P Yim / Getty Bill Gates usually focuses on issues like poverty and infectious diseases through his charitable foundation, but another problem on his mind is the polarization of US politics. "I admit that political polarization may bring it all to an end, we're going to have a hung election and a civil war," he recently said in the keynote conversation at this year's Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy. "I have no expertise in that. I'm not going to divert my money to that because I wouldn't know how to spend it." Political polarization, he says, goes hand-in-hand with another issue: the spread of misinformation. "The polarization and lack of trust is a problem," he continued to Forbes. "One of the best-selling books last year was a book by Robert Kennedy, saying that I like to make money and kill millions of people with vaccines. It's wild that sells well." Over the years, Gates and ex-wife Melinda French Gates have donated billions to vaccine research, development, and delivery through their foundation. Gates has been the subject of conspiracy theories that claim he puts microchips in vaccines to track people. Earlier this month, Gates said people have yelled such accusations at him on the street. "People seek simple solutions [and] the truth is kind of boring sometimes. Anybody who's got good innovations on reducing polarization, getting the truth to be as interesting as the crazy stuff, that would be well worth investing in," Gates told Forbes. Gates' summer reading list for this year, which he announced in June, includes "Why We're Polarized" by Ezra Klein. "I'm generally optimistic about the future, but one thing that dampens my outlook a bit is the increasing polarization in America, especially when it comes to politics," Gates wrote at the time in a blog post about his book picks. Also during the Forbes keynote conversation, Gates said he and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, hope to keep their charitable foundation running for 25 more years to focus on tackling infectious diseases. https://i.insider.com/5630dcecbd86efa15c8ba395?format=jpeg
In a briefing held before today’s presentation, Ubisoft Bordeaux, the studio leading development on the project, described Basim as the most agile assassin in franchise history. He’ll have new abilities to assist him in avoiding detection, some of which you can see on display in the cinematic trailer Ubisoft shared today. An integral part of Basim’s kit is Enkidu, his pet eagle. Like Senu in Origins, Enkidu can scout ahead for you to spot potential threats, but new to Mirage is that there will be archers who can spot and take out your feathery friend. In addition to new gadgets, including smoke bombs and poison mines, Basim will also have the ability to briefly slow down time and plot out multiple assassinations.
With the action returning primarily to a single city – Baghdad circa 861 CE – parkour will play a much bigger role than in more recent games. Ubisoft Bordeaux said Basim would be one of the fastest free runners in franchise history, with a move set that includes both new and returning tricks. The story, meanwhile, will focus on The Hidden Ones, the organization that predates the Assassin Brotherhood and will see Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse, Destiny 2) play Basim’s mentor, Roshan.
When it arrives next year, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Amazon Luna and PC. In the meantime, fans can look forward to The Last Chapter. The free DLC will arrive later this year and complete the story of Valhalla.

Mysterious and damaging explosions at a Russian airbase far from the front lines in occupied Crimea last month were part of a combined attack involving a "series of successful missile strikes" meant to bring the consequences of Russia's unprovoked war in Ukraine closer to home for the Russian people, Ukrainian military officials revealed on Wednesday.
The war in Ukraine is "remote" for many "average Russians" living in Russia and Russian-controlled areas, Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; and Lt. Gen. Mykhailo Zabrodskyi, first deputy chairman of the Ukrainian parliament's National Security, Defense, and Intelligence Committee; wrote in an op-ed.
Because of the distance, "they perceive not so painfully all the losses, failures, and most importantly, costs of this war in all its senses," the two military officials wrote in a post published by Ukraine's state news agency Ukrinform.
The pair explained that there have been efforts to "physically transfer the zone of hostilities to the temporarily occupied territory" of Crimea, most notably through a series of missile strikes "on the enemy's Crimea-based air bases, first of all, the Saki airfield."

They said that should the war continue into 2023, the aim will be to "make these experiences even sharper and more tangible for the Russians and for other occupied regions, despite the massive distance to the targets."
Wednesday's op-ed appears to mark the first public acknowledgement of not only Ukraine's involvement in the attack on Saki Air Base but also the first official explanation of how Ukraine executed the attack, which the Russians characterized as an accidental ammunition dump explosion.
Russia's Saki Air Base near Novofedorivka erupted in explosions on August 9, sparking speculation of Ukrainian involvement even as Russia downplayed the incident, which was later followed by explosions elsewhere.
