Speaking about the protests in other parts of the UK, Kay asked: “There have been protests in other parts of the UK, some of the large protests but none of them have descended that this has in Bristol, now three times. What is it about what’s happening in Bristol or maybe what is it about the way you’re policing it, that’s causing it to end in a different way there?”

Hitting back Supt Runacres replied: “I wouldn’t agree with that Jon. We have a long history of effectively facilitating protests in Bristol, we’ve done that extremely effectively.

“We’ve gained great support from the local community in Bristol around working together with them to facilitate protests.

“It’s something we pride ourselves on and the city prides itself on. On Sunday we ran what we believe to be a proportionate policing operation to facilitate any gathering that happened.

“The numbers that came on Sunday far exceeded those that we expected and there were clearly some amongst that group who had the intent of causing or using violence against the police and that unfortunately set the tone for that evening.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Paddy: If there was any motivation required for Bristol City players tonight, just let them know that Manchester City have flown to Bristol.

Joe: It’s not many nights as a grown man I feel as excited as this! I reckon everyone except for Manchester City & Bristol Rovers are willing us to win. Let’s get Ashton Gate rocking and make it a night to remember! I love this club!

Rich: 24,000 + City fans need to back this team for 90 minutes regardless of what happens on the pitch! They’ve done us proud to get this far… who knows, maybe we’ll go just that bit further!

WE COULD BE HEROES…

19:10: Classic Bowie.

Sorry I’ve clearly been watching too much ‘I’m Alan Partridge’ with an introduction like that.

It’s relevant enough because Lee Johnson has urged his Bristol City players to make themselves heroes by beating Manchester City tonight.

The Robins acquitted themselves superbly against Pep Guardiola’s quadruple-chasing side and were only beaten by a late Sergio Aguero goal after leading earlier in the game.

Manager Johnson, whose team beat Manchester United in the previous round, said: “For me, and the club, the Premier League is the dream. But, saying that, for this team to beat Man City and the players they have got, it would rank as one of the best results in the club’s history.

“They’ll go down in folklore. We’ll keep going, we don’t want to be brave losers. We want to compete and compete to win. The only way we will fulfil our ambitions is to get the results on the pitch. This is where the heroes are born.”

TEAM NEWS – BRISTOL CITY

19:05: Bristol City have made two changes for tonight’s showdown. Luke Steele returns between the sticks while Liam Walsh starts in defence.

BRISTOL CITY vs MANCHESTER CITY

19:00: Better late than never, Bristol City! Here’s Lee Johnson’s side to face Manchester City.

Bristol City XI: Steele, Wright, Flint, Magnusson, Brownhill, Pack, Smith, Walsh, Bryan, Paterson, Reid.

Subs: Subs: Wollacott, Baker, Eliasson, Kent, Engvall, Taylor, Diedhiou.

LATE…

18:55: No idea where this Bristol City team news if folks. I’ll let you know as soon as they release their starting XI. I assume the GIF department are responsible…

TEAM NEWS – MANCHESTER CITY

18:50: OK, so Pep Guardiola has fooled us all by naming a nearly full-strength side for tonight’s clash.

The Spanish tactician has made just two changes from the side who beat Newcastle 3-1 on Saturday with goalkeeper Ederson replaced by Claudio Bravo, presumably for comedy reasons.

There’s also a change in midfield as Bernardo Silva comes in for Raheem Sterling, who drops to the bench.

BRISTOL CITY vs MANCHESTER CITY

18:45: OK, here are the line-ups for tonight’s clash. Apparently a weakened City side still includes Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne.

Manchester City XI: Bravo, Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Bernardo, Silva, De Bruyne, Sane, Aguero.

Subs: Ederson, Danilo, Kompany, Sterling, Gündoğan, Mangala, Yaya Toure.

TEAM NEWS KLAXON

18:43: The line-ups should arrive in the next couple of minutes. Pep Guardiola suggested he would make some changes, but was that just to lull the mighty Bristol City into a false sense of security? Probably not.

FUN FACT

18:40: Alright, it’s not a particularly fun fact but I didn’t know how to headline this entry.

The last time a Championship side overturned a semi-final first leg deficit against a Premier League club in the competition was in 2000-01 – Birmingham lost the first leg 1-0 to Ipswich, before winning the return 4-1 at home.

