  • Police say that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promoted regulations that were favorable to a media company in exchange for positive coverage.
  • Police have already recommended indicting Netanyahu on separate corruption charges.
  • Netanyahu says the accusations are made up by the media.

Israeli police are recommending Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu be indicted in a corruption case involving Israel’s telecom giant.

Police say Sunday they have established an evidentiary foundation to charge Netanyahu and his wife Sara with accepting bribes, fraud, and breach of trust.

A state prosecutor has named Netanyahu as the beneficiary of a PR scheme worth “up to a billion shekels.”

Earlier this month, police recommended Netanyahu be indicted for allegations of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. These are being addressed in two separate investigations, known as Case 1000 and Case 2000.

However, the Israeli leader now risks being dragged into another scandal-ridden investigation – Case 4000 – that revolves around his former media adviser striking a deal with communications giant Bezeq for positive coverage in return for business favors. Alongside his ongoing tenure as Prime Minister, Netanyahu also served as the country’s communications minister from 2014 to 2017. As such he directly benefited from the alleged deal, state prosecutor Yehudit Tirosh said in a hearing on Tuesday.

“I have no way of properly describing the benefit [he received]. We are talking about enlisting a leading news site to provide adulating coverage in return for regulatory benefits given by the Communications Ministry, the minister of communications and the director-general of the Communications Ministry,” Tirosh said.

Both the majority shareholder of Bezeq, Shaul Elovitch, and a disgraced former media adviser to Netanyahu, Nir Hefetz, are being held in custody. As Elovitch and Hefetz appealed their detention on Tuesday, state prosecution argued that if they are released they might conspire to derail the investigation.

Insisting that the two must be kept behind bars, the state prosecutor, as cited by the Times of Israel, said that “there is a real suspicion that if the suspects are released today, hugely important investigative work that needs to be carried out in the coming days will be thwarted.”

She was possibly referring to the upcoming questioning of Netanyahu, who is set to testify before the court on Friday. There have been concerns the alleged co-conspirators might seek to coordinate their actions with Netanyahu if their request is granted.

An alleged agreement between Bezeq and Netanyahu’s media adviser at the time focused on Israeli website Walla’s coverage of Netanyahu and his family. The website, which is owned by Bezeq, appeared to change its take on Netanyahu, portraying him in a more positive light during the time he was communications minister. For his services, Elovitch reportedly was given over 1 billion shekels ($ 286 million) in bribes and business favors, including helping him to circumvent antitrust regulations. Several other suspects, among them the telecom mogul’s family members and staff, have been placed under house arrest.

Over the weekend, the investigation itself became a source of controversy after messages leaked to the Israeli media between the presiding judge and one of the investigators, hinting at possible coordination. Although the texts, released on Sunday, referred mostly to logistics issues and not the essence of the case, the judge and the investigator were both removed from the investigation. The court on Tuesday refused to consider it as a legitimate reason for releasing Elovitch and Hefetz, with the state prosecutor arguing that the incident had not damaged the judicial process and that the detention of the suspects was in line with the proceedings.

Netanyahu spoke defiantly in the face of the accusations against him that seem to have piled up in recent months. On Monday, the PM issued a statement defending his decision as communications minister to let Bezeq buy a satellite cable provider, which some viewed as a breach of anti-trust laws. Arguing that all the decisions concerning the telecommunications giant were made by him in a “professional manner” and involved no conflict of interest, Netanyahu slammed the investigation as a “scandal” and a “witch hunt that has been going on for years.”

“Every day the numbers are rising. At first they were talking about tens of millions, then hundreds of millions. Today is one billion, and tomorrow one trillion. But the truth will win, and the hot air will blow out of this balloon – because there was nothing,” he said.

Netanyahu also denies any wrongdoing in cases 1000 and 2000. The first alleges that the Israeli leader and his wife received luxury gifts from two billionaire acquaintances in exchange for favors. The second revolves around suspicions Netanyahu had struck a quid pro quo deal with a top-selling newspaper.

Israelis, who have been rallying against “Crime Minister” Netanyahu on the streets every Saturday since December 2016, appear to believe the police over the PM, according to a recent poll by Reshet TV which found than only a quarter side with Netanyahu and almost half with the police.

  • A new report suggests that more Hall of Fame coaches and top-tier college basketball programs could be affected by the ongoing FBI probe into corruption within the sport.
  • Last year, 10 people were arrested on charges of fraud and corruption, including assistant coaches and managers.
  • The new report described the potential fallout of the investigation “substantial and relentless.”

Last year, an FBI probe into the world of NCAA basketball led to the arrests of 10 people on charges of fraud and corruption within the sport, ranging from assistant coaches to financial advisers and an Adidas executive.

