Here come The Brides!

ABC on Wednesday announced that it has handed a pilot order to The Brides, a “sexy contemporary reimagining” of Dracula with “strong horror elements.” The potential series, from Riverdale exec producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is described as “a vampire soap about empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy,” with “a trio of powerful female leads at its heart.”

Aguirre-Sacasa is set to write the pilot, which hails from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Maggie Kiley (Riverdale, Katy Keene) is on board to direct and will also serve as an EP, alongside Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

If The Brides sounds familiar, that’s because it was previously in development at NBC back in 2015, but it did not go forward to series.

Characters in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, the Brides of Dracula are seductive vampire “sisters” who reside with the eponymous bloodsucker in Transylvania and entrance their prey with their beauty and charm, if not their overbite.

In addition to The Brides, ABC previously handed a put-pilot commitment to Rebel, a drama inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich, from Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff. Also in development is Epic, a romantic anthology series set in the Disney fairytale universe, EP’d by Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis; and a Revenge follow-up, from original series creator Mike Kelley.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Stacey Dooley’s gun trade documentary dropped by BBC amid IS brides controversy https://briefnews.eu/stacey-dooleys-gun-trade-documentary-dropped-by-bbc-amid-is-brides-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/stacey-dooleys-gun-trade-documentary-dropped-by-bbc-amid-is-brides-controversy/#respond Wed, 07 Aug 2019 10:27:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stacey-dooleys-gun-trade-documentary-dropped-by-bbc-amid-is-brides-controversy/

The BBC have decided to postpone Stacey Dooley’s latest documentary in the aftermath of two shootings in the United States.

Her latest documentary titled Face To Face With The Arms Dealers investigates the gun trade in America.

But after thirty one people were killed in two shootings that took place within 12 hours of each other in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, the BBC decided to pull it from schedules.

The decision comes after the BBC were forced to apologise when Stacey wrongly described an Islamic prayer gesture as an ISIS salute in a Panorama episode.

In a voiceover for Panorama: Stacey Meets the IS Brides, she said: “As we left the camp, we saw women raising their index finger in an IS salute.”

However the group of women who were pointing at the sky were actually performing a traditional Islamic prayer gesture.

Stacey spent time with the women whilst visiting a Syrian refugee camp for the documentary.

Face To Face With The Arms Dealers is currently not available on BBC iPlayer but the BBC’s website does give an insight into what viewers can expect from the upcoming documentary.

In the programme, Stacey meets a family of Arms Dealers who live in Arkansas in the United States.

The family sell weapons to over 100 countries and the Strictly Come Dancing champion visits them to discuss their controversial career.

The documentary maker will also get to shoot one of the world’s most powerful sniper rifles.

According to The Sun, the BBC believe it’s appropriate to postpone the documentary and a date for its released will be confirmed soon.

In other Stacey news, the dancing champion has teased her own return to the Strictly dance floor.

During an appearance on BBC Breakfast, Stacey was on the sofa when the sixth celebrity was announced for this year’s show.

Last Friday BBC Breakfast presenter Mike Bushell was revealed he would be toe-tapping his way on to the Strictly dance floor.

However just before the announcement was made, Stacey joked she was going to be the next celebrity to be revealed.

As Ben Thompson and Steph McGovern got ready to make the reveal, Stacey jumped in and made a cheeky suggestion of her own.

Referring to the picture of GlitterBalls behind them, Steph remarked: “GlitterBalls and a champion on the sofa as well.”

Stacey then joked: “I’m doing it again!”

“Could you imagine,” Steph quipped before adding: “All of the other contestants would be like, ’Nooooo.’”

Strictly Come Dancing returns next month on BBC One.

RELATED STORIES

During Designated Survivor Season 3, every time a person brings to President Kirkman’s attention a video of a citizen’s testimonial, what he watches is never an actor reading from a script but actual documentary footage.

Some of the topics covered throughout the 10-episode season (now available on Netflix) include opioid addiction and the exorbitant cost of life-sustaining medicines such as insulin.