I think we all remember where we were when that happened…

EVENING

18:30: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Carabao Cup.

It’s your classic David vs Goliath this evening as Championship Bristol City welcome Premier League juggernaut (love that word) to Ashton Gate.

Except in this story, Goliath has billions of pounds at his disposal and a Sergio Aguero who’s rediscovered his deadly form. Sling-shot might not cut it…

Anyway, the Championship side remain confident of upsetting the odds after losing only 2-1 to the runaway Premier League leaders in the first leg a fortnight ago.

Should be an interesting night in the west country, and I’ll keep you updated with everything. Let’s get going!

BRISTOL CITY vs MANCHESTER CITY – PREVIEW

Manchester City are still without Fabian Delph for tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Bristol City.

The England midfielder, who has successfully switched to left-back this season, has a knee problem. Youngster Oleksandr Zinchenko or the versatile Danilo will play in the position.

Captain Vincent Kompany (calf) remains doubtful while striker Gabriel Jesus (knee), midfielder Phil Foden (ankle) and defender Benjamin Mendy (knee) are unavailable.

Manchester City provisional squad: Ederson, Bravo, Walker, Otamendi, Stones, Mangala, Adarabioyo, Danilo, Zinchenko, Toure, Gundogan, Fernandinho, De Bruyne, D Silva, B Silva, Sterling, Sane, Diaz, Aguero.

Bristol City knocked Manchester United out in the quarter-final at Ashton Gate and are just a game from next month’s final at Wembley.

The Robins are fifth in the Championship but are winless in their last six matches, including the last-gasp defeat at the Etihad.

Bristol City can definitely win: Tammy Abraham issues warning to Manchester United https://briefnews.eu/bristol-city-can-definitely-win-tammy-abraham-issues-warning-to-manchester-united/ https://briefnews.eu/bristol-city-can-definitely-win-tammy-abraham-issues-warning-to-manchester-united/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 16:43:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bristol-city-can-definitely-win-tammy-abraham-issues-warning-to-manchester-united/

Chelsea striker Abraham enjoyed an impressive spell on loan with the Championship club last term, scoring 26 goals in 48 appearances.

City are not fancied by many to beat Premier League giants United but the 20-year-old believes they are in with a shot at reaching the last four.

Abraham said: ”Going into the game against , just make sure you guys enjoy yourselves. Have fun.

“Obviously, you’re under no pressure. It’s Man United. Hopefully you guys will be playing them next season as well.

“Just enjoy yourselves really and do well. Put on a good show for us. Bristol City can definitely win.”

Abraham’s goals were crucial to City avoiding relegation last season and he has only good things to say about the club.

“It was a great season for me and I really enjoyed myself,” he told BBC Bristol Sport.

“It would have been nice if we were higher up the table but it was a good learning experience for me.

“Bristol City will always be in my heart and it’s a club I’m always watching to see how they are doing.”

Abraham’s form at Ashton Gate earned him a loan move to Premier League outfit but his new club are in danger of the drop.

He has been one of the few positives for the Swans and said: ”This season was always about pushing on.

“The Championship gave me a great experience but the next level was try to push myself in the Premier League where I’ve already dreamt of playing.

“Of course, my parent club are there and If I want to compete to be in that team I need to prove it in the Premier League.

“I feel I have pushed on from last season, it would be nice if we were winning. But I’ve been through this with Bristol City and hopefully, we can do it again at Swansea.”

Bristol City's Lee Johnson raids daughter’s piggy bank for Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho https://briefnews.eu/bristol-citys-lee-johnson-raids-daughters-piggy-bank-for-man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho/ https://briefnews.eu/bristol-citys-lee-johnson-raids-daughters-piggy-bank-for-man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho/#respond Tue, 19 Dec 2017 16:51:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bristol-citys-lee-johnson-raids-daughters-piggy-bank-for-man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho/

Johnson is set to test his managerial wits against Mourinho in tomorrow’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash (8pm).

He hopes to chat with his counterpart after the final whistle.

And Johnson plans to “seduce” Mourinho to his office by offering him some plonk.