While top-tier coaching names were absent from the arrests, the scandal did cost Louisville head coach Rick Pitino his job. Pitino had spent 17 seasons with the Cardinals, and was one of the winningest active coaches in college basketball at the time.

The billionaire founder and majority owner of Insys Therapeutics was arrested Thursday on racketeering and fraud charges for an alleged nationwide scheme to push an extremely potent opioid drug containing fentanyl onto patients.

According to the Department of Justice, John Kapoor, 74, of Phoenix, Arizona, used bribes, kickbacks, and other fraudulent practices to get doctors to overprescribe the fentanyl drug, called Subsys. Fentanyl is a highly addictive synthetic opioid that can be up to 100 times more potent than morphine. As such, Subsys is only intended to treat severe pain in cancer patients. But according to the DOJ, many patients receiving Subsys didn’t have cancer.

The DOJ alleges that Kapoor, along with six former executives at Insys, paid doctors and pain clinics in various states to write “large numbers of prescriptions.” The department also alleges that Insys used fraudulent means to get health insurance providers to cover the harmful prescriptions.

Rick Pitino reportedly fired after University of Louisville is linked to college basketball bribery scandal https://briefnews.eu/rick-pitino-reportedly-fired-after-university-of-louisville-is-linked-to-college-basketball-bribery-scandal/ https://briefnews.eu/rick-pitino-reportedly-fired-after-university-of-louisville-is-linked-to-college-basketball-bribery-scandal/#respond Wed, 27 Sep 2017 15:26:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rick-pitino-reportedly-fired-after-university-of-louisville-is-linked-to-college-basketball-bribery-scandal/ Rick PitinoJoe Robbins/Getty

Head men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino is out at the University of Louisville one day after the FBI arrested 10 people on charges of fraud and corruption in college basketball.

Pitino had reportedly told his staff that he expected to be fired over the allegations. The school’s athletic director, Tom Jurich, was also let go on Wednesday.

According to an undercover agent working with the investigation, an executive at Adidas and several other defendants allegedly funnelled $ 100,000 to the family of a high-school basketball player to persuade the player to sign with an unnamed public research university in Kentucky.

The complaint doesn’t name the university, but, based on details provided, it was almost certainly the University of Louisville, which signed a $ 160 million sponsorship deal with Adidas in August. The complaint notes that news the allegedly bribed student would attend Louisville seemed to come “out of nowhere” in early June; on June 3, five-star recruit Brian Bowen surprised many by announcing plans to play for the school.

At least two coaches at the university seemed aware of plans to bribe the player, according to the complaint. In fact, one of the defendants — Jonathan Brad Augustine, the program director of an Adidas-sponsored teen basketball program — allegedly said that he expected the school to fund future bribes to the student.

“No one swings a bigger d— than [Coach-2]” at Adidas, Augustine said according to an undercover agent, referring to a coach for the college’s basketball team.

Pitino said in a statement on Tuesday that he was shocked by allegations.

“If true, I agree with the U.S. Attorney’s Office that these third-party schemes, initiated by a few bad actors, operated to commit a fraud on the impacted universities and basketball programs, including the University of Louisville,” the statement read in part.

Many people began calling for Pitino’s firing or resignation as it became clear that Louisville had been implicated in the FBI investigation.

In 2016, Pitino was charged in a prostitution scandal in which Louisville staffers paid for the services of a former escort. In June, the NCAA put Louisville on four years of probation and suspended Pitino for five games for failing to properly oversee the program.

The FBI arrested 10 people on charges of charges of fraud and corruption in college basketball on Tuesday.

The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that four college basketball coaches at Auburn and Oklahoma State University and had been arrested, as well as managers, financial advisors, and representatives of a major international sportswear company.

The Wall Street Journal reported this morning that the arrests were part of a “wide-ranging” investigation focused on financial advisors, agents, and apparel companies paid coaches, in exchange for pressuring players to associate with certain entities.

The multi-million dollar battle for top-tier college basketball teams is hard fought amongst sportswear giants. The visibility of being worn by a certain team or high-profile player is a valuable marketing opportunity for apparel companies, despite the fact that NCAA players cannot be paid to endorse brands.

In the 2016 NCAA men’s basketball tournament, Nike was the clear leader, providing uniforms for 41 entrants, the Baltimore Sun reported. Addidas provided outfits for 14 teams, Under Armour outfitted 10 teams, and Russell Athletic outfitted three.

Under Armour has made major investments in college basketball in recent years. In 2016, the company made a $ 280 million agreement to replace Adidas as the UCLA men’s basketball team’s shoe and apparel sponsor for the next 15 years. Under Armour has also cut deals in recent deals with teams including Notre Dame, Auburn, and Wisconsin.