“A mother whose child died of diabetes, people addicted to opioids, people who were in a transgender therapy group…. It’s always real,” Season 3 showrunner Neal Baer tells TVLine of the video clips. “When there are people saying to Kirkman why they don’t vote [in the previous presidential election], those are non-actors telling us why they didn’t vote.”

Describing the incorporation of documentary footage into an episodic series as something that is “very different,” Baer explains, “When I was first starting out, I did a pilot with John Wells in 1991 called Night Life, which integrated documentary footage with people who work all night. It was ultimately not picked up by NBC, but I’ve had this bug in my ear ever since.”

Episode 1 of the new season ends with Kirkman bingeing a slew of videos from generally disenfranchised Americans. From there the videos get more specific, starting in Episode 2 with an American woman who tearfully describes her sexual assault as a 13-year-old bride. Building off of a public relations snafu in which Kirkman unwittingly posed with a Saudi and his child bride (assuming the girl was a daughter), the episode proceeds to expose hard truths, including how child marriage is legal in all of the United States but two (Delaware and New Jersey).

“I haven’t met one person who knows that the child marriage rate in the United States is sort of equal to what’s going on in Saudi Arabia,” says Baer. “That was why that episode is about assumptions, like, ‘Oh, my gosh, it must be worse,’ and actually it’s not. These are all real facts and figures that are supported by the data we have.”

Baer in fact shared said data with series consultant Eric Schultz, who served as Deputy Press Secretary under President Obama, asking why the issue never grabbed a real-life White House’s attention. “Eric said, ‘It wasn’t on our radar.’ I showed him the figures, and he’s like, ‘Whoa. It wasn’t on our radar.’”

Even if it had been on the White House’s radar, implementing policy to change things, as illustrated on Designated Survivor, would prove problematic and face some surprising opposition. “As [Director of Social Innovation] Isobel says, two of the most liberal organizations, ACLU and Planned Parenthood, were against it,” Baer notes. “And that’s all true. That is all out of California.”

Cows for child brides: ‘War & climate change’ raise rates of child marriage in East Africa https://briefnews.eu/cows-for-child-brides-war-climate-change-raise-rates-of-child-marriage-in-east-africa/ https://briefnews.eu/cows-for-child-brides-war-climate-change-raise-rates-of-child-marriage-in-east-africa/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 00:45:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cows-for-child-brides-war-climate-change-raise-rates-of-child-marriage-in-east-africa/

A dramatic rise in child marriages in East Africa is due to conflict and climate change, charities working in the region say, with child brides being traded for cows and goats in order for families to survive.

The majority of parents in poverty-stricken South Sudan are looking to reduce the number of mouths they have to feed, by marrying their girls off in exchange for livestock, the charity CARE International told Reuters.

“When there is a girl within the family ready to get married, people will come and present the number of cows,” said Dorcas Acen, a gender protection expert at CARE. “Basically it’s just bidding – whoever bids with the highest number of cows will take the girl.”

Because trust in the value of South Sudanese currency has plummeted due to an ongoing civil war, a girl could be worth up to 300 cows, Acen said.

Meanwhile, severe drought has diminished livestock numbers in Kenya to such a degree that daughters are being exchanged for goats, according to Millicent Ondigo of the charity Amref Health Africa.

Ondigo aims to convince parents to keep their daughters in school rather than ‘cashing in’ on the offer of goats.

“[We told parents] when she is done with schooling, she will get a job and she will be able to buy you more than four goats,” she said.

The activist group Girls Not Brides estimates that more than 650 million women alive today were married as children. South Sudan shares the fifth place in the world rankings for child marriages, with 52 percent of girls married before the age of 18, and nine percent of girls married before the age of 15, according to UNICEF.

In Kenya, around 23 percent of girls are married before the age of 18, with rates varying across regions. The northeastern and coastal regions have the highest rates of child marriage, while central Kenya and the capital Nairobi have the lowest.

Meghan Markle wedding dress: Did Duchess of Sussex base gown on these royal brides? https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-wedding-dress-did-duchess-of-sussex-base-gown-on-these-royal-brides/ https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-wedding-dress-did-duchess-of-sussex-base-gown-on-these-royal-brides/#respond Sun, 20 May 2018 09:55:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-wedding-dress-did-duchess-of-sussex-base-gown-on-these-royal-brides/

Meghan Markle, 36, became the Duchess of Sussex when she married Prince Harry, 33, at the Royal Wedding yesterday.

