Julie played rape victim Trish Waterman in the final series of Broadchurch and believes television dramas are an appropriate medium for exploring sexual violence.

According to figures, there are 85,000 rapes of adult women in England and Wales every year, 12,000 adult male rapes, and nearly half a million reported sexual assaults.

Julie told Radio Times: “As Liar concludes this week, once again the debate rages over whether TV is an appropriate arena to explore the area of sexual violence, and whether or not rape should be used as a form of entertainment. I would say, emphatically, yes.

“When I was offered the role of Trish Winterman in the third series of Broadchurch, and when I learned what the central storyline was going to be, I was wary.

“The makers of Liar had, like the makers of Broadchurch, clearly worked closely with the police, Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and Independent Sexual Violence Advisors to ensure they portrayed these procedures responsibly and sensitively.”

She continued: “But the programme makers also encouraged us to take a long hard look at society’s reluctance to believe that women, and it is overwhelming women, are being raped and assaulted in terrifying numbers daily. Often by men they know.”

Julie went on to add that only around six per cent of rape trials secure a conviction due to “years of hostile treatment by the police and in court” that has left victims reluctant to press charges and put themselves through intense levels of scrutiny.

She added: “Television at its best should be a mirror that we hold up to see ourselves, see where we’re at as a society. Criticising Liar for using rape in its plot misses the point that some viewers of Liar were still questioning Laura’s version of events even after having watched her, deeply traumatised, being examined in a SARC.

“Those viewers just couldn’t believe that nice surgeon Andrew Earlham could have done it.

“But in revealing that Earlham was a serial rapist mid-series, the show turned from a whodunnit into something more important, and sparked, I’m sure, a thousand conversations around these issues, and our own expectations and beliefs. Which, for me, is what TV drama should do.”

The full interview is available in the latest issue of Radio Times which is available now.

Liar concludes next Monday on at 9pm.

Broadchurch wrapped its third and final season this Wednesday on BBC America, a full four months after the series did so “across the pond.” Were you, the Stateside viewer, able to avoid spoilers for the Axehampton rape case resolution?

Leading up to and with its final hour, the UK drama dangled a few more red herrings before us — by identifying cab driver Clive’s DNA on the football sock, having Ed find and clumsily contaminate the blood-stained twine used to restrain Trish, detailing Jim’s dicking around on the very night of his wife’s birthday fete and casting side-eye at Ian’s use of spyware to “spend time with” his estranged missus.

Clive in fact was next to get brought in for questioning, due to the aforementioned DNA discovery. Traffic cam footage meanwhile revealed the planter of the blood-stained evidence outside Ed’s shop to be Leo Humphries aka Twine Boy. Clive proceeded to blow his previous alibi and admit to how he picked up Leo — and his frazzled son, Michael Lucas — late the night of the party.

Pressed not terribly hard by Miller and Hardy, Leo almost matter-of-factly revealed how some time ago he befriended Michael and arranged for his own girlfriend to be his football mate’s “first.” Leo, though, took his mentoring of the lad to a dark, dark extreme, bringing him to Cath’s party where Leo eyeballed the guest of honor but ultimately singled out Trish, who was alone outside after her row with Ian, for a brutal assault using his “party kit.”

How a drunk, distraught and hugely unwilling Michael was able to follow through on his new friend’s orders to rape Trish, I do not know. Nor do I care to know. (In the larger scheme of things, Broadchurch perhaps wanted to make clear that the motivation to rape is seldom anything as banal as unrequited love or revenge, but instead is purely about power exacted through violence.) With the truth now out, Clive beseeched Hardy and Miller to arrest him versus his impressionable stepson, seemingly to no avail.

Elsewhere as the series drew to an end, Thirteen Beth and Mark agreed to separate, in the wake of his near-suicidal quest for closure over Danny’s murder; Daisy commended her father for his handling of the case that rocked yet unified their small town (as well as for policing her own harassment); Trish seemed poised to let Ian ease back into her life; and Maggie followed up her resignation from the newspaper and its clickbait-y site to start up her own YouTube news vlog.

What did you think of Broadchurch‘s final hour, and Season 3 as a whole? Grade each in the polls below.