Johnson said: “I’ve purchased an extremely expensive bottle of wine that I’ve heard he likes – Portuguese red – so hopefully he’ll get the message and I can seduce him into the office and chat a little bit about football and pick his brain on one or two things.

“I’ve got to be honest, in the technical area he’ll just be another manager and it’ll just be a case of my competitive nature and the players will try and outgun what is world-class opposition both in the technical area and on the pitch.

“It’s something that we’re looking forward to but we won’t be in awe of and we won’t fear and everything we do will be about trying to progress the club into the next round.

“It’ll be tough, it’ll be difficult but we’ll give it our best.”

When asked if the bottle of wine means he won’t able to buy his daughter a Christmas present, Johnson joked: “Well I had to raid her piggy bank so she’s going to miss out on more than a Christmas present but it might be worth it because I’m going to ask him for free loans while I’m there.”

Johnson’s side are flying high in the Championship table – a far cry from the relegation scrap of last term.

A number of Robins fans wanted the 36-year-old sacked as they flirted with the drop but owner Stephen Lansdown stuck by his man.

Johnson has crafted a youthful team that play with a swashbuckling style and he is eager to see how they match up against some of the world’s best players.

“We’ve got a group that is very hungry to prove how good they are,” he said.

“It’s a chance for the players, the club and the supporters to enhance their reputation. There’s minimal pressure involved apart from the pressure we put on ourselves. It’s a big challenge to see whether or not we can cope with Premier League football.

“I’m sure they [United] can handle pressure, the players and the manager are world class so they’ll be confident enough in their abilities for a trip to Ashton Gate, but this place is a difficult place to play.

“This will be an unbelievable atmosphere.”

Ben Stokes EXCLUSIVE: Sponsors could leave disgraced England star after Bristol bar fiasco https://briefnews.eu/ben-stokes-exclusive-sponsors-could-leave-disgraced-england-star-after-bristol-bar-fiasco/ https://briefnews.eu/ben-stokes-exclusive-sponsors-could-leave-disgraced-england-star-after-bristol-bar-fiasco/#respond Sun, 01 Oct 2017 02:58:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ben-stokes-exclusive-sponsors-could-leave-disgraced-england-star-after-bristol-bar-fiasco/

Events outside the Mbargo nightclub in Bristol on Monday night could have a similarly transformative effect.

Ben Stokes has already been given the cold shoulder by England and now the heat will be on his sponsors after a week that has forever tarnished the reputation of one of world cricket’s biggest stars.

One leading sports marketing figure, Tim Wright, the former head of IMG in India, believes that Stokes’ actions on Monday night – regardless of what prompted them – could cost him as much as £30m over the course of his career.

And that could ultimately prove to be a conservative estimate.

When news of Tiger Woods’ infidelity scandal broke back in 2009, the world’s then number one golfer lost $ 22m of sponsorship in a single year as Gatorade, AT&T and Accenture fled to the hills.

In perhaps the most dramatic example of what can happen to a sportsman’s fortunes, Lance Armstrong lost eight sponsors in just 12 hours in 2012 following the publication of a damning doping report. It’s estimated that Armstrong lost $ 150m in future earnings as a result of his actions.

The video of Stokes’ brawling left the ECB with no choice but to take immediate action against him. Within 24 hours, similarly disgraceful footage of Stokes mimicking Katie Price’s disabled son did further damage.

“Professional sports people tend to try and keep a relatively clean nose,” says Rob Wilson, sports finance expert at Sheffield Hallam University. “They try and link playing success to the brand. Little misdemeanours can be glossed over but this is something else entirely, this is a pretty toxic situation.

“England’s sponsors could also put pressure on the ECB to think twice about picking him in the future because of what has happened.”

His behaviour won’t have gone unnoticed in India, where he earned £1.7m for two months work in last season’s IPL.

He could have expected to at least match that figure in the 2018 auction after being named the tournament’s most valuable player in his first season.

One former IPL coach has told Express Sport that it would now take a brave franchise to sign him, regardless of the fee, after the events of last week.

In the short term, though, the question isn’t how much he’s worth. The question is whether he’ll ever play for his country again.

Love-rival neighbors jailed after ‘knife duel’ caught on CCTV (VIDEO)

The 22-year-old victim, who was out drinking with friends, was then assaulted outside the bar and put into a car before being driven across the city, police say.