The new royal stunned the world with her Givenchy-designed gown, created by British designer Clare Waight Keller.

Style-watchers were surprised by the simple, pared-back design, but it is not the first time a royal bride has worn a dress of this nature.

In fact, not one, but two royal brides have walked down the aisle in dresses very similar to Meghan’s.

Could Prince Harry’s new wife have based her design around these dresses?

Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, 40, wed Daniel, Duke of Västergötland in 2010.

For her wedding day, she wore an ivory silk off-the-shoulder gown designed by Par Engsheden.

It featured a five-metre train which came out at the waist.

She paired her dress with an extravagant long veil.

Victoria’s wedding day look is very similar to Meghan’s, who also wore an off-the-shoulder silk dress with long veil.

Another bride who looked radiant in an off-the-shoulder design was Princess Charlene of Monaco.

She walked down a red carpet at her star-studded day in a silk Armani gown.

This was embellished with delicate embroidery.

Charlene’s veil was also a show-stopper, trailing behind her on top of a long train.

Like Kate Middleton before her, Meghan didn’t stop at one dress, and changed into a second gown for the evening reception.

As the couple were seen heading towards Frogmore House for the reception, Meghan showcased her second wedding dress of the day – a gown by Stella McCartney.

The Palace announced the dress details: “The Bride’s evening dress is designed by Stella McCartney and is a bespoke lily white high neck gown made of silk crepe.

“The Bride is wearing shoes from Aquazurra made in silky satin, with nude mesh, with soles painted in baby blue.”

The Duchess of Sussex’s second dress was, like her first, a simple and elegant affair which showed off her shoulders.

While it was fitted at the top, it flared out at the bottom into a loose skirt perfect for dancing.

Meghan Markle: Prince Harry bride’s secret past finally acknowledged by the Royal Family https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-prince-harry-brides-secret-past-finally-acknowledged-by-the-royal-family/ https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-prince-harry-brides-secret-past-finally-acknowledged-by-the-royal-family/#respond Wed, 21 Mar 2018 08:43:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-prince-harry-brides-secret-past-finally-acknowledged-by-the-royal-family/

Meghan Markle, 36, will marry Prince Harry, 33, on May 19 2018 – but what was recently revealed about her secret past?

It seems Kensington Palace have finally acknowledged a key part of her previous identity outside of the royal family: her lifestyle blog, The Tig.

In a post announcing the couple’s choice of Claire Ptak as their wedding cake designer yesterday, Kensington Palace included the sentence: “Ms. Markle previously interviewed Chef Ptak for her lifestyle website The Tig.”

The LA born actress deleted all her social media ahead of her wedding to the prince, along with deleting her lifestyle website in April 2017, which she had run for three years.

This is in accordance with a royal protocol that means royals don’t usually use social media – although Princess Eugenie’s Instagram recently defied this. Meghan’s Instagram account featured her pictures of her enjoying yoga and travel around the world.

However, the gesture from the palace showed there is no desire to hide the former identity of Meghan, who also acted in US legal drama series Suits.

Meghan Markle The Tig

What was The Tig? In a post closing the website, Meghan described it as “a passion project”, and elsewhere on the site described it as “a hub for the discerning palate – those with a hunger for food, travel, fashion & beauty”.

She also spoke in the same post about what the website followers meant to her: “You’ve made my days brighter and filled this experience with so much joy.

“What began as a passion project (my little engine that could) evolved into an amazing community of inspiration, support, fun and frivolity.”

Acknowledging the website showed the palace wasn’t afraid to mention Meghan’s distinctive personality outside of her upcoming nuptials to Harry.

Meghan’s wedding cake choice – a lemon and elderflower cake – was also a crucial breakaway from the more traditional royal fruit cake.

Meghan was voted the “most relatable and in tune with the public” of the royals in a poll commissioned by Voucher Codes Pro.