Ukraine didn't take credit for the blasts, which officials say knocked out 10 Russian Su-24 and Su-30M aircraft. Western intelligence said it crippled the combat capability of the naval aviation elements of the Black Sea fleet.
But a number of unnamed Ukrainian officials hinted at Ukrainian involvement in comments to the media.

A Ukrainian government official told the Washington Post that the attack on Saki was carried out by special forces, while a Ukrainian presidential advisor suggested it was hit by either ranged weaponry or local partisans, according to the Associated Press.
In a different article, a US official told the Post that it appeared Ukraine had used a long-range weapon, though not one provided by the US, and a Ukrainian official told The New York Times that the explosions at the base were caused by a "a device exclusively of Ukrainian manufacture."
In an address in August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that officials needed to keep any information they had to themselves.
Jeffrey Edmonds, a former CIA analyst and current Russia expert at the Center for Naval Analyses, previously told Insider that the nature of the damage at the base looked like a missile strike and said that if Ukraine had carried out a long-range strike deep behind the lines, it indicated that rear positions were no longer safe havens.
—Defense of Ukraine (@DefenceU) August 9, 2022
The attacks brought the war to what Russia considers to be Russian territory, making it real for people far from the front lines.
"The picture of that is the people on the beach in Crimea, the large explosion behind them," he told Insider on Wednesday, referring to the above image that the Ukrainian military highlighted afterwards, among others.
Edmonds added that this kind of capability, which may still be very limited if it's a new Ukrainian-developed capability, will likely impact Russian morale if Ukraine develops an ability to strike areas from which Russia could previously operate with impunity.
Zaluzhnyi and Zabrodskyi called particular attention to the "impunity that the lack of physical proximity ensures," arguing "this is the true Center of Gravity for the enemy" and that Ukraine has "no right to leave it without proper attention."
The Ukrainian officials stressed the need to focus on and target Russia's "source of confidence, readiness, and most importantly, the need for the Russian leadership and society to support the war on Ukraine."

Another weighed in: “Is it just me that feels particularly annoyed that @alexberesfordTV is now sitting in @piersmorgans seat? Method in the madness?? Not amused!”
“God that didn’t take long to fit Mr motivator into Piers chair, talk about rubbing salt in the wound. Come back Piers, I’m bored,” a fourth added.
While a fifth similarly called for Piers’ return: “Bring back Piers. Don’t wanna see this bloke!”
However, a sixth sought middle ground as they added to the debate: “I support Alex over the whole Piers thing with MM debate but a couple of things…
]]>The coronavirus pandemic hit especially close to home on Monday’s episode of The Good Doctor, when COVID-19 claimed the life of one of St. Bonaventure’s most cherished nurses.
Early on in “Frontline Part 2,” we found out that Morgan had contracted COVID (but had since recovered) after being exposed to a patient in last week’s season opener. Nurse Petringa (played since Season 2 by Karin Konoval) had also been exposed and later died, unable to fend off the virus despite a team of doctors (including Morgan and Lim) working on her.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Claire continued to grieve Melendez, whose spirit was by her side when she returned a precious keepsake to a deceased COVID patient’s Army buddy. Before he left Claire (for good?), Melendez acknowledged that his and Claire’s story had been cut short. He also assured her that her own amazing story was still ahead of her.
On the relationships front, Shaun and Lea were reunited after Lea arrived at Shaun’s place with three consecutive negative COVID tests; Park and Mia decided it was in their best interests not to reconcile; and Glassman and Debbie made peace after quarantine nearly drove a permanent wedge between them.
Below, executive producer David Shore explains the significance of Melendez’s return, the decision to show a frontline worker succumb to the coronavirus, and the reason he has chosen to take the show into a post-COVID world, beginning with Episode 3.
TVLINE | Is that the last we’ll see of Nicholas Gonzalez, or do you have plans to bring Melendez back later this season?
Can’t rule it out, but we have no plans. I don’t want to overpromise in that regard.
TVLINE | Having had Melendez (or at least a version of Melendez) by her side as she continued to grieve, will Claire be able to pull through in a way that she couldn’t when Breeze died?
Ironically, she is in a more mature place because she had Dr. Melendez at her side for the last few months. I think he helped her through her situation with her mother, and I think his help through [that experience] helped her when [he died]. As he says to her in [Episode 2], this time she’s dealing with it. She’s not running away [from anything].
