Randall finishes off Tuesday’s This Is Us with some hard-won peace: Finally, he — and we — know exactly why his birth mother, Laurel, never tried to find him.

In short: Her overdose following his birth led to her going to jail for five years, after which an overwhelming sense of shame kept her from searching for her son. (For a more detailed explanation, read our recap of the episode.)

In an interview Tuesday, series star Sterling K. Brown told TVLine that Randall has spent years circling the same questions: Was he loved? And if so, why was he given up? “People who love you don’t do that sort of thing,” the Emmy winner said. As such, Laurel’s story only mattered to Randall in relation to how it affected him on a personal level.

But in this week’s hour, after having a cathartic vision of his mother in the lake behind her house, “That clicks in his head,” Brown added. “‘I have been, to a certain extent, selfish in terms of how I thought about this woman. And now I just need to recognize and appreciate all that she has gone through to be where she is.’”

Read on for more of Brown’s thoughts on the episode, including what it might mean for Randall and Kevin’s ongoing argument, as well as the decision process behind Randall’s baring his soul and… other things.

this is us season 5 episode 6 sterling k brown interview randall mother lake TVLINE | You hear that Randall is going to find out all about his mom and then he’s going to have this moment of catharsis. What was your first take?
When Dan [Fogelman, series creator] first pitched that his mom is still alive, my first thought is, “Alright: Are we jumping the shark? Are we still maintaining the integrity of this whole thing?” He was like, “She’s not alive, but what happened was we thought that she OD’d, but she didn’t.” I was like, “OK. So then how come she hasn’t come to see me? If she’s been alive and she had this child, then why did she not make her presence known in my life?” and then they answered that question. There was a series of things that I was like, “Alright, does this make sense? Does this track?” And it all checked out. I should never doubt Dan. And shout out to Kay [Oyegun] and Eboni [Freeman] for writing a great episode, and to Kay for directing it, as well.

There was an interesting thing for me, and I don’t think this is acutely stated in the episode. But that moment of release for Randall, and the idea that he had this encounter with his mom in the lake — we’re not an overtly religious show, but it has spiritual overtones. And Randall primarily is a man of science, right? And not so much a man of faith. But this instance, because he lives with anxiety and whatnot, and I do believe to a certain extent beyond just the chemical level, it’s hard for anxiety and faith to exist in the same space. So for him to have this recognition that this woman actually loved me, that I was the product of two people who loved me but circumstances conspired in such a way that they weren’t able to share their love with me in a direct manner? I’m OK with that.

TVLINE | Beth remarks that there’s a lightness in him at the end of the episode. Moving forward, how will we see this epiphany manifest in the rest of his life?
Good question. So the first catalyst really is a step toward reconciliation with his brother, and seeing how not being able to make peace with your past and having shame or frustration can keep people from being connected who should be connected to one another. Laurel saw that in Hai and in her inability to make peace with her parents before passing away. [Randall] desperately loves Kevin. And he knows, and his brother knows, too, that they said just some sh—y, sh—y things to each other. But hopefully, that doesn’t have to define their relationship in perpetuity. The recognition that forgiveness is essential for any relationship to persevere is firmly imprinted on him by virtue of this experience…

My hope is that he learns to let go. To borrow a phrase from the Black community, and spirituality — Christianity, specifically — to “Let go and let God.” To recognize that the fallacy of control is something you have to willingly relinquish in order to actually be able to enjoy the moment, to live free. There’s moments that I watch in the episode, there’s echoings of Bible verses from his maternal grandfather to his mom and then conversations between his great-aunt and his mom in terms of how to let go. Ultimately, that moment of being in the lake and just — it is a scream, but it’s a big exhale. It’s like “I don’t have to have the answer in order to be OK.” I feel like, for Randall, so much of his being OK is wrapped up in “What do I do? How do I respond? How do I fix?” I don’t have to have the answer in order to be OK. I would like to see that incorporated into him as we move into the next phase of the show.

this is us sterling k brown interview randall mother lake season 5 episode 6TVLINE | I’m going to follow up your very well-thought-out answer with a very silly question: For a 9 o’clock network show, when Randall strips down to get into the water, we see a bit more than usual. Were you like, “Yes! This is what he would do!” or was there any thought of, “Um, I’m not sure about this?”
That was an interesting conversation. Kay had called me up earlier in the season and was like, “So, we’re planning Episode 6, and we have this sort of baptismal thing we’re trying to accomplish, and I was thinking we’ll have you go down to your boxers and into the water. But Dan was thinking that maybe, if you were comfortable with it, you could just enter into it in your birthday suit.” I thought about it more from a spiritual aspect, of a rebirth or cleansing and not having anything stand between me and that. And I was like, “That makes sense.”