The survey asked 2,311 Britons aged over 18 their thoughts on the British Royal Family. Nearly a third of those asked “Which members of the Royal Family do you feel are most relatable/in tune with the public?” chose Meghan as their answer.

Only 13 per cent felt that Kate Middleton was the most relatable member of the Royal Family. Eleven per cent of those who chose Meghan as their most relatable royal did so because “she’s a feminist.”

The majority of respondents stated it was because “she was an actress in the public eye before the engagement” (31 per cent), whilst others stated it was because “she seems so down to earth” (14 per cent).

Respondents were asked why they felt Kate Middleton wasn’t so relatable. Forty-nine per cent responded: “She’s been moulded into someone else since marrying into the family”.

Meghan Markle wedding dress: The royal brides Prince Harry’s girlfriend could replicate https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-wedding-dress-the-royal-brides-prince-harrys-girlfriend-could-replicate/ https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-wedding-dress-the-royal-brides-prince-harrys-girlfriend-could-replicate/#respond Wed, 18 Oct 2017 04:21:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-wedding-dress-the-royal-brides-prince-harrys-girlfriend-could-replicate/

Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, have been dating for over a year with bets being taken on the couple getting engaged shortly.

Meghan has a keen interest in fashion, having previously worked with a fashion label on her own line.

A wedding to royalty will guarantee images of Meghan’s wedding dress will be beamed around the world – so what kind of dress will she choose?

Kate Middleton chose a design heavily influenced by another royal bride, Grace Kelly, for her wedding to Prince William in 2011. Could Meghan go down the same route and use a royal bride as her wedding dress reference point?

Queen Elizabeth II

The head of the British Royal Family wed the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, in 1947.

She wore a dress designed by Norman Hartnell for the day, which featured a long train and heavily detailed floral lace design.

The couture house sadly closed in 1992, so Meghan will not be able to wear the same brand, but she could certainly pick out details from the gown to copy.

Princess Margaret

The Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, wed Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960. She also chose a design by Norman Hartnell, although hers was less fussy than Queen Elizabeth’s.

It was made from silk organza with 30 metres of fabric in the skirt alone. The silhouette was very modern, and is still worn by brides today.

Queen Fabiola of Belgium

Meghan may decide to choose a dress similar to one worn by a lesser known royal for her big day, and she would be wise to consider the gown chosen by Queen Fabiola of Belgium to wed King Baudouin in 1960.

The dress was designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga, who is now deceased – but his label lives on and is still famed for its gowns.

The dress, made of silk, tulle and trimmed with fur, featured a high neckline  and three-quarter length sleeves.

Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece

As a proud Californian, Meghan tends to dress in a more relaxed, casual style. meghan maThis pretty Valentino dress, worn by Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece to Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece on her wedding day in 1995, could cater to Meghan’s tastes.

The pearl-encrusted ivory silk dress had a tulip-shaped front and 4.5m Chantilly lace train. It reportedly cost $ 225,000 (£170,000) and took four months, 12 different kinds of lace and 25 people to make it.

Valentino himself has retired, but the label still dresses some of the most stylish women in the world.

Audi under fire in China for ad comparing used cars with brides https://briefnews.eu/audi-under-fire-in-china-for-ad-comparing-used-cars-with-brides/ https://briefnews.eu/audi-under-fire-in-china-for-ad-comparing-used-cars-with-brides/#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2017 12:54:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/audi-under-fire-in-china-for-ad-comparing-used-cars-with-brides/

BEIJING – Audi has come under fire from consumers in China for a TV commercial that compared buying a second-hand car to inspecting a bride-to-be.

Audi, which is attempting to revive its sales in the world’s biggest car market, said on Wednesday it deeply regretted the advert and that it had been withdrawn.

The video, which has gone viral since being aired online and in cinemas this week, showed a mother-in-law examining her son’s bride as the young couple waited at the altar to be married, an attempted play on a common stereotype of fussy Chinese parents.

Thousands of Chinese consumers went online to mock the advert, saying it was sexist and demeaning to women. On Tencent Holdings’ popular chat app WeChat, nearly half a million people mentioned “Audi second hand car” on Tuesday.

