In a country best known for sausage and beer, Berlin is at the forefront of a German culinary renaissance.

Wander through its city-centre neighbourhoods and you’ll be struck by the artisan bread and cake shops, craft beer and vegetarian eateries alongside those peddling the ubiquitous German currywurst.

This sausage smothered in curry-flavoured ketchup is eaten by an estimated 70 million Berliners annually.

On a long weekend last month we were introduced to this inventive side of Berlin’s cuisine on a food tour of the Mitte (city centre) devised by Bastian Schwithal, an enthusiastic proponent of Berlin’s gastronomy.

The four-hour tour flew by as Bastian regaled us with tales of Berlin food, lifestyle and history during pitstops at various establishments: we sampled goodies such as homemade meatballs at the fine-food emporium Lindner and gorgeous “fridge cakes” at Eisenbergs café to freshly roasted coffee at the Röststätte and craft beer at award-winning microbrewery Brauhaus Lemke.

Perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised about this innovative cuisine and the arty alleyways Bastian showed us during the tour, given Berlin’s pre-war status as one of Europe’s most bohemian and liberal enclaves.

That feeling still pervades the German capital: its vibe is youthful, arty and bustling.

We checked into Vienna House Andel’s Berlin, a sleek and modern hotel that offers a warm welcome, stylish rooms and even a Michelin-starred restaurant, Skykitchen.

It was the perfect base from which to explore the city, located right next to a tram stop and train station.

We enjoyed bespoke cocktails in Vienna House’s trendy Skybar, which offers beautiful sunset views over the city, and enjoyed dinner in Mavericks, its buzzing ground floor restaurant offering California-style surf-and-turf cuisine.

The hotel’s newly refurbished SpaSphere, with hot tub and outdoor terrace, was the perfect spot to ease our aching muscles after a hard day’s sightseeing.

With our Berlin Welcome Card we enjoyed free public transport and various museum discounts and offers.

Berlin’s tumultuous past makes it one of Europe’s most interesting cities with a vibrant, modern feel

A highlight of our trip was a visit to the Reichstag, the central government building. Stunningly baroque on the outside, inside it’s entirely modern, and guests are allowed to view its modern steel-and-glass dome designed by Norman Foster.

It’s a short walk to the Brandenburg Gate, the 18th-century neoclassical monument that came to symbolise a divided Germany when it was closed off by the Berlin Wall in 1961.

It stands at the entrance to the Tiergarten.

Berlin also surprised us in the way it owns up to the darkest chapter of its history as the birthplace of Nazism; that period is commemorated in numerous free memorials and museums.

The most moving site is The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial, within walking distance of the Brandenburg Gate.

Many remnants also remain of Berlin’s most recent period of tumult, the Cold War, when the Berlin Wall divided the city from 1961-1990.

Among the best to visit is the East Side Gallery, a 1,300-metre stretch of wall boasting 105 murals painted by professional artists after the wall fell.

Afterwards, go for a stroll and check out the imposing red brick Oberbaum Bridge that served as a checkpoint between West and East Germany.

God of War preview – Kratos set for bold, brutal and breathtaking return on PS4 https://briefnews.eu/god-of-war-preview-kratos-set-for-bold-brutal-and-breathtaking-return-on-ps4/ https://briefnews.eu/god-of-war-preview-kratos-set-for-bold-brutal-and-breathtaking-return-on-ps4/#respond Mon, 19 Mar 2018 20:18:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/god-of-war-preview-kratos-set-for-bold-brutal-and-breathtaking-return-on-ps4/

God of WarSONY

God of War preview – Kratos makes his PlayStation return in breathtaking fashion

Straight out the bat, Santa Monica’s latest game starts on a sombre note that sets the tone perfectly for a gruelling opening salvo.

Whereas the previous games had a hyper-stylised, comic book feel – the God of War reboot opts for a gritty, dirty and visceral style.

The change in pace also comes with a major shift for Kratos – who has turned from a rage-filled beast into a more multi-faceted, vulnerable character.

That vulnerability lies in the relationship with his son Atreus, whose only protector is the God of War.

Trying to do a 180 on such an established character comes with its pitfalls.

Change too much and the character becomes alien and foreign. Change too little and you might as well have not bothered.

But the God of War reboot manages to strike a fine balance between shaking up how we see Kratos, while keeping the character’s essence the same.

His softer side is seen in moments in-between battles with Atreus, where he is torn between caring for his son and trying to instill a toughness in him.

This emotional link gives you all the more reason to take care of Atreus when he is by your side in a fight against God of War’s many fearsome foes.

Unlike other games where you have computer controlled companions, Atreus doesn’t feel like a burden.

In fact, he proves to be a big asset – with players able to dish out orders to Kratos’s son during fights.

One early boss battle we faced during a preview we luckily got to play showed how crucial Atreus can be to success.

Ordering him to carry out a few crossbow attacks helped distract an enemy for just enough time to give Kratos an opening to deliver a flurry of blows.

Elsewhere, when we were getting swamped by enemies from all sides Atreus’s crossbow helped stifle the onslaught so we could get on top of the battle.

Kratos himself controls the way you’d expect an ageing warrior to.

He may be a step slower than in previous games, but what he lacks in lightness on his feet he more than makes up for in pure brutality.

