The pilot has lost many of his teeth and cannot eat properly.

The jailed Russian citizen is being deprived of adequate healthcare, despite repeatedly sending requests to the prison administration. After years in US custody, Yaroshenko has lost 10 teeth, and the rest require treatment, the pilot said in his latest letter to the administration, obtained by Izvestia.

“[The teeth] have been kicked out by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) operatives, fell out or were removed due to horrible conditions, bad food and sloppy dentist work,” Yaroshenko wrote.

The pilot’s health is declining; he cannot eat properly as he suffers from digestive problems. “Every time I eat, I’m afraid to choke,” Yaroshenko stated. The authorities, however, have not even provided him with a medical evaluation to determine what is wrong with his health.

“I don’t receive any assistance with my problems and I still was not sent to a medical exam, which they promised when my family came to visit. There’s a dentist at the jail medical ward, yet all he can do is to pull out the remaining teeth. And there aren’t many of them left,” Yaroshenko said.

This summer, he was transferred from Fort Dix federal prison in New Jersey to another prison in Danbury, Connecticut, after he was allegedly involved in a scuffle with another inmate. The new jail has even less adequate healthcare, according to Yaroshenko. Apart from that, prisoners in Danbury are not allowed to go for walks in the open air from November to March, which further contributes to his declining health.

Konstantin Yaroshenko was once a professional civil aircraft pilot, working in various countries on the African continent. In 2010, he went to Liberia seeking work, but was promptly arrested in a DEA sting operation and secretly transferred to the US in violation of international law and universal diplomatic protocol.

The pilot was accused of “conspiring” to carry a large batch of cocaine from South America to Liberia and sentenced to 20 years behind bars in 2011. Yaroshenko has always maintained his innocence, stating that the charges against him were actually based on statements he made due to his poor understanding and command of English.

‘God of chaos’: Milky Way star on the brink of massive gamma-ray supernova explosion https://briefnews.eu/god-of-chaos-milky-way-star-on-the-brink-of-massive-gamma-ray-supernova-explosion/ https://briefnews.eu/god-of-chaos-milky-way-star-on-the-brink-of-massive-gamma-ray-supernova-explosion/#respond Wed, 21 Nov 2018 10:58:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/god-of-chaos-milky-way-star-on-the-brink-of-massive-gamma-ray-supernova-explosion/ A star 8,000 light years from Earth is on the verge of a huge supernova explosion, which could produce the Milky Way’s first gamma-ray explosion, a dangerous and extremely energetic event.

Australian scientists at the University of Sydney discovered the rare ‘God of chaos’ star, which they say could produce the Milky Way’s first known gamma-ray burst, a lethal combination of dust and gas mixed with wind as fast as 12 million km/ph, which is one of the most extreme energetic events after the Big Bang.

The researchers published their findings in the latest issue of the journal ‘Nature Astronomy’. ‘God of chaos’ is part of a two-star system named after the Egyptian serpentine Apep.

Apep comprises of two hot, luminous stars which orbit each other every hundred years or so. Scientists say one of the stars has the perfect conditions to create a gamma-ray burst which has the potential to strip Earth’s ozone from the atmosphere, drastically increasing our exposure to UV light from the sun.

Fortunately, the star doesn’t appear to be aimed at Earth, however researchers say they “can’t be certain what the future has in store” for Apep.

“The system might slow down enough so it explodes as a normal supernova rather than a gamma-ray burst. However, in the meantime, it is providing astronomers a ringside seat into beautiful and dangerous physics that we have not seen before in our galaxy,” said leader of the research group Professor Peter Tuthill.

The study was conducted using the Anglo-Australian Telescope, and the Very Large Telescope in the Atacama Desert, Chile, with the help of researchers at the University of Edinburgh, University of Sheffield and the University of New South Wales.

