Guzman was made a ‘scapegoat’ by a corrupt Mexican government in an American drug war, so that the true head of the drug empire, Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, can escape justice, defense attorney for the narcotics baron claimed in his opening statement in Federal District Court in Brooklyn.
“[Zambada] has been allowed to operate for the last 55 years because he pays for it,” Jeffrey Lichtman told the court in an unexpected start of the hearing. “He bribes the current president of Mexico and for good measure, the previous one as well.”
Seventy-year-old Zambada has long been known to be one of Guzman’s closest deputies. Despite being one of the top men in the Cartel he has never been arrested for his criminal activities. “El Mayo” is still at large in Mexico. Zambada’s son, Vicente Zambada-Niebla, and his brother, Jesus Reynaldo Zambada García, however, are in US custody and may testify in the trial.
“The US government pretends to want him. But somehow they can’t figure out where he is,” Lichtman said Tuesday, noting that there is an “uglier side” to the story which the governments of Mexico and the United States don’t want the public to hear.
READ MORE: Seeking El Chapo’s billions, US officials ‘can’t find a single dollar’
In a surprising twist of events, Lichtman asked the jurors to remain open to the possibility that US government officials are not all innocent too, noting “that American law enforcement can also be crooked.”
They work together when it suits them, Mayo [Zambada] and the United States government.
The remarks came after Assistant US Attorney Adam Fels laid out the US government’s case against the drug lord. Accusing El Chapo of generating an empire that moved billions of dollars of narcotics to the US, Fels told the jury that Guzman is the sole leader of the Sinaloa cartel.
“Money, drugs, murder and a vast global narcotics trafficking organization – that is what this case is about, and that is what the evidence in this case will prove,” the prosecutor said.
While Guzman’s defense team presents the charges leveled against their client as an international conspiracy, Mexico’s current president Enrique Peña Nieto and his predecessor Felipe Calderón immediately rejected the allegations of corruption levelled against them.
Guzman currently faces 17 criminal counts related to his leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel. He may very well spend the rest of his days in a US maximum security prison if convicted. The 61-year-old drug lord, who managed to escape maximum security prisons on two occasions, is kept in under close watch in solitary confinement in New York, after being extradited to the United States from Mexico in January 2017. His trial is expected to last several months.

The retail giant has launched an internal investigation into the shady practice, with a probe ongoing since May, when Eric Broussard, Amazon’s vice president, was reportedly notified of the problem, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
The transactions were facilitated by middlemen who used the messaging service WeChat in China.
Citing people familiar with the scheme, the WSJ reported that it costs around $ 300 to delete one review. However, brokers prefer to trade wholesale, with the minimum number of reviews for removal standing at five.
Depending on the type of data and its volume, the brokers also charge between $ 80 and $ 2,000 for coveted data.
Up for grabs are internal sales statistics, including keywords, as well as an option to delete reviews or buy customers’ email addresses.
One of the incentives prompting Amazon workers to go down this slippery slope and violate strict internal regulations that ban sharing sales and customer data, is the relatively low wages they receive in China, the publication notes.
Amazon has come under fire in the past for underpaying its employees and forcing them to work in harrowing conditions not only in China, but also across Europe and in the US. An undercover journalist working at an Amazon warehouse in Staffordshire, UK reported that workers are forced to pee in bottles so as not to miss work targets. In the US, a group of employees recently complained of exhaustion, dehydration and fatigue, as they were working without air-conditioning in the company’s warehouse in Minnesota.
At the moment, several suspected bribery cases, including one in the US, are reportedly being investigated by Amazon.
A spokesperson for the company has confirmed that the probe is ongoing, noting that it has been taking steps to avert the malpractice happening in the future by installing systems that would restrict workers’ access and monitor their actions.
While the trustworthiness of online reviews is crucial for businesses like Amazon, since online buyers are not able to examine a product themselves, it has long been plagued by the problem of fake reviews.
FakeSport.com founder Saoud Khalifah has recently estimated that some 30 percent of Amazon reviews are probably fake, with the number nearing 95 percent for “Chinese no-name companies.”

ILMARS RIMSEVICS, for 17 years the governor of Latvia’s central bank, had been due to retire next year. Instead, he is facing calls to resign. On February 17th Latvia’s anti-corruption authority detained him on suspicion of demanding bribes of at least €100,000 ($ 123,000). That sparked international concern. Mr Rimsevics is a member of the governing council of the European Central Bank (ECB) and privy to the most sensitive monetary-policy decisions.
The prime minister, Maris Kucinskis, says the allegations are so serious that Mr Rimsevics must stand down. But he is staying put. Released on bail on February 19th, the central bank chief says the allegations are a set-up to punish him for cracking down on lax practices. He also says he has received death threats.

