The NHS advises people to brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about two minutes to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy.

Tooth brushing stops plaque building up, and you should try to make sure you brush every surface of all your teeth.

But according to one dentist, many people have the technique of brushing their teeth all wrong.

Celebrity Dentist, Dr Richard Marques says scrubbing your teeth is bad.

He explained: “Scrubbing your teeth is really bad because you can wear the teeth enamel and/or gums away but electric toothbrushes are wonderful to ensure you don’t do this and have a great cleaning technique.

“The new Sonicare Diamond Clean Smart editor is amazing – it won’t wear the teeth and gums as it uses vibrations rather than scrubbing motions and the app will also monitor your brushing (like the “fit bit” of oral Healthcare).”

People with good oral health will probably need to attend the dentist for a check up once every 12 to 24 months.

Leading virtual currency bitcoin blasted to another all-time high above $ 18,400 on Saturday. Traders are continuing to defy warnings of the risks of investing in the highly volatile and speculative instrument.

The cryptocurrency has gained a staggering 1,800 percent this year. This month, bitcoin has climbed more than 80 percent – on pace for the best monthly gain since December 2013.

The virtual currency has added another fifth to its value this week following the start of bitcoin futures trading on the Chicago-based Cboe last weekend. Its crosstown rival, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group plans to launch its own version of bitcoin futures trading on December 18, while the NASDAQ said it is getting ready for a similar launch in 2018.

“The hope is that futures signal the unlocking of institutional money into the digital arena and that there will be a rapid demand increase and ratification of the technology and its principles,” said the founder of industry website Cryptocompare Charles Hayter, as quoted by Reuters.

Both experienced, and newcomer investors have jumped on the bitcoin bandwagon despite numerous warnings from regulators. The latest was issued on Friday by the UK Financial Conduct Authority.

“If you want to invest in bitcoin, be prepared to lose all your money,” the agency’s chief executive Andrew Bailey told the BBC.

According to Baily, bitcoin cannot be a secure investment due to a lack of proper backing from governments and central banks and likened buying the cryptocurrency to gambling with the same level of risk.

Some analysts say bitcoin is a massive bubble that threatens the financial stability of traditional currencies and markets.

“Our evidence finds that the price of bitcoin has been artificially inflated by speculative investment, putting it in a bubble. Although bitcoin is not regulated by governments, it could still have a knock-on effect on traditional markets due to the interconnectedness of cryptocurrency markets with other financial assets,” said a report by Anglia Ruskin University, Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University.

Bitcoin was trading at $ 18,482 at 13:30 GMT with its market value surpassing $ 300 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

Analysis of mouth bacteria showed that some types that lead to common gum problems were associated with higher risk of oesophageal cancer.

Higher levels of one type of bacteria, which is linked to periodontal disease, was associated with a 21 per cent increased risk of cancer, the study found.

Oesophageal cancer is the eighth most common version of the condition. It is also the sixth leading cause of cancer death worldwide, researchers said.

But because the disease is often not discovered until it has reached an advanced stage, five-year survival rates range from about 15 to 25 per cent worldwide.

Lead researcher Jiyoung Ahn of New York University, said: “Oesophageal cancer is a highly fatal cancer and there is an urgent need for new avenues of prevention, risk stratification, and early detection.”

Previous research has shown that periodontal disease caused by certain bacteria has been associated with several types of cancer, including oral and head and neck cancers.

The study examined whether these were associated with subsequent risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma or oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

The researchers collected oral wash samples from 122,000 participants in two large health studies. Over 10 years of follow-up, 106 participants developed oesophageal cancer.

Prof Ahn said the study confirms good oral health, including regular brushing and dental visits, is an important way to guard against cancer and associated health conditions.

However, researchers did not have complete information on the participants’ oral health.

This meant they could not determine whether the presence of pathogens was enough to affect oesophageal cancer risk, or whether full-blown periodontal disease was the risk factor.

The study was published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