Man Utd vs Newcastle LIVE: Express Sport brings you LIVE Premier League coverage

  • Jose Mourinho under pressure amid sack reports
  • Man Utd have got off to their worst league start in 29 years
  • Newcastle are without a league win this season
  • Man Utd have lost one of their last 36 games against The Magpies

MAN UTD vs NEWCASTLE

42: Pogba strikes a left-footed effort from 20 yards on target, but it’s easy for Dubravka. The shot is met with sarcastic cheers from the crowd.

40: Penalty shout! Shelvey takes a free-kick from a tight angle and it strikes Young, who’s in the wall, on the arm. It’s in an unnatural position away from his body. On top of that, the Anthony Taylor doesn’t award the corner.

37: A toxic atmosphere is building in the ground. Lukaku gives the ball away and the groans are deafening.

34: De Gea makes a superb close-range save from Muto, who nodded close to the keeper from six yards.

33: Aside from the pitch – both Ed Woodward and Mike Ashley are in the stands, by the way. Woodward rumoured to be booking Salford’s finest Italian emporium as we speak.

30: Martial goes on a mazy run but is easily halted. Groans from the crowd.

27: McTominay deals well with a threat from Kenedy on the left, forcing him to the byline. Useless stat: Man Utd have had 70% possession.

Ed Woodward

25: McTominay seems to have been moved to centre-back alongside Smalling, with Young and Shaw bombing up the wings. It’s effectively a very attacking 4-1-4-1.

22: Rashford misses a great chance as he headers wide from six yards. He quickly runs to get the ball and plant it for Dubravka to kick. The Sloavkian takes his time.

20: Hard to tell what formation United have slotted into, because the game is so stretched. Once – if – there’s calm, the strcuture of the team might be clearer. Or maybe Jose’s just thought: “To hell with it.”

19: MAN UTD SUB – Mata on for Bailly.

17: Juan Mata is being stripped to come on. Jose is not messing about. Eric Bailly expected to come off.

15: Young takes a regular throw-in and there are boos ringing around Old Trafford. Haven’t seen anything of the like before.

13: United have a couple corners which come to nothing, everyone still seems in disbelief around the ground.

Muto

10: GOAL! Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle | Muto

WOW. This is incredible, Newcastle – who scored three goals in seven games before today, now have two in 10 minutes. The Magpies simply sustained a period of pressure in the United box and Muto, making his first league start, somehow finds room in the crammed box, gets away from Young with a neat shift to his left, and slams it home. Boos at Old Trafford.

07: GOAL! Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle | Kenedy

Ah dear, Jose. Kenedy is threaded through a ball from a throw-in and runs at Young, who he easily turns inside out with a simple cut inside onto his left foot. The Brazilian then simply arcs the ball home past De Gea’s outstretched hand.

Pogba

04: Newcastle’s first foray into the United half comes to nothing after a poor cross from Kenedy. Young tries to match his opponent with an equally shoddy cross.

03: United start brightly, breaking down the left with Anthony Martial, but his through ball for Lukaku is intercepted.

01: The Old Trafford faithful are in full voice getting behind the team. The travelling Geordies aren’t half making a racquet, either.

Mourinho

KICK-OFF

Just prior to kick-off, Mourinho playfully squirts water from his bottle at the camera.

There’s a good atmosphere inside Old Trafford as the teams come out.

Mourinho comes out of the tunnel with a rye smile – part of you thinks he enjoys these sort of crises?

17:20: We are only eight weeks into the season, yet this is the fifth side from last year’s top six who Newcastle have had to face. Talk about a tough start. Anyhow, here’s what manager Rafa Benitez had to say before the game…

“We have to perform in the way we want to perform, so we need to be solid, stay in the game and we go into every game trying to win.

“[Is belief still in the camp?] 100 per cent, it’s a long race so we have to carry on. Last year we were at the bottom in January and we finished 10th. We must believe this year we can do the same.

“Manchester United is a very strong team, it doesn’t matter which players play. But we believe we can come here and get something.”