Lenny Henry weight loss – how hotel ad and Broadchurch actor slimmed after Dawn French https://briefnews.eu/lenny-henry-weight-loss-how-hotel-ad-and-broadchurch-actor-slimmed-after-dawn-french/ https://briefnews.eu/lenny-henry-weight-loss-how-hotel-ad-and-broadchurch-actor-slimmed-after-dawn-french/#respond Wed, 10 May 2017 21:45:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lenny-henry-weight-loss-how-hotel-ad-and-broadchurch-actor-slimmed-after-dawn-french/

Appearing recently at the after party for the play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Lenny looked incredibly svelte in a khaki suede jacket, a navy t-shirt and black jeans.

The star’s familiarly cheerful face looked much slimmer, as he donned a moustache.

While the actor shocked with his slender frame at the event on May 2, Lenny has been gradually losing weight for the past few years.

In 2011 the star lost a whopping three stone after splitting with his wife Dawn French.

After 25 years together the pair split, making the official announcement in 2010.

The pair have a daugher Billie, born in 1991, who they adopted together.

Only a year after the split Lenny debuted his considerable weight loss.

He appeared in The Comedy Of Errors at  London’s National Theatre in 2011, at the time aged 53, showing of his slimmer frame to the public.

At the time Lenny claimed that the weight loss was down to preparation for the play.

According to the Daily Mail the whole cast were put on a strict workout regimen of dance, yoga, Pilates and military exercises for four hours a day.

Around a similar time Dawn French also shocked with her drastic weight loss.

She once tipped the scales at 19 stone, but has lost a whopping seven and a half stone.

The star eventually confessed it was a cancer scare that motivated her. French had to lose weight to have a hysterectomy with keyhole surgery.

And three years later, in January 2014, Lenny also revealed health issues were behind his weight loss. He told The Daily Mirror that he was diagnosed with diabetes, and so took up yoga and changed his diet.

The funnyman had an extra level of motivation, as his mother lost her legs to diabetes. His mother Winifred’s legs were amputated before she died in 1988.

Speaking of his weight loss method he said: “I’ve lost between two-and-a-half and three stone, I was big.

“You’ve got to eat no sugar and drink hardly any alcohol… all the stuff you like. You can’t Hobnob your way through the day.”

He also revealed that regular classes in Ashtanga yoga helped him to slim.

Broadchurch season 3: Deleted scene reveals how Alec Hardy’s Tinder date REALLY ended https://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-season-3-deleted-scene-reveals-how-alec-hardys-tinder-date-really-ended/ https://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-season-3-deleted-scene-reveals-how-alec-hardys-tinder-date-really-ended/#respond Thu, 20 Apr 2017 02:16:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-season-3-deleted-scene-reveals-how-alec-hardys-tinder-date-really-ended/

Viewers will remember Alec (played by David Tennant) was set up by his daughter in episode four, who created a dating profile for him.

In the clip, the detective is seen walking Zoe (Elen Rhys) home after an awkward dinner at a restaurant.

Their conversation quickly turns to the rape case as Zoe says she doesn’t feel safe alone after what happened to Trish Winterman (Julie Hesmondhalgh).

When she says that Alec “obviously” isn’t the rapist, he awkwardly interjects, saying: “You don’t know that. You don’t know that I am who I say I am just from an app. I could be anyone.

“I mean I am, I’m completely who I say I am but you can’t be sure, you can’t be sure I’m that guy. You do need to be careful.”

As they arrive at the door, Alec abruptly tells her not to invite him in “given what’s going on”.

Despite telling him not to be “weird”, the Broadchurch resident agrees to see Alec for a second date, suggesting romance was still on the cards.

With the case concluded at the end of episode eight, presumably the Scottish police man will have more time to devote to his love life.

Meanwhile, fans were left on the edge of their seats as the identity of the rapist was revealed in the last ever instalment of the ITV series.

Schoolboy Michael Lucas (Deon Lee-Williams) was actually the man who attacked Trish, having been groomed by serial rapist Leo Humphries (Chris Mason) to commit the shocking crime.

Leo knocked Trish unconscious at the party in Axehampton and then forced Michael to have sex with her as he filmed it on his mobile phone.

The ITV programme had fans on the edge of their seats as they finally found out who raped Trish Winterman.

During the intense finale, DI Alec Hardy (played by David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) had three potential suspects; Clive Lucas (Sebastian Armesto), Ed Burnett (Lenny Henry) and Jim Atwood (Mark Bazeley).

But many fans were shocked to discover it was Clive’s step son Michael Lucas (Deon Lee-Williams) who attacked Trish (Julie Hesmondhalgh).

