Millions of mattresses are swarming with mould, bacteria and dust, it was revealed last month.

Foam mattresses can provide the best breeding ground for bacteria, and could lead to infections, and trigger allergies and asthma attacks.

But, a new mattress made from plastic noodles could help to reduce the risk, and has been hailed as “life-saving” by an expert.

It’s believed to be the first mattress that can be easily washed in the shower, which could kill most harmful bacteria, according to the manufacturer, Squirrel Medical.

Squirrel Medical’s Technical Director said: “I think that this is the first time in 70,000 years that mankind can simply wash a mattress down. It’s a simple concept and should be of tremendous benefit for those with dust mite allergies and respiratory illnesses.

“This is more than adequate for killing most pathogens, dust mites and removing dust.”

Foam mattresses can absorb up to 46 per cent more moisture than any other type of mattress, according to bed maker Harrison Spinks.

The moisture makes them a perfect place for bacteria to grow and breed.

Bacteria that reside in mattresses include Staphylococci, Enterococci, and even the deadly MRSA superbug.

Infections form these bacteria can lead to painful lumps on the skin, cellulitis, collections of pus under the skin, pneumonia and urinary tract infections.

The new mattress – appropriately named Noodles – could be used in hospitals and care homes to lower the risk of spreading infections.

It could also be used domestically to improve hygiene, and to reduce dust and dust mites.

“This mattress is very clever,” said health policy analyst, Roy Lilley.

“It looks a bit like dried Japanese rice noodles, and is a really neat, innovative piece of technology.

“There’s a big demand – in hospitals especially – for a mattress that’s easily cleaned, and less likely to harbour infections.

“It’s not a stretch to say it could save lives.”

The mattress was launched in the UK on November 18.

About 300,000 people in England acquire healthcare-associated infections each year.

That includes around 9,000 deaths every year from both MRSA, and the deadly superbug Clostridium difficile (C. diff).

The NHS spends about £1billion a year on treating these infections, according to Squirrel Medical.

A 10-year old mattress could hold more than 10lb in dead skin, it was estimated.

Harrison Spinks head of research Melissa Cockerill said: “While foam mattresses may be comfortable, they don’t offer the best sleeping environment when it comes to moisture evaporation and breathability.

“Foam is good for absorbing the moisture lost while we sleep, but isn’t as effective at evaporating this moisture, meaning it is often stored at the mattress’s core – the ideal breeding ground for bacteria.”

The average person sweats almost enough to fill a 330ml can of fizzy drink every night.

Air doesn’t flow through foam mattresses as effectively as other types, so not as much moisture is evaporated.

The best type of mattress to avoid unwanted, hidden bacteria was those using natural fillings, Harrison Spinks said.

Wool or cotton mattresses were fresher and dryer, because air flow was more efficient in the mattress.

About 23% more moisture was evaporated in wool mattresses than foam ones, the bed maker added.

So, less dust mites and bacteria would reside within natural mattresses.

“Those looking to keep their mattress fresh should look for a mattress boasting a host of natural fillings,” said Cockerill.

“There’s a misconception that the fibrous nature of natural mattress fillings mean they’ll house more bacteria, but this isn’t the case.

“Fillings such as the home-grown wool, cotton and flax we use offer much better absorption and wicking properties.”

It was estimated that a 10-year old mattress could hold more than 10lb in dead skin.

One of the many tragedies of war are the dangers that persist long after conflicts formally end — dangers like abandoned minefields peppered with active, deadly ordnance. Buried landmines threaten the lives of ordinary people near former battlefields all over the world, and disarming them has always been a dangerous effort. Now, researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem are working on a way to make landmine identification easier and safer. No, the trick isn’t to build a better metal detector, it’s to cultivate bacteria that glows in the presence of deadly explosives.

A paper by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem describes a system that uses specifically engineered bacteria that respond with a fluorescent signal when it detects the kind of explosive vapors that seep out of old landmines. This signal can be picked up by a laser scanning system that can identify the location of buried mines. Because the laser scanning portion can be operated remotely, the system could potentially remove the human element from a large part of the detection process.

If this method of detection can be proven to work consistently and be successfully deployed, it could help create a safer and more accurate method for clearing old minefields. The project also just sounds kind of cool — what’s better than using genetically engineered microorganisms and lasers to save lives?

With over half the month of January behind, Pokemon GO rumors have shifted from the legendary first generation Pokemon still missing to the next big holiday, Valentine’s Day. Niantic Labs first introduced events back in October prior to Halloween. The success gave the app the boost it needed to see revenue push to around $ 950 million according to a Venturebeat report from App Annie.

What possibly could be in store for Pokemon GO when it comes to Valentine’s Day? The data miners over at The Silph Road uncovered gender specific Pokemon in the December. In particular, players are rumored to be seeing differences in Pikachus they have caught. The site iTech states they have had multiple sources say female Pikachu have been seen with the end of the tail shaped like a heart. The male version is said to be the thunder shape.

What could this mean for the Valentine’s Day event? Breeding has been a part of Pokemon since very early on. It is thought that with the Valentine’s Day event breeding might be introduced. Considering that trading has long been rumored to be on its way, this comes as somewhat of a surprise. Nothing has been substantiated by Niantic or The Pokemon Company, but to this point, the data miners have rarely been wrong.

Pokemon GO rumors continue to persist about when and where the likes of Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mew, and Mewtwo will be made available. The January update did not give any hints, but it was the first time that new moves have been added according to another Silph Road report. Some of the moves include Bullet Speed and Heavy Slam.

As 2017 begins, it will be difficult for The Pokemon Company to match the success of 2016. The 20th Anniversary of Pokemon cannot help but be considered one of the most successful celebrations in the history of toys and gaming.

Pokemon GO won numerous app of the year awards. As mentioned before, it earned $ 950 million helping The Pokemon Company, Niantic, and specifically Nintendo to better profits than originally anticipated. It did all of this despite only being available six months of the year.

Pokemon GO wasn’t the only Pokemon game in 2016. The rerelease of the original Pokemon games for the Nintendo Gameboy saw huge success on the Nintendo 3DS. Both Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Red still rank in the top five of software sold on Nintendo’s eShop charts according to Nintendo Everything. Pokemon Blue is at number nine. It should be noted that these three versions of the game released in early 2016.

Not to be outdone on Nintendo’s handheld, Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon both released on the 3DS in November. As of this week, the two complementary titles have sold more than 4.5 million units. This makes it the fastest selling game in Nintendo’s storied history including the company mascot Mario according to Forbes.

To illustrate just how popular Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon have been, Nintendo sold 7.4 million units of first party software in 2016. Over half were these games. They were only out one and a half months.

Other anniversary events of 2016 included special expansions of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. There were 15 special sets in all. Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, and Pikachu EX boxes were available along with 11 Mythical Pokemon sets.

With all this said, Pokemon GO has been attributed to the main contributor to the success in 2016. If it is up to Niantic the game will continue to evolve with updates. They have stated they have planned for this game to extend ten years. With six more generations of Pokemon still available to catch, there is no reason to see why this isn’t possible.
