Ford is brining the Bronco back in 2020. And, as part of its larger mission to take the fight to Jeep directly, the Baby Bronco will compete with Jeep’s smaller offerings, like the Renegade and even, to a lesser degree, the Subaru Crosstrek. But what will it look like? Ford released a dark teaser image when it announced the Baby Bronco, and we put our artist to the task of bringing it into the light.
Blending contemporary Ford styling cues found on other crossovers, like the Escape and EcoSport, with what we saw in the teaser, gives us an idea of what to expect from the Baby Bronco. More rugged aspects, like the front skid plate and recovery hooks, communicate the crossover’s offroad intentions, as do the aggressive tires, body cladding, and short overhangs.
There’s a lot we can gather just from the vehicle’s size, class, and probable competitors. The Renegade is almost certainly what Ford will benchmark for the Baby Bronco, especially because it sits in that sliver of daylight between EcoSport and Escape. And EcoSport, despite the bodycladding, isn’t capable of anything beyond the lightest dirt-road duty. We expect the Baby Bronco, despite being built on a car-like unibody architecture with a transversely-mounted engine, to have the kind of scrambling capabilities to mix it up with the Renegade.
It’d make sense for Ford’s Escape to get larger in its next generation, so size will probably be close to the contemporary Escape. That means it could be similar in size to the current Jeep Compass, while lining up in the market with the slightly smaller Renegade. The EcoBoost 2.0-liter engine recently offered in the Escape is a good fit as at least one of two possible engines. Less likely but still possible is the new three-cylinder that sees duty overseas. This could be a great vehicle to introduce and federalize that “Dragon” I3 with, as it’ll likely sell in enough volume to absorb the costs associated with federalizing it.
While there’s a Trailhawk version of the Renegade, and Ford is quite openly trying to occupy the offroading space, don’t expect to be chasing Wranglers up rocky gullies in the Baby Bronco. We expect a light-duty all-wheel-drive system with some traction and software tricks to do a semblance of legitimate offroading, but nothing like a real low-range transfer case or true locking differentials. That said, the ability to lock the center differential to provide some extra traction by forcing a more balanced front-rear power split is certainly possible. We also expect independent suspension front and rear. The 6-speed automatic used in the Escape is likely to show up in the Baby Bronco, unless Ford develops a transaxle with more gears to slot below its recent 10-speed unit.
We’re using reasoned guesses here as to what the Baby Bronco will look like, based on the market, Ford’s parts inventory, the current lineup, and the competition. Ford might pull a number on us and switch up the target market for the Baby Bronco, adding or removing size or capability. We’ll know more when there’s a production preview concept to look at.
But we think Ford is smart to target the Renegade, which has moved around 8,000 units a month on average over the last year or so. If anything, Ford’s late to the party, which might prompt them to invest in wilder styling or unique features to stimulate interest. We can’t wait to see what the finished product will look like.

After Detroit, we had a few theories about what the Bronco could be. The first, and least exciting, was a rebodied Escape or a cut-down Explorer (or a vehicle built on the next-generation Explorer platform). This would have sacrificed real off-road capabilities, disappointing enthusiasts, and our own Greg Migliore. However, that did not square with some reports about sharing platforms with the Ford Ranger, which at that point had been confirmed for a U.S. return but not yet shown.

So, theory No. 2: A Ranger-based SUV. And guess what? One already exists: the Everest, mainly sold in Asian and South African markets. Based on the T6 Ranger, the biggest issue with the vehicle is (by American standards) bland styling and perhaps too long of a wheelbase to be a real Wrangler competitor. Could Ford cut down the Everest? Probably, but it’d be expensive and the result might not appeal to American tastes. Consider the Pontiac G8 and Chevrolet SS, both Australian-designed to local tastes, and neither hot sellers over here.
The sheet-covered image you see under the sheet and released today with a variety of other Ford news is the third theory: a vehicle directly influenced by the Bronco concept. Boxy, square, and obviously NOT an Everest or Explorer. It’s the purest, most retro design Ford could have applied. What’s underneath and inside is still to be revealed, but given that Ford will produce a totally unique body, a cut-down Ranger chassis seems very likely. That means it has a real shot of taking on the Wrangler in the rough stuff.
We’re excited, and kudos to Ford for seemingly not phoning in the new Bronco.

The Ford Everest SUV may be the next vehicle to receive the Raptor treatment.
–
“There’s no reason [we wouldn’t do an Everest Raptor],” Jamal Hameedi, Ford’s global performance vehicle chief engineer, told Australia’s Drive. A Ford Australia spokesman also told the publication that the idea “makes sense.”
–
The Everest is the SUV counterpart of the Ranger pickup that is currently sold in other world markets, including Australia. However, the Everest is rumored to be making its U.S. debut in 2020 wearing the Bronco nameplate.

Yes, there’s a good chance the new Bronco won’t be a retro-looking two-door SUV but will instead be a wagon-bodied four-door Ranger, reminiscent of the original Ford Explorer. While this may disappoint some Bronco fans, a Raptor-ized version of the forthcoming Bronco could be the balm that heal those wounds.
–
Expect the Everest Raptor to follow in the tread patterns of the recently revealed 2019 Ranger Raptor. Flared fenders, beefy tires, Fox Racing Shox internal-bypass dampers, and a healthy uptick in ride height are sure to be the key elements. While other markets may receive an Everest Raptor with the diesel-powered 211-hp twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, we’d wager that the expected U.S.-spec Ranger Raptor and its potential Bronco Raptor sibling will be motivated by Ford’s gas-sipping twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6, an engine that’s rated at 335 horsepower in the 2019 Ford Edge ST.