Now, let me say this, too, right? When I saw it, I was like, “That is a bit of cake.” [Laughs] More than I anticipated seeing in the primetime, 9 o’clock slot on the TV. I guess it is the shadow of the cake, when you really check it out. And I will gladly thank Peloton for assisting and augmenting.

“But this is a negotiating tactic,” Brown continued. “He thinks, as he did the last time, that someone will come in and save the day for him.

“He will make a last minute deal, he wants to go straight to the European council people.

“And he thinks Angela Merkel will accept that the rule of law might be broken and that’s just not going to happen.”

However later in the conversation, Brown’s screen froze when answering one of Stayt’s questions.

This Is Us’ Sterling K. Brown Breaks Down Randall’s Rocky Start at Therapy: ‘He Can No Longer Pretend’ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-sterling-k-brown-breaks-down-randalls-rocky-start-at-therapy-he-can-no-longer-pretend/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-sterling-k-brown-breaks-down-randalls-rocky-start-at-therapy-he-can-no-longer-pretend/#respond Wed, 26 Feb 2020 08:12:33 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-sterling-k-brown-breaks-down-randalls-rocky-start-at-therapy-he-can-no-longer-pretend/ If it seemed like This Is Us‘ Randall was spoiling for a fight the moment he sat down in his therapist’s office Tuesday, series star Sterling K. Brown says, well, he was.

This week’s episode spent a significant amount of time on how the city councilman did not want to address his anxiety, his feelings about Rebecca’s deteriorating memory or his slipping sense of control — and how minuscule details like his new therapist’s coffeemaker or her questionable taste in artwork nearly sent an agitated Randall over the edge. (Read a full recap here.)

Eventually, after Beth made it clear how much her husband’s emotional unease was affecting their marriage and family, Randall gave psychoanalysis another shot. But oof, what a painful way to get there! TVLine got series star Sterling K. Brown on the phone to give us the lowdown on Randall’s uncomfortable attempt at introspection and to hint at why an upcoming installment “may be one of my favorite episodes we’ve shot in the past four years.”

TVLINE | This is Randall at a new, anxious level, when he first walks into that office.
Yes, it is.

TVLINE | We’ve talked before about how he often thinks he’s the smartest person in the room. Does he think he’s smarter than his therapist?
Absolutely. I think he’s already, fairly or unfairly — probably unfairly — judged what he thought he was going to be receiving in terms of treatment. The fact that she didn’t have cups for the water cooler, that crappy painting in his mind that she has on the wall, the fact that she can’t turn off the dadgum coffee machine. You know what? Have things together. Present yourself in such a way that the little things matter. Because she didn’t take care of those things, he had written her off from the beginning.

TVLINE | It seems like he’s looking for a reason to get mad and leave.
Yes. Yes.

TVLINE | We run into that the most when she says she already knows who he is. Why do you think that, in particular, sets him off?
Two parts. There’s the assumption that there’s a blank slate, so you get the chance to present yourself to people the way that you want to. And the idea that someone has information on him that he didn’t expect means that he can no longer pretend to be something different. Also the fact that she didn’t share that information at the very beginning, he found a little upsetting, that she held that card close to her vest. But I think when you’re not looking to be your authentic self and you want to have the option of presenting the self that you want to be seen as, when somebody has inside information, that sort of debunks that attempt.