Paul Pogba

Man Utd vs Newcastle live: Paul Pogba gets the blood flowing (Image: Getty)

17:10: Mourinho has won all seven home matches against Newcastle in all competitions, and has this to say ahead of the game…

“[Is this a must-win game?] Every game is a must-win game. That’s how I feel and that’s how I like my players to feel. It’s about the team, it’s not about [individual selections].

“Anthony [Martial], in the last match for 15 minutes [v Valencia], was alive and there is a good connection between him and the fans here at home. They can push him.”

“We didn’t have a phenomenal performance against Valencia but it was positive and to make lots of changes would not be the right thing. In this moment Ashley Young can give us a bit more speed and energy on the right side.”

Old Trafford

Man Utd vs Newcastle live: Fine blue skies over Old Trafford agead of the late kick-off (Image: Getty)

17:00: The 3pm games are over, with Wolves and Everton claiming one-goal margin wins at Crystal Palace and Leicester, respectively.

Bournemouth continued their unpredictable form with an incredible 4-0 away win against Watford, while Spurs dodged a European hangover with a narrow 1-0 victory over Cardiff. Burnley drew 1-1 at home to Huddersfield.

Those results mean that United have temporarily slipped down to 11th, but a win could see them rise to eighth.

Newcastle would move to 16th with a win, but a freakish eight-goal battering would put them bottom.

Premier League table

16:45: Two changes for Manchester United from the team that faced West Ham last weekend; Bailly and Rashford come in for Lindelof and Fellaini, as the side seemingly reverts to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Club captain Antonio Valencia is left out of the matchday squad after liking an Instagram post suggesting Mourinho should be sacked, following United’s midweek 0-0 draw with Valencia.

Newcastle, meanwhile, make three switches, with Fernandez, Manquillo and Muto coming in for Clark, Atsu and Joselu.

The Magpies have scored the least amount of goals in the league this season – will two attackers bear more fruit?

GOOD EVENING

Welcome to live commentary between Manchester United and Newcastle. There are a few parallels between the sides at Old Trafford tonight: miserable managers, out-of-form players, and short-fused fans. So we’re in for a treat.

United have denied reports that Jose Mourinho will be sacked irrespective of the result tonight, and have in fact offered him their backing (unlike in the summer).

As for Rafael Benitez, he and his players were wined and dined at a Tyneside Italian during the week, with club owner Mike Ashley promising a holiday for the players, should they stay in the Premier League. league.

Brooke Henderson on brink of rewriting history at home https://briefnews.eu/brooke-henderson-on-brink-of-rewriting-history-at-home/ https://briefnews.eu/brooke-henderson-on-brink-of-rewriting-history-at-home/#respond Sun, 26 Aug 2018 04:26:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brooke-henderson-on-brink-of-rewriting-history-at-home/

REGINA – What could be one of Canada's best sports stories of the year will be decided on Sunday by a Canadian golfer barely out of her teens.

Brooke Henderson, 20, from Smiths Falls, Ont., holds a one-shot lead over a pair of 19-year-olds, American Angel Yin and Nasa Hataoka of Japan, the latter of whom she’ll be playing with in the final group on Sunday at Wascana Country Club.

"It's pretty sweet," said Henderson. "But I'm a long way from [rewriting history]. There are like a million players within five shots."

Yin, a Los Angeles native and a portrait of California quirkiness and cool, won in Dubai in December after earning a captain's pick on the U.S. squad that won the Solheim Cup a few months earlier. Much like Henderson a few years ago, Yin is considered one of the game's best young players.

After shooting a third round 70, Brooke Henderson is in the lead at the Canadian Open at -14. 2:22

But she comes across as someone who is too young to understand the weight of history.

"The crowds have been great here, so I don't feel that," said Yin, when asked if she feels like she's been cast in the role of villain. "I mean I have people out here cheering me on too, but I realize they are also [rooting] for Brooke.

"It's just great to see so many people support women's golf."