The last 12 months has seen the geopolitical landscape turned on its head with major diplomatic incidents, high-profile corruption scandals and the destruction of Islamic State’s powerbase sending shockwaves across the globe.
US President Donald Trump sent shockwaves across the world when he announced the US would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move its embassy there

The US, along with all other nations with diplomatic ties to Israel, has its embassy in Tel Aviv. Jerusalem is not recognized as Israel’s capital by the international community, insisting its status must be worked out between Israel and Palestine during peace negotiations. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as its future capital. Israel has occupied East Jerusalem since the 1967 war, annexing it from the rest of the West Bank.
Trump’s decision was seen as fulfilling a campaign promise and pleasing both Evangelical Christians and his biggest donor, Sheldon Anderson. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is a supporter of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land, and Trump has tasked him with making peace in the Middle East.
The move was met with condemnation from other leaders, pitting the US against its allies. Protests erupted across the Palestinian Territories and further afield. At leastnine Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli forces. In response to Trump’s declaration, Turkey called on other nations to recognize East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital.
The UN Security Council introduced a resolution against the move, for which all members voted, except the US, which used its veto to kill the move. US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the rest of the world should be embarrassed and that the US would be “taking names” of those nations which voted against America at a second resolution at the General Assembly on December 21. The Assembly voted 128-9 in favor of declaring any efforts to change the status of Jerusalem “null and void.”

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) has been the world’s boogeyman for the last four years, inspiring fear through terrorist attacks across Europe and a slick, gruesome propaganda machine broadcast from its bases in Iraq and Syria.
Yet 2017 saw IS lose its ‘state,’ as the group fought a doomed battle on multiple fronts against the Syrian Arab Army, Kurdish forces, Hezbollah and the Iraqi army in a bid to retain its ever-shrinking territory. The group’s stronghold in Mosul in Iraq fell in July, while Syria’s Raqqa fell in October.
The decline was spectacular, given the terrorist group’s dramatic rise that saw it control large pockets of land spanning two countries, including oilfields and refineries at its peak in 2014.
While the group has largely lost its home, the threat is not yet over. IS has vowed to continue to launch attacks from within the West. In Philippines, Egypt or other countries where there is a small IS presence, there remains the danger it will attempt to rebuild.
Although US officials have suggested the majority of the IS fighters were killed in the final battles, a number of militants have managed to escape into Turkey and other neighboring countries.
One only has to look to the Taliban, which has once again become a strong presence in Afghanistan 16 years after its overthrew by the US in 2001.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain announced a very public anti-Qatar alliance in June, accusing it of supporting terrorism and cutting of ties with the small Gulf state.
Blockades, boycotts and mass evacuations followed as Qatar became a pariah of the Gulf. Diplomats and foreign citizens were told to leave Qatar, which was even booted from the Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen. The aggrieved nations issued a list of demands to Qatar in return for ending the crisis, including shutting down the Al Jazeera media organization.
Qatar’s alleged support for Islamist groups is said to include the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. Islamic State and Al-Qaeda were also listed by Saudi Arabia as beneficiaries of Qatar’s backing, which came as some surprise, given its own well-documented support and funding of those very groups.
Six months later, Qatar is yet to bow to the demands. The boycott seemingly backfired, with Qatar actually strengthening its alliances with Turkey and Iran, creating new shipping routes with India, Oman and others, and making new trade deals with France and the UK.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has had quite the year, from the continuing siege of Yemen, to handing out robot citizenship and granting Saudi women permission to drive from June 2018.
The prince was also behind a domestic corruption crackdown in November, which saw more than 200 wealthy businessmen and members of the royal family rounded up and reportedly imprisoned inside the Ritz Carlton hotel.
The move was seen by some as a way to consolidate power and eliminate competition before bin Salman ascends the throne as king. The prince’s own wealth, including his recent purchase of a yacht worth an estimated $ 500 million and the “world’s most expensive home” in France, was not investigated in the corruption crackdown.

