Florida officials and agencies used several tactics to lure migrants on a chartered flight to Martha's Vineyard, including making a fake brochure that purports refugee benefits, according to a class-action lawsuit.

On September 14, 50 migrants, most of whom were from Venezuela, were flown in two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of a political stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to criticize border policies under the Biden administration.

Now, a group of those migrants is taking action against DeSantis and other state officials and agencies in a class-action lawsuit filed on Tuesday. Lawyers representing the migrants accused DeSantis and Florida officials of plotting an "illegal scheme" to "defraud vulnerable immigrants to advance a political motive."

Part of that "scheme," according to the lawsuit, was to make "false promises and false representations" of potential employment and housing, among other benefits, upon arriving on Martha's Vineyard.

For example, just before they arrived on the island, migrants were given a "shiny, red folder" filled with "official-looking materials," including a brochure titled "Massachusetts Refugee Benefits."

The brochure contained misleading information on resettlement aid that, in reality, was not available for migrants seeking asylum in Massachusetts, as previously reported by Insider.

The lawsuit goes further by accusing DeSantis and other officials of fabricating the leaflet entirely.

"On information and belief, the brochure was manufactured by Defendants," the lawsuit read, adding that it "echoed the type of false representation" that migrants were given by word-of-mouth, such as assistance with housing, food, and employment in the first 90 days upon arrival in Massachusetts.

According to the lawsuit, the brochure also took language from an existing state program, the Massachusetts Refugee Resettlement Program, which none of the migrants were eligible for.

"This brochure was not prepared by the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants, or any other Massachusetts agency or immigration services organization," the lawsuit stated.

A representative from the state's Office for Refugees and Immigrants did not immediately respond to request for comment.

The fascinating five-page booklet was produced exclusively for first-class passengers.

The front cover is dominated by a picture of the awe-inspiring liner dwarfing other vessels.

Inside, one page is devoted to the Louis XVI Restaurant where a la carte meals were served till 11pm, while another showcases the Cafe Parisien, setting of choice for late-night card games.

The upmarket restaurant reception, with its pillars and mahogany tables, was designated for afternoon tea, while well-to-do travellers could unwind in the lavish Turkish bath room which “rivals anything similar to be found in London, Paris or New York”.

Just 325 first-class passengers were able to make the most of these opulent surroundings out of the 2,208 passengers on board.

The brochure is being sold for an estimated £8,000 along with an equally scarce ticket for the launch of the Titanic in Belfast on May 31, 1911 – 11 months before it hit an iceberg and sank with the loss of 1,522 lives.

There were just 705 survivors.

The VIP ticket is tipped to sell for £25,000.

The items are being auctioned on Saturday week in Devizes, Wiltshire.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: “Both the brochure and ticket are exceptionally rare.”

Of the ticket, he said it was only one of a handful to have survived with its stub.

He added: “It is a truly exceptional piece of Titanic and Belfast history.”

A Swedish leaflet about child marriage has been withdrawn after it sparked outrage. The document outlines the illegality of underage marriage in Sweden, but many assumed it was condoning it instead.

The brochure was produced by Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) and aimed at people arriving in the country. Entitled, ‘Information for those married to a child,’ the document explains that child marriage is illegal in Sweden and the reasons why. It goes on to say that any child who arrives with a spouse will be treated as a lone child and placed in social care.

The brochure also points out that sex with anyone under the age of 15 is also illegal in Sweden. However, Swedish politicians and residents took issue with the language used in the brochure, saying it wasn’t strong enough for the subject matter.

Jan Björklund, the leader of the Liberal Party, tweeted that the brochure should be “withdrawn without delay.”

“The biggest failing is that the word ‘prison’ isn’t present, but rather it gives a bit of advice and tips on how to respond if you have a relationship our marriage laws forbid,” Tobias Billstrom, the leader of the Moderate Party, said, as cited by the Local.

“The material has provoked strong reactions and many comments. We have withdrawn the material and will revise it,” Petra Rinman of Socialstyrelsen said in a statement, which explained the brochure was compiled as part of a government framework to disseminate information to children who are declared married, as well as spouses and family members.

Many expressed their anger over the leaflet on social media, where many appeared to think the brochure was encouraging child marriage or that it was a sign that Sweden was legalizing child marriage.

“Sweden does not allow anyone under the age of 18 to enter into marriage in the country,” Socialstyrelsen’s legal head Pär Ödman said. “However, according to current legislation, the general rule is that marriage which is legal according to the law of the country in which it was carried out should be recognized in Sweden. New legislation is currently being prepared by the government.”

The new legislation will state that foreign childhood marriage will not be recognized if one of the parties was underage when they arrived in Sweden. It will come into effect at the start of 2019.

We have been posting sketches and teaser images of the upcoming Kia K900 sedan, but photos of the real thing are already available in South Korea. Some presentation slides of the car, wearing the name “K9” (that’s what it’s called over there), have made it online on a Korean motoring site, as well as this “Job #1” style photo taken at a manufacturing facility.

The restrained appearance conveyed in the sketches is present in the final car. There’s still something German about it, with detail choices reflecting current BMW and Mercedes offerings: The front grille is certainly about as big as BMW 7-series‘ kidneys these days. The lights’ LED accents are clearly visible in all photos.

Fitting the car with real-life wheels definitely makes it lose something striking that the sketches had, but that is the case with all concept design sketches. The interior ambience depicted in the penned sketch has translated well to the photograph-like render: it will be interesting to see how the promised mood lighting modes will affect the interior.

Kia announced that the car will be shown officially at the New York International Auto Show, but the date on the slideshow already promises something, perhaps local, for tomorrow.