'Canada's Tiger Woods'

Just behind Yin and Hataoka is defending champion and current World No. 1 Sung Hyun Park, who is two shots back.

Park, who earlier this week called Henderson "Canada's Tiger Woods," fired a final-round 64 last year at Ottawa Hunt to pickup a two-shot victory. One day earlier, Henderson had set the course record at with a 63 but slumped to 12th place on Sunday.

Assuming the forecasted rain holds off, whoever wins on Sunday will likely have to shoot as well as Park and Henderson did last year in Ottawa because of the crowded leaderboard. If Wascana becomes a difficult morass, Henderson seems unconcerned.

"I won in New Zealand in the rain," she said, an interesting comment because of another player who is chasing her.

Lydia Ko, a 21-year-old New Zealander who has won this tournament three times, all while still in her teens, is showing signs of breaking out of a two-year slumber that saw her relinquish the No. 1 ranking.

Ko has had nothing but high praise for Henderson and for Canadian golf fans all week.

"Canadians have kinda taken me in as their own a little bit," she said. "Every win is special but [my] wins here have been a bit more special I think.

"I was just saying to Jodi [Ewart-Shadoff, Ko's third-round playing partner] that the crowds here love their golf and they love seeing the LPGA here. With Brooke being at the top of the leaderboard that really helps to draw a lot of people in."

Special connection

It's been just a little more than a month since Georgia Hall of England won the Women's British Open. The 22-year-old from Bournemouth is also in Regina this week. Given that Henderson is attempting to do precisely what she did last month, Hall's observations on Saturday were notable.

"This is Brooke's sixth major," said Hall, "You can tell how much it means to her and to the [Canadian] fans this week. It's been really special to be here and see that connection they have with her."

Jocelyne Bourassa is the lone Canadian woman to win the national crown, emerging victorious in 1973 in her home province when the tournament was dubbed La Canadienne. The men's national championship was last won by a Canadian in 1954, when Montrealer Pat Fletcher took the crown at Point Grey in Vancouver.

There have been a handful of close calls but both droughts are among the most vexing on the Canadian sports scene.

Mike Weir famously came the closest, losing the 2004 Canadian Open at Glen Abbey to Vijay Singh in a playoff. The parallels to Singh, then the No. 1 player in the world while breaking Canadian hearts 14 years ago, and to Park right now, are obvious.

Lorie Kane was for many years Canada's best female golfer. She won four times on the LPGA Tour but never did better than fourth in this tournament. The late Dawn Coe-Jones finished as high as third.

Bourassa, long a champion of women's golf in Canada as director of this event, is stricken with Alzheimer's disease and exited the game before Henderson became a national figure in her own right.

Henderson paid tribute to Bourassa on Saturday.

"I don't know [a lot] about her but I do know that she was an amazing golfer and to win a national championship at home is special…I hope to be like her tomorrow."

ITV Good Morning Britain: John Prescott demands CHANGE in Labour as Corbyn faces the brink https://briefnews.eu/itv-good-morning-britain-john-prescott-demands-change-in-labour-as-corbyn-faces-the-brink/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-good-morning-britain-john-prescott-demands-change-in-labour-as-corbyn-faces-the-brink/#respond Wed, 01 Aug 2018 14:51:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-good-morning-britain-john-prescott-demands-change-in-labour-as-corbyn-faces-the-brink/

As Jeremy Corbyn apologised this morning for his party’s handling of anti-semitism, former Labour MP John Prescott agreed the debacle had been “badly handled”.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, he said: “I don’t think we have handled the matter sufficiently.

“Both through the executive and the PLP. We have real problems at the moment… but you must keep on talking, not shouting at each other.”

Mr Prescott’s comments follow calls to suspend Peter Willsman – who sits on the party’s National Executive Committee – after he was recorded saying “Jewish Trump fanatics” made up allegations of anti-semitism.

Audio of Willsman making the explosive claims was published last night, and has since been a discussion point within the political sector and the Labour party.