He confessed to the detectives that Leo Humphries (Chris Mason) helped him to commit the crime.

Viewers were gripped by the whodunnit storyline but were left in tears as many came to the realisation that it was the last episode of Broadchurch.

One person wrote on Twitter: “@BroadchurchTV I am in pieces and smiling through my tears! How dare you make such exquisite drama #broadchurch.”

“Loved #broadchurch tonight don’t know why they’re not making anymore. It’s the best show on British T.V at the moment love #HardyAndMiller,” praised a fan.

A third exclaimed: “NO NO #broadchurch cannot be over, bring it back this instant!”

“I can feel the tears flowing already, its just dawned on me that this is actually the end, #broadchurch is actually over,” another sad viewer wrote.

“Goodbye #Broadchurch. You were one of my all time favourite TV programmes,” one person added.

The eight-week saga concluded with flashbacks showing how Leo groomed Michael to become a rapist.

During the episode, Clive wanted to save his son and begged DS Miller and DI Hardy for him to go down for the crime instead.

But it was also revealed that Leo had previously raped two other women through footage found on his phone.

Warning: The following article contains spoilers from episode six of Broadchurch.

As the latest instalment opened, DI Alec Hardy (played by David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) had three potential suspects; Clive Lucas (Sebastian Armesto), Ed Burnett (Lenny Henry) and Jim Atwood (Mark Bazeley).

But viewers were left shocked when it was revealed that it was actually Clive’s step son who was the perpetrator behind the horrifying attack.

Michael Lucas (Deon Lee-Williams) was actually the man who attacked Trish (Julie Hesmondhalgh) and had worked alongside Leo Humphries (Chris Mason) to commit the shocking crime.

He confessed to DS Miller and DI Hardy that Leo had helped him to lose his virginity before he convinced him to crash the party at Axehampton.

Leo knocked Trish unconscious and then forced Michael to have sex with her as he filmed it on his mobile phone.

Clive begged DS Miller and DI Hardy to say that he was the perpetrator and save his step-son Michael from having to deal with the consequences of his actions.

It was later revealed that Leo had raped Laura Benson and another woman prior to the attack on Trish.

Those tuning in at home were left shocked and took to Twitter to express their disgust that Michael had been the one to assault Trish.

One viewer tweeted: “#Broadchurch well that was hard watching.”

Another added: “#Broadchurch Did not see that coming!”

“Wow. That is truly messed up!! I knew there’d be more than one person involved! #broadchurch,” a third shared.

Someone else continued: “Always knew Leo was a bad influence! He made Micheal rape her #Broadchurch.”

A fifth wrote: “Micheal raped Trish but Leo abused him & forced him to do it. What an awful sick twist to the tale #Broadchurch.”

Broadchurch season 3: Chris Chibnall dishes dirt on show's ending ahead of shock finale https://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-season-3-chris-chibnall-dishes-dirt-on-shows-ending-ahead-of-shock-finale/ https://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-season-3-chris-chibnall-dishes-dirt-on-shows-ending-ahead-of-shock-finale/#respond Mon, 17 Apr 2017 09:37:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-season-3-chris-chibnall-dishes-dirt-on-shows-ending-ahead-of-shock-finale/

Appearing on the ITV morning show to discuss the conclusion of Broadchurch, Chris remained tight-lipped on the identity of Trish’s (played by Julie Hesmondhalgh) rapist, but did drop some tantalising hints about what fans can expect from tonight’s much-anticipated final.

When asked if there would be any possibility of the popular mystery series returning, Chris said: “I think this is the end of the story tonight.

“I hope it’s a really satisfying end. There’s lots going on and a lot to wrap up in just one hour, so I hope it’s a satisfying ending,” he continued.

Chris also revealed that he knew who Trish’s rapist was from almost the very beginning.

He explained: “I wrote the first draft of episode one, and I thought it was somebody and then as I went on, I realised it was someone else.

“After episode one’s second draft it was always the same person,” he went on.

Viewers have been speculating about how the show will conclude and bets have been on for who will be the one behind the rape.

Mark Bazeley, who plays dodgy mechanic Jim Atwood, teased that it could be more than one person involved in the heinous crime.

Speaking to Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes on This Morning, Mark hinted: “I think the person or persons who have done the deed are forewarned, simply because of the nature of the show.

