Verbier in SwitzerlandPH

Verbier is an Alpine village in Switzerland’s Valais Canton

As a fan of cycling on slightly less steep terrain, like Norfolk for instance, I’m apprehensive at first about getting in the saddle in Verbier, the world-famous Swiss Alpine ski resort.

But our bicycles are all electric, which makes them a great way to explore at high altitude with minimal effort. Beyond the snow season, Verbier is a green oasis accessible to all, as it emerges from the white blanket of powder which has transformed this once remote rural farming region into one of the most renowned winter playgrounds of the rich and famous.

And now activities are even easier to reach thanks to a new pass called Verbier Infinite Playground (or VIP for short, in keeping with the resort’s glitzy winter image) – a tourist card giving visitors free travel on cable cars and local buses and discounts on pursuits like mountain biking. Numerous ski and snowboarding runs, access paths for farmers and high altitude restaurants criss-cross the meadows, providing more than 500 miles of cycling trails, with a mix of gradients from seriously steep to totally flat.

After a cautious start on our first venture downwards, at around 6,500ft, the gradient and rough stones smooth out and I relax to drink in the spectacular scenery.

We pass a herd of glossy black Hérens cows, their bells clanging unmistakably as they graze the lush alpine meadows.

They produce milk for the area’s globally renowned cheeses, which are delicious as I discover on a visit to a factory shop back down in the town at award-winning cheesemaker Laiterie de Verbier.

It is open when we drop in but we still can’t resist the chance to try the cheese vending machine outside the factory, loaded solely with tasty half or quarter wheels of raclette and bags of “DIY” fondue to which you just add white wine. During a factory tour we are served samples of cheese and see the cellar where maturing wheels of raclette, each about the size of a car tyre, are stacked from floor to ceiling on shelves.

The next day we’re up early and back on our bikes from our base at the Hotel Bristol.

Luckily they are dual-powered so I switch off the juice and pedal under my own steam to the Verbier 3D Sculpture Park, where works by international artists are exhibited outside over a wide path between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux.

Highlights include a 12ft high red, white-and-black bird dubbed the Pregnant Pelican and billboard-size images of skiers standing in line, backs to camera, sporting underwear daubed with letters spelling out the message “save the climate”.

At the end of the exhibition we find a wooden sign spelling out “Verbier” in metre-high letters just below the La Croix-de-Coeur restaurant (at the Col de la Croix de Coeur), where we stop for lunch, serves impressive artistically presented local specialities, including dried meats, alongside yet more spectacular views.

Highlights include a 12ft high red, white-and-black bird dubbed the Pregnant Pelican and billboard-size images of skiers standing in line, backs to camera, sporting underwear daubed with letters spelling out the message “save the climate”.

Mountain yoga in SwitzerlandPH

Mountain yoga with a beautiful view

Up in the mountains it’s all about the views and I’m off to try out something completely different.

We take the cable car to Savoleyres, at around 7,500ft and stroll to a wooden platform in the middle of a slope. On the far side of the valley snow-capped peaks rise, while the rooftops of Verbier are below.

This is where I’m about to try mountain yoga – and what a location it turns out to be.

Moving through different poses, I hear the tweet of birds and the buzz of insects also enjoying the warm rays of the mid-afternoon sun.

It feels a little surreal, particularly when our instructor, Kirstin, tells us to twist and “face the chairlift”.

It’s a good way to work up a fresh appetite, and back down in Verbier we enjoy a four-course dinner on the terrace of Le Chalet d’Adrien looking out over the valley. With Verbier’s close proximity to Italy, it’s not surprising that many dishes originate from there so I enjoy a rich risotto with chanterelle mushrooms.

Verbier is inviting any time of year, with its pretty wooden chalets and endless bars and restaurants. The chefs must be inspired here, I thought, as I set out on a foraging hike one morning.

Travelling by cable car to the neighbouring resort of La Tzoumaz, we meet our guide, nicknamed Cherries, and spend a couple of hours walking through meadows and woodland to find lunch, as Cherries excitedly explains how to pick and cook a feast.

She says: “We will gather stinging nettles for pesto and clover and daisies for salads.”

I don’t get stung and our efforts are not just edible but pretty good.

Meanwhile, for the best view of all with the least effort, we take a final cable car trip to Mont Fort, Verbier’s highest peak, where the jagged giants jostling for space on the horizon include world-famous Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn.