Mr Willsman is currently standing for re-election to Labour’s NEC on a slate called the “JC9” – although there are now calls for him to be withdrawn from the nomination process.

Tom Watson, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, tweeted: “For the avoidance of doubt: Peter Willsman is and always has been a loud mouthed bully. He disgusts me.”

Mr Willsman has since told the BBC: “I deeply apologise for any offence caused to those present and those to whom my remarks were reported.

“Not all of what I said has been accurately reported. But I accept that what I did say, and the way I said it, fell short of the requirement, which I accept, for discussions of contentious issues to be conducted in a fully civil and respectful way.”

Mr Prescott waded in on the row during GMB this morning, encouraging the party to “get up and talk and keep talking – not shouting and hurling abuse.”

The former Deputy Prime Minister said: “It polarises the debate at the moment. It’s not a party of racists.

“A lot of the accusations that are made – that millions of people believe the Labour Party are racist – that’s simply not true.

“Basically, we must sit down and not abuse each other.

“We have to continue talking to Jewish groups to find a way forward. After all the issues, the principle on antisemitism Labour was accepted in 2016.

“It’s an argument in the kind of models used to interpret that. So that’s not a great deal of difference.”

Mr Prescott concluded by saying: “The Jewish people are right to be concerned about this, but I have to say at the same time there is a lot of politicking going on – along with the press as well.

“But let’s ignore that, sit down and find agreement. It’s not that you have to absolutely accept everybody’s word.

“The party has to argue it’s case. I don’t think it’s done that too well.”

The Campaign Against Anti-Semitism (CAA) put forward a complaint to the commission regarding the Labour Party’s failure to enforce disciplinary procedures on the issue.

The organisation also accused Mr Corbyn of being an “anti-semite.”

Since then the Labour leader has apologised for speaking at an event where the actions of Israel in Gaza were compared to the Nazis.

In the apology he said he appeared with people “whose views I completely reject.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Williams on the brink of history https://briefnews.eu/williams-on-the-brink-of-history/ https://briefnews.eu/williams-on-the-brink-of-history/#respond Thu, 12 Jul 2018 19:42:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/williams-on-the-brink-of-history/ JUST 10 months after becoming a mother – and surviving life-threatening complications – Serena Williams stands on the cusp of grand slam history.

The American poleaxed German Julia Goerges 6-2 6-4 in 70 minutes to spear into her 10th Wimbledon final.

Victory there would deliver Williams a 24th major singles crown, equalling the tally of Australian Margaret Court, who claimed the last of her majors at the 1973 US Open.

Williams will face Goerges’ compatriot Angelique Kerber in Saturday’s final and, if successful, she would emulate Evonne Goolagong-Cawley’s feat to lift the world’s greatest title as a mother.

Just 13 matches into her comeback, Williams was utterly jubilant post-match.

“It’s crazy, I don’t even know how to feel, literally my fourth tournament back after 16 months out,” she said.

“This is not inevitable for me.

“I had a real tough delivery and had several operations. I almost didn’t make it.

“I couldn’t even walk to my mailbox. I never take anything for granted.

“I’m just happy to be back out here again.”

The champion here in 2002-3, 2009-10, ‘12 and 2015-16, Williams lost All England Club deciders in ‘04 (to Maria Sharapova) and ‘08 to her sister Venus.

At 36 years, 293 days, Williams would become the oldest grand slam women’s champion in the Open era (post-1968), surpassing her own record from the 2017 Australian Open.

Only Martina Navratilova (nine) and Helen Wills-Moody (eight) have been more successful than Williams at Wimbledon.

Ranked No 181, but seeded 25th because of her outstanding record here, Williams holds a 6-2 record against Kerber.

Goerges cracked first, nudging a forehand wide to trail 2-4 before Williams clinically pocketed the opening set in 34 minutes.

The second set mirrored the first, as the German fell behind in the sixth game with a forehand error.

Serving for the match 5-3, Williams was rocked by Goerges resistance, framing a backhand wide to lose serve.