THis Is Us Randalls Therapist Season 4TVLINE | The idea that the family might not fall apart without Randall taking care of everything brings him up short. Do you think he’d ever considered that possibility before?
No. [Laughs] I don’t. I think he fully expects that if he did not assume the level of responsibility he had after the passing of his dad, that things could have gone a very different way for his family, and that that different way would not be as positive as the way things have played themselves out thusly. I think he feels that sincerely, and I don’t think he feels it in an egomaniacal sort of way. He’s like, “Somebody has to step up. My sister is reeling from the loss of my dad, my brother took off to go become an actor. Somebody has to keep it together. And while I could’ve gone off and had a completely different like, possibly, I decided to stay home. I decided to come back every weekend to make sure things were good. I decided to teach my mom how to use a computer program so that she could be hirable to take on her new job. I did those things, and I’m not necessarily looking for credit from them, from external forces, but dadgum it, I did it. And nobody else did.”

TVLINE | He goes back to the therapist’s office for Beth’s sake, when he might not have gone back for his own. That’s very sweet, but also a little sad.
There’s a recognition at the end that his mental health doesn’t just affect him. That was the way that he was thinking about it before. Because if I go run, I can take care of myself and I’m “fine.” But the way that I’m navigating this world necessarily impacts the people that I love, my ride-or-die, my partner. And when she says that “I am afraid to share the things that are going on with me, in my life because I don’t know if you can take it,” then he says, “OK. Let me take a step back. Reevaluate for the sake and sanctity of my marriage. It’s not about me anymore. It’s about us.”

THis Is Us Randalls Therapist Season 4TVLINE | You get to play with Pamela Adlon now for a while. You’ve said this therapy storyline influences the last four episodes of the season.
Yeah. I love that woman so much. We first got to meet a few years ago when we were both nominated for Emmys… and just hit it off. When you meet a real human being — not just an artist whose work you appreciate to the highest level, but someone who is authentically themselves? Like, nobody is realer than Miss Pamela. I told her before, I said, “How did Dan [Fogelman, series creator] get you to do this?” This woman is running her own show, she writes every episode, she directs every episode, she produces it. I was like, “How did he do this?” She was like, “I have no idea.” But I think it’s because there’s real love for one another, and then we got to play with each other. That may have been the straw that broke her camel’s back and say, “OK, this may be something worth doing.”

We had a great time. You’ll see her again in Episode 17. I haven’t seen it yet — I’ll be honest with you — but I think it may be one of my favorite episodes we’ve shot in the past four years.

ABC’s broadcast of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving on Wednesday drew 5.5 million total viewers and a 1.2 rating, down 11 and 20 percent from last year yet still topping the night in the demo.

CBS’ Survivor (6.5 mil/1.1) dipped a tenth in the demo but drew Wednesday’s largest audience. SEAL Team (5.8 mil/0.8) and SWAT (5.2 mil/0.7) both rose to hit season highs in both measures.

Elsewhere….

NBC | Ellen’s Game of Games did 4 mil and a 0.7, followed by the SNL Thanksgiving special’s 3.4 mil/0.9.

FOX | Leading out of a Masked Singer rerun, a fresh Almost Family (1.4 mil/0.4) slipped to series lows.

THE CW | The iHeart Radio Music Festival, Night 1 drew 830,000 total viewers and a 0.2 demo rating.

The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our daily-ish ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increases in delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms. These Live+Same Day numbers instead are used to illustrate any trends or high/low superlatives. Happy Fun Ball may stick to certain types of skin.

SEAL Team’s Neil Brown Jr. Previews Ray’s Next Run as Bravo 1, Whether He Can Help Jason Ease His Pain https://briefnews.eu/seal-teams-neil-brown-jr-previews-rays-next-run-as-bravo-1-whether-he-can-help-jason-ease-his-pain/ https://briefnews.eu/seal-teams-neil-brown-jr-previews-rays-next-run-as-bravo-1-whether-he-can-help-jason-ease-his-pain/#respond Tue, 26 Nov 2019 23:07:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/seal-teams-neil-brown-jr-previews-rays-next-run-as-bravo-1-whether-he-can-help-jason-ease-his-pain/

RELATED STORIES

This Wednesday at 9/8c, CBS’ SEAL Team braves another operation without Jason at the helm. Instead, Ray will again lead the charge as Bravo 1, subbing for his injured brother, as the team ventures into enemy territory — during the light of day — to rescue a downed Marine pilot.

