City moved within one three points of securing Premier League glory on Saturday night as Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling’s goals claimed a 3-1 win over Tottenham.

And they will have been hoping to wrap it up next Sunday when they take on relegation-threatened Swansea, with United having been expected to steam roll bottom-of-the-table West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

United failed to make a breakthrough against the Baggies at Old Trafford though and they counted the cost when Jay Rodriguez nodded a winner in the second half.

United’s defeat meant City had an unnassailable lead at the top of the Premier League and Pep Guardiola’s men have been crowned champions as a result.

The irony of United handing the title to City will not be lost on the Old Trafford or Etihad faithfuls given goings on in the Manchester Derby last week.

City had the opportunity to secure Premier League glory at the Etihad had they beaten United and went 2-0 via Vincent Kompany and Gundogan’s goals.

But they blew that lead in the second half as Paul Pogba bagged twice and Chris Smalling fired a winner to claim an unlikely comeback victory.

West Brom axe Alan Pardew: Baggies confirm caretaker replacement https://briefnews.eu/west-brom-axe-alan-pardew-baggies-confirm-caretaker-replacement/ https://briefnews.eu/west-brom-axe-alan-pardew-baggies-confirm-caretaker-replacement/#respond Mon, 02 Apr 2018 10:38:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/west-brom-axe-alan-pardew-baggies-confirm-caretaker-replacement/

Pardew was appointed as Tony Pulis’ successor in November but has failed to spark a revival in their fortunes.

The Baggies are 10 points from safety and look destined to drop out of the Premier League.

Darren Moore has been placed in charge “until further notice”.

A statement on the club’s website said: “West Bromwich Albion and Alan Pardew have agreed to mutually part company today following discussions between both parties.

“Assistant Head Coach John Carver will also be leaving.

“The Club would like to thank Alan and John for their efforts and wish them well in their future endeavours.

“First-team coach Darren Moore has been placed in charge of first team affairs until further notice.

“The Club will not be making any further comment at this time.”

Cyrille Regis: West Brom and Coventry legend dies aged 59 – tributes from football world https://briefnews.eu/cyrille-regis-west-brom-and-coventry-legend-dies-aged-59-tributes-from-football-world/ https://briefnews.eu/cyrille-regis-west-brom-and-coventry-legend-dies-aged-59-tributes-from-football-world/#respond Mon, 15 Jan 2018 11:26:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cyrille-regis-west-brom-and-coventry-legend-dies-aged-59-tributes-from-football-world/

Regis, who became an icon at West Brom and Coventry during the 1970s and ‘80s, suffered a suspected cardiac arrest.

He was part of a West Brom side that included the iconic black players Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson.

The trio, who became known as ‘The Three Degrees’, paved the way for more black players to break into English football at a time where racism in the game was commonplace.

A statue of ‘The Three Degrees’, called The Celebration, was unveiled in West Bromwich in 2014.

Regis said at the time: “We were part of that first generation of black players in this country and I’m sure that if you ask any second generation player they will tell you they were inspired by Laurie. That’s why the statue will be so important.”

Cyrille Regis has died aged 59

Regis was born in French Guiana in February 1958 but moved to London with his family at the age of five.

He did not come through the youth ranks with a professional club and was instead spotted playing Sunday morning football by the chairman of Surrey non-league club Molesey.

signed him for £5,000 in May 1977 and he made a spectacular start, scoring twice in a League Cup tie against Rotherham in September of that year.

He was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year for 1978.

Regis played for eight seasons at West Brom, where he scored 112 goals in 297 appearances.

He moved to Coventry in 1985 and won the FA Cup three years later.

Regis earned his first of five England caps in 1982, eventually retiring in October 1996 after a stint at Chester City.

He also played for Aston Villa, Wolves and Wycombe.

He was appointed an MBE in 2008 and returned to West Brom as a coach before becoming a football agent.

Bullet in the post

Regis wrote about the day he was when reflecting on his England debut in 1982.

He wrote: “Clearly someone did not approve of my selection because they had cut out individual letters from a newspaper and stuck them on a sheet of paper to spell out a message that read, ‘If you put your foot on our Wembley turf, you’ll get one of these through your knees’.

“I looked into the envelope and there was a cotton-wool pad wrapped round something. I took it out, opened it up and there it was: a bullet staring up at me.

