Good Morning Britain returned to ITV this morning with the first instalment of the week and those watching at home tuned in to see Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid present. Joining them on a live video link was Robert Buckland MP to discuss the two murders which were carried out by a convicted terrorist on London Bridge on Friday afternoon. Understandably, the presenters were keen to find out what the Lord Chancellor and Secretary State for Justice’s thoughts were on the matter and it wasn’t long before Morgan grilled him about why the terrorist had been released from prison early after serving just half his prison sentence. 

Not letting Buckland speak, Morgan interrupted and remarked: “Why has it taken the murder of these two brilliant people to concentrate your minds? It’s too late for these two people!” 

He continued: “Again I ask you why has it taken, if you feel this strongly about it and it’s going to be at the heart of your government, why has it taken the Conservative’s ten years to wake up to what is the bleeding obvious? 

“Which is actually, we face a unique precedent threat from Jihadists and we know they are plotting atrocities and yet we have let loads of them back onto the streets, we’ve welcomed them back from war zones where they have been in combat against our troops. 

“We don’t know where these people are, we are not monitoring them properly and guess what? One of them goes and kills people!” Morgan stated.

Buckland kept quiet and Morgan added: “It’s not a genius working this out, this is the bleeding obvious – that was always going to happen and it’s happened on your watch and you’ve been in charge of this for the years.

“So all this ‘this is all Labour’s fault’ is a load of baloney isn’t it? You’ve had ten years to put it right!” 

Finally getting his chance to speak, Buckland explained: “This is not correct. The particular sentencing regime in this case was one passed by the Labour government. 

“We have taken action to end this tule of release – indeed before this atrocity I had already announced with the Prime Minister plans to end automatic release for halfway. We were ahead of the curve,” Buckland argued. 

Those watching at home took to Twitter to comment and one said: “@GMB Wasn’t it a Labour government that was in power when he was sentenced?

“The b*****d was sentenced under Labour legislation. Not the Conservatives fault. It’s Labour. He was convicted in February 2012 before the indeterminate sentence was abolished.” 

But someone else argued: “@GMB It’s all of them, he was sentenced under Labour legislation, sentence was reduced under the coalition – ALL parties have a hand in application of this legislation and his release – they need to stop blame game and work TOGETHER to sort out complex area to make it more effective.” 

“@GMB Blame game needs to stop – it is unhelpful and they’re all to blame, he was sentenced under Labour legislation and sentence reduced under coalition, hence Labour, Conservative and LibDem ALL to blame,” a third remarked. 

The two victims who tragically died have been named as Cambridge University graduates Jack Merritt, 25, and Saskia Jones, 23, both of whom had been at a conference at Fishmongers Hall in the capital, where they were celebrating the five-year anniversary of the Learning Together prison programme. 

The terrorist who committed the murders was later shot dead by police on London Bridge. 

An urgent review of the review of the licence conditions of convicted terrorists released from prison is going to be carried out as a result.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Higuain, who joins on loan until the end of the current campaign.

The Blues announced the arrival of the Argentina international by saying: “Gonzalo Higuain has today joined Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the season.

“The 31-year-old striker moves to Stamford Bridge from Italian side Juventus.

“He spent the first half of the campaign on loan at AC Milan where he scored eight goals.

“A proven goalscorer throughout his career, and an Argentina international, Higuain arrives with a wealth of experience at the highest level having consistently shown his attacking quality during spells in Argentina, Spain and Italy.

“Clinical in and around the penalty area, as well as providing a strong aerial threat, Higuain previously played under Maurizio Sarri at Napoli in 2015/16, when he finished as top scorer in Serie A with 36 goals, breaking a long-standing Italian record.”

Higuain will wear the No 9 shirt.

And the striker has now admitted he is eager to make a name for himself over in west London.

The Chelsea forward said: “When the opportunity to join Chelsea presented itself I had to take it.

“It’s a team I’ve always liked that has a lot of history, a wonderful stadium and they play in the Premier League, a league I’ve always wanted to play in.

“I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch.

“I can’t wait to start and I hope to adapt as soon as possible.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: “Gonzalo was our number one target in this transfer window and arrives with a proven record at the highest level.

“He has previously worked with Maurizio to great effect and is familiar with how the coach likes to play.

“This was not an easy deal for us to do because of the numerous parties involved, but we are delighted we were able to make it happen and we look forward to seeing the impact Gonzalo will make for us in the second half of the season.”

  • A whistleblower says engineers have secretly replaced bolts on New York‘s new Mario Cuomo bridge to hide the faults from inspectors, NBC4NY reported Wednesday. 
  • The state’s attorney general is investing the 60 failed bolts (out of more than a million on the entire bridge.)
  • The Mario Cuomo Bridge, which cost $ 3.98 billion, has been mired in controversy ever since it opened last year. 