Kratos has an array of attacks at his disposal, including using his new Leviathan axe to down opponents or, alternatively, his bare fists.

The latter helps build up an enemy’s stagger meter, and once filled a devastating quick time event attack can be triggered.

This comes complete with a stylish, and bloody, cinematic as Kratos brutalises his enemy and takes off a significant chunk of health.

The first few hours of God of War is filled with bloody moments like this thanks, in part, to its fast, fluid and brilliant combat system.

But, in contrast to the lashings of gore on offer, it’s also a truly gorgeous game to behold.

Returning director Cory Barlog has helped eek out plenty of performance from the PS4 and PS4 Pro, and the results are jaw-dropping.

God of WarSONY

God of War preview – Santa Monica’s latest game looks absolutely stunning

The game’s graphical prowess gets plenty of moments to shine early on, with Kratos and Atreus travelling to an array of varied locations at the start.

From dusty catacombs, to snowy peaks, to lush forest areas – God of War’s beginning keeps changing up the battlefield to stunning effect.

Elsewhere in our playthrough of God of War’s first few hours, Express.co.uk got to grips with the game’s RPG elements.

Like a lot of modern, open-world action adventure games, God of War introduces skill trees and unlockable skills.

God of WarSONY

God of War preview – Combat is fast, fluid and brutal

You can tailor Kratos’s fighting style, armour and Atreus’s gear to suit your own personal play style.

While God of War also offers players the chance to delve deeper into the game’s lore, with diary entries on enemies types available to unlock in the menu.

The first few hours of God of War gave us plenty to get excited about, but we only scratched the surface.

Sony said there’s up to 35 hours of content, as well as plenty of additional things to discover off the beaten track of the game.

It’s all shaping up to be another must-have PS4 game, and a classic entry in the God of War series.

Kratos is older, wiser – and looks to be better than ever.

The ITV presenter, 36, could barely contain her excitement at the beginning of the show when she and her co-host Phillip Schofield, 55, revealed that they would be dressing up later in the programme.

The duo left This Morning in the hands of Rylan Clark-Neal, 29, and Alison Hammond, 42, while they went to get ready for the big reveal.

Not to be left out, Rylan looked spectacular in a Maleficent costume complete with horns, whilst Alison took on the role of Ursula from The Little Mermaid.

Holly Willoughby finally put an end to the suspense when she paraded into the studio dressed as a magical unicorn.

“This is the best day of my life,” she giggled as she showed off her ensemble.

With a flowing rainbow mane and tail, a skintight white top and draping furry fabric to create the hindquarters of the mythical creature, Holly added a touch of sex appeal with a white corset which cinched in her slender waist.

This Morning viewers flooded to Twitter to gush over her outfit, with one praising: “@hollywills looks absolutely beautiful as ever as a unicorn.”

“Holly looks fab,” another exclaimed, while a third chipped in: “So jealous of @hollywills unicorn outfit, I wanna be a rainbow unicorn.”

Where is Taboo filmed? Breathtaking locations for Tom Hardy drama revealed https://briefnews.eu/where-is-taboo-filmed-breathtaking-locations-for-tom-hardy-drama-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/where-is-taboo-filmed-breathtaking-locations-for-tom-hardy-drama-revealed/#respond Sat, 07 Oct 2017 09:35:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/where-is-taboo-filmed-breathtaking-locations-for-tom-hardy-drama-revealed/

Where is Taboo set?

Taboo is largely set in London in 1814 after James Delaney (played by Tom Hardy) returns to England following 12 years in Africa.

While the eight-part series follows James’ return, it also features flashbacks to his time with the East India Company.

Where was Taboo filmed?

The majority of Taboo was filmed in London but other locations throughout England were also used.

The opening scene of the series, which saw James dramatically return to London for his father’s funeral, was set at the 17th-century St Mary’s the Virgin church in Wanstead.

Meanwhile, the interior scenes for the East India Company’s headquarters and Sir Stuart Strange’s (Jonathan Pryce) office were filmed in the Marble Hall in Hertfordshire’s Hatfield House.

However, the exterior the headquarters was provided for by Goldsmith’s Hall in the City of London, which was built in 1835.

Various other locations within the capital included Middle Temple Lane in Temple, which saw James stroll through on a horse.

Henry Wood Hall in Trinity Church Square in Southwark was used as the setting for the theatre where Lorna Bow (Jessie Buckley) performs.

Several of the series’ scenes at the Delaney dockside offices were filmed at Wapping docks, however, the cast worked on The Golden Hinde at Southwark when James prepared to set sail for America.

Another stunning location used for the BBC drama includes Danson House, which was built in Bexleyheath in 1766.

The stately home was used as the home of James’s sister Zilpha Geary (Oona Chaplin) and her husband Thorne Geary (Jefferson Hall).

When does Taboo season 2 start?

While writer Steven previously noted that he is writing the second run of Taboo, filming is not slated to start until 2018.

Speaking to Den of Geek, he explained: “I’m trying to write it as quickly as I can.

“I would say we would hope to be shooting it — I don’t know whether this is supposed to be secret or not — early next year.”

Tom Hardy confirmed that he would reprise his role as James Delaney, commenting: “We are grateful and excited to continue our relationship with the BBC and FX in contributing towards British drama.”