Bin Salman continues to exert his influence on the world stage, and is seen to be forging warmer relations with Israel and the US while continuing to increase tensions with Iran. In November, he told the New York Times that Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was “the new Hitler.”
South Korean Park President Geun-hye was impeached and jailed in March for corruption and embezzlement, which she denies. She was accused of abusing her power and colluding with longtime friend Choi Soon-sil to pressure South Korean companies to pay millions in bribes.
The controversy revealed ties between South Korean politicians and businesses, including Samsung, and sparked weeks of mass protests which resulted in parliament voting to impeach her. Park is also accused of taking $ 3.7 million in bribes from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) while in office.
A new president, Moon Jae-in was elected in May, securing 41 percent of the vote. The left-leaning former human rights lawyer promised to end corruption and foster a more diplomatic relationship with North Korea. He also said the past hardline policy employed by former leaders had failed. Moon also said in January that South Korea should learn to say “no to America.”
UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to call a snap election in April probably wasn’t her best idea. Although a new general election wasn’t due until 2020, May said the surprise election would put the UK in a better position for Brexit negotiations.
The election saw May struggle in the polls and Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn gain popularity. A hung parliament was the result, which saw the Conservatives lose their parliamentary majority.
May got into bed with the Democratic Unionist Party to secure a supply and demand support from the Northern Ireland party, agreeing to give an additional £1 billion in funding to Northern Ireland. The DUP’s new-found influence made Brexit negotiations more challenging, due to the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Lingering in the mind of every gamer is a silly, whimsical idea that very few manage to make a reality. “Gee,” we think to ourselves. “It sure would be neat if I could get someone to pay me to play video games.” Most of us know it’s a futile dream, but it’s a desire Razer is banking on. Today the company announced its “paid to play” initiative, a program that’s almost exactly what it sounds like. Yes, Razer is going to reward gamers for play their favorite games, but those players won’t be earning cash — they’ll be earning ZSilver points from the company’s new digital currency platform.
Players can earn digital currency by launching games with Razer Cortex, a desktop software suite designed to tweak system performance, manage game libraries and stream gameplay to sites like Twitch and YouTube. The paid for play campaign will reward players with three zSilver for each minute played. These zVault points aren’t legal tender, but they’re not useless either. zSilver points can be redeemed for discounts or products from the Razer store, and the company says it hopes to add things like movie tickets or coffee vouchers (presumably for a popular cafe chain) in the future. Still, earning rewards will be a long-haul effort: players are capped at 900 points a day and zSilver rewards range from 4,500 points for a product discount to 220,000 for a mechanical keyboard.
The paid to play system isn’t compatible with all games either, though it clearly has a market. Competitive multiplayer titles like Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends are among the most popular games confirmed to be part of the program. These are the kind of games dedicated fans return to day after day. That makes sense, too — to get the full 900 daily zSilver points, one would need to play at least five hours. Think of it as an excuse to learn how to play that new Overwatch character.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in New Jersey was found guilty of receiving bribes in exchange for work authorization documents. He was also found guilty of shielding his girlfriend’s immigration status and employing her in his hair salon.
Former deportation officer Arnaldo Echevarria, 39, is facing up to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of making false statements, harboring an undocumented immigrant and multiple counts of bribery on Thursday. Echevarria, of Somerset, New Jersey, allegedly earned $ 75,000 by abusing his power in the position.
Echevarria was found guilty on six charges of accepting bribes from unauthorized immigrants who received employment authorization in exchange for money or sex in one case from 2012 to 2014. The Department of Justice initially claimed that he demanded sex from two women, one of whom became pregnant from their arrangement.
He was also accused of using a hair salon he owned to employ undocumented immigrants, such as his girlfriend who he shielded from authorities by using his name to lease her an apartment and utilities.
While Echevarria had received permission to operate the salon, he paid all his employees in cash to avoid registering their immigration statuses.
He will return to court in June for sentencing, but his attorney, Michael Koribanics, says an appeal is likely, according to the Associated Press.
The 56-year-old presenter announced that Chris, a 55-year-old HR manager from Sunderland, had brought cake to the studio.
Announcing to the ITV viewers that he had eaten the sweet treat, Bradley said that it had “done a lot of favours” for the contestant.
Show host Bradley said: “I’ve actually tasted one of your cakes, and I have to say, you have done yourself a lot of favours on this show by bringing in a cake. I have to say it was exceptional, gorgeous. Anybody else wanting to come on this show, remember, especially if you are brewers.”
During the contestant’s cash builder round, Chris ran out of time, however, seemingly thanks to the cake brought in before the show, Bradley tried to squeeze in an extra question, saying: “I tried to get it in there for you!”
Entering the show to take on the contestants, 51-year-old Mark Labbett demanded cake from the contestant.
“There’s something far more important. Where is the cake? Where is it? Have you eaten it all?” asked The Beast, before offering Chris a huge amount of cash, adding: “Well, in my sugar-deprived state, £28,000 says I’m better than you.”
One viewer tweeted: “Somebody brought in a cake? OMG! #TheChase,” as another asked: “Did she bring him cake? #TheChase.”
A third posted: “I would definitely bribe with cake on #TheChase,” as another said: “#thechase #gangofchase I agree with @MarkLabbett Where is the cake! Remember if you don’t slice it and eat it all it counts as one piece.”
The official Twitter account for The Chase posted: “The hungriest man in quiz it’s #TheBeast @ITVthebeast. He’s clearly been lured here by the promise of cake. For £7000 #TheChase is on!” before adding: “Maybe he’s been slowed down by Chris’s baked goods but we’ve outrun #TheBeast. £7000 in the bank – piece of cake #TheChase.”
Later in the show, Mark asked new hopeful Benji, a 34-year-old cocktail bar owner originally from Weston-super-Mare, why he hadn’t brought Whisky with him to bribe a higher offer.
“Well Chris brought in cake, so why didn’t you bring in your tools of the trade?” Mark asked the contestant.
