through the lens of a western viewpoint.

And the hubub over the Ghost in the Shell movie didn’t scare them off from Americanizing it?

Well, I think I was one of 20 or 30 people that pitched them a version of the adaptation. So they had a lot of choices. I can say that mine was not a Ghost in the Shell-like version.

Demolition gone wrong? Debris flung at busy road as multi-story building collapses (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/demolition-gone-wrong-debris-flung-at-busy-road-as-multi-story-building-collapses-video/ https://briefnews.eu/demolition-gone-wrong-debris-flung-at-busy-road-as-multi-story-building-collapses-video/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 04:39:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/demolition-gone-wrong-debris-flung-at-busy-road-as-multi-story-building-collapses-video/

An ominous black cloud engulfing the road and debris raining from above were not what drivers, waiting out a demolition of a Moscow roadside business center, expected when they captured it on video.

Scary footage showing a high-rise business center in northeastern Moscow going down in seconds has been making rounds online. The toppling tower appears to narrowly miss a nearby road and the cars on it.

The video was filmed on Wednesday evening as the long-planned demolition of the ‘Severyanin’ BC was getting underway. It shows the building crumble and belch out a thick cloud of black smoke or dust, which then envelops the road and the adjacent sidewalk.

While the construction company performing the works insisted that nothing out of the ordinary happened, witnesses to the epic collapse reported that some of the stray debris almost hit passing cars.

The video shows one of the cars passing the road a moment before the cloud blocks it off.

The construction company, meanwhile, denied that it botched the demolition, telling Moscow 24 channel that no debris landed on the sidewalk or the road and that the onlookers were simply spooked by the black cloud.  A spokesman for the company said that traffic was closed for the demolition, and the car that nearly got hit was driving in the wrong lane and had not heeded the orders of traffic police.

Tesla, SpaceX, and Boring Company CEO Elon Musk is good at finding alternative markets for his products. He did this with the lithium-ion batteries he was building and sourcing for his Model S, X, and eventually Model 3 cars: by developing a line of stationary storage battery products, he tapped into another well of potential customers at little additional expense.

Similarly, Musk told mayors on Thursday that he wants The Boring Company to dig sewers, water transport, and electrical tunnels under cities, in addition to the transportation-focused tunnels he hopes to dig to house electric skate systems.

Musk mentioned this alternate use for his boring machines at the National League of Cities’ City Summit, during a “fireside chat” with Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti. According to Forbes, Musk told the audience, “The Boring Company is also going to do tunneling for, like, water transport, sewage, electrical. We’re not going to turn our noses up at sewage tunnels. We’re happy to do that too.”