The revival was abruptly snuffed by Williams, who broke back immediately to claim one of her most cherished victories.

  • Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau said the US, Canada, and Mexico were at a “final dealmaking moment” on the North American Free Trade Agreement.
  • Trudeau said President Donald Trump agreed to meet and hash out final details.
  • But on Tuesday, Trudeau said, Vice President Mike Pence called and requested the inclusion of a controversial sunset clause.
  • Trudeau called the precondition unacceptable and canceled the meeting.

A monumental trade deal may have slipped away because of a controversial US demand, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters Thursday.

Trudeau held a press conference to announce Canada’s response to President Donald Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs. He said that the US and Canada were inches away from locking down a new version of the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as NAFTA.

Rockets win thriller, Warriors on brink https://briefnews.eu/rockets-win-thriller-warriors-on-brink/ https://briefnews.eu/rockets-win-thriller-warriors-on-brink/#respond Fri, 25 May 2018 05:10:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rockets-win-thriller-warriors-on-brink/ ERIC Gordon came off the bench to score 24 points and a secure a crucial last-minute steal to secure a 98-94 victory that gave the Houston Rockets a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals.

The Rockets head into Game 6 on Saturday night in Oakland one win away from knocking off the defending NBA champions and advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time since winning back-to-back titles in 1994-95.

Chris Paul scored 20 points and James Harden struggled for his 19, but Paul had to leave the game in the final minute with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

MATCH BLOG: RE-LIVE ALL THE ACTION FROM GAME 5

Kevin Durant scored 29 points for the Warriors, who lost in Game 5 of a playoff series for just the second time since 2015.

The Rockets won a second straight defensive struggle between the two potent offenses, leaving the Warriors a loss from missing the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014.

“We had to rely on our defense once again,” Harden said.

“Game 4, we weren’t making shots but defensively we were really good. Same thing tonight.”

Draymond Green made a three-pointer with just over minute left to get Golden State within one. Harden, who was 0 for 11 on 3s, missed his last one with less than 30 seconds left, giving the Warriors the ball back.

Stephen Curry missed a floater and Trevor Ariza grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 10 seconds left. But he made just one of two free throws to give the Warriors another chance.

However, Gordon came up with his steal when Green lost control in the lane and added two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to put it away.

Klay Thompson shook off a knee injury that had his status for this game in question to score 23 points and Curry added 22.

After losing Game 1 of the series, the Rockets made the best of home-court advantage this time, thrilling a sellout crowd that included Justin Timberlake, Houston Texans star JJ Watt and rapper Travis Scott.

It’s Houston’s second straight win in the series after snapping Golden State’s NBA playoff-record, 16-game home winning streak with a 95-92 victory on Wednesday (EST).

Golden State led by one to start the fourth quarter before Paul got going, scoring seven points to power a 10-5 run that gave the Rockets an 81-77 lead with about nine and a half minutes left.

Thompson made a three-pointer after that and then officials reviewed Paul’s first basket of the quarter and ruled he got it off after the shot clock expired, leaving the Warriors ahead 80-79.

The Rockets were clinging to a one-point lead with about seven minutes left when Durant fouled Gordon on a three-point attempt, losing one of his shoes in the process. Gordon made all three free throws to start a 7-2 spurt that extended the lead to 88-82 midway through the quarter.

The Rockets honored the 10 people killed in last week’s school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, before the game, with the school’s choir singing the national anthem and team owner Tilman Fertitta wearing a “Santa Fe Strong” T-shirt, before Houston scored the game’s first six points in a first half where the team led by as many as 11.

Then LeBron James buried them.

James, who had stepped up all evening, hit an off-balance buzzer-beater from 10 feet to give the Cleveland Cavaliers a nerve-jangling 105-103 win over Toronto, pushing the Raptors to the playoff precipice.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Toronto Raptors after a thrilling 105-103 game three victory.2:02

The Raptors were awful early but then fought back. But it wasn’t enough.