Beautiful as they are, thankfully we are out of time to climb them.

That said, we’d had a pretty adventurous time and the trip proved that you don’t need snow to enjoy the full active-Swiss experience.

Cancer news: Brisk walk each day 'may cut risk of dying from the disease' https://briefnews.eu/cancer-news-brisk-walk-each-day-may-cut-risk-of-dying-from-the-disease-2/ https://briefnews.eu/cancer-news-brisk-walk-each-day-may-cut-risk-of-dying-from-the-disease-2/#respond Tue, 06 Jun 2017 09:23:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cancer-news-brisk-walk-each-day-may-cut-risk-of-dying-from-the-disease-2/

Exercise could be a powerful tool helping to slow down the disease and cut the risk of death

Two new studies presented at the world’s biggest cancer conference show that exercise could be a powerful tool, helping to slow down the disease and cut the risk of death.

Just 25 minutes a day of brisk walking is enough to drive improvements and lowers the chance of dying from cancer by up to 42 per cent, the research suggests.

Following a healthy diet with five portions a day of fruit and vegetables and eating whole grains was also shown to help.

The research, presented at the American Society for Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago, involved patients with bowel and breast cancer.

In the first study, 337 women newly-diagnosed with breast cancer who had undergone surgery to remove tumours were split into two groups.

For eight months, one group was told to follow an exercise programme of 180 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise.

The second group received standard care.

Over a typical follow-up of eight years, the results showed that exercise had “clear potential to influence survival”.

Those in the exercise group were around half as likely to die as those in the usual care group and less likely to have their disease progress, the study, which has not yet been published in a journal, suggested.

Sandra Haye, senior research fellow at the Queensland University of Technology, who conducted the study, said most women used walking as their most common form of exercise, with some adding resistance training – such as weights or cross trainer – into the mix.

She said studies on other cancers, such as bowel and prostate cancer, have also shown a beneficial effect of exercise.

“Engaging in some activity or exercise is better than none, and doing more is generally better than less,” she said.

Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive of Breast Cancer Now, said: “These preliminary findings add to the increasing body of evidence suggesting that exercise could improve the chances of survival for people diagnosed with breast cancer.

Just 25 minutes a day of brisk walking is enough to drive improvements

“Crucially, the benefits may also not just be limited to survival. Keeping active may also help patients cope with their treatments better, improving their quality of life and health and wellbeing both during and after treatment.“

In the second study, 992 people with stage three bowel cancer that had begun to spread were assessed twice over seven years for diet and lifestyle.

Researchers looked at how closely people followed American Cancer Society guidelines on nutrition and exercise for people with cancer.

The guidelines recommend patients keep to a healthy weight, exercise at a moderate-intensity level for 150 minutes per week and eat healthy food.

Processed and red meat should be limited, while people should aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables per day and a diet rich in whole grains.

The study found that compared to those people who adhered least to the guidelines, those who followed them closely had a 42 per cent lower risk of dying and a trend towards better disease-free survival.

The researchers concluded: “(Bowel) cancer patients with a healthy body weight who engaged in physical activity, ate a diet high in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits and low in red/processed meats, and drank moderate alcohol had longer disease-free survival and overall survival than patients who did not engage in these behaviours.“

Erin van Blarigan, associate professor in University of California San Francisco department of epidemiology and biostatistics, who worked on the study, said it was thought that exercise may affect cancer by lowering levels of insulin and insulin resistance.

“It appears that high fasting insulin and insulin resistance and chronic inflammation likely contribute to many cancers, as well as other chronic diseases such as heart disease.

“Doctors absolutely should counsel patients to exercise.“

He said the study showed that three components of the guidelines – healthy body weight, physical activity, and diet – were important.

“I would recommend that patients build up to exercising for at least 150 minutes per week,” he said. “Brisk walking is a great exercise for everyone.“

Dr Vicky Coyle, a Cancer Research UK scientist at Queen’s University Belfast, said: “Patients with advanced bowel cancer could benefit from keeping a healthy weight, being physically active, and eating a healthy diet, as this study suggests.

“But it can be difficult to tease apart individual lifestyle factors and to see how they could affect bowel cancer survival.