“I have still got it to this day. The letter soon got binned, but I kept the bullet as a reminder of the force of anger and evil some people had inside them back then.

“For the rest of my playing days, it was also a motivation, a reminder that these people were not going to stop me.”

Cyrille Regis tribues

Tributes have flooded in, with former footballer Mark Bright saying on Twitter: “Heavy heart this morning, just heard that Cyrille Regis has passed away age 59. He was more than just a footballer, he blazed a trail for every black player who followed him, an inspiration to myself and many players of my era. A humble man and a great man.”

Ex-Manchester United striker Andrew Cole said: “Devastated this morning my hero my pioneer the man behind the reason I wanted to play football has passed away my heart goes out to all his family RIP Cyrille Regis”

Former Aston Villa midfielder Ian Taylor wrote: “Another icon has left us. Can’t believe it. Absolutely devastated as he was an unbelievable role model and became a good friend. Deepest condolences to all family and friends of a proper legend Cyrille Regis. You’ll be missed my friend.”

Arsenal vs West Brom: Best snaps as Gunners wear red shorts for first time since 1978 https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-vs-west-brom-best-snaps-as-gunners-wear-red-shorts-for-first-time-since-1978/ https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-vs-west-brom-best-snaps-as-gunners-wear-red-shorts-for-first-time-since-1978/#respond Sun, 31 Dec 2017 18:18:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arsenal-vs-west-brom-best-snaps-as-gunners-wear-red-shorts-for-first-time-since-1978/

Arsenal opted to wear red shorts for the first time in 30 years for their away trip to West Brom.

Their usual white shorts would have clashed with the Baggies’ and the Gunners didn’t want to mix their home, away and third kits to accomodate Premier League rules.

Instead, the players were given red shorts for the game, a common occurance in the 1970s to avoid similar clashes.

The shorts won’t be available to buy and aren’t expected to be used again anytime soon.

Take a look through the gallery to reveal the best snaps of Arsenal stars wearing red shorts.

ALAN PARDEW ON ARSENE WENGER

16:10:”I don’t think there are any words I can say to give justice to what he’s achieved in English football,” Pardew said of the Frenchman. “It’s well documented he changed from an era of players perhaps not being as professional as they could have been to a very professional era.

“The thing I think he’s brought to the Premier League is a positivity that his team will gain the upper hand or attempt to take the upper hand. I admire that. As we have seen over the Christmas period, there are a lot of teams who will take the initiative away and be happy not to have it.

“I will say, ‘Well done’ to him before the game and hopefully at the end say, ‘Unlucky’.”

Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan had a very different message to Pardew.

He tweeted: Congratulations to Arsene Wenger on his record-breaking day: longest any manager has ever gone between winning the Premier League and not getting sacked. 13 years and eight months!

GRIM RECORD…

16:05: It is 18 top-flight games since the Baggies last had a win to celebrate and Alan Pardew is still yet to toast three points in six attempts.

STAT OF THE DAY

*West Brom have won their last two home league games against Arsenal, as many as they had in the previous 23 home meetings.

*Arsenal have scored in all 23 of their Premier League games against West Brom.

*Alexis Sanchez has scored three goals in his last four Premier League games against West Brom.

JACK FOR ENGLAND!

16:00: Time for a bit of positive Arsenal news with Arsene Wenger declaring Jack Wilshere’s improving form is making it harder for Gareth Southgate to ignore his credentials for England.

The Arsenal midfielder, 25, has recently impressed after returning to Wenger’s starting XI, and again demonstrated his ability with the fine pass that released Alexis Sanchez to score in Thursday’s 3-2 victory at Crystal Palace.

Southgate had previously expressed concerns that despite his admiration for Wilshere, he could not consider him for selection until he is regularly playing in the central midfield role he believes suits him best.

However, Wenger has seen the way Wilshere’s presence has given his team greater balance and also how he is more disciplined, and he believes such improvements will bring international recognition.

Asked if it had become hard for Southgate to ignore him, the 68-year-old Wenger said: “Of course. Jack has some great qualities, especially when we lose the ball, he’s the first one to put the opposition under pressure. He has really improved the defensive side of his game.”