TVLINE | Is the grieving process as much a part of Claire’s journey this season?
No, it will not be… I think one of the interesting doors that we’ve opened is the Claire and Lim friendship, and how they are going to lean on each other. Both of them have lost something, and both of them have faced great responsibility during these two episodes, so that is something I’m looking forward to embracing, and to people watching.
TVLINE | Why did you decide to kill of Nurse Petringa?
It was important to us to show lives lost [during the pandemic]. Look, doctors are heroes. Everybody who works in a hospital is a hero, for crying out loud. We owe them a debt that much more during this time because they are literally risking their lives, every single one of them. And, you know, when you’re doing a dramatic show, if somebody’s risking their life, somebody’s got to pay a price. We wanted to embrace that.
TVLINE | Just to confirm, this is the last episode that will focus on the pandemic, right?
We will allude to it on occasion, but it is a post-COVID world [moving forward]. Our decision in that regard, it was a very difficult decision. In my opinion, there is no simple answer to this one… no perfect answer to this one. If we embrace that COVID is still among us, that it’s still with us and we are still dealing with it, I think that would overshadow all the other stories we could tell. Watching our characters wearing masks as they are dealing with somebody who needs, say, something as serious as brain surgery, would be a distraction. The distancing would be a distraction.
On the other hand, we don’t want to simply say to the world, to the people who are watching, that everything’s back to normal, because it’s not. The real world is not back to normal, and we do not want to be seen as endorsing not wearing masks, or endorsing not social distancing. The compromise we’ve reached is we are going to have a statement [by Freddie Highmore] before upcoming episodes [saying] that this episode takes place in a post-COVID world — that this episode represents our hope for the future.
TVLINE | Glassman’s storyline allowed you to isolate 65-year-old Richard Schiff from the rest of the cast. Will his arc this year continue to unfold outside the hospital, to limit Schiff’s exposure to others during the ongoing, real-life pandemic?
We will see him back in the hospital as time goes on, and as we become more comfortable with our own safety precautions [on set]. We won’t lighten them, but we will feel more comfortable with certain things. Part of the decision in that first episode was, yeah, he is an older member of our cast, relatively speaking. We’ve got a basically young cast and older people are more vulnerable, and we were aware of that.
I also think his story was the most relatable story in those two episodes. The vast majority of us have gone through something very similar while we’re at home. We are trapped with somebody we care about, which is delightful and challenging, and we are going to have differences of opinions, and those differences of opinion are on issues that, you know, you didn’t talk about when your were dating or anything like that. We tried to find the humor and the poignancy both in that storyline.
TVLINE | Moving forward, what next steps will we see Shaun and Lea take in their relationship this year?
The challenge this year isn’t “Can I make her like me?” or “Does she like me?” The challenge this year is, “Can I make a relationship work?” It’s all the problems that we have in relationships, and all the mistakes that we [make] in relationships. There are unique challenges to Shaun, but he also has unique skills that allow him to deal with them differently. I always say that the show is at its best when we learn from Shaun, not the other way around.
TVLINE | You also have Shaun in a supervisory role this season. How does that change the dynamic of the show moving forward?
It’s going to be less about Lim and Andrews supervising Shaun, Morgan, Park and Claire. It’s going to be about Shaun, Morgan, Park and Claire supervising new first-year residents that are coming in under their tutelage, and if Shaun is up for that.
What did you think of Part 2 of The Good Doctor‘s Season 4 premiere? And are you happy about the decision to move beyond the pandemic in subsequent episodes? Sound off below.

The dynamic between The Rookie‘s Officer Lucy Chen and TO Tim Bradford may have warmed up some during Season 2 of ABC’s light procedural, but that “intimacy” likely won’t segue anytime soon into romance.
From go, Tim (played by Eric Winter) was a gruff, all-business TO committed to cutting his “boot” little slack, all in the name of shaping Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) to be the best officer she can be. But in Season 2, Lucy’s very close brush with death, at the hands of Rosalind Dyer’s protege, Caleb Wright, affected Tim deeply — in part because he felt responsible for nudging Lucy into what turned out to be the date from Hell. In the aftermath of that harrowing ordeal, Tim seemed different, nurturing almost, especially when at Lucy’s hospital bedside he showed up with what he knew to be her specific take-out food of choice.
