Ms McGovern became a famous face for the BBC. Having daily spots on its flagship breakfast show, the broadcaster was able to increase her public profile through the corporation.

She slowly rose through the ranks, becoming the main businesses presenter for Breakfast.

Often, Ms McGovern would host the entire show.

Her rise to the top was a remarkable story, given she started as an intern on the Tomorrow’s World programme before securing part-time work as a current affairs researcher.

Many serenaded Ms McGovern with messages of congratulation after she announced she and her girlfriend were expecting their first child.

She eventually gave birth to a baby girl in November 2019.

She was, however, an outspoken critic of the BBC’s gender pay gap row, in which the corporation’s data revealed men earned disproportionately more for the same jobs.

Shortly after receiving a salary boost in the aftermath of the row which saw her pay-packet increase to a six-figure salary, Ms McGovern again spoke out about her pay, or what she saw as a lack thereof.

She complained to The Sunday Times that her fellow “posh” broadcasters earned more than her.

“But what the BBC doesn’t do enough of is thinking about getting people from more working-class backgrounds.

“It’s just posh.”

The Middlesbrough-born presenter said “a lot of people in management are from the same background”.

“We’re talking about: ‘How do we represent more working class people?’ when they themselves are not working class.

“So how do they know?”

She went on to tell of an encounter with a manager who told her she was “too common” to be a BBC presenter.

Ms McGovern, seeing the media storm she had caused by doing the interview, quickly made an attempt to clarify what she meant.

The day after the piece was published, she posted a tweet that read: “I was asked to do an interview with the education editor at the Sunday Times about my work with Young Enterprise; a charity helping young people learn about business which I have been heavily involved with for many years.

“Towards the end of the interview I was asked about BBC pay and culture. I said I thought that the issue wasn’t just about gender, but also about class.

“I also said that we talk a lot in the BBC about how to be better at ethnic diversity, which is important because we’re not good enough at it. However we never talk about class and I suggested that if we did it would make us more diverse in lots of ways, including ethnicity.

“I am in a very fortunate position; I love my job and never dreamed I would have such an amazing career and salary. I grew up in Middlesbrough, a town that is often portrayed in a negative light, but one I love.

“I want the people I grew up with and everyone from a place deemed as ‘poor’ to know that they should never be held back from achieving the best in life and they should be proud of where they’re from. That’s it.”

Ms McGovern left the BBC in October 2019 and now presents ‘The Steph Show’ on Channel 4’.

Legendary college football broadcaster Keith Jackson, whose career spanned six decades, died on Friday at the age of 89, ESPN reports. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Jackson got his start in radio, calling Washington State games in 1952. He made the leap to national broadcasting in 1966 when ABC Sports acquired the rights to NCAA Football, and went on to become the first play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football in 1970.

Though initially set to retire after the 1998 season, Jackson returned the following year and stayed on with ABC Sports through the 2006 Rose Bowl. He was known for his colorful expressions, most famously “Whoa, Nellie!”

In addition to college football, Jackson’s broadcasting career included NFL and NBA games, 11 World Series, 10 Winter and Summer Olympics and auto racing. He was inducted into the American Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 1994.

Reggie had arranged a book signing for me at the shop, which was owned by Bernard Stone, who Reggie knew well because he often went there for his books.

As you can imagine it was funny walking in there for the first time and seeing a waxwork of Sigmund Freud in his tweed jacket. It was a signing for my second novel, Chasing The Dragon, set in Hong Kong and the South China Sea where a large shipment of class A drugs is due to be intercepted by the CIA. 

I met Reggie at the ITN offices in London in the early 60s and became good friends with him. We had different diplomatic and correspondent roles there and by the time News At Ten began in 1967 Reggie had become one of its first presenters.  

It was about a year after News At Ten began that our editor, Nigel Ryan, asked me to join the presenting team.

I wasn’t keen on being studio based as I’d been out in the field for so long, but I soon got used to live news presenting.

 I got told things in my ear, which wasn’t easy at first and the thought this huge audience was watching could make you nervous.

But you quickly forgot that. We also got recognised by the public and that was part and parcel of presenting on television.

I did News At Ten with Reggie, while at the same time I returned as a foreign correspondent reporting from Africa, the Middle East and later Afghanistan in the 1980s. 

News At Ten was a big programme with dramatic music, bongs and two presenters sitting behind the desk.

More importantly, it represented high-quality journalism coupled with very good correspondents and a superior editing team; big scoops and plenty of international news coverage.  

Everyone will remember that News At Ten ended every evening with an ‘and finally’ light-hearted story. One night, Reggie, who always had this smile across his face with this item, told viewers that an old lady’s cat had got trapped high up a tree and the emergency services had managed to rescue it.

He then closed the item and the programme by saying, ‘Unfortunately’ – while breaking into his wide smile – ‘they then accidentally drove over the cat and killed it.’ He’d allowed himself that unknowing smile, which he was famous for, and the next thing was the ITN phone lines were jammed all night with viewers protesting, ‘How dare he report on this poor cat’s death and have a laugh across his face.’

He didn’t mean to, but it was the irony of it all. 

We lived not far from each other in Kent, where he had a weekend house, which he later sold to the actor Rex Harrison. He was a very generous fellow and whenever you went out with him for a meal Reggie would always offer you a bottle of wine.  

I can’t remember where I was when I heard of Reggie’s death in 1984, aged just 51, but it was a shock despite the fact that he had been very unwell during those final years. I was very sorry to hear of his death as we’d been friends and colleagues for a long time. 