TVLine spoke with series vet Neil Brown Jr. about his character’s bittersweet “promotion,” the dangerous obstacles immediately ahead, and whether Ray can help nudge Jason toward the help he so desperately needs.

TVLINE | Ray made some bold calls last week as Bravo 1. Does he realize they just got by, by the skin of their teeth?
I think they always do. If you see the way they operate, they’re always just a sliver away from it going bad. They just have to take all the information and make the right call. But I think Raymond is well-informed, and more often than not he makes the right call.

TVLINE | Is this current scenario a bit bittersweet for Ray, because it means Jason is on the sidelines?
Absolutely, 100 percent. He’d rather his brother be there with him in any capacity, let alone as team leader. They’ve been working together so long, he’d rather see his best friend and brother walk away on his own decision as opposed to being sidelined. I know that Ray will do his best to lead Bravo in the way that Jason would, albeit a little more cautiously. Jason can be a bit wild, and that’s why they work so well, because Ray will reel it in a bit.

TVLINE | That’s why I loved the point that Ray made in choosing the new guy, because you don’t want two Jasons. You need the balance.
That was his call, and that was one of the reasons why they chose Vic, played by Lucca De Oliveira, over Yoder. Bravo works so well because at the head you have these two guys who both actually think in the same way, but one is more cautious than the other. One thinks about things that the other one doesn’t. It’s like the left and right side of each other’s brain.

SEAL Team Season 3TVLINE | Are we going to get any thoughts from Naima on Ray’s current situation?
Interestingly enough, one of the things that’s causing more pressure on Ray, and on the team as well, is because there’s this warrant officer track that he’s on, and then now he has to run the team. So he’s got all the eyes on him now, and of course there is his home life and Naima, played by Parisa [Fakhri], who is just amazing. There are some things you’ll see in the next few episodes about how they’re dealing with it all, but they’re a power couple and a team within the team that finds their way, no matter what.

TVLINE |  I was pleased to see them come out of the other side of last season  stronger, because it was getting a bit dicey there during that long deployment and with that woman at the bar….
Which was nothing. I think that speaks more to people’s own desires more so than it speaks to Raymond. As soon as he opened his eyes up and realized that this woman was smitten with him, that was the last time he spoke to her. He pulled his hand away and was like, “No, no, no,” and then was mad at himself for letting it get that far. Some guys’ thing is cheating on their wives; Ray would never do that. His was trying to quell his anger, and because of that anger he had a cloudy mind. He was talking to someone outside of his marriage and outside of his team because he was very embarrassed about how he was feeling, and very angry about how he was feeling. He didn’t want the people he loved the most to have to worry about him or feel that or didn’t even think that they cared. The journey of faith can be these huge peaks and valleys, and that’s what that was.

TVLINE | Yeah, Ray was quite unsettled last season by that guy not getting his last rites — which was an interesting beat for the show to play.
Yeah. I mean at a certain point he blamed Jason for it, but then he blamed himself, and then he blamed God. These guys work so very hard and they give their lives and their bodies and their minds to the job. For someone like Ray, who has the only good home life, it’s very difficult to balance all that. And one thing that keeps Ray right is his faith. Before that, he was a wild guy, so when that cracks, it’s like, “Oh, my God.” What happens then? But he found his way back, and he and Naima have had tons of conversations outside of the ones we’ve seen, and they found their way back to happiness and joy.

SEAL Team 3x08TVLINE | Give me a sense of the challenges that the Ray-led team will face this week, as they try to rescue a pilot who has fallen into enemy territory.
They’re going into, as you say, enemy territory, but they’re typically coming in under the cover of night. One of the most dangerous things — and the reason why I liked last season, because it was so dangerous for Ray to be out there in Episode 21 — was because it became daytime and he was alone, and that’s when they’re vulnerable. At night, the SEALS control things because they’re smooth, they’re fast, you won’t know they’re there, but in the daytime they become a target. That’s part of what’s going to play into this next episode. You have an unknown number of enemy combatants and we don’t know the assets that they have…. [Rescuing] the pilot becomes a difficult task, increasingly, as it goes on. There are going to be a lot of obstacles that weren’t expected.