The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley admits there is now a certain “intimacy” between the TO and rookie, but warns that to take things too far would make hypocrites of the series’ writing staff.
Surveying the “Chenford” dynamic, Hawley told TVLine, “The actors definitely brought it. I mean, they’re just so good individually and together.” Looking back to the drama’s launch, he said, “Tim was always designed to be a character who was much more complicated than he seemed, and Lucy was always designed to be a really strong ,empathetic character, but I think [what we’ve seen] is the magic of chemistry that happens that you just can’t know when you’re writing a pilot.”
That magic, however, won’t make a workplace romance appear. “We do walk a line — me maybe more than some of the staff — about how there’s an intimacy between them that’s born from an incredibly heightened experience over these last two seasons,” Hawley noted. “But Tim would never cross that line. She’s his rookie and he would never even consider crossing that line. So while I’m obviously aware that there’s a big ‘shipping there, and I appreciate any kind of passion about the show, that’s a huge line [to cross]” for a TO and his padawan. (Eric Winter said same during a fall 2019 TV Insider interview: “It’s something that Bradford would never organically do, being a superior to her.”)
Hawley then pointed to the Season 1 plot point that cast aspersion on the secret romance between Chen and fellow rookie John Nolan (Nathan Fillion). “We’d be hypocrites [to write a Lucy/Tim romance] because we made it very clear in those first four or five episodes that female officers unfairly get tagged if they sleep with cops, and it’s why Nolan and Lucy couldn’t be together — and ultimately I think that was the right move. I mean, he was on the rebound from a 20-year marriage and she was 20 years his junior, and so it worked out the way it was supposed to, but if we turned around and threw [Lucy and Tim] together, that would be somewhat hypocritical.”
As for what is ahead for Chen and Bradford in Season 3, which will premiere… actually, ABC hasn’t said boo about its 2020-21 scheduling… Hawley shared in our Season 2 post mortem Q&A, “Tim has made a commitment to at least try and figure out what it’s going to be like with Rachel [now living] in New York.” Lucy meanwhile “is at the beginning of this relationship [with firefighter Emmett Lang] — but she’s probably still got some stuff she’s working out, even if it’s subconsciously, about what happened to her with Caleb back only a few months prior. I just don’t want to gloss over that.”

After feeling the heat from his co-stars, 9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman has taken to social media to address his defense of using racial slurs.
In an Instagram video posted on Monday, Guzman — who plays firefighter Eddie Diaz on the Fox procedural — first said, “I do not condone the use of the N-word by any non-Black person. That includes all Latinos. That’s not our word.” (He also pointed out that stars like Cardi B and Fat Joe have used the word in the past without experiencing the same backlash.) He added that when he used the word “slurs,” “I came from an angry place. I couldn’t think straight, and I misspoke.” He was defending his fiancée Chrysti Ane and his one-year-old son, he said, who were facing death threats and “foul-ass language” from people online.
He meant to say “stereotypes” instead of “slurs,” he went on to say, reiterating that “amongst friends, can friends make fun of each other? Yes.” But he added, “I’m not here to bring anybody down,” before underlining the fact that his fiancée used the word years ago, when she was a teenager: “I think she’s grown as a woman.” He went on to say: ‘I apologize to those that I have offended and misrepresented myself by using the wrong term… I will continue to grow, and continue to help out the community.”
The controversy began when Guzman defended his fiancée in an Instagram Live on Sunday after old tweets of hers were unearthed in which she used the N-word. Guzman stated that he and his friends of other ethnicities “call each other slurs all the time. We don’t get butthurt at all because we know the actual person. We know who each other are.” Guzman’s 9-1-1 co-star Oliver Stark condemned Guzman’s words, saying “there is absolutely no excuse for the use of the N-word… I absolutely don’t agree with it being used by anyone else under any circumstances.”
Aisha Hinds, who plays firefighter Hen on 9-1-1, tweeted in response as well: “How I FEEL daily is a perpetual state of GRIEF. There’s sadly no version of this indefensible discourse that doesn’t exacerbate that grief. There’s legions of learned behaviors that need to be named and neutered so we don’t continue to give life to them. May we know & DO BETTER.”

Will Arrow fans get one last Felicity fix before the series bows out next fall? That was one of the hot topics broached during an early-morning pre-upfront press conference with CW President Mark Pedowitz, who told reporters that the door has been left slightly ajar for Emily Bett Rickards to return.