I’ll remember Reggie as an amusing fellow to be with and someone you could always rely on for a joke. That was how it was for us at ITN and on News At Ten and I think the public saw the same.”

Since then, he has continued to work as a writer, broadcaster and public speaker. John, 60, lives in London with his wife Anna and their daughter Lydia. 

“I began my working life as a newsroom assistant on the foreign desk of ITN. I wrote news scripts, supervised video packages and witnessed inspirational reporters like Sandy Gall preparing for his foreign assignments. I was hoping for a posting to one of our foreign bureaus, where I could find a good story to report on. I got stationed in Beirut.  

“After a quiet month, British people – including Brian Keenan – had been taken hostage, and like other bureau people, I decided to leave.  

“I got ambushed 10 minutes away from the airport when a car screeched to a halt in front of me and out jumped a guy with a Kalashnikov rifle. He dragged me over to his car, threw me in the back, blindfolded me and that was it for five years.  

“I was held in solitary confinement for months in a damp, iron-gated cell with no daylight. I was terrified. They later took me to another prison where I was held with a man who had wild piercing eyes and a huge mad beard. It was Brian Keenan and together we were held in various prisons for the next four years. I cannot imagine anybody on the planet as a better companion during that time.  

“During my final year in captivity, Brian was released, and with the luxury of a radio I could hear the support from Jill Morrell [John’s former girlfriend] and the Friends of John McCarthy Campaign. 

“After my release I began a long association with Radio 4, presenting, and I wrote books, made TV documentaries and undertook public speaking engagements.  

“More recently, I wrote You Can’t Hide The Sun, the story of the Palestinian people of Israel. It meant travelling from the Lebanese border almost to the tip of Sinai and on to Jerusalem. Other highlights include the radio series In the Prince’s Footsteps, which followed Albert, Prince of Wales’s 1862 royal tour to The Holy Land, Syria and the Greek Islands.  

“On a visit to Lebanon last year to make Paying For The Hostage, I heard a heartbreaking story from a mother whose son, a Lebanese soldier, had been kidnapped. I thought, ‘This is how it must have been for my mother.’ She died during my time in captivity.

“My daughter, Lydia, was six when she discovered my story from school friends. I told her the rest. She’s now 11.

“I’m planning a TV feature about the history of the River Devon in Suffolk, and there’s a Radio 4 Extra show planned about Michael Palin’s radio career. 

“I’ve kept in touch with everyone – Jill, Brian, Terry Waite and Terry Anderson; sadly the two Americans, Tom Sutherland and Frank Reed, who were held hostage with us, have since died.

“Brian and I travelled to Belfast recently, where I learned more about his life. We often spoke of Van Morrison when we were in prison and it led to my documentary, Van Morrison And Me, which was broadcast earlier this year.  

“During the dark days, Brian and I developed a valuable friendship. It really is extraordinary!”

“With Jemele Hill at the mike, it is no wonder ESPN ratings have ‘tanked,’ in fact, tanked so badly it is the talk of the industry!” tweeted Trump.

Trump has recently made a habit of wading into the politics of the NFL, which has caused backlash from players and commentators alike. 

After Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sided with Trump and said that players who make demonstrations during the national anthem should not be able to play, Hill suggested fans upset with Jones should boycott the advertisers who support Jones and the Cowboys.

“If you strongly reject what Jerry Jones said, the key is his advertisers. Don’t place the burden squarely on the players,” Hill tweeted.

ESPN then suspended Hill, saying she violated its social media policy for a second time and had “acknowledged letting her colleagues and company down.”

Previously Hill called Trump a white supremacist, though ESPN took no action against her at the time. 

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump suggested the US should cut back on tax breaks for NFL teams.

The restaurant chain Subway is threatening the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) with a suit seeking $ 210 million in damages over the “factually incorrect” report that Subway’s chicken was loaded with soy filler.

“Despite our efforts to share the facts with the CBC about the high quality of our chicken and to express our strong objections to their inaccurate claims, they have not issued a retraction, as we requested,” Subway said, according to the Toronto Star. “Serving high-quality food to our customers is our top priority, and we are committed to seeing that this factually incorrect report is corrected.”

CBC’s marketplace, a consumer watchdog program, aired a segment on February 24 called “The Chicken Challenge” and found Subway’s oven-roasted chicken contains a mere 53.6 percent chicken, and its chicken strips contain about 42.8 percent, according to DNA tests.

Rival fast-food sandwiches contained far more poultry, CBC reported, citing tests conducted by Trent University in Ontario. Wendy’s grilled chicken sandwich scored 88.5 percent, and Tim Horton’s chipotle grilled chicken wrap had 86.5 percent, according to the tests. Chicken bought in a grocery store is generally 100 percent actual poultry, according to the report.

Two independent lab tests of Subway chicken, conducted after the story aired, found “the Canadian chicken products tested had only trace amounts of soy, contradicting the accusations” made by CBC, Subway said.

The fast-food company said that CBC had called two weeks before the segment aired and “asked us a very specific question about the soy content in our food,” without mentioning it had conducted DNA tests as well as taste tests with customers.

CBC confirmed it had been notified of Subway’s suit.

“We believe our journalism to be sound and there is no evidence that we’ve seen that would lead us to change our position,” CBC told New York Post.

Last year, Subway settled a federal lawsuit alleging that its foot-long subs were less than a foot long, promising plaintiffs it would enforce the 12-inch standard.