Negative social media reaction in China can have an outsized effect on brands, with hundreds of millions of people using WeChat and rival platform Weibo. Audi, owned by Volkswagen, has seen sales stall in China this year, despite a slight bounce back in June.

In the 30-second advert, a serene outdoor wedding is interrupted when the groom’s mother rushes to the podium, checking out the bride’s eyes, before pinching her nose and ears, and pulling open her mouth to check her teeth.

A voiceover says: “Important decisions must be made carefully. … Only with an official certification can you relax.” The advert is for an approved retailer of Audi used cars.

The video touched a nerve amongst Chinese consumers, with many online saying it objectified women.

“This is really low taste. Isn’t this like what people do when trading cattle?” said one under the handle Yaoxiaozi on microblog Weibo.

Audi said in a statement the perception created by the advert “does not correspond to the values of our company in any way,” adding it was launching an investigation to ensure the mistake didn’t happen again.

Premium carmakers are increasingly looking to the Chinese market for growth, as growing personal wealth and the emergence of flourishing private enterprises drive up sales.

While the tossing of the bride’s bouquet can often lead to friendly tussle, one celebration got slightly out of hand when one of the bride’s guests did something very unexpected.

The terrifying moment was captured on film, and soon after being posted online it went viral.

During the short the clip, the bride stood on one side of the room and a group of female wedding guests, young and old, stood at the opposite end.

With her back to the girls, and on the count of three, she tossed the bunch of flowers behind her and quickly turned round to see who the lucky person was to catch it.

A tall woman at the back of the group of girls managed to snatch the bouquet, but something very frightening happened at the front.

A young woman, much shorter than the rest, appeared to be holding a toddler.

But as soon as the bouquet was thrown, she dropped the small child and reached upwards to catch the flowers.

The toddler fell flat on the ground, and the young woman, quickly realising her massive mistake, bent down to pick her up off the floor.

The person who posted the video did confirm the toddler was not injured.

But people commenting on the post were still left nervous.

One said: “Yet another reason why we’re not having a bouquet toast at our wedding.”

Another wedding day was almost ruined after a page boy decided to do something very naughty at the ceremony.

In a video uploaded to image sharing site Imgur, a bride was walking down the aisle on her wedding day clinging to her dad’s arm.

She was wearing a beautiful white floaty wedding dress which featured a very long train.

Clearly excited about the big day, she smiled at all her wedding guests as she passed the pews.

But just metres away from the altar, she could never have predicted what happened next.

Germany to crack down on immigrant child brides, underage marriages https://briefnews.eu/germany-to-crack-down-on-immigrant-child-brides-underage-marriages/ https://briefnews.eu/germany-to-crack-down-on-immigrant-child-brides-underage-marriages/#respond Wed, 05 Apr 2017 13:38:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germany-to-crack-down-on-immigrant-child-brides-underage-marriages/

Germany’s government has moved to stamp out child marriages by drafting a law that will raise the age of consent to 18 and give authorities the ability to break up unions involving minors.

The law is an effort to tackle underage marriages prevalent in some immigrant communities, according to local reports, after the Federal Ministry of the Interior released statistics showing 1,475 foreign children had been documented as married last year.

Marriage law in the European nation previously stated that a union was legal if it involved a person of 18 years of age and another aged at least 16. However, the draft put forward by the German cabinet on Wednesday raises the age of consent from 16 to 18 years of age and gives authorities more powers to crack down on the practice.

A union can be annulled by a court decision if a spouse was not 18 at the time of marriage.

“Marriages in which one of the spouses had not yet reached the age of 16 at the time of the marriage should be ineffective. There is no need for a judicial annulment procedure for these marriages,” a statement on the Federal Ministry of Justice reads.

The law also gives social services the capacity to take in unaccompanied refugee minors, even if they were married abroad.

Announcing the bill, German Minister of Justice Heiko Maas said, “children do not belong to the registry office or to the wedding hall.”

“A tightening of the current legal situation is necessary in particular with regard to marriages concluded abroad,” he said.

“We are concerned about the fact that minors who are married abroad are comprehensively protected under German law – more comprehensively and faster than before. Only those of 18 years of age can be married.”

The bill is set to go before the German parliament in July.