TVLINE | Will there be a specific, difficult call for Ray to make?
There’ll be multiple hard calls to make, because somebody may get in more trouble than we needed them to, than we were prepared for at the time.

Seal Team Season 3 Ray JasonTVLINE | We the viewers have seen Jason just imploding, inside his home, trashing the place…. He’s not dealing with his situation well, at all. Will the team-at-large get an inkling of just how bad a place he is in?
Ray, his best friend, knows exactly how bad he’s got it, but he also knows that his friend throughout the years has had to be dealt with in different ways. Sometimes he has to back away completely, and sometimes he has to step in his friend’s face and tell him like it is, and sometimes he has to just be an open ear. Albeit, with the coming trials of the promotion and having to run the team and then all the stuff they went through last year, it’s become increasingly difficult for Ray to be there for his friend as much as he would like to be. So what Raymond has advocated for, for a few seasons now, is therapy — “You need to talk to someone.”

I think the hope is that Jason will eventually talk to someone and find a way to let go of some of this bottled-up pain, which they all need to do. Ray has that with his wife, and he talks to her. He doesn’t tell her everything or anything like that, but he has a release valve. Jason doesn’t really have that anymore. And if there is a release valve, it’s Ray. So as we go on in the future I think these two brothers will find a way to help each other.

TVLINE | Things so far have been going smoothly with both Captain Lindell in charge and Vic Lopez on the team. Is either of those situations going to start to get a little prickly, a little unpredictable?
Anytime you have a new commander, you’ve got to get used to the way he wants things run. I think Captain Lindell ultimately is a special operator who just wants things done more efficiently and better. He’s actually a guy after Ray’s own heart. The new guy, Vic, is similar to Ray in that way, and that’s why Ray has taken him under his wing, even more so than Jason, who normally does that.  I think those two characters, Lindell and Vic, will add in a bunch of new colors to the painting that is SEAL Team. It’s going to be very interesting how we all navigate that.

WATCH AN EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK,
THEN READ ON FOR MORE:

TVLINE | Lastly, we just heard the news about SEAL Team cast appearing on a primetime Price Is Right special. Had you ever been on the stage before?
No! And it was a dream come true. You’re looking at it as a kid like, “I’m never going to get there,” and then you’re like, “Oh, God, I’m here. How about that? This is pretty cool.”

TVLINE | What were you most excited to see in person?
The wheel! Everybody wants to get to the wheel, bro. And seeing the audience, which was all [military] veterans…. I’ll tell you, man, I come from a military family, and I really love what CBS has done and is continuing to do, particularly as it pertains to SEAL Team, with how they treat and care about veterans, and how right we try to get the show for the community and even for regular military and bringing in their family, because it’s not just the vets who serve. It’s the families who serve. Just seeing how much they love this show brings us to tears consistently, because it feels right.

It feels like a marginalized part of our society that is just treated sometimes as a tool, and we just want to show that there’s so much more than that. You have these beautiful, bright, amazing people who are the ultimate servants to this country. I’m just really humble to be doing it.

EastEnders spoilers: Ruby Allen and Jay Brown to SPLIT as star teases new romance? https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-ruby-allen-and-jay-brown-to-split-as-star-teases-new-romance/ https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-ruby-allen-and-jay-brown-to-split-as-star-teases-new-romance/#respond Thu, 06 Jun 2019 22:15:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-ruby-allen-and-jay-brown-to-split-as-star-teases-new-romance/

Viewers of EastEnders could see Ruby Allen (played by Louisa Lytton) ditch boyfriend Jay Brown (Jamie Bothwick) and cosy up to a surprise new love interest on the BBC soap.

EastEnders star Louisa confessed that things won’t be plain sailing between her and Jay in upcoming episodes.

“We can’t ever have a smooth running relationship in EastEnders so yeah there will be some ups and downs,” she admitted.

However she did reveal that she enjoys working alongside Jay and if she had the choice, she would love the pair of them to have their happy ending.

She told Metro.co.uk: “I love working with Jamie so it would be lovely if that happened but at the moment I’m not allowed to say.”

Looking to the future, Louisa was asked at the British Soap Awards last week whether there’s another romance on the horizon.