OZIL…

15:55: I can also see Arsenal supporters freaking out on Twitter because of Mesut Ozil’s absence.

The latest reports suggest a minor knee injury is the reason for him not being in today’s squad – but that hasn’t stopped people suggesting a January move to Manchester United is on the cards.

I repeat, a slight knee injury rules Ozil out of today’s game!

SANCHEZ…

15:50: You knew it was coming. The story of Manchester City’s pursuit of Alexis Sanchez.

City lost two star players in their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace today with Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne suffering injuries.

Asked on BT Sport if the injuries will trigger transfers, he said: ”I am talking about the game. We have to sit down and see what happened with Gabriel and Kevin and we will see.”

I didn’t hear a no…

CONGRATS, ARSENE

15:45: Allow me to say congratulations to Arsene Wenger, who takes charge of his record-breaking 811th match as Arsenal manager.

There’s been high and lows during his 7750-day tenure, but the milestone takes him past Sir Alex Ferguson’s tally of 810 matches in charge of Manchester United.

I think a celebratory GIF is in order. Yep, that’s how we do things in 2017…

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Tom: Why is Mesut Ozil never available when Arsenal have a horrible looking away game against a rather physical side?

Logan: I’m sure Mesut Ozil is having medical right now at Carrington.

Joe: Don’t believe that injury/illness or contract is behind Ozil’s absence today. He’s one of the only players in the Premier League who consistently has a good game against N’Golo Kante. Rested for Wednesday I reckon…

Is that a joke, Joe?

TEAM NEWS – WEST BROM

15:40: And now for the hosts.

Alan Pardew has kept things simple with just one change from the goalless draw with Everton.

Striker Salomon Rondon misses out with injury and Hal Robson-Kanu replaces him.

TEAM NEWS – ARSENAL

15:35: Let’s start with the visitors.

The headline news is that Mesut Ozil hasn’t made the matchday squad, which is bond to have people talking with the January transfer window less than 24 hours away. Alex Iwobi replaces him.

And that’s the only change Arsene Wenger has made from the victory over Crystal Palace earlier this week. Granit Xhaka passes a late fitness test.

AFTERNOON…

15:25: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of West Brom vs Arsenal.

Only Arsenal could lose a match they weren’t playing.

Manchester City drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace at the Hawthorns earlier with Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne sustaining serious injuries.

Injuries that many believe will accelerate Alexis Sanchez’s seemingly inevitable January move to the Etihad.

I’ll get back to that in a moment, but first I’ll hit you with the team news and line-ups from the Hawthorns.

WEST BROM vs ARSENAL – PREVIEW

West Brom’s Nacer Chadli has been ruled out for up to two months after the recurrence of his hip problem.

The forward limped off in the 3-1 defeat to Stoke last weekend and is now unlikely to return until March. Salomon Rondon is a doubt with a hamstring injury.

Arsenal will remain without Olivier Giroud, Nacho Monreal and Aaron Ramsey. Giroud and Monreal are expected to be absent until mid-January, owing to respective hamstring and ankle injuries. Ramsey is also struggling with a hamstring problem.

Last season: West Brom 3 Arsenal 1, Arsenal 1 West Brom 0

Last five league matches: West Brom L D L L D; Arsenal D D W D W

Top scorers: Jose Salomon Rondon (West Brom) 4; Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal) 8, Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) 8

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho on why Romelu Lukaku did not celebrate goal vs West Brom https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho-on-why-romelu-lukaku-did-not-celebrate-goal-vs-west-brom/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho-on-why-romelu-lukaku-did-not-celebrate-goal-vs-west-brom/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 18:05:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho-on-why-romelu-lukaku-did-not-celebrate-goal-vs-west-brom/

And Jose Mourinho has suggested the hitman failed to mark the goal because of the time he spent on loan at the Hawthorns from Chelsea.

Lukaku put United ahead against West Brom today when he nodded past Ben Foster in the 23rd minute.

But, just as when he scored for the Red Devils against Bournemouth in midweek, the Belgian did not celebrate the goal.

Lukaku’s decision to remain po-faced when his team-mates surrounded him drew some criticism from fans and pundits alike.

It has been suggested that the striker is unhappy with recent criticism put to him about his scoring drought.