“Emily was terrific on the show and we believe [showrunner] Beth Schwartz did a great job wrapping up Felicity’s storyline [in this week’s Season 7 finale],” said Pedowitz. “If Beth can find a way to bring her back that makes sense, and Emily is available, we’d love to have her. Otherwise, I’m pleased by how they said goodbye to the character.”
Rickards announced in March, in a most unexpected Instagram post, that she would not be back for Arrow‘s eighth and final season, which will consist of 10 episodes. She made her possibly-final appearance in Tuesday’s Season 7 finale.
Rickards’ originally came on board as a guest star in Episode 3. Felicity was introduced as an IT technician at Queen Consolidated before the character became a full-fledged member of Oliver’s vigilante team. She was promoted to series regular midway through Season 1.
The CW announced Thursday that Arrow will moves to Tuesdays at 9/8c for its final season, reuniting with The Flash.

Today’s new Apex Legends update has caused issues that have led to players losing their account progress and cosmetic items.
This is affecting players on all platforms and appears directly tied to whatever changes were made to the game today.
Since the release of Apex update 1.1, Respawn has taken the game servers offline for maintenance.
This remains in place until the development team can fix today’s issues and should stop any further problems.
Respawn is warning players to not buy any new items until maintenance is complete and they have given the okay.
“Hey all, sorry about this,” a message from Respawn explains.
“We are going to start turning off servers as we do maintenance and we’ll be updating this post with info as we look into this.
“Until we have the issue resolved we recommend you do not buy or craft anything. We’re working to give you folks an ETA.”
From what has been described by fans, their Apex Legends progress, including items earned and levelling experience, have disappeared.
This has left some players to have to go through the training process again.
Fans are hoping that this is just database mismatch and that no permanent damage will be done to player accounts.
But until Respawn gives the okay and rolls back the servers, they have warned everyone not to be doing much with their Apex accounts.
“We are aware and looking into the issue with accounts losing their progress after the update today. Will provide an update ASAP.
“Until the issue has been resolved we recommend players do not buy or craft anything. We’ll continue to provide updates, along with an ETA, as information comes in.”
No ETA has been provided yet on how long today’s issues could last but it appears Respawn will be giving routine updates tonight.
One affected user writes: “Level 155, Spent $ 1000 on the game, have 58 legendary skins, 30+ skins on every single legend and weapon, level 34 BP.
“All legends unlocked, 3k crafting metals, 40k legends tokens, 200 apex coins.”
Another adds: “I’m assuming they’ll just restore my account to its former status after, so I didn’t. If you end up keeping the items after the reset I know I’ll deeply regret it, but hey.”
Rumours have proven true this week as Nintendo revealed their latest dabbling with virtual reality, this time for the Switch.
Nintendo Labo VR kits were announced today with a release date set for April 2019.
Fans will have two options when they hit shelves next month, the full set, including goggles and a full cardboard kits package, and a smaller starter pack.
The starter pack comes with goggles and the blaster/rifle labo kit, with the additional kits available to buy individually.
“With the new Nintendo Labo VR Kit, there’s more to Make, Play, and Discover together than ever before,” a message from Nintendo reads.
“Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit is a unique first VR experience kids and families can build themselves!
“The Starter Set + Blaster kit provides an action-packed introduction to the experience.
“You can then add to the fun with the Expansion Sets. Or, if you want an even broader experience right away, you can purchase the full Nintendo Labo VR Kit, which features six VR Toy-Con projects in one package.”
The Nintendo Labo VR kits will be launching on April 12 and will be limited to the software advertised.
That means fans won’t be able to play any of the other AAA titles they may want to try out in virtual reality.
And it doesn’t appear that Nintendo will be expanding into wider VR support, at least not with the current Nintendo Switch model.
However, Labo VR does provide a chance to test out the popularity of the tech with their player base before deciding on future plans.
“This new kit builds on the core tenets of Nintendo Labo – Make, Play and Discover – to introduce virtual reality in a way that’s fun and approachable for both kids and kids at heart,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
“We wanted to design an experience that encourages both virtual and real-world interactions among players through passing around Toy-Con creations.”
Available Labo sets include Toy-Con VR Google, Blaster, Camera, Elephant, Bird and Wind Pedal.