Despite acting coy, she let slip that the first letter of the new love interest’s name was M.

Does this mean Ruby will be breaking Jay’s heart after being won over by Max Branning (Jake Wood)?

Max famously wooed Ruby’s best friend Stacey Fowler (Lacey Turner) over when she was dating his son Bradley Branning (Charlie Clements).

Or could it be Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) or Mitch Baker (Roger Griffith) or perhaps someone with an entirely different name?

EastEnders viewers will have to wait to find out the identity of Ruby’s new romance and whether she’ll choose them over Jay.

Meanwhile, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) may be shut out of his daughter Louise Mitchell’s (Tilly Keeper) life for good after his constant meddling.

Phil tried to convince Louise to terminate her pregnancy by showing her what it’s really like to look after a child.

The worried father asked Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) to take his daughter Lexi to see Louise but she instantly saw through her dad’s eyes.

Acting on behalf of the dodgy dealer, Ben tried to pressure Louise into changing her mind about keeping the baby.

However Louise turned the tables on her brother and slammed him for not being on her side.

Will the pregnant teen walk away from the Mitchells and raise the baby on her own?

Elsewhere in the BBC soap, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) could be in danger as Hunter Owen (Charlie Winter) returns.

At the beginning of the year, Hunter shot his mother’s bigamist husband Ray Kelly (Sean Mahon) and was then shopped to the police by Jack.

Will Hunter take revenge on Jack when he returns?

EastEnders continues Friday at 8pm on BBC One.

Charlie Brown and New ‘Peanuts’ Specials Are Coming to Apple https://briefnews.eu/charlie-brown-and-new-peanuts-specials-are-coming-to-apple/ https://briefnews.eu/charlie-brown-and-new-peanuts-specials-are-coming-to-apple/#respond Sun, 16 Dec 2018 01:44:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charlie-brown-and-new-peanuts-specials-are-coming-to-apple/ new peanuts specials

Fire up the Vince Guaraldi music: new Peanuts specials and series are headed to Apple. Charlie Brown, Snoopy and all the other giant-headed children will be headed to Apple’s upcoming streaming service. New specials include short-form STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) content, featuring Snoopy in space.

According to Deadline, Apple has signed a deal with DHX Media to produce new Peanuts content, including new series, specials and shorts inspired by the comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz back in 1950. In the decades since their funny pages inception, Charlie Brown and the gang have evolved to star in TV specials, movies, and even plays. As recently as 2015, the characters appeared in their own feature film, The Peanuts Movie.

The Peanuts Movie

The new specials will have an educational bent, including “original short-form STEM content that will be exclusive to Apple, featuring astronaut Snoopy.” This is yet another big addition to Apple’s constantly-growing original content. For almost the entire year, news has been trickling in about new original programs intended for Apple’s upcoming streaming service. Titles include The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Reese Witherspoon, and more; a thriller from M. Night Shyamalan; an “innovative drama” from La La Land director Damien Chazelle; Are You Sleeping, with Octavia Spencer as a podcaster who reopens a cold murder case;  Little America, an immigrant-centric show from the writers of The Big Sick; an Amazing Stories reboot, and many more.

Most of the titles announced so far seem to be geared toward adult viewers, but the Peanuts content is clearly going to be more family friendly. Peanuts remains iconic, and the prospect of new material will no doubt appeal to audiences of every age. I have a soft spot for the characters myself. While I can’t say I ever paid much attention to the comic strip when it was running, I was a big fan of two particular Peanuts specials – the Halloween-themed It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and A Charlie Brown Christmas, featuring a killer jazz score from Vince Guaraldi. As far as I’m concerned, no other currently existing Peanuts specials can measure up to these particular titles. Maybe the new Apple content will change that.

The plan – as of now – is for the Apple streaming service to be free for anyone using an Apple device – which is a pretty sweet deal, all things considered. There’s no concrete date yet, but rumor has it the Apple streaming service will launch sometime in 2019.