“Evidence is stronger and more consistent for some lifestyle factors than others, physical activity being one of the stronger links.“

Volkswagen Golf GTE: A bargin hybrid with brisk performance https://briefnews.eu/volkswagen-golf-gte-a-bargin-hybrid-with-brisk-performance/ https://briefnews.eu/volkswagen-golf-gte-a-bargin-hybrid-with-brisk-performance/#respond Sat, 27 May 2017 23:35:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/volkswagen-golf-gte-a-bargin-hybrid-with-brisk-performance/

Volkswagen Golf GTEVolkswagen

The new Volkswagen Golf GTE

There’s an electric motor to potter silently around town with zero emissions and a normal combustion engine for trips when you can’t get to a charging station.

The Volkswagen Golf GTE claims to be able to add an element of enjoyment to that mix too, with brisk performance and styling that is closely linked to the likes of sportier models such as the GTI. This styling is one of the things that has been most changed by the GTE’s mid-life update, while Volkswagen has also added in new technology with the promise of more to come.

As with other more performance orientated models in the Golf range, the GTE now comes with a bespoke front bumper. It gets blue details on the lower part of the grille, while the C-shaped daytime running lights are now integrated into the bumper and feature sharp fins to create the visual link to the GTI.

The headlights are also upgraded for this refresh, with LED lights now standard front and rear and a dynamic, sweeping, indicator light at the back.

The turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine is combined with a 75kw electric motor that together produce 204bhp – enough for a 0 to 60mph time of 7.6 seconds. The 138mph top speed is also respectably sporty.

Officially at least, emissions are 38g/km and the average fuel economy is 166mpg but much will depend on where and how you drive it.

Talking of which, there are fewer changes to the way the GTE drives, which is no bad thing. The car’s eco leanings are apparent from the first moment you press the start button.

The Volkswagen Golf GTEVolkswagen

The Volkswagen Golf GTE claims to be able to add an element of enjoyment to the mix

Regardless of which of the three modes you were in when you last turned the car off – Electric, Hybrid or GTE – it always starts off in electric if there is enough charge in the battery to do so.

The electric motor and instant acceleration mean overtaking at any speed is simple

If the battery does drop to empty, the switch between electric and engine is barely perceptible. The only time engine noise is apparent is when you select GTE mode. This boosts throttle responsiveness to add a touch more pace and sharpen the steering.

It also relies more on the engine, resulting in slightly more noise under acceleration.

It’s not the sonorous note of a hot hatch but is more befitting of a car that VW says is intended to be more geared towards performance than pure efficiency.

The extra weight of the batteries has a few effects overall, though. The GTE is less agile than the GTI, which is 18 stone lighter, and this is apparent in its handling. It is more suited to gentle cruising than being thrown around on back roads.

But the electric motor and instant acceleration mean overtaking at any speed is simple.

That battery weight is likely to impact on fuel economy once the electricity is depleted, so while the Golf GTE is capable of longer trips it is better suited to lots of shorter trips with regular access to a charging socket.

The battery is chargeable to its full 31-mile-range capacity in just under three and a half hours from a household socket.

Volkswagen Golf GTEPH

styling is one of the things that has been most changed by the GTE’s mid-life update

A new piece of technology will arrive in the Golf GTE this summer to help make the most of the electric range. Using data from the car’s navigation system it will decide when to use the battery or engine, saving the electricity for towns and not wasting energy on steep hills. It will join an increased level of tech for the first time on the plug-in Golf.

The other change to the GTE’s technical equipment offering is a redesigned infotainment system, which comes with an 8-inch screen as standard and 9.2-inch screen that has gesture controls on the all-new Discover Pro version.

The front half of the GTE’s cabin is similar to the rest of the Golf range. A blue tartan upholstery design is the most notable change. But the rear suffers slightly from having to carry around those batteries. The space under the boot floor is given over to them, so the boot is 100 litres smaller. And the seats-up capacity of 272 litres is smaller than its plug-in hybrid Audi, Kia and Toyota rivals.

VOLKSWAGONVOLKSWAGON

It always starts off in electric if there is enough charge in the battery to do so

Buying a car that effectively comes with two engines adds to the purchase price, which was the biggest criticism of the Golf GTE. This update looks to address that, dropping the price by £3,420. The starting price still isn’t cheap, at £30,635, but it is lower than all major rivals and helps make the GTE a more compelling option. This reduced price and the benefits of running on electric power for miles go a long way to offsetting the lack in practicality.

The GTE won’t be for all but it is a fantastic option for those who need a bit of everything.