Uber may face federal investigation over foreign bribery https://briefnews.eu/uber-may-face-federal-investigation-over-foreign-bribery/ https://briefnews.eu/uber-may-face-federal-investigation-over-foreign-bribery/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2017 01:41:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uber-may-face-federal-investigation-over-foreign-bribery/

Uber’s new CEO might have a lot of trouble on his plate. The Wall Street Journal has learned that the US Department of Justice is taking preliminary steps to determine whether or not Uber managers broke American laws barring foreign bribery. Reportedly, there are claims the ridesharing firm paid foreign officials to either get or maintain business. These are just tentative steps and may not lead to anything, but there could be a full-on investigation if the DOJ finds enough evidence.

The WSJ‘s sources haven’t said whether this is focused on bribery in one country, or is part of a broader look into Uber’s foreign operations.

The DOJ has declined to say whether or not there’s an investigation underway “as a matter of policy.” However, Uber says it’s cooperating with the preliminary investigation. Clearly, the cat’s out of the bag.

If this leads to a full investigation, it could be one of the biggest problems yet for a company that’s no stranger to crises. Uber has faced plenty of past accusations of lawbreaking, but this would be particularly grave — the DOJ would be accusing Uber of nothing less than systematic corruption. Even if Uber has already cleaned up its act by booting key executives, it would still have to deal with the legal fallout and prove that any questionable dealings are a thing of the past.

(Reuters) — The billionaire head of South Korea’s Samsung Group, Jay Y. Lee, was jailed for five years for bribery on Friday after a six-month trial over a scandal that brought down the president.

Lee had paid bribes in anticipation of favors from then president Park Geun-hye, according to a landmark ruling by a Seoul court, which also found him guilty of hiding assets abroad, embezzlement and perjury.

Lee, the 49-year-old heir to one of the world’s biggest corporate empires, has been held since February on charges that he bribed Park to help secure control of a conglomerate that owns Samsung Electronics, the world’s leading smartphone and chip maker, and has interests ranging from drugs and home appliances to insurance and hotels.

Lee denied wrongdoing.

One of his lawyers, Song Wu-cheol, said Lee would appeal the lower court ruling.

“The entire verdict is unacceptable,” Song said, adding that he was confident his client’s innocence would be affirmed by a higher court.

Under South Korean law, sentences of more than three years can not be suspended. The five year-sentence is one of the longest prison terms given to a South Korean business leader.

SEOUL (Reuters) – The billionaire head of South Korea’s Samsung Group, Jay Y.

Under South Korean law, sentences of more than three years can not be suspended. The five year-sentence is one of the longest prison terms given to a South Korean business leader.

The Seoul Central District Court said Samsung’s financial support of entities backed by Park’s close friend, Choi Soon-sil, constituted bribery, including 7.2 billion won ($ 6.4 million) in sponsoring the equestrian career of Choi’s daughter.

In return for the contributions, prosecutors say, Samsung sought government support for a controversial 2015 merger of two of its affiliates, which helped Lee tighten his control of the conglomerate.

His lawyers had argued that the merger was done on business merits but the court did not accept that.

‘Violation of rights’

Park, who was forced from office in disgrace, is facing her own corruption trial, with a ruling expected later this year.

Prosecutors have argued that Park and Lee two took part in the same act of bribery so Lee’s conviction would appear ominous for Park.

Hundreds of rowdy, diehard Park supporters rallied outside the court earlier in the day to demand Lee’s acquittal.

“The trials of former President Park Geun-hye and Samsung Jay Y. Lee go hand in hand,” said Son Tong-sok, 63, who heads a conservative group, holding a Korean flag.

Son said prosecutors had built their cases on circumstantial evidence and unsubstantiated claims reported in the media.

“Arresting these two innocent people are violations of human rights,” he said.

Samsung, founded in 1938 by Lee’s grandfather, is a household name in South Korea and a symbol of the country’s dramatic rise from poverty following the 1950-53 Korean War.

But over the years, it has also come to epitomize the cosy ties between politicians and powerful family-controlled business groups – or chaebols – which have been implicated in a series of corruption scandals.

South Koreans, who once applauded the chaebols for catapulting the country into a global economic power, now criticize them for holding back the economy and squeezing smaller businesses.

South Korea’s new president, Moon Jae-in, who replaced the Park after a May 9 election, has pledged to rein in the chaebols, empower minority shareholders and end the practice of pardoning corporate tycoons convicted of white-collar crime.($ 1 = 1,127.5300 won)
