Titular Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar is weighing on the scandal enveloping her former boss Joss Whedon.

In the wake of Charisma Carpenter’s stunning allegations that she suffered “toxic” and “hostile” abuse under the Buffyverse auteur, Gellar released her own statement.

“While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon,” she wrote on Instagram. “I am more focused on raising my family and surviving a pandemic currently, so I will not be making any further statements at this time. But I stand with all survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out.”

TVLine has reached out to reps for both Whedon and 20th Television (the studio behind Buffy and Angel) for comment.

Amber Benson, who played Tara on Buffy, echoed Carpenter’s general sentiment, saying on Twitter, “Buffy was a toxic environment and it starts at the top. @AllCharisma is speaking truth and I support her 100%. There was a lot of damage done during that time and many of us are still processing it twenty plus years later.”

We don’t yet know who is behind WandaVision’s seemingly perfect alternate reality — is Wanda the architect? Or could this be the work of a malevolent force? — but the Disney+ series is clear about who runs the suburban town within it.

In the second episode, titled “Don’t Touch That Dial,” we were introduced to Dottie Jones (Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Emma Caulfield), a Regina George-like figure who, according to Agness (Kathryn Hahn), is the “key to everything” in Westview.

She’s married to Phil (who was fired by Vision’s boss in the first episode, “Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience”) and isn’t particularly fond of the show’s titular heroes. (“I’ve heard things about you, you and your husband Vision,” she told Wanda during an icy exchange.) It’s unclear what her role will be as the story picks up, but judging by her memorable appearance, she’s just getting started.

“The whole thing’s a lot of fun,” Caulfield tells TVLine.

A jarring scene at the gazebo suggested there’s much more to Dottie than she’s currently letting on. When Wanda told her she means no harm, the well-dressed homemaker said she doesn’t believe her. Both women were then interrupted by Randall Park’s FBI agent Jimmy Woo calling to Wanda through the radio. The confusing moment seemingly snapped Dottie out of her sitcom character, and she questioned Wanda’s identity before shattering a glass in her hand, cutting herself in the process. Jumping back into character, Dottie made an off-the-cuff joke about bloodstains, and the moment was quickly forgotten.

“It’s incredibly disconcerting for Dottie to hear [the voice in the radio] as it is for Wanda. Both of us are having a surreal moment for very different reasons,” Caulfield explains. “But in the end, it’s terrifying for both of us, and there’s that element of gaining control of ourselves again.”

That bizarre moment is one of several that have left fans buzzing about Westview’s resident queen bee. In another, Wanda and Vision put on a disastrous yet hysterical magic show that briefly featured a fluffy white rabbit. The cameo has been interpreted as a nod to Caulfield’s beloved Buffy character Anya, who notoriously feared bunnies in the Joss Whedon series. However, Caulfield reveals that she didn’t make the Buffy connection until it was pointed out to her.

“I shot it, and I didn’t catch it. I didn’t have anything to do with the rabbit. This is Wanda’s action. It’s her magic act with Vision. I did not catch it,” she says. Caulfield reveals that she texted WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer, who she previously worked with on the 2009 sci-fi film Timer, to ask if that was an intentional reference.

“She would have said something if that was her intention, to put that little Buffy Easter egg in there. She never said anything to me about it, so I think it’s pure coincidence,” she adds, while noting that “it would make sense that somebody would throw a fun little Easter egg in there like that.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s 25 Greatest Characters of All Time, Ranked https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayers-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/ https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayers-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/#respond Sun, 30 Aug 2020 19:27:44 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayers-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/

Nearly 20 years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer last aired, TVLine is raising the cult-classic series from the dead for a reevaluation of sorts. We’re not questioning whether it was as excellent as we remember — we’ve rewatched it often enough to know that it was. But we are wondering whether the characters that we liked the best… actually were the best.

To that end, we’ve singled out the 25 fictional individuals — OK, and a grouping here and there — that we still think put the “super” in the supernatural. Among them are — well, duh — the title character, a heroine for the ages; more than one version of not only her closest friend but her boyfriend; an airhead who all these years later is still on our minds; and a vamp whose nickname really shouldn’t have been William the Bloody but William the Bloody Awesome.

No doubt, you will have… um, let’s call them feelings about the characters who have been excluded from this list. There are probably even at least a couple of you who will cry foul over the absence of a certain ultra-annoying Key, aka the Cousin Oliver of the Buffyverse. You may render your complaints to your hearts’ content in the comments section below.

But first, you should check out how we’ve ranked our Top 25 by clicking on the photo gallery above (or going here for direct access). Then and only then should you move on to the comments and reveal whether you think our countdown bites… or sucks. Ready… set… click.