The man later managed to escape the gang but required hospital treatment for injuries to his face.

The video shows the victim sitting at a table with three other men. More people come in and the victim gets up to leave.

As he walks away he is grabbed by one member of the group and begins to wrestle his way free after being put in a choke hold.

Three or four more members of the gang then wade in to restrain the man, who is pulled to the floor and dragged to the door by his arms.

The kidnapping happens in full view of other drinkers at the Blue Lagoon in Bristol, but no one intervenes.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police have released the video in an appeal for more information.

Judah Adunbi: Bristol Police Taser Afro-Caribbean Community Relations Adviser [Video] https://briefnews.eu/judah-adunbi-bristol-police-taser-afro-caribbean-community-relations-adviser-video/ https://briefnews.eu/judah-adunbi-bristol-police-taser-afro-caribbean-community-relations-adviser-video/#respond Sun, 22 Jan 2017 13:55:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/judah-adunbi-bristol-police-taser-afro-caribbean-community-relations-adviser-video/ A police officer in the United Kingdom holds a Taser while standing in a line with other officers.

Sixty-three-year old Judah Adunbi was walking down the street near his home in the Easton area of Bristol, in the United Kingdom, when two local police officers apparently mistook him for someone they were “looking for,” as reported by The Guardian. After a verbal exchange and a scuffle, Mr. Adunbi, who is one of the founding members of an advisory group tasked with harmonizing relations between the “Afro-Caribbean community and the constabulary” in Bristol, fell to the ground as one of the police officers shouted “Taser, Taser, Taser,” several times, deployed her weapon, and the man wreathed in pain.

“I was just paralysed. I thought that was it. I thought they were taking my life,” Judah Adunbi was quoted.

Sometime after the verbal altercation began between Adunbi and the police, video footage was recorded by a neighbor, named Tom Cherry, which shows the man, who has a thick Caribbean accent and long dreadlocks, refusing to give his name and attempting to enter a gate, presumably to the yard of his home.

Mr. Adunbi is reported to have sat on the community involvement panel of the municipal Crown Prosecution Service, as well as the independent advisory group for Bristol. The Avon and Somerset Police are said to have referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission “voluntarily.” Body-cam footage from the Bristol officers is said to be available.

“Leave me alone,” Mr. Adunbi can seen telling the police.

“That was totally unnecessary,” the neighbor can be heard in video as Adunbi falls the ground from the shock of the Taser.

The male police officer told Cherry, who was filming the scene, that the 63-year-old was fighting them, after they had attempted to place him under arrest. The neighbor insisted that Mr. Adunbi did not fight the police officers and that it was them who first put their hands on him. Video would appear to back up Tom Cherry’s assertion.

After first refusing to provide his identity, lying on the ground after being Tasered, while one officer remained ready to shock him again and the other informed Mr. Adunbi that he was going to be handcuffed, the Bristol resident threw his wallet to the female officer, and encouraged her to check his identity.

After more residents began to gather, attracted by Mr. Adunbi’s exhortation that he was being murdered, some began to suggest to the officers that they may have made a mistake. The male police officer finally verbally placed the man under arrest once he and his partner had handcuffs securely fitted on both of his wrists. The charges against Adunbi have since been dropped.

Chief Superintendent Jon Reilly with the Avon and Somerset Police, responsible for policing in Bristol, told The Guardian that he had met with Mr. Adunbi and that the body camera footage captured by the officers was being examined in an effort to “understand what happened” and be as “open and transparent as possible.”

“At first, you don’t accuse someone of being someone else,” Mr. Adunbi stated. “You ask questions. The first thing they should have done is come to me in a polite manner. The way they approached me – they were accusing me. That is wrong.”

“We work really hard to work positively with all communities and I see no reason why that should change,” Superintendent Reilly stated.

The Avon and Somerset chief noted that the force is under no obligation to refer incidents involving the use of Tasers to the complaints commission. The Guardian cited research conducted by Liberty indicating that “black people are three times more likely to be Tasered than white people.” Cindy Butts, with IPCC, vowed that a “thorough investigation” will be conducted and encouraged any other witnesses or those in possession of further video footage to contact the force.