But Mourinho has offered an explanation as to why the former West Brom loanee might not have wanted to celebrate.

“I didn’t celebrate too,” said the United boss.

“Nobody was happier than me.

“Fifteen years ago I look at myself celebrating goals. With maturity you go into levels that you control your emotions better.

“Romelu was a happy kid at West Brom [during the 2012-13 campaign] – maybe at the back of the mind it was his love for the club.”

United supporters will be hoping Lukaku gets his name on the scoresheet when Mourinho’s men face Bristol City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Next up for United in the Premier League is a trip to the King Power Stadium to face Claude Puel’s Leicester on Saturday.

As for West Brom, Alan Pardew admitted he got his team selection wrong, saying he should have freshened it up after the midweek draw at Liverpool.

“The team I picked in hindsight was not the right team,” he said. “I should have picked some fresh legs in there. I should have maybe made two or three changes.

“We just had a lack of energy and I have to take some blame for that.”

West Brom eye Sam Allardyce as Tony Pulis replacement to save Premier League status https://briefnews.eu/west-brom-eye-sam-allardyce-as-tony-pulis-replacement-to-save-premier-league-status/ https://briefnews.eu/west-brom-eye-sam-allardyce-as-tony-pulis-replacement-to-save-premier-league-status/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 00:29:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/west-brom-eye-sam-allardyce-as-tony-pulis-replacement-to-save-premier-league-status/

West Brom’s ambitious Chinese owners are looking to name someone who can safeguard their £170m summer investment and build for the future and Allardyce, who has been out of work since keeping Crystal Palace in the top flight last season, could be just the man.

The 63-year-old looked set to go to Everton but pulled out of the running because he did not feel their heart was set on him.

Now West Brom, who sacked Tony Pulis yesterday after three years at the helm, are on the lookout for someone with proven Premier League experience.

And Allardyce ticks all the boxes having managed a record six clubs in the top flight – Bolton, Blackburn, Sunderland, Newcastle, Palace and West Ham.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill also emerged as one of the early front runners but he is not thought to be one that appeals to the Hawthorns hierarchy.

While Albion pulled the plug on Pulis just 48 hours after the 4-0 home defeat against Chelsea, there is not a massive list of stand-out candidates.

Former West Ham manager Slaven Bilic and ex-Everton boss Ronald Koeman would be interested but have just lost their jobs for the self-same reason as Pulis got the chop.

Former Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew is also a name who could be in the frame.

Pulis’ assistant Gary Megson will take care of first-team duties until a successor is found.

West Brom have been on a horror run which has seen them get just two wins from the last 21 in the league.

Chinese owner Guochuan Lai was at the Chelsea game and decided it was time to part company with Pulis who is believed to have picked up a £2million golden handshake.

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’s

Southampton vs West Brom LIVE: Express Sport brings you the latest team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’s

91: Yep, Dawson off injured. Tony Pulis has lost two centre-backs today. Not good news for the tactician.

FOUR MINUTES ADDED TIME

88: Precious seconds tick away with Craig Dawson down injured. The Baggies have made all their changes, so could be down to 10.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 WEST BROM – BOUFAL

85: There’s been a goal, this is NOT a drill.

Substitute Sofiane Boufal collects the ball deep inside his own half, strides forward with a couple of dummies and plants it in the bottom corner.

Goal of the Season contender. No doubt.

84: Southampton’s attack has gone up a gear, but so has West Brom’s defence. The Baggies playing with a back five as the home side probe in the final stages.

83: Couple of chances in quick succession. Firstly Van Dijk almost connects with a volley but skews the connection. Nathan Redmond then whips a shot narrowly wide of the post.

Southampton make their final two changes with Boufal and Austin on for Tadic and Long.

80: Just ten minutes left folks. We’ve almost bloody made it!

79: Tony Pulis makes his final change with Matt Phillips replacing Nacer Chadli.

78: Southampton supporters are trying their best to galvanise their side. Lots of noise inside the stadium and it seems to be doing the trick as the Baggies retreat deeper and deeper into their half.

75: Right, we’ve got 15 minutes remaining and it’s still goalless. Is there a winner somewhere? Please say there’s a winner, please!

73: Huge chance! Dusan Tadic should make the breakthrough after collecting the ball with only Foster to beat… Nope. The midfielder shoots straight at the stopper, who stayed big in fairness.