“It’s about how it’s going to be received as an actor being known for that role,” he added.

There are several other names in the long list of suspects, including taxi driver Clive Lucan (Sebastian Armesto), Trish’s ex Ian Winterman (Charlie Higson), convicted sex offender Aaron Hayford (Jim Howick), fishing shop owner Leo Humpries (Chris Mason) and Trish’s boss Ed Burnett (Sir Lenny Henry).

Broadchurch concludes tonight on ITV at 9pm.

Detectives Ellie Miller and Alec Hardy, played by Olivia Colman and David Tennant, uncover the identity of a rapist who attacked local Trish Winterman, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh.

This will be the the show’s very final episode.

Viewers have said they are heartbroken programme makers have said this will be the last series.

Writer Chris Chibnall admitted that writing the conclusion made him weep and that secrecy surrounding the name of the attacker means that only a handful of people know who it is.

Chris said: “Sitting down to write the final episode was very emotional. Hopefully there are some surprises. I think there is a sense of completion.”

To ensure that the identity of the rapist is not leaked or hinted at Chris did not even let the key cast members know who it is.

He said: “There was an early conversation with the guilty party but David and Olivia didn’t know and neither did Julie. It was basically me, the executive producer, the producer, and the director.”

For the past seven episodes – the first five averaged more than 10 million viewers – detectives Miller and Hardy have been investigating the attack.

The main suspects have included Trish’s ex, Ian Winterman, played by Charlie Higson, her best friend’s husband, Jim Atwood, played by Mark Bazeley, her boss, Sir Lenny Henry’s character Ed Burnett, and local cabbie Clive Lucas played by Sebastian Armesto.

While fans are eager to find out who the criminal is, they are also disappointed that Broadchurch will not return for a fourth series.

One viewer wrote on Twitter: “I can’t believe that Broadchurch finishes for good tomorrow.”

Another was “gutted there are no plans currently to make another series”.

As well as leaving viewers on tenterhooks and boosting ratings, Broadchurch has also led to a tourism surge in one of the towns where it was filmed.

West Bay on the Dorset coast has seen visitor numbers rocket in the past four years since the drama began and the Visit Dorset website reported a 133 per cent increase in inquiries.

Simon Holland, owner of Washingpool Farm Shop – which appears as Flintcombe Farm Shop in the series – has had to expand the seating area in his cafe to cope with the influx of visitors and put up an “As Seen In Broadchurch” sign for fans wanting to take pictures.

Broadchurch will be broadcast on ITV tonight at 9pm

Broadchurch finale holds surprises and heartache says writer https://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-finale-holds-surprises-and-heartache-says-writer/ https://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-finale-holds-surprises-and-heartache-says-writer/#respond Sun, 16 Apr 2017 02:46:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/broadchurch-finale-holds-surprises-and-heartache-says-writer/

The third and final series draws to a close tomorrow on Easter Monday when viewers hope to learn who raped Trish Winterman.

The show’s writer Chris Chibnall said the conclusion will have “some surprises”, and added that he hoped it would also be “satisfying”.

“Sitting down to write the final episode was very emotional and I admit I actually had a bit of a weep doing it,” he said.

“There is pressure with every script, but I am really proud of the final episode.”

For the past eight weeks viewers have watched police duo Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) and Alec Hardy (David Tennant) trying to whittle down the list of suspects after the attack on Trish (former Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh).

The reveal of the “whodunnit” has been so closely guarded that not even Chibnall’s family know the identity of Trish’s rapist.

The show’s two leading stars Colman and Tennant – also weren’t told who it was until they saw the script for the final episode.

Chibnall revealed: “There was an early conversation with the guilty party, but David and Olivia didn’t know and neither did Julie.”

Earlier this week, Mark Bazeley, who plays love cheat Jim Atwood, said he thought that only the actor playing the villain was told in advance who the guilty partner was.

Bazeley said that he had played Bob Simms in Home Fires, a villain who physically and emotionally dominates his wife.

This had led to comment outside the show, he revealed. Asked if people had hated him because of the character, he said: “Yes. It was tough collecting my kids for a while at the school playground, as you can imagine and, obviously, now with Broadchurch the suspicion lies there again.”

Other suspects in the frame include Sir Lenny Henry, who plays Ed Burnett, Trish’s old boss, and also her estranged husband Ian played by Charlie Higson.

● The finale is on tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.