A small team of engineers worked under the cover of darkness to replace failing bolts on one of New York’s newest bridges, NBC4NY reported Wednesday.

Sixty bolts out of more than a million total are known to have failed on the newly opened Mario Cuomo Bridge, located on the Hudson River about 25 miles north of New York City.

Criminal hackers continue to exploit a feature in Autodesk’s widely used AutoCAD program in an attempt to steal valuable computer-assisted designs for bridges, factory buildings, and other projects, researchers said Tuesday.

The attacks arrive in spear-phishing emails and in some cases postal packages that contain design documents and plans. Included in the same directory are camouflaged files formatted in AutoLISP, an AutoCAD-specific dialect of the LISP programming language. When targets open the design document, they may inadvertently cause the AutoLISP file to be executed. While modern versions of AutoCAD by default display a warning that a potentially unsafe script will run, the warnings can be disregarded or suppressed altogether. To make the files less conspicuous, the attackers have set their properties to be hidden in Windows and their contents to be encrypted.

The attacks aren’t new. Similar ones occurred as long ago as 2005, before AutoCAD provided the same set of robust defenses against targeted malware it does now. The attacks continued to go strong in 2009. A specific campaign recently spotted by security firm Forcepoint was active as recently as this year and has been active since at least 2014, an indication that malware targeting blueprints isn’t going away any time soon.

When London’s Millennium Bridge first opened in June 2000, the city was alarmed to discover that the motion of crowds of pedestrians crossing it gave rise to significant shaking and swaying. Londoners nicknamed it “Wobbly Bridge.” Officials shut it down after just two days, and the bridge remained closed for the next two years until appropriate modifications could be made to stop the swaying.

It’s not an entirely unknown phenomenon: there’s a sign dating back to 1873 on London’s Albert Bridge warning military troops to break their usual lock-step motion when crossing. The culprit was not Millennium Bridge’s design. Rather, it was due to a weird synchronicity between the bridge’s lateral (sideways) sway and pedestrians’ gaits.

A new paper in Biology Letters sheds further light on this by simulating the biomechanics of large crowds of people walking on a bridge. While there have been many different approaches to studying these fascinating dynamics over the years—including a lab-based treadmill recreation of people walking across Millennium Bridge by Cambridge University engineer Allan McRobie—this is a significantly improved model of how people adjust their gait when walking on a wobbly surface, according to co-author Varun Joshi of Ohio State University. It suggests that one might not even need synchronization to cause the shaking.

After nine years of construction and controversy, China is set to officially unveil the world’s longest sea bridge on Tuesday at a ceremony in Hong Kong.

At more than 34 miles long, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is part of a master plan to create a global science and technology hub by connecting two Chinese territories, Hong Kong and Macau (the world’s largest gambling center), to nine nearby cities.

With an economic output of $ 1.5 trillion, the new mega-region — known as the Greater Bay Area — is positioned to rival Silicon Valley. The plan also includes the construction of an $ 11 billion bullet train, which opened in September.

The bridge is expected to open to traffic on Wednesday, though only certain vehicles — shuttles, freight cars, and private cars with permits — are allowed to cross. Pedestrians and bicyclists are prohibited.

While some have criticized the structure as a waste of taxpayer dollars, others tout its ability to connect up to 70 million people in the region.

Commuters across the country could make hefty savings as the Severn crossing bridge toll charge gets scrapped.

The daily £5.60 charge will be scrapped from December this year, a week before Christmas.

Tolls have been in force on the Severn Bridge since it was introduced in 1966.

Regular commuters could make savings of up to £1,400 as a result of the changes.

Motorists have been required paying the £5.60 toll when travelling west into Wales, while motorists going the other way do not pay,

It can cost up to £16.70 a day to use for motorists that drive lorries.

Wales Secretary Alun Cairns announced details earlier today at the Birmingham Tory conference saying: “Wales will be more open for business than ever after the Conservatives deliver on this commitment.

“Scrapping tolls before the festive period is an early Christmas present for hard-working commuters who will be £1,400 per year better off.”

“This is just the start of my plan to pursue yet more growth for a stronger and a better-connected Wales.

“Scrapping the Severn tolls is an example of the Conservatives ensuring that all four nations of the UK thrive after Brexit, in doing so, transforming the joint economic prospects of south Wales and the west of England.”

Theresa May added: “By abolishing tolls for 25million annual journeys between two nations, the Conservatives are sending a positive, open for business message.

“Toll free, free flow journeys between both communities will drive further economic benefits to all areas surrounding the crossings and the key economic centres in Cardiff, Bath, Bristol, Newport and across to Swansea and West Wales.”