70: Good to see Pellegrino listening to me. Defensive midfielder Oriel Romeu is replaces by forward Nathan Redmond.

69: Surely it’s time for Nathan Redmond and Charlie Austin? Steven Davis and Shane Long are basically passengers now. It’s looking like Tony Pulis is winning the battle of minds with that tactical introduction of Gareth McAuley.

66: What on earth has happened to Fraser Forster?! He’s had two high balls to deal with all match. He missed the first completely, and just dropped the second like it was a bar of soap. Lucky to escape without conceding there.

65: That was his moment. Jay Rodriguez has a golden opportunity to stick it to Southampton after running onto a Rondon knock-down, but scuffs it wide.

When I say wide, I actually mean it hit the corner flag.

62: I don’t want to jinx it, but the game is starting to open up. Tadic skips past a couple of challenges but Gabbiadini can’t find anyone in the area. Serious danger of a contest breaking out…

60: Chance! Kieran Gibbs, who was West Brom’s most advanced player, climbs above Cedric but can’t get any power on the header.

57: Rondon chests a long ball down for Jay Rodriguez, who attempts a shot I’ve never seen before. I was almost like a karate kick lob?

55: Shane Long has a snapshot from distance but Foster is down to collect it easily. Looks like Tony Pulis isn’t content with how dull this game is, so decides to bring Gareth McAuley on for Gareth Barry. 37-year old on for the 36-year-old to freshen things up…

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’sGETTY

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’s

51: God this game needs a goal. West Brom are showing absolutely no ambition to win this. Just absorbing pressure and punting it long. Gabbiadini wins a rare header but he’s turned it onto the roof of the net.

48: West Brom attempt to hit Southampton on the break but it’s Gareth Barry and Rondon who surge forward… it was quickly snuffed out. Obviously.

45: We’re back underway at St Mary’s. No changes for either side.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Mark: Generally better from Southampton. Just need an earlier delivery into the box and an early second half goal to open the game up.

Justin: How Southampton are not out of sight here is anyone’s guess. So many chances created but not taken against the Baggies set up for a 0-0 so far.

Bella: Lucky scarf getting first airing of season and looking as likely as Shane Long to have immediate impact for Southampton.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 WEST BROM

HT: After two uneventful minutes of added time, referee Graham Scott shows some mercy by blowing for half-time. Absolutely abysmal game of football.

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’sGETTY

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’s

TWO MINUTES ADDED TIME

44: Good play from Southampton with Shane Long teeing up Dusan Tadic, who delays his shot for an eternity before winning a corner.

The resulting set-piece draws a cracking save from Ben Foster, who parries away Miya Yoshida’s header.

Oh, and now he’s just attempted an overhead kick, which didn’t end well. Shinnnnnnnerrrrrrrr.

41: Pass, pass, pass… interception. Repeat for 38 minutes and that’s you pretty much updated. Just the one three decent chances to speak of with Tadic and Romeu being wasteful, and Bertrand rattling the crossbar. It’s just so congested in the middle of the park that nobody can create anything. Weather isn’t helping either.

38: Can anyone tell me why West Brom have been on television twice in six days? Not easy on the eye.

35: Lovely counter from Saints. Gabbiadini shrugs off Hegazi before releasing the ball to Long, who can’t adjust his body to tuck it under Foster.

31: Big blow for Tony Pulis as Jonny Evans is forced off with a back injury. Nasty fall from distance. He’s replaced by Allan Nyom. Craig Dawson will probably move to centre-back.

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’sGETTY

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’s

30: Not a game you’d like to be attending. If the wind caused by Storm Bryan Adams wasn’t bad enough, it’s absolutely pelting it down. Nacer Chadli can’t recreate Monday’s heroics when hitting a free-kick straight into the wall.

28: Virgil van Dijk hits one, and it stays hit. He comes forward from the back, and decides to let rip with no other options on. Just over.

25: Southampton win a couple of corners on the spin, and should arguably take the lead. The Baggies fail to clear the delivery but Romeu can’t prod it home from point-blank range.

23: Vintage Tadic. The midfielder receives a great pass from Davis inside the penalty area, but tamely strikes it straight at Foster. Never been the most clinical of players.

