By mid-May, the broadcast networks must make some tough calls as to which series will return for the 2018-19 TV season, and which… won’t.

As that deadline draws near, TVLine is singling out a few “bubble” shows and sizing up their prospects — based in large part on creative strides (and stumbles) and future potential, but also with a requisite nod to cold, hard numbers.

Next up is CBS’ often-prescient political drama.

THE SHOW | CBS’ Madam Secretary (Sundays at 10/9c)

THE CASE FOR KEEPING | No matter which party you espouse, you’ve gotta admit: Real-life politics these days is exhausting. Which is why Madam Secretary‘s fictional, yes, but also aspirational White House provides such a welcome respite each Sunday. As President Dalton (Keith Carradine) wrestles with the international issues of our day, he seeks the sage counsel of Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni). And Elizabeth, in exchange, consults with her staff of patriotic policy wonks, who help her solve dicey diplomatic dilemmas by the end of the hour.

Now in its fifth season, the CBS drama has an eerie tendency to hit on global issues just as they surface in the real world; recent episodes have touched on family separation at the United States border and America’s tenuous relationships with China and Russia. But it’s not all resolutions and attachés: The addition of Elizabeth’s religion professor husband, Henry (Tim Daly), as White House ethics advisor, though slightly improbable, has only strengthened the couple’s interaction this season — and that’s a big plus for those of us who enjoy the McCord family dynamic as much as, if not more than, the West Wing goings-on.

THE CASE FOR CUTTING | Since the show has established that Elizabeth has designs on the Oval Office, there’s no story-related reason to end the series now. In fact, at least one more season highlighting her experiences during a presidential run seems like a rather good idea. However, the show’s ratings aren’t a slam-dunk for renewal.

Averaging not quite a 0.6 demo rating and 5.5 million total viewers, Madam Secretary is nearly on par with its prior season average, which is no small deal in these times. And yet the fact remains that it ranks practically last (only beating Saturday’s Ransom) out of CBS’ 16 dramas in the demo, and places only slightly higher when it comes to total audience. Will its fate as the oft-delayed Sunday-night closer spare it, or put it once again on the chopping block?

  • According to the NCAA, the new system uses game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses to rank teams and ultimately determine who will make the tournament field come March.
  • The NCAA released its first set of NET rankings Monday afternoon.
  • College basketball fans are roasting the new system after it ranked the Ohio State Buckeyes No. 1 and has the Kentucky Wildcats on the tournament bubble.

The NCAA introduced a new system to replace the RPI in ranking each of college basketball’s 353 Division I programs.

The Nobel Laureate explained: “If the markets go down, it could bring on another recession. The housing market has been an important element of economic activity. If people start to get pessimistic about housing and pull back and don’t want to buy, there will be a drop in construction jobs and that could be a seed for another recession.” He added: “By the way, we’re overdue for another recession.”

When reminded that 2006 predated the greatest financial crisis in a lifetime, Shiller acknowledged that any correction would likely be far less severe.

“The drop in home prices in the financial crisis was the most severe drop in the US market since my data begin in 1890,” the Yale economist said.

“It could be that we’re primed to repeat it because it’s in our memory and we’re thinking about it but still I wouldn’t expect something as severe as the Great Financial Crisis coming on right now. There could be a significant correction or bear market, but I’m waiting and seeing now.”

The infamous US housing bubble in the mid-2000s and the subsequent subprime meltdown were key factors spurring the broader financial crisis of 2008. A speculative frenzy over house prices, mortgages beyond long-term capabilities to finance, and eventually a wave of defaults by borrowers, threatened the solvency of some key financial institutions which in turn led to a stock market crash, and the global financial crisis.

“I think as Americans lose their jobs, they are going to see the cost of living going up rather dramatically, and so this is going to make it particularly painful,” he said.

Stock markets sank on Wednesday and Thursday, led by a steep decline in tech shares and worries of rapidly rising rates which made investors flee the risky stocks.

Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 posted their biggest one-day drops since February. The Nasdaq notched its largest single day sell-off since June 2016.

US President Donald Trump has blamed the central bank for the selloff, saying the Federal Reserve “has gone crazy.”

According to Schiff, the Fed has been acting irrationally for a long time: “What is crazy is for the Fed to believe that they can raise interest rates without pricking their own bubble.”

Schiff added: “All bear markets start off as corrections. I think this one is probably a bear market. It’s long overdue. This is a bigger bubble than the one that blew up in 2008, and the crisis that is going to ensue is going to be far larger.”

Using social media is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can connect us to many more people than we would otherwise interact with, which is great. But our choices regarding who we interact with (often amplified by a platform’s algorithms) limit many of our social networks in a  way that keeps us tucked within an echo chamber of people who think like us. And in that mode, our social interaction may exacerbate tribal attitudes towards people outside our groups rather than breaking down barriers.

For people studying partisan divides on various topics, there is a lot going on here. When people in a group work to understand information, everyone generally benefits. But the opposite can be true if we instead retreat to our mental fortresses, man the catapults, and prepare the boiling oil. So for a real-world problem like the partisan divide on climate change, how can we say if social networking is helping or hurting?

Douglas Guilbeault, Joshua Becker, and Damon Centola at the University of Pennsylvania set out to design an experiment that could test whether simple signals trip our mental defense mechanisms. Rather than gather a bunch of people in a room—where you might size each other up in ways the researchers couldn’t control—they created a web interface that was used by 2,400 people recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk service.