“They laid their hearts out,” coach Dwane Casey said of his team, which now trails 3-0 in the Eastern Conference semifinal. “That’s all you ask — in a hostile situation, the other team playing really well, putting ourselves in a position to win.”

But in a must-win game, the Raptors never led. Their season — and perhaps Casey’s job — is on the line Monday in Game 4 at Quicken Loans Arena.

“We have one more game,” said Casey, perhaps stating the inevitable. “Our pride is on the line. Basically our season’s on the line.”

James delivers dagger

James led the Cavaliers with 38 points while Kevin Love added 21. Kyle Lowry had 27 for the Raptors with DeMar DeRozan sitting out the fourth after contributing just eight points.

Cleveland, which led by as many as 17, found itself tied 103-103 with eight seconds remaining after the Anunoby three-pointer. Then James raced down the court and delivered the dagger.

Casey had wanted the Raptors to trap James in his own end. But, taking the inbound pass from Love, he had little in his way as he headed to the Raptors end and, with Anunoby desperately trying to get in his face, put up a floater that banked in off the glass.

“He split the trap and went 100 miles an hour down the floor and lost our guy,” Casey lamented. “We just didn’t execute.”

James does that to you. At 33, he continues to dazzle with a seemingly endless arsenal.

“He’s a great player,” Casey said. “Great players make great plays.”

What was the degree of difficulty of the shot, James was asked afterwards?

“The level of difficulty of that shot, it was very difficult,” he said with a smile. “Don’t try it at home.”

‘I live for those moments’

It was the fifth buzzer-beater of James’ post-season career. He sank a three-pointer to beat the Pacers as time expired in Game 5 of Cleveland’s first-round series.

“Tie game, down by one or whatever the case may be, I live for those moments,” said James, who also practises for those moments.

In games and during practice, his teammates have seen the best of LeBron. But they are still left amazed.

“I ran out of words a while ago,” said Kyle Korver.

James scored 16 of the Cavaliers’ 26 points in the fourth quarter, refusing to let Toronto complete the comeback.

Physical affair

Toronto played a physical game, harassing and bumping James at every turn. And it showed real grit in mounting one comeback after another, only to have James and the Cavs push them back.

“Casey tried everything and put us in some dilemmas at times,” said Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue.

Still on a night when Toronto need to have all guns firing, DeRozan wasn’t a factor with a 3-of-12 shooting night. The Raptors also helped Cleveland’s cause with 17 turnovers, which yielded 18 points.

Casey said his team played with “our pants on fire defensively,” but struggled to take care of the ball on offence.

The Raptors trailed 79-65 going into the fourth but fought back to cut the lead to 97-95 with less than three minutes remaining and 102-100 with 15 seconds left.

After Jeff Green made just one free throw, Anunoby tied it up with his last-ditch shot.

The Cavaliers have won nine straight playoff games against the Raptors dating back to the 2016 conference final. They have also won 14 of their last 16 (regular season and post-season) against Toronto.

VanVleet in, Ibaka out

The Raptors went with a small lineup, giving Fred VanVleet his first career start in place of the slumping Serge Ibaka.

Toronto had a brutal opening, trailing by 12 in the first quarter before clawing its way back. But a string of errors and a poor start by DeRozan — who missed eight of nine shots with three turnovers in the first half — made the comeback heavy lifting.

“He wasn’t the reason we lost. He had a tough night,” said Casey.

After closing the gap to one point at 39-38 in the second quarter, Toronto missed five of its last six shots and went into halftime trailing by 15.

It was more of the same in the third. Toronto attempted to trim the lead only to have Cleveland beat it back to lead by 14 going into the final quarter.

Casey and team president Masai Ujiri both showed their displeasure at the officials during the game. Their ire was heightened when a potential three-point play — an Ibaka bucket and Cavs foul — was changed to no basket and a non-shooting foul after a loud protest by James.