Murphy Brown Adds Celeb Guest Stars: Bette Midler, Brooke Shields and More https://briefnews.eu/murphy-brown-adds-celeb-guest-stars-bette-midler-brooke-shields-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/murphy-brown-adds-celeb-guest-stars-bette-midler-brooke-shields-and-more/#respond Fri, 19 Oct 2018 10:45:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/murphy-brown-adds-celeb-guest-stars-bette-midler-brooke-shields-and-more/

Murphy Brown is calling in some celebrity reinforcements: The CBS revival has lined up a number of bold-faced names to guest-star later this season, including Bette Midler in a reprise of her Emmy-nominated role on the original series.

Our sister site Deadline reports that Midler will appear in the Nov. 8 episode as Caprice, Murphy’s former secretary who “has a surprising new connection to Murphy” which makes her “even more entitled and unbearable.” Midler earned an Emmy nod in 1998 for her Murphy guest spot as Caprice.

Also, Brooke Shields (Suddenly Susan) will appear in the Nov. 15 episode as Holly Mackin Lynne, an old friend of Corky’s from her beauty-pageant days who finally wakes up after a decade-long coma that made national headlines.

Katie Couric will return to Murphy Brown in the Nov. 8 episode, playing herself. (The veteran newscaster first appeared in a 1992 episode, as a guest at Murphy’s baby shower.) That episode will also feature Emmy winner John Larroquette (Night Court) as Judge Nate Campbell, who’s described as a “kindred spirit” to Murphy.

Finally, Peter Gallagher (The O.C.) will play conservative news anchor John Haggerty, a “notorious manspreader” who works alongside Murphy’s son Avery at the fictional Wolf Network. Gallagher will guest-star in the Nov. 1 episode.

Murphy Brown airs Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c on CBS.

Eden Hazard using Cristiano Ronaldo tactic to get Real Madrid move – Wes Brown EXCLUSIVE https://briefnews.eu/eden-hazard-using-cristiano-ronaldo-tactic-to-get-real-madrid-move-wes-brown-exclusive/ https://briefnews.eu/eden-hazard-using-cristiano-ronaldo-tactic-to-get-real-madrid-move-wes-brown-exclusive/#respond Thu, 18 Oct 2018 09:16:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eden-hazard-using-cristiano-ronaldo-tactic-to-get-real-madrid-move-wes-brown-exclusive/

That is according to Ronaldo’s former team-mate Wes Brown.

Hazard flirted with a transfer from Chelsea to Los Blancos this summer, expressing openness to move to pastures new following the World Cup.

The Blues managed to keep hold of their talisman, however, and the Belgian has started the season brilliantly.

Hazard tops the Premier League goalscoring ranks with seven strikes, along with three assists which have helped Chelsea spar with Liverpool and Manchester City atop the table.

The 27-year-old has recently expressed his desire to play for Real Madrid one day, however, amid talks to sign a new Chelsea contract.

“I don’t want to say: ‘Yes, I am signing a new contract,’ and then in the end I don’t end up signing,” Hazard said last week.

“So I will see. Sometimes in my head, I wake up in the morning and think I want to go. Sometimes I think I want to stay.”

Ronaldo had a similar situation during his time at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese always dreamed of playing in Real Madrid threads, but was persuaded to stay for the 2008/09 season, after which he left for Spain.

His team-mate at the time, Brown, believes many parallels can be drawn between the two stars’ situations.

“You know what, it’s the same situation as Cristiano Ronaldo when he was at United,” Brown told Express Sport.

“Between the lads in the dressing room, [we’d ask him]: ‘Who’s your favourite club?’ And he’d say: ‘I’ve always wanted to play for Real Madrid’.

“[Hazard has] not lied. It’s not like he’s playing rubbish for your club.

“He’s doing the best that he can and it’s just a boyhood dream he’s always had – it was the same with Ronaldo.

“You ask any United player or fan if he disrespected the club, they’d say: ‘Completely not.’ It’s just one of his dreams.”

As for Chelsea’s start to the season under new manager Maurizio Sarri, Brown, who won five Premier League titles at United, has been very impressed.

“Chelsea have started brilliantly – Hazard has come off the back of the World Cup and continued [his great form],” the retired defender continued.

“It would be a shame for him if he did leave, whether it is January or the summer, because it’s a player who would be missed by the Premier League.

“But what an unbelievable player. He’s been the main focus of the team and his ability is fantastic to watch.”