10 Nixed Spinoffs We Wish We’d Seen: Buffy, Gossip Girl, The Office and More https://briefnews.eu/10-nixed-spinoffs-we-wish-wed-seen-buffy-gossip-girl-the-office-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/10-nixed-spinoffs-we-wish-wed-seen-buffy-gossip-girl-the-office-and-more/#respond Sun, 28 Jun 2020 00:07:08 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/10-nixed-spinoffs-we-wish-wed-seen-buffy-gossip-girl-the-office-and-more/

Would you have watched a show focused on Buffy‘s Faith? How about one in which The Office‘s Dwight runs a farm? Or a teen drama starring Brittany Snow and Krysten Ritter as a pair of Gossip girls in 1980s Los Angeles? So. Would. We.

That’s what makes this gallery so bittersweet. It’s a reminder of 10+ promising spinoff concepts that tragically never made it to series. Some were presented as backdoor pilots, while others were merely ideas bandied around by the series’ creators, but they were all very real possibilities.

And we understand that spinoffs are tricky. On one hand, some of today’s most celebrated series (i.e. The Good Fight and Better Call Saul) are byproducts of pre-existing shows. On the other hand — and it’s really big hand — an ill-conceived spinoff can tarnish a character’s legacy and alienate a previously loyal fandom. (Raise your hand if you still suffer from Joey-related night terrors.)

But the one thing that all of those shows, both good and bad, have in common is that they were given a chance. (And before you ask us why we didn’t include Gilmore Girls‘ Jess-centric spinoff on our list, just know that it was considered… and quickly vetoed.)

Browse our gallery of nixed spinoffs we wish had been ordered to series — you can click here for direct access — then drop a comment with your own picks below. Which would-be spinoffs would you add to our list?

SNL: Chance the Rapper Name-Checks Angel and Buffy in Monologue Rap https://briefnews.eu/snl-chance-the-rapper-name-checks-angel-and-buffy-in-monologue-rap/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-chance-the-rapper-name-checks-angel-and-buffy-in-monologue-rap/#respond Sun, 27 Oct 2019 05:01:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snl-chance-the-rapper-name-checks-angel-and-buffy-in-monologue-rap/

In an ode to also-rans everywhere, Chance the Rapper spent this week’s Saturday Night Live monologue extolling the virtues of the second-best things, people and places in life.

The exuberant song was spurred by the fact that it was his second time hosting the late-night sketch show (and the first pulling double-duty as both host and musical guest). “To honor my hometown, I’m going to do a song about Chicago, the Second City,” he announced at the top of the show. What followed was a tune that paid homage to Pepsi, Adam Carolla, Redbox and Bing, as well as Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s spinoff series Angel.

Read the complete lyrics to the monologue rap below, then press PLAY on the video at the bottom of the post to hear it for yourself.

Now, I love Chicago, the city that fathered me
Called the Second City, but that doesn’t bother me
I’ve gotta tell ya, I think it’s the reverse
‘Cause sometimes, the second-best is better than the first
Sometimes, the second-best is better than the first
Like, I don’t like Google, I use Bing
I like french fries from Burger King
When it comes to Harry Potter, people give me grief
‘Cause I prefer Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief
I only drink Pepsi, never Coca-Cola
Jimmy Kimmel’s fine, but I love Adam Carolla
And Robin Gibb? Favorite Bee Gee
I hate Mario, love Luigi
I’m the kind of guy that likes the second-best better
I’m the kind of guy that likes the second-best one
I like DMC better than Run
‘Cause I’m the kind of guy that likes the second best, son

Cast member Kyle Mooney then joined Chance, saying he could relate, because he’s from San Diego, “kind of the Second City of California.” And though the host was dubious, Mooney joined in.

Now me and Chance, we live that thug life
‘Cause we like Antz more than Bug’s Life
Sense and Sensibility‘s better than Pride and Prejudice
Never had Nintendo, but I rocked a Sega Genesis
Yo I like Scrappy more than Scooby-Doo
I don’t like Chili’s, but I love Chili’s Too
I like the Clippers, the Nets and the White Sox
I don’t have Netflix, I like Redbox
I use DHL for my overnight shipping
And my favorite Bulls player? Scottie Pippen
I like Hanukkah more than Christmas, and I don’t like islands, but I love isthmuses.

After some debate about whether isthmuses could be considered second-rate islands (“for the purposes of this song, yes,” Mooney argued), the pair went in for the final verses.

Instead of Starbucks, you know what I do?
I go to Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf or Caribou
Lunchtime, I don’t have to think it over
I skip Chipotle, head to Qdoba
Some people like Mase more than Puffy
I like the show Angel better than Buffy
And my favorite show about ’90s teens
Wasn’t Saved by the Bell, it was California Dreams

Yeah, I’m the kind of guy that likes the second-best better
I think Chicago is better than the rest
I take seconds at dinner and second glances
I believe in second chances
I love my wife and my family is true
A month ago, we welcomed Daughter Number 2
Now I’m in New York, it’s great to be alive
I’m back for the second time hosting Saturday Night Live!