20: Danger! Southampton have themselves a free-kick just outside the area.

Ryan Bertrand steps up… Woodwork! The full-back’s shot skimmed off the head of Jonny Evans, and bounces off the post and away to safety.

I think that was heading for the corner if that pesky former Manchester United centre-back didn’t get a touch.

Southampton vs West Brom: LIVE team news, updates and analysis from St Mary’s

17: Charlie Austin and Nathan Redmond are clearly discussing why on earth they’re not on the pitch. Not sure what Charlie Austin has to do to get a start these days. Shane Long hasn’t scored in 25 games…

13: I’m supposed to update you regularly, but honestly, it’s pretty difficult when nothing is happening. Lemina shoots from the better part of 35-yards, and it flies over.

10: Neither side have been able to get a grip on the match. West Brom are tidy at the back, as you already knew, while Southampton can’t carve them open.

6: Gareth Barry has a crack from distance, but it nestles into the side netting. Even the shot looked 36-years-old there. Almost like slow motion.

Miya Yoshida nods Davis’ corner wide.

3: Martin Keown, who’s co-commentating on BT Sport tonight, manfully attempts to build excitement by mentioning that Jay Rodriguez is against his former club, but he’s not fooling anyone.

The Saints are seeing all the ball in the opening stages, but nothing to worry Ben Foster.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 WEST BROM

1: Right, I suppose we should get this thing started. Expectations are low, but maybe we’ll get a nice surprise. That wasn’t the most encouraging start to a blog now was it?!

Gary: Why drop Nathan Redmond, who has pace and has created the most chances for us, for the past-it Davis?!

Rob: Not a clue what Austin, Boufal and Hoedt have to do to start a game. If Forster makes another mistake today I’ll flip!

GABBI NEEDS HELP

17:25: Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini cannot be expected to do all the work if the team are to get back to winning ways against West Brom, according to manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Funny that, I didn’t realise he was carrying such a burden on his shoulders.

“The offensive jobs are the responsibility for all of us because sometimes he is doing a lot of diagonal runs in behind with a lot of movement, but if we do not pass properly then it will be difficult for the striker,” Pellegrino said.

EVENING

17:15: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Southampton vs West Brom from St Mary’s Stadium.

We’ve already seen the surprise of the century with Huddersfield beating Manchester United 2-1, so it’ll be a stiff task for anything to top that on the South Coast this evening.

However, I’m always open to surprises. And who knows, maybe Tony Pulis’ side WON’T score from a set-piece…

Let’s get started!

West Brom hope either Ben Foster or Boaz Myhill will be fit to keep goal – Foster (knee) missed the Leicester game and Myhill finished it with hamstring trouble.

Boro reject West Brom bid for Ben Gibson: Tottenham target only available to top-six clubs https://briefnews.eu/boro-reject-west-brom-bid-for-ben-gibson-tottenham-target-only-available-to-top-six-clubs/ https://briefnews.eu/boro-reject-west-brom-bid-for-ben-gibson-tottenham-target-only-available-to-top-six-clubs/#respond Mon, 24 Jul 2017 09:43:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boro-reject-west-brom-bid-for-ben-gibson-tottenham-target-only-available-to-top-six-clubs/

Gibson has been on the transfer lists of a number of clubs for months.

West Brom are said to have lodged an £18million offer for the player, with £3m in add-ons.

But Boro have refused the Baggies’ club-record offer and are instead seeking a buyer from higher up the Premier League table.

That is according to the Yorkshire Post, who claim Tottenham are also in for the player.

According to the report, West Brom will have to increase their offer for Gibson to get the Boro board to the negotiating table.

Boro see themselves as promotion favourites in the Championship this season and don’t want to sell their top defender to a team who may be battling against them in the lower half of the table next term.

Yet a move to Spurs is not straightforward for the 24-year-old either.

The Yorkshire Post claim that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will only bid for Gibson if Kevin Wimmer leaves the club.

A fortnight ago Wimmer, 24, said he wanted to quit the north London outfit in search of more game time.

“We will definitely look around. It’s the right time to look for a place where the chance to get regular playing time is higher,” he said.

But with few clubs willing to meet Tottenham’s asking price it appears as though the Austrian may stay this summer, casting a move for Gibson into doubt.