Ford is mute on its future plans, so this is all wishful thinking for the time being. But given the mechanical similarities between the Ranger and the Everest, as well as the openness of Ford’s global vehicle performance chief engineer to considering an off-road-ready Everest variant, we’d say the Everest Raptor has a good chance of seeing the light of day, which means we Yanks might be lucky enough to get our hands on a high-performance Bronco Raptor, too.

Ford has confirmed that it’s bringing back the Bronco as a four-door SUV for 2020, but one customizer of vintage trucks thought, “Why wait?” The result is this first-generation Bronco made into a four-door and dubbed the Four Horseman.
–

–
The build is by Maxlider Brothers Customs, a Chicago-area shop that specializes in Broncos. Starting with a ’66 truck, the team, led by brothers Erik and Kris Barnlund, lengthened the chassis by 26 inches. A supercharged 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 from Roush Performance supplies the power—600 horses’ worth; four-wheel disc brakes by Wilwood keep a leash on the big brute. Naturally, the Bronco is four-wheel drive; the axles are from Currie Industries, with Yukon Gear & Axle supplying the driveshafts, differentials, and locking hubs. MJR Industries created the custom suspension, which includes Fox Racing shocks. BFGoodrich 37 x 12.5/20 tires wrap 20-by-12.5-inch gloss-black wheels.

Power-deploying assist steps help passengers climb aboard. The custom-fabricated interior includes three rows of seats, upholstered in marine performance vinyl, while Wetsounds Bluetooth sound bars and subwoofers help supply the tunes.

O.J. Simpson, the man forever associated with the Ford Bronco when he fled police after the slayings of his wife, Nicole, and her friend Ron Goldman, is testifying before a parole board today and could be released as soon as October. (The new Bronco is expected to be released for the 2020 model year. And here’s an item we ran in 2014: The history and the future of the Ford Bronco. Coverage of Simpson’s appearance today appears below.)
CARSON CITY, Nev. – A state parole board in Nevada convened on Thursday morning to consider O.J. Simpson’s bid for freedom after nine years in prison for a botched armed robbery of his own sports memorabilia in a Las Vegas hotel room.
The 70-year-old former football star, known best as the central figure in the so-called Trial of the Century, appeared before the board by live video feed from Lovelock Correctional Center, about 100 miles (161 km) from the parole board’s office in Carson City.
He was joined by supporters including his daughter, sister, and one of his robbery victims.
Simpson told the board what led to the crime, saying he learned his personal mementos were in Las Vegas and “some guys” were trying to “fence my property.”
“As a perfect storm we all ended up in Las Vegas, you know? I was there for a wedding and [a friend] told me that the property was there.”
“I said, ‘Of course I would like to get the property.’ He told me the names of what he thought were the people in the room, and I realized these are friends of mine. You know? Actually guys who helped me move, helped me move and store some of this stuff.”
Simpson said, “When I came into the [hotel] room I noticed spread out everywhere was my personal property.”
“The only thing I saw that was on display that wasn’t mine was some baseballs, and I made it clear to everybody those are not mine. All I want is my property.”
Simpson, 70, whose on-field nickname was “The Juice,” should be an ideal candidate for parole, based on his conduct in prison and other typical factors, according to legal experts. The board’s decision should happen today.
But the four parole board members who will determine his fate may find it hard to avoid memories of the sensational case that captivated the country, when Simpson was charged with killing his wife, Nicole, and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994.
The same board delivered Simpson a favorable parole ruling in 2013 on some of the robbery-related charges, leaving him with four years to go on his minimum sentence. A similar decision this time would clear the way for Simpson to walk out of prison on Oct. 1.
Despite Simpson’s 1995 acquittal in the murder case in Los Angeles, he was later found civilly liable for the deaths and ordered to pay $ 33.5 million in damages to the victims’ families, a judgment that has gone largely unpaid.
Exactly 13 years after his acquittal, Simpson was found guilty of storming into the Las Vegas hotel room with four others to retrieve at gunpoint items that he claimed were rightfully his from two sports collectibles dealers.
Simpson won the Heisman Trophy, the award for the top college football player, in 1968 while attending the University of Southern California. He played more than a decade in the National Football League, becoming the first player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season.
Following his playing career, Simpson became known for his work as a pitchman in television commercials for companies like Hertz and for roles in movies like the comedy “The Naked Gun.”

Our friends at Bronco6G have released a number of new high-resolution Bronco renderings. While we can hope that a two-door version makes it to production, we fully expect the volume seller to be a four-door variant.

Last year and just ahead of the official confirmation that the Ford Bronco was returning in 2020, our friends at Bronco6Greleased a number of high-resolution renderings of the new SUV. While we can hope that a two-door version makes it to production, we fully expect the volume seller to be a four-door variant. Bronco6G once again knocked it out of the park with a new set of four-door Bronco renderings.
The model in these images doesn’t differ that much from what was released earlier this year. Obviously, the biggest difference is the stretched wheelbase and the addition of two doors. The overall styling is that of an SUV version of the F-150. While the front fascia, taillights, and exterior door hinges are all unique, the renderings don’t seem all that far fetched. It’s a handsome thing, and we hope Ford can release something nearly as cool as what we see here.
A new Ford Ranger will debut alongside the Bronco, and we believe the pair will share the same platform. That would make it a mid-size SUV, competing against models like the Jeep Wrangler or Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma pickups. The new model is still a few years off, so we’ll have to wait and see how accurate these renderings turn out to be.