  • Gellar, who played the titular role Buffy Summers, said that she has moved on from the role and will not appear in an on-screen or be involved in any other capacity.
  • “I don’t know anything about it, honestly. I think that it’s a great story and I’m glad that it will get retold and hope that people will watch it,” she said. “But, you know, I’ve told my story with it.”
  • The reboot, will take place 15 years after the original series’ finale in 2003 and center around a new slayer.
  • Gellar will be focusing on other projects, like her Super Bowl ad, which will air on Sunday.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is currently starring in her first Super Bowl ad.

From the sound of things, she is not on the verge of starring in the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot. When asked about potentially appearing on the series, Gellar responded, saying: “I don’t know anything about it, honestly. Book Excerpt: Meet the New ‘Slayer’ from the ‘Buffy’ Universe https://briefnews.eu/book-excerpt-meet-the-new-slayer-from-the-buffy-universe/ https://briefnews.eu/book-excerpt-meet-the-new-slayer-from-the-buffy-universe/#respond Thu, 03 Jan 2019 02:25:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/book-excerpt-meet-the-new-slayer-from-the-buffy-universe/ Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains one of our forever faves, a whip-smart, wickedly funny, and proudly empowering series that, unlike a lot of your favorite ‘90s pop culture, still holds up. So we’re just fine with the expansion of the “Buffy universe” in the form of both new television ventures and new books — such as Slayer, Kiersten White’s new novel (out next Tuesday in hardback and ebook from Simon Pulse), which introduces us to new slayer Nina. And, per the press release, “Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.”

We’re proud to present this exclusive excerpt from Slayer:

FROM CHAPTER FOUR OF ‘SLAYER’

We had three mothers, each with a distinct time period.

The first: dream mother.

In my memory, she smells like snickerdoodles.

She sang to us. Read books with pictures of happy things instead of scaly demons. Laughed. I think she laughed, anyway. Whenever I try to picture it, I can’t quite manage to match up sound with image. It’s like watching a silent movie. And the end of the movie is my dad, with his graying mustache and his kind eyes, kneeling to give each of us a hug.

Mom says something to him—what does she say?—then kisses him. We wave as he walks out the door. Mom looks proud and sad all at once and shoos us into the kitchen for cookies.

My dad never came back, and that mom—snickerdoodle mom—was gone too. In a way, Buffy took both of them from me. I never met the Slayer. I don’t even know if she knew we existed. But when my dad died for her, dream mother died too.

The second: ghost mother.

After that night we were attacked in the cemetery, Mom was always there, but . . . she wasn’t. We moved constantly. I can’t remember her working or doing anything.

There were no cookies. There was only the two of us and our mother, hovering. Haunting and haunted. Standing by the window with the curtains drawn, peering out the crack where they didn’t quite meet. We had lost our father, and we lost our mother too. She was a shell of herself. We looked to her for comfort and found only fear. So Artemis and I whispered, played quieter. Hid our stakes in less obvious places so she’d stop taking them away. Figured out how to care for each other so we wouldn’t disrupt her vigil. It wasn’t ideal, but it was okay.

And then everything burned down.

The third: not mother.

After the fire, she stopped being our mother and started being a Watcher. I didn’t realize how odd it was that we had been raised apart from them until we rejoined them in London and I saw how Watcher society functioned. We didn’t even live together as a family anymore. Artemis and I went to the dorms, and my mother had her own apartment in the Council’s wing.

It felt like she was rejecting me again. But maybe part of her decision to switch from being a mother to being a Watcher was so that she didn’t have to face me. We never once talked about why she picked Artemis first. I sometimes thought about forcing it, but in the end, I preferred not knowing. It couldn’t be any worse than what her actual explanation would be for why she left me behind.

I hadn’t died that night, but sometimes, when I was with my mother, it felt like I had. Like I was as missing from her world as my dad was.

Some characters just know how to make an entrance. Take Nicollette Sheridan’s Alexis, for example, who recently made her Dynasty reboot debut in grand fashion, much like her predecessor Joan Collins did on the original series.

In honor of the diva’s (second) first appearance, TVLine is looking back at the small screen’s most memorable intros, featuring faves from Supernatural, Lost, The Vampire Diaries and more. (With one presidential exception, we avoided main characters whom we met in series premieres.)

Some arrivals were long-awaited, like How I Met Your Mother‘s titular mama, while others came as a complete shock — Buffy has a what now?! — to viewers. And there must be something about the name that says “Here I am!” because more than one “Alexis” made our list.

Also in our trip down memory lane: A Grey’s ex, a Frozen princess and a mother-daughter spy reunion.
